For example… ‘In late 1953 Wally went to England where he set a new record for the London to Brighton (approx 90km) race, and then took a World Record breaking 12 hours 26 minutes for the 100 miles from The Bear pub on Bath Rd into Hyde Park Corner in London. Yet again under the guidance of the great Arthur Newton, Wally lined up at Motspur Park just a few weeks later, for a 24 hours race where, against the top British ultra runners, Wally set a new 24 hour world record, at the age of 45. Although this open record stood for years, the standard of his run can best be adjudged by the age group record that lasted over 5 decades, eventually being beaten by a small margin by Scot Don Ritchie. Wally was awarded the Helm's Foundation Award for the Outstanding Sportsman of the Year for the African Continent.’
On the way back I stopped by the Moma museum as I am rarely in that part of town and the Edvard Munch exhibit is going on -- I saw a couple of exhibitions of his works in Stockholm and Oslo about a decade ago but nothing as vast as what this show has to offer. The only bad part is that it was Free Friday so the place was packed -- I would have paid twenty notes to get rid of the masses of people who seemed to be in the museum for no other reason than to stand with their backs to the paintings and look at the people walking around.. Lots of snipey Scandinavians there who did not enjoy this group of ‘tourists‘. Then I was off uptown to check out the invitations for the Shoe4Africa do next month
In 1989 I was hitching and standing outside the Royal Marines School of Music in Deal, England. A bomb exploded killing ten and wounding many others. Not to forget the fact I was downtown on September 11th in NYC 2001. The question is who is going to get blown up first in my family?
Speaking Egypt it seems quite the vogue right now -- a friend of mine, Maura, has just bought property there, and my old training partner from Stockholm and a 8:45 steeplechaser, Jonny Petren, has just started an Egyptian dance/belly dancing class. A bewilderment what your old friends get up to huh?
I also ran into OzPaul who has a new job -- he has to commute out to Stamford CT each day… but he hopes it is just temporary, it is with a financial company UBS or something, and as we were talking (standing on Madison Avenue) a British man came up who used to work in Tanzania for thirty years for the High Commission and started chatting - what a friendly place this city is, but on that note OzPaul is missing Ozland and wants to move back home. Mad, not me!
John Korir, road racer supreme, ran a great 22-miles at Boston.Does anyone know where I can buy the fruit canistel in NYC?? I should ask Herb=the-Verb, as it is available in Puerto Rico.

Mr. Morgan was a huge collector, and he saved lots of manuscripts… on show are the original writings scripts and books of Mozart, Beethoven, Oscar Wilde..
Amazing to look at cross outs of the musical notes on the drafts! Then there are amazing books from the tenth century (one Persian book commissioned by Genhaz Khan) gilted gold pages galore.. Also a French Manuscript written entirely in Gold from 860 AD…, tarot cards from 1450, Egyptian seals from 350 BC, many many hand written letters from people like Gay, Burns, etc etc.. I went with Glenn & Cynthia Gale who own the gallery just around the corner, and after (via starbucks on 36th ST) we went to that place -- pretty spiffy too with a huge Indonesian touch to the furnishings and silverwares (The gallery used to be a brothel but that is another story complete with leftover baby wipes), and their friend Beth Schon. who is the founder of Ladies who Launch (dot com)…
I was late to the show, as I thought one was supposed to be for these occasions, but apparently not.. Oops. I picked up some great art stealing tips, and dealer insider forgery stories…
As usual I forgot about the dress codes of such events, in a field of black cuts, dab ties, and shiney shoes, my turquoise, red and white shirt went well with Fluoro pumps… Someone told me I looked like a Beacon….
Kathy MasterBlaster was telling the news of the superstar runner Gillian Horowitz (Step mum to the Beastie Boy of the Adam name). Nancy was outdoing her self running like a torpedo. Robin from England (#3 was leading the other pack), David Trackman still has the sore ham. Paul getting in some consistency, and Robin from the Harriers pushing really well. Sir Alec sliding up the ladder with great numbers. Atilla with a watch that makes more sounds than a funfair in Las Vegas. Christine J pushing well and moving through.. And ChuckyChina, “Cramps in the first Mile” Boston recovery man giving tips on shopping NYC and living in the burbs of Boston, “Had to move back to NYC!” And Rick passed out at work, didn‘t even make it down -- his virus that caused him to run poorly at Boston has taken a turn for the worse; don‘t run if you have a 80+ resting pulse and a week of the chills, then end up passing out after the Doctor diagnoses you as half dead…. The mind boggles!
Funnily enough Joy was also in Puerto Rico at the same time.. Small world! Even stranger still, she was near El Yunque (the rain forest of the Caribbean) and we also went there.
1. Deena Kastor (United States) 2 hours 19 minutes 36 seconds 2. Lyudmila Petrova (Russia) 2:21:29 (shocking return to great form) 3. Susan Chepkemei (Kenya) 2:21:46 4. Berhane Adere (Ethiopia) 2:21:52 5. Galina Bogomolova (Russia) 2:21:58
Slipping out, off to La Culebra Island --just a few miles into the Ocean from the most eastern tip of Puerto Rico-- and it reads; “Simple. Unspoiled. Romantic. Eternal. It is a place specially designed for those looking to pull the plug from the ordinary. For those who want to hit the "restart" key of their soul.” Start me up, it has been a while since I have had a pure lazy holiday… and the web site will be updated a week from now, as the restarted plug lands back in the reality. Midnight strolls on the beach here we come, I wonder if I should take my San Juan police cap…Talking Marathons Rick barely beat Fred to the line at Boston. Fred, at the Four Seasons, was professing to not having ran a step in training… but we heard that one before -- funny Audrey (Fred’s wife/girlfriend) was saying she was now running….”not as much as Fred…” Hmm, the mind boggles.. Paola ran a great race, 3;28 a huge PR…. Tracy K from UATH too -- well done! Kurt says things did not go well for him -- hm, perhaps he better get back to training with us again, since actually qualifying for Boston we have not seen him(!)

“I gave it all, I would not change a thing (with my tactics).” Well third was not too bad eh?
And talking Boston - The Chicago Tribune has an unfair article Not praising the tremendous efforts made by the US runners - based on comparing times from times gone by, and actually totally ignoring the fact that the trio of US men beat what was an outstanding league of Kenyan athletes ‘on the day’ which is what racing is about, not saying “30-years ago, one second, progress” it is looking at the fact three US men beat the likes of Tola, Kiplagat, and Onsare all of whom have ran 2:06, that they beat Cherigat a former winner.. Cheez.. Well he is probably trying to ruffle some feathers because the actual content or interest level of the actual writing is similar to a DNS marathon.
“As for my race - well, I felt good and suitably psyched up. Ran strong for the first half posting 1:25 - well on target to break 3 hours. Kept up the pace until mile 19 and then the hills hit me. I was ready for Heartbreak Hill but not Heartbreak Hills. Wave after wave of hills - just as I thought it was over and the terrain levelled off another f****** hill appeared! Arrghhh! Sapped my energy so although my mind remained resolute my legs didn't have the drive to make up the time on the back 4 miles. Finished in 3:02 which was still a pb (versus 3:09 in San Fran) and I gave it absolutely everything I had. Dug deep to my limits and then pushed even harder beyond them so I'm satisfied. Note - not happy but satisfied...I know I can do better! In fact, all of my race times at shorter distances suggest I am capable of around 2:55 - I think my infamous skinimal training schedule may have vivdly shown its limitations...I guess a couple of loops of the park every weekend can only get you so far!
“Went to a great desserterie to celebrate called Finale - I highly recommend it next time you are in Boston. See you on the track soon!

Marion Nike Jones is still some weeks away from a return to competitive action, according to her agent Charles Wells. “She's still not ready," said Wells. "In another three weeks she should be ready to make an appearance.
Chrisy in Boston has worked every Boston Marathon for the past eon and she was asking ‘What did you look like when you ran Boston? I might have seen you at the church…’ Boston was not a good experience for me, I had plantar f. due to the saucony shoes I was wearing at the time… and a did you know -- Starbucks designed this uniform!
Robert Cheruiyot, "Boston is not won from out in front, but from behind with pushing."
Back from five days in Boston, what a hoot.. And how tiring. This picture is of Robert, who is actually a close neighbor to Paul Tergat’s. Very nice he won, and I must admit I did not pick it. Starbucks picked Rita. The best bit about Boston is meeting all the old friends again, and making new acquaintances -- like Meb’s brother Merhawi, and the famous Dr David Martin who was kind enough to say great things about Train Hard Win Easy..
Anyway so my favorite on paper was William Kiplagat, and by all accounts you can say he ‘lost’ with a #7 place.. But was it a bad tip? Well the day before it was a great tip. Kiplagat had beentraining with Bernard Barmasai who last week ran 2:08 and said William was about a minute better than him… fair enough…
The night before the race. William is awoken with a thirst like the drought of the nile running down his throat. So he gets up, and not wishing to wake his sleeping room mate Robert Cheruiyot, does not turn on the light. William trips, falls forward, bangs his head and ends up in the bath tub. The head will not stop bleeding, he can’t sleep and is dizzy on the morning of the race -- go figure!
Rita Jeptoo is in Italy, and her story is even more bizarre, almost to the stage of what really did happen. The way she explained it was that she copied down the address of her house correctly and the postal people delivered the passport to the wrong house. The passport was reported lost, then she told the organizers she could not travel out of Italy to Boston. Suddenly the passport somehow turns up in her hands, she gets a later flight -- arrives in Boston days later that she is supposed to, dismisses the jetlag and wins the race. On top of this she was told the passport would be sent to her without a visa for the US, but somehow the visa turned up in the passport -- some things are meant to happen. Then we can take the case of Sammy Nyangicha, who had not been to Boston since 1995, Sammy is now the coach.. Anyway this is too long a story, and there are things to do, so I will save this $10,000 Master’s winning story for later…
Back after the war a man who had been saved three times from the nazi's just because he had ran in the Berlin Olympics came to run Boston. He came from a starving nation but brought a spotlight to the famine with his appearance.. they offerrd him bib number one, but instead he thought "Seven is the lucky number in Greece, I'll take 77 for double luck!" Well he won the race, and died aged 77! Funnily enough I once went to a race that I was defending and they offered me bib number one, instead I asked for 777 -- does that mean I will live till I am...
Anyway I am drifitng now -- we are working on a challenge for 07 when an attempt will be made to run the Athens Marathon and the ING-New York Marathon on the same day.. with the help of a jet.. it is going to happen, and remember you got the scoop here first!!
Nice also to catch up with Moses Tanui who was looking great in a fine suit, and also the Peter Angwenyi from the Kenyan Federation who assures me that the 16th of December will be Shoe4Africa day in Kenya.
Okay, so Ivuti is out of the field, so I will now go for Ben Maiyo as the fave. I talked a bit with Mr Suzuki, the coach of the Japanese fave and am hoping to talk to her in a couple of hours. As usual eating a lot of junky food and working hard. Starbucks says the Simba is inthe form of her life right now, and she'll be doing the trifactor in the USA in June - Freihofers, the Mini, and Steamboat.. she wants fast times -- I think she'll get them.

Doris preaches in the church in Iten. This is the church that the Simba goes to each Sunday too.
Starbucks got to Boston via Bangkok, six hours in Nairobi airport, a la Europe, to America in a day and a half.. That is jet lag.
Jelena is the hot fave for the win on Monday--

Boston news will be here- Clickitto.

Elias Kurgat…near km 13 at the Chateau de Vincennes in the Paris Marathon 9 April 2006 - photo from Stuart A.
The BBC website www.bbc.co.uk/sport will stream the London Marathon along with text reports, video interviews and reaction - plus an interactive map of the course for those lucky souls living in Blighty -- commentary coming from Steve ’Sunders’ Cram, Big Brendan Foster and Paul Dickenson. Nance aka the Grapefruit whom is now gladly back in NYC after a year in England, Rebecca our learner runner who is learning quickly, Kathy - the running star from 5th Ave, Eve from the reservoir Dogs, Chuckychina who cruised the workout on his voyage to Boston, Rick - the same story as Chucky who is going to happen in Beantown, Cruiser stepping it up again, Trackman Dave striding out well, Christine J. - long time no see… and some one whose name we don’t know. Twas a nice night…. And then up to the West Side Brewery for a continuance on that theme.

Run the Bridges of New York City…. Article, and maps.
I have been eating so much of late, and running so little it is a bewilderment I can still wear the clothes I have in my wardrobe, I think I may be looking at a size up coming soon. Andrey twice won Boston and nearly all the major road races as a Master at the close of the Nineties.
Hearing from the Flash, maybe a comeback on the cards? The former American Marathon Record Holder was one of the most brutal running training demons in the 90’s. A legend in his time, and it may not be all over, if only we can get him to move from where he currently lives in No-Runnersville USA.
Women - Meseret Defar, Ethiopia, 14:46*, $5000 plus 2006 Suzuki Grand Vitara
2) Isabella Ochichi, Kenya, 14:53, $3500
3) Sentayehu Ejigu, Ethiopia, 15:17, $2000
4) Benita Johnson, Australia, 15:19, $1000
5) Edna Kiplagat, Kenya, 15:37, $800
The brunchfunfast lasted longer than the run -- nice company, great day. Asking Kathrine about the Avon story (She started the whole thang), "You should read my autobiography," Good answer.. but on that note next week her, and Roger's, new book comes out with Rodale Press.. check it out! The women -
Irina Timofeyeva 2:27.22 from fellow Russian Natalya Volgina 2:27.32, with Kenya's Pamela Chepchumba third in 2:29.48. And Asmae, who also had an EPO incident a couple of years back, from Morocco, failed to come to the finish line not running the 2:24 she had hoped for. Saw loads of people out there, all the faces that you see every week, and then some of the unexpected.. Like Andrey Kutnesov the masters ace who ran great a few years back dominating the US 40+ roads with world class times. After the race I met up with TGV for breakfast at the Trump International. He has just bought a new car (44th in six years) - A Porsche Cayman.. And Sarah (Mrs TGV) was there, so I asked her how her new range rover was doing but it appears TGV’s habits do not stop at himself -- he also switcher’s for the wife too, “I like the Range Rover, but Marty bought me a Lexus, then he now has me driving an S-type Merecedes… you know Marty…” She tried to stop him once, but the guy has his addictions… The Cayman, in dark blue seems nice…. Back up town over East…Then I had a meeting at Ithaka on East 86th, an authentic Greek place (If you count the balalaika drones and blue and white tiling as the done dab), the salad was the best part of the meal - do Greek‘s make good pasta? Salads perhaps.. It was a day of calories, and their collecting, as next stop was Rosa Mexicana (west side) where spicy guacamole (made at the table for 100% freshness) and mole sauce on enchiladas was better food. The mole sauce there is great, though always not as sweet as I am expecting, or perhaps wishing for… the dessert, the Keyline Pie on a cookie dough base was okay, but more of a tease than a taste as the mousse was so light it passed through the mouth and size was childesque in portion dimensions.. Though The Rosa is defo a good top notch Mexican place and good for being able to talk without overthrowing the next table as is often the case with Manhattan restaurants…. Next the next stop for amounting calories was the Emerald Inn, same neighborhood (near Columbus circle) which is a throwback to an English Pub, complete with British swearing, rugby shirt wearing (whatever else could they be in as Football is so last year) drinkers bemoaning the state of all affairs.. Anyway it was liquid cals here and the Harp lager was highly recommended.. Then a pop across the road to the Flicks to watch Inside Man, the latest Spike Lee movie.. More on that later… Ready for Paris! And from the NYRR:
On the treadmill talk-- One woman had her period that morning (thanks for that piece of info we were thinking), the other’s daughter had (“Wait till you and your daughter coincide”), Although I felt kind’ve obliged to jump in the converse at this point I had nothing valid to add… One judge arrived and moved did he not, one girl had ordered pizza when the food arrived on the table she dished the salmon, someone was having lasik surgery, she was a Psychotherapist who advises trips to shrinks do little more than increase people’s vocab for marital disputes and claims.. “healing is bad for the long term business..” She just needed a headband… and I? Well I was drinking rich, dark n delicious coffee that tasted of… coffee.. And on that note the next person I literally ran into was the ever cheerful Mr. Eli Zabar, the Upper East Side Food Icon.. Next stop: The park was half empty as the rain clouds jiggled along the brow of the horizon (worse weather was to come)… next up was a peaceful funeral with a 1960’s yellowed chequered cab as the follow car with its lights flashing and the Beatles registration.. Like a libertango waltz through the city… Next a meeting with Chubbs about a race sponsorship - he is planning his tactics for racing this weekend.. If he has a good day he may catch sight of the Rube, Anil came in, with Todd, and along with Jeremy the talk invariably turned to what men always talk about when women are not present; body weight.. Anil tried to talk his way into the 160-category, Todd claimed his loose fitting T shirt was a size small, Chubbs said he could now wear Cara’s jeans, and Jeremy - well he is skinny so he just munched on candy bars… customers came and went.. Nobody noticed…. Then, now it was snowing, I zipped back home to pick up a message to meet the RunDoc in ten minutes; he’d been trying to reach me at the store but apparently nobody was picking up the phone. So I peddled backwards to go back in time, fly down Lex, mounting the pavement to avoid being hit by a car that swooped three lanes to snag a parking space risking life and limb as always is done in NYC, to arrive a couple a minutes early -- enough to talk to an Ethiopian lady in the Waiting room about the price of Oil, the weather, and what happened to the quality of waiting room magazines.. Then had lunch with the rundoc discussing the perils of Asmae Leghzaoui using esthetic orthotics un-tested that are currently being UPS-ed to her via PA, on their way to Paris.. Ah New York Mornings.. But before we’re done - the restaurant was Cucina on 74th between Mad & 5th… been there a few times and it is reliable.. The salmon was dried out though. The table bread good, the potatoes (roasted) nice crisp and hot. The coffee so so.. And I will have to say the vegetables were forgettable as I can’t remember what they were. The service was neat, timely and at tentative… and I recall they do a good brunch there. Décor? Typical, the seats are a bit boney…. Denise, and her volume, was down (but up) - she’s had her hair layered and again had to steal my hair band.. I mean do I look like an accessories guy? And Michael came down too, though only partook in a segment before declaring, “That’s it, I’m done!” Great to See Shawn found us; I guess the familiar ground and a set location! And trackman David was back at home, with Centuryman busting a valve chasing him down. Then all the way from London Blighty Robin a newbie, who I mistook for the husband of Nancy Grapefruit (“Give him a chance, we only met a few weeks ago!). Nance ran a steamer, and yes she did bring me two grapefruits! We had two Kathys -- The Original MasterBlaster herself in fine fettle and form, who once ran the Israeli marathon with a broken leg and Kathy G. from the marathon uptown group.. And on that note Mary D came dressed in a fine body warmer jacket ran some impressive 400’s “I used to run track 800’s” and it showed. Luiz with his hair cropped short was MR metronome, and Sir Alec managed not to pull anything except his tongue… then we had another newbie, Eric, who is the boss of Kathy G (good move bring yer Boss to the track). Then Cruiser was down looking strong this season, Rachel came for the first time “Am I supposed to be feeling a bit… y’know” Yes! And then someone who politely asked if he could jump in… didna catch his name but he ran well….. A nice night, great to see everyone, and of course I had the most fun -- it always cool to see everyone run. So I met Salad Girl at the supermarket, in the washing up liquid aisle no less. She has lost her job, and I was ashamed to ask what job because I have not a clue what she does in her professional life…. Anyway after browsing the job web sites she came to the conclusion that there is nothing currently out there for her…”So now I have the perfect excuse to eat!” (As if she did not before) -- what about this for a plan, she already weighs a size and a half, and now she plans on gaining weight until she can approach a TV reality lose weight show, or sell herself to a diet solution where she gets paid a tremendous amount for losing weight… hm, not convinced about these avenues… but what to say --she was hyped about it! Another woman, another story--
She, is looking, for Sponsorship to train for the Olympics; “As one of Manhattan’s only national-class female triathletes..” We are talking about Flying Fiona.. And if you are interested in helping her out and being a part of team Fiona, and of course taking immense pride should she get there then send us an email and we’ll shoot you her extensive resume and contact details Reading we see she competed in the 2003 Triathlon World Championships! "Our strategy almost worked but she was still able to come back at the end. Lornah was leading from the gun till 7700 meters. Anyway, this was the only way and Silver is great. Next day she was not concentrated because the 4 K was only a bonus. She never expected to go for a medal again and missed the silver/bronze by a few seconds. We are in Thailand now, HOLIDAY!" Awesome -- huge well done to a great coach and athlete team - husband n wife team; the worlkd famous Starbucks n Simba!
KENYA IS BACK!!!! Perfect team score in the junior women, 1-4! Team gold in the men’s 4km…. Team Gold the Men‘s 12k, Team Gold the Junior men…. The guy who won the Juniors, Mangata, I have some nice video footage of him sitting in Brother Colm‘s back garden washing his pumas earlier this year. He used to be running on the Banana road each morning, no doubt the secret to his success… or was it hanging on to Choge and Songok in his speedwork? The Silver Simba!! To go with her World Half Silver the Simba collects the hardware at the 8km long course! And a fine fifth place in the short course; all we can say is look out Mombassa 2007 for the Simba!…
Defending champion Tirunesh Dibaba of Ethiopia won the women's long race, covering the 8km course in 25:21secs.
Lornah Kiplagat of the Netherlands was five seconds off the pace in second, while Ethiopia's Meselech Melkamu was third.
I ran with Monsieur Mileage, now I am running again. I told him I was a beginner runner again, and so he upped the pace to kill me on the bridle path. I am progressing; two weeks ago I did a mile a day, then I upped it to three miles a day… coming back! So I tried to do five with the Omelet king of the Upper West side whilst we discussed our next races to shoot for in the months to come. Up until noon today a brief chat with Jelena Prokopcuka
“Well it is the new P.O. policy, now if you have anything to cover up those markings…” and low and behold, in the chances of a feather passing through a block of ice, I feel in my pocket and I have these sticky labels used for decorating things! So one by one, as these critters are titchy, I cover all the print… and anyway as I am doing it the lady gets sympathetic and starts joining in, so we are there holding up the progress of the entire Yorkville community putting little colored stickers over any words or pictures on the box! Took some time I can tell you. But les than it would have taken to go all the way home. No waiting for a table, big plus. The salmon was nice, the potatoes diner standard, the green beans a little oily but okay, at least fresh, and the ice cream (pistacchio) was great. The service was very good, considering we took an hour, or more, to get the order together, there was patience and politeness in that department. All in all a great place if you are looking for somewhere inMidtown with good service, okay food, and a diner setting. The best part for me was chatting all evening with a good friend of mine; Suneet. The man who was pictured a couple of days ago on an ice face climbing Suneet travels the world to the nether regions, grew up in London, and is a runner. The latter part is how I met him, and although I have had a while and a half since I last saw him we always have great talks and good times. Ah, one complaint was the table bread was a bit dried out.
So people are touting Choge to be the challenger to Bekele, let’s not also forget Songok -- here’s a picture of how close Songok got to Choge in one race this past season, a few weeks ago, and actually in the subsequent race he did indeed beat Choge -- all in all the men’s 4k is looking like a fab race. Visit the IAAF.org site to get a picture of how to watch the web cam thingy. Meanwhile... It’s the Kid’s Choice Awards and our Shoe4Africa Spokeswoman Shon Gables is off to attend in LA… And talking flying - catch this deal; $49 to fly United Airlines between New York and Chicago. Travel on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Saturday Travel April 4-June 30 Speaking of moving I was at the Gym, listening to Bobster Marley at Volume eleven plus one and waiting for this one machine. This woman was on it; and taking flipping ages… no sweat, I was not in a hurry. Then she turned to me and mouthed something, so I spat back an impatient smile and continued listening to Rasta Bob.. About a minute later she turns to me looking a bit concerned and starts talking again. Anyway my MO at the gym is Mr. Never-talk, and I can’t blow it now, so I simply point to my headphones and smile.. About a minute or maybe even two later an instructor comes over and lifts the weight up.. The woman was stuck on the machine. I believe she let me know what she thought of my manners, but at this time I was lost in another track…either waiting in vain, or at a punky reggae party. The big CP race this weekend is the Scotland Run, and there a few scots coming over for the event. Let's hope they do a good job of flying the tartan... and the important thing to remember for this race - the clocks go back an hour - it's that time of the year.... Set that coffee maker... Pat Duffy of the Flyers is taking his pipes out for this one, "Rather than running in this race, I will again be donning one of my kilt (with Flyer shirt and running shoes) playing my pipes at the NE corner of the circle drive, by the 102nd transverse (right where you guys will be finishing the last big climb in the Harlem Hills given the clockwise direction of this race). In an attempt to give you a little extra inspiration at that difficult mid point of the race, I plan to be playing "Du gamla, Du fria" for you lead runners. Believe it or not, it actually sounds pretty darn good on the bagpipes!" Good for you Pat! and of course internationally - The World XC Champs in Japan should be a fab event... it is also the last year that the men's/women's 4k is being run, next year the senior events will be 12 & 8k only, as in the old format.
"I have detailed my army to keep an eye on them at all times because they are capable of taking off and disappearing completely," The Kenyans, rightly, are upbeat about the World Champs this weekend in Japan… meanwhile The Simba and Starbucks lead the Dutch Delegation and are passing through One night in Bangkok, and will be in Japan today…. And word on the street is that Lornah is on fire…. Meanwhile Shoe4Africa got interviewed by the Westchester paper…
Solomon Busendich who led the leaders through 15 kilometres (43:38), at the CPC race this weekend, with his wife and kid back home in Kenya. Over on another fast course, CPC in Den Haag -
1. Simone Staicu, HUN 1:12:49
2. Selma Borst, NED 1:13:31 (National champion)
3. Lisa Wiklund, SWE 1:16:52 Women’s 5000 -
1. Isabella Ochichi (Kenya) 14:57.84
2. Joanne Pavey (England) 14:59.08
3. Lucy Wangui (Kenya) 15:00.20 and the men’s 1500 - 1. Nicholas Willis (New Zealand) 3min 38.49secs
2. Nathan Brannen (Canada) 3:39.20
3. Mark Fountain (Australia) 3:39.33 & Men’s 10,000 - Boniface Kiprop (Uganda) 27min 50.99 sec
2. Geoffrey Kipngeno (Kenya) 27:51.16
3. Fabian Joseph (Tanzania) 27:51.99 of S4A! So we nipped down the road to Zoe’s that has great reviews (though surprisingly their published wine list is not what appears very much on the wine list where a certain doubling was put into play!) We had a most fun night; and a s a food review; we stared with the Wood Oven Mushroom Clusters, that were fab, and not with anyone overbearing taste, but a ‘cluster’ of differing ambiences, enter second bottle of wine, and then for the main dish; Seared Arctic Char, Truffle Whipped Potatoes, Black Trumpet Mushrooms, Salsify
& Caramelized Shallots… And Cara had the same thing, with Jerry going for the Black Sea Bass … the char had a baby salmon, with a fattier feel that was very nice… Gripes; the table bread was not that special (to which the waiter might have added, “Didn’t stop you eating it all eh?).. And desserts - after long deliberations I went for the Warm Strawberry-Rhubarb Crumble Tart
Linzer Crust, Crystalized Ginger Ice Cream that was superb, absolutely. Cara suggested that she was going to pick, so we ordered Warm Dark Chocolate Brownie Cake Peanut Butter Ice Cream & Salted Peanut Caramel Sauce (Chubb’s thought this better than his) and it was very, very rich and tasty, and Chubbo’s? He took the Citrus-Ricotta Cheesecake Biscotti Crust, Zested Citrus Salad which was delicious, but infinitesimal in sizing… Chubb’s added that being on the larger size of his desired weight he wanted a small dessert, “We’re getting scales in the store so I can keep checking on my fluctuations throughout the day…” Anyway It is on Prince Street, and highly recommended… …. It was touching to see the names of the dead written on the doors of the funeral homes, and seeing the employment agencies with hoards of men shuffling under boards of job listings just as the voice narrator described, then we went into a apartment house, the narrator says, “Careful,. You are not supposed to be here” just at that moment there was a Chinese man is standing in the stairwell looking at us with a ‘what are you doing here?‘ expression, then after going to the second floor it told you to look through a crack in the door of a certain door and see the Chinese mob sitting around, and low and behold -- it was true! Well whether they were mobsters or not is not known…. The sweatshop we were to visit had closed down, but the fact that it took you into a building you would have never thought to enter was unique! The stores were amazing so we spent a lot of time shopping for noodles, and things like that…next stop is Brighton Beach to do a Russia tour… Then we went for a glass of wine at Café Gitane, which was very nice as usual; fabbo that place. Or is it the company? On Tuesday night when I was leading the Flyers through Boot Camp we heard a ‘dog’ howl whilst up on the reservoir, I remember thinking it sounded like a wild dog, so I shouted out, “Faster or the dog’ll get you!“ Turns out it was a coyote!
“A police helicopter and sharpshooters armed with tranquilizer guns were no match for a wily coyote that remained on the loose in Central Park.
Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe was among those to spot the animal Tuesday in the southeast corner of the park, not far from the tony Upper East Side.
"It didn't look the least bit worried," he said. "He leaped over the fence and disappeared in the park." England pulls out a couple of surprise results: W1500-
Lisa Dobriskey (England) 4:06.21
2. Sarah Jamieson (Australia) 4:06.64
3. Hayley Tullett (Wales) 4:06.76
4. Helen Clitheroe (England) 4:06.81
5. Carmen Douma-Hussar (Canada) 4:07.48 & in the 400m 1. Christine Ohuruogu (England) 50.28 secs
2. Tonique Darling (Bahamas) 50.76
3. Novlene Williams (Jamaica) 51.12 (Kelly Sotherton matched her England team-mate Dean Macey by winning the heptathlon/decathlon too for anglaterre). Dorcus Inzikuru took the gold in the steeplechase for Uganda in 9:19.51 I remember once the bitter sweet of his first age group award, when he was chatting up a girl at the post race party, and had obviously adapted himself to her age group, then the Over forties was announced, and Larry yelled out as he claimed a prize, to which she turned and said, “You said you were…!” The exposure! That was a funny day….
“Lesson 1 -- Timing IS EVERYTHING! I thought, since this is my first time EVER appearing in a major motion picture -- I'll arrive fashionably late. (Don't want to look desperate) Of course, that works if you're Denzel Washington, Jodie Foster, Clive Owen or Spike Lee!! For me -- well, let's put it this way -- I've got alot of work to do if I plan on becoming a star. Plenty of press photos were taken 15 minutes earlier... TOO BAD I'M NOT IN ANY OF THEM. If you see any... just know, I was close by.
“Lesson 2 -- I'm a household name -- BUT ONLY IN MY HOUSEHOLD. I almost didn't get into Zeigfield theatre. The press line was gone -- Security was closing the doors -- celebrities were seated inside. But out in the freezing cold, stood me and countless other ticketless passers-by. "Sir, I'm Shon Gables. I have 2 tickets... I'm supposed to be in there"... "Shon, who?" the doorman responded. YIKES! That's like frostbite. Fortunately, they felt sorry.
“Lesson 3 -- WHERE'S THE LINE FOR THE STARS? I arrived at the gala after party -- expecting to be whisked in to the VIP area to share pleasant memories of our days on the set... and discuss our upcoming nominations. After all -- I thought I gave an Oscar worthy performance. Instead my ticket -- NOT AN ALL ACCESS PASS -- entitled me to wait in line with people I did not recognize from the movie. Nor did they recognize me. Guess what??? You can learn alot about a person in 45 minutes.
“Bottom line, Inside Man is GREAT movie! And I'm even more greatful to have even been apart of it.” Did you ever have a freaky coincidence happening? I keep on having them all the time; just kind of fun things that make me say wow… Well it happened this again this past Sunday.. It all began in the morning when I went down to Gracie Square - one of NYC’s most exclusive dwelling areas. The building is beyond the expensive, and has been featured in many films. Each floor on the elevator leads off into one apartment with incredible wrap around views of the Mayor’s Mansion and the East River, when you leave to get in the limosuine (that enters from inside one side of the building on one street and exits through the other on the next street!) the car stops at different lobbies for each apartment. Well I was there to visit Al Gordon and go with him up to the armory. Anyway in the building
Sidney Lumet, the famous film director, used to live… and live at the time when he was divorcing Gloria Vanderbilt. Anyway later that afternoon I went to see Doctor Dan to play music.. And guess what -- he lives in Gloria V’s actual old apartment!! Is that freaky or what?? The amazing Al Gordon, and Bernie the former Chairman - equally amazing. At Dan’s this guy called Matt turns up who is a friend to Dan’s, and whose wife is running the More this weekend in Central Park, with a Gibson Les Paul 1958 sunburst guitar bought for $130,000!! We played for a couple of hours, and I was asking, “Don’t the neighbors mind?” AS we had four guitars and two harps at full blast… but apparently not. I recall when I was a nipper how happy our next door neighbors were when I used to play the banjo. World Champion Shoe4Africa athlete, Fabiano Joseph was fifth in that race!
On Saturday I ran the Brooklyn Half Marathon with Shon Gables, a news anchor for CBS Television. She is an absolutely amazing person and I was literally blown away by her incredible life story that belongs in the movies. And what is she doing today? She’s walking down the red carpet as she is in the new Denzel Washington film, called Inside Man.. Want a step further? She is acting the role of herself in the film! The pinnacle huh? Anyway another super plus is she is running for the Shoe4Africa Team!! We ran 2-hrs 30-minutes which I thought was great to say she has not been training for the last month! Here's Samson Ramadhani
picking up his shoes at a Shoe4Africa sponsored race a while back when he got on the program -- well he is now the Commonwealth Games Marathon Champion 2006 succeeding (click here to see Francis Robert Naali picking up his shoes) the reigning Commonwealth Games Marathon Champion of the 2002 Games!! Kenya's Fred Mogaka (who used to train in Sweden and run for the Sauconios) took the bronze before Britain’s Dan Robinson. Small world -- I used to run on the same team as Fred back in the nineties! Australia's Scott Westcott and Andrew Letherby finished in fourth and fifth -- A fab result for The Oz Road Warrior Andrew Letherby, another athlete in the annals; I used to train with him in Albuquerque and this guy is fated to continue to do great things in the marathon; he won a bronze at the last commonwealth games.
“Very different strategy in the men's race. The Tanzanians set off like the fire brigade
right from the start. Isegwe cruising ahead on 2:08 pace, followed with a gap by
Yator, Ramadhani and Fred Mogaka. The Ozzies and Dan Robinson mainly stayed
together in a group. The race was relative fast. At some stage Isegwe had a lead of
three minutes. I think after half way he slowed down and Mogaka closed up on him.
Then suddenly his hamstring sized up and he is forced to pull out. Mogaka leading
now with Ramadhani chasing him. Yator the other Kenyan faded a bit. Ramadhani
pulled away with 2 miles to go and Mogaka couldn't respond. In the back, the group
around Robinson broke up and it was only Dan Robinson who was trying to chase
down Yator. Eventually he got him and finished 3rd.” Thanks Urban! "On behalf of Jasper the cat..." Thanks to Eldo for giving us in this picture! And pretending to be a pop star later with Doctor Dan as we will be entertaining (annoying) the neighbor Paul Mc Cartney again, if he is home, with the sounds of spangling guitars and harmonicas. Other things heard, it was my friend Camilla’s birthday on Monday; she used to live in a village with 160-people (where I once stayed, Overhogdal in the north of Sweden, though geographically in the middle of Sweden) but now she lives in London, and after many, many years away from the tinyville and living in the Hi-life she now wants to go back to small living. How could one tire of London? I suppose the answer to that is easily. Now New York, that is a different bag of worms. Wow, soon it is Boston - was thinking about it as some schedules are wrapping up for the event, and I was talking to Fred Treseler who handles the invited athletes at the event, and a 100-other running related things -- he used to be the Fila boss for the Running team. Tomorrow he‘s doing the press release for that great project he has with the schools in Boston & Kenya. Out in Central Park last night - Constanza zooming along as she was dreaming of racing in Bogota, Michelle with the Tiffany gloves who literally flew on the bonus intervals, “But I’m going to Brooklyn only as a long run…“ Denise “I took a taxi to the workout, for the first time - four blocks“ (hey turning up is the main part), Cindy on the money with great consistency throughout the night, Shawn - She’s made three in a row without getting lost, “Yeah, and it is dark tonight.” Chuckychina powering through getting stronger as the night got older, “Are you sure I’m going to be recovered by Brooklyn?” Can you breath- then push harder - this was a non-breathing session The Commander Kevin running on fumes, Kwasi eating the knees, lying on the ground under the purple skies with a howling gale groaning about something that could have been Danish, Doug getting his endurance into line, Trackman Dave with his natty patriotic shoes, and Tom in his Ferrari outfit… then after pizza at a place on second avenue called Nick’s pizza that got an unbelievably high 23-food rating from Zagat’s this year, must be a record for a pizza restaurant right? Kwasi, “That was a tough workout. I had sideburns at the 6th
set!” His site is synematics.com that we were talking about earlier… And up in Canada, Eldo Lise talks about, “just finished leveling concrete floor- it looked a lot easier in the picture. If I was smart I would date a contractor until all renos are done. ah well- good learning experience. for what- not sure.” The learning is for IF you ever move! “March 11th Collegiate HS placed 3d at the National Indoor Champs at the
Armory at 4 x mile with Chris running a 4:16 anchor. The top teams
made All-American. March 12th he was 4th in the mile at nationals in 4:18. The top 6 are
All-Americans. 4x mile relay: 4:16.75. A huge breakthrough. That’s at least a 4:15 for 1600.” Thanks Bob. I mean Kenya sent a far, far smaller team, has the Commonwealths, and the world cross depleting its athletes (Britain can’t argue it has that conflict surely) and won medals -- now I am not suggesting that the two countries should be compared, but leave the excuses in the long jump pit; because anyone must have their head in the sand to think that this was anything less than a sign of the times. A radical shake up is what they need; get the ribena out. Both Samson B & Salim K are running Rotterdam next month, and we now hear that Catherine the Great will not be running Boston against Jelena as she feels the time is too short after the Osaka win. The big match up in marathon running must be Noguchi against Takahashi.. A modern day Ovett Vs Coe. Kenyans are often this way, they train in a large group all doing the same stuff, then at the end of march they get a bit specialized in their preps. I remember talking to 8:03 steeplechaser Patrick Sang who said the same thing; he thought it better to just do the running training, and never did the hurdle part until he was in Europe, usually in Switzerland. Renato has an apartment in Iten now, for the next twenty years anyway. There are some carvings made into the front of the building, the ‘runner’ is supposed to be of the likeness of his star athlete, Shaheen. The view out of his apartment is nothing less than spectacular; and when the sun rises with a colorful sky then it becomes breath taking, but often the sun rise is plain yellow. Already I am making plans for the next trip to Africa, and speaking Shoe4Africa I am very, very pleased to announce that we have a new Director on the Board, no stranger to this website -- Peter Farago who will be a great asset to the cause… anyway back to those carvings… 03/13 Anyway thanks goodness I was on a bike so the perpetual U-turns, wrong way streets and pavement hopping was a tad easier than otherwise.. Besides he was, as usual late, and I had planned on being two minutes early.. Whatever. So Kwasi - who is he? Came to the Utah city in 1994 as a basketball player on an exchange program. Did okay, studied Fine Arts. Kwasi recently went to Jamaica with his girlfriend, who the last time I inquired about resulted in him sending me her website link where the home page has a picture of her seated on a toilet, hm, that was the last question I asked about her for a long time(!)… And Brown the restaurant, well the waitress had a bit of an attitude, “Are you now ready to order?” On the third time of asking as we were glugging coffee and talking about 101-things.. But after we’d been there for a couple of hours the place grows on you, good music, the bread was pretty poor, the croissant with apricots inside was nice, the coffee decent but weak in strength, and not to be traveled for.. The patrons, the guy next to me was very polite and complimentary, the woman on the other side was one of these people who bring a ‘project’ into the café and sit at a table writing whilst talking into an ear-pieced cellphone… quite disconcerting.. The waiter needs to learn that his voice is not a match for dueting with the voice on the CD-player, but all in all not too bad, we’ll give it a 6.5/10.. I forgot to mention the worse part - an unreadable menu - no spacing between all the food groups, a whole page of crammed choices on a worn piece of paper that is confused and muddles, then snatched from you… plus it had my least fav forms of abbreviations, like mac n cheese -- I mean macaroni is a nice word, don’t make is sound fast foodish. Way way behind Café Gitane, but there ya go, got to have standards.. I’ll have to do it again, but probably in three years. The day before I had breakfast at Wholefoods at Columbus Circle in the AOL building - that was irreplaceable, but for other reasons. And the men‘s? 1 129 Bekele Kenenisa ETH 7:39.32
2 339 Shaheen Saif Saaeed QAT 7:41.28
3 251 Kipchoge Eliud KEN 7:42.58 -- Bekele (“After winning titles indoors and in cross country, indoors is like a fun run for me.”) becomes the first ever to win a World title on the XC, Track, and Indoor, and when he adds a road title to the resume it will be complete. That used to be Moses Tanui’s goal, and he got damn close - World track Champion at 10,000, World Road at the Half Marathon, and twice second at the World Cross Country. Maria Mutola’s 800m win was in1:58.90 as she beat Jamaican Kenia Sinclair, 1:59.54, with Morrocco’s Hasna Benhassi third in 2:00.34. Maria’s 7th title! Then to make matters worse I was zapping down Broadway and my flippin saddle hinge snapped.. Again the leg movement that ensued did nothing to help in the healing process of whatever is wrong with the limb.. Luckily I had a monkey wrench in my pocket, so I locked the wrench on the down tube and jammed the handle into the saddle so I could continue… a similar thing happened in my teenage years when I rode my motorcycle up the side of a car that had the bad manners to pull out in front of me; my foot rest acted as a tin opener through the side of the vehicle until it eventually fell off.. So I undid the cable to the drum, then clasped a monkey wrench to the sprocket where the brake pedal used to be and had a new makeshift foot rest, not a back brake, but on a motorcycle they are over rated - a front brake is all you need to absquatulate off down the road. “a revolutionary travel running concept.‘ I started on this project last year just to be the running coach, then I started to do the scripts (New York was the pilot), then doing the routes, then finding the athletes that we ‘meet‘ along the route, then measuring the courses -- it was a fun trip, doing interviews in people‘s hotel room as they swooped through town, or driving to East Germany to small obscure places in search for Olympic Stars, or tracking down running camps in the middle of nowhere with the hope of finding some ‘legend‘ who was rumored to be there, or riding the taxis round London trying to find neighborhoods that I did not know existed, or the day we took the train from London and the recording guy had forgotten to bring the microphone…. Sitting in a stairwell in a hotel with Grete, and in the fire escape of a place in Boston with Rod Dixon, then there was the Billy Rodgers interview in a ball room… Gary Muhrke we did ina shoe storage room, Tom Fleming in his apartment after getting lost on the New Jersey something for 90-minutes…. All these things and more - what a ride. I hope it works out. I never got all the way through the promotional film on the web site as the download was taking longer than my concentration allowed, but I am sure it was not as good as the clip on the pics page that we originally did - mind you watching that one is pretty uninformative as there is no sound (thank goodness). Some of the athletes we interviewed: Waldemar Cierpinski, Grete Waitz, Gary Muhrke, Mike Gratton, Hugh Jones, Bill Rodgers, Herbert Steffny, Tom Fleming, Nina Kuscsik, Stephane Diagona, Joyce Smith, Huw Lobb, Dominique Chavalier and a host of others... Muneria reaches the summit of the hill work Following the hills we then drove back to Renato‘s house, and walked to the nearby restaurant, on the way we bumped into Daham Najim Bashir who happened to have one of the fastest times, 3:31:04, for the 1500m last year.
Bashir was soon to start having Arabic lessons, he knew a couple of words and wanted to expand the vocab - good for him, Kenyans are actually very talented linguists already speaking their tribal tongue, English, and Swahili. Hellen first appeared at the Los Angeles Olympiucs, and she is making a comeback this year -- she ran at the Eldoret XC meet, and is determined to be back in form by the summer. She is also the former course record holder at Peachtree where she ran a great 30:52.. Until the Simba ran 30:32 The House that Moses Kiptanui built, his offices are the top floor, on the right. After lunch I went to see the man who won the Golden League 800m Ostrava, he also won at Cottbus, and a number of other meets. He also holds the track records at both Eldoret and Iten‘s running tracks -- pretty awesome resume eh? A really nice guy to boot, John Litei, a Masai runner. He gave me a beaded bracelet (coincidence as the last one I got was from Konchellah who was a roommate to John) and he had to push so hard to get it on my arm I think it will never ever come off. He was telling me some amazing stories that really belong in a book… and after that I went to see Silvia as I had promised to visit her on Sunday but I was too tired and hungry after the long haul in church. As we chatted Cleo. Rop and Meshrack Sang also dropped by -- they will be competing this weekend in the Mumbai Marathon. Silvia is planning on trying for the Kenyan short course team, she needs to be top six -- I will watch the results with eager eyes. All about the café we tried to get too. Well I knew about the cycling team because I do in fact have a pair of Runcible Spoon socks from that said team, as I used to coach one of them.. But the bit about wanting caffeine after being 6-inches behind another man’s tire… hm glad to report I know nothing of those things… We wish her a speedy recovery, and are sure that she will be on fire next month in Londinium. Speaking Old Chubbs was talking about the good old days and how as of late he has been looking up peoples’ race histories on the NYRR site from the era long gone by… The days when Herb-the-Verb was a star, and RicenBeans too(!) and on the Herb note apparently he is walking round with a signed piece of paper for a $50 bet that Danny The Dollarman will not beat his lifetime PR in the Brooklyn Half. Danny, confident after running 1:13 in Grete’s last year, challenged Herb to this bet but now is sure he may have to cough up the bucks as Herb’s 1:11 is looking out of reach. The following day it was a run as usual before going to the track. Renato Canova was down on the track as were a large group of athletes -- both his and other groups. The girl who was third in the steeplechase Helsinki was doing a session of 400‘s, Ezekiel Kemboi was doing something on his own. Salim too… there was a huge group of 800m runners doing a step ladder session… and I had a nice chat with Renato about training, he has some nice ideas… There was also a Tanzanian guy whose name right now eludes me, Sulle -- that‘s it, bronze medallist world half, and the most smooth long distance runner on the track was the Olympic Bronze medallist -- Moses Masai, I can only say WOW! When you watched him you imagined he was jogging, but when you timed him -- wow.
Kathy Martin, the unstoppable Nitro of Northport, just set a age group record for the 50K. We hear from Travis, “Shaved 10 minutes of the record. Former record 4:10, she ran a 4:00:26. Nina Kuscsik was there as well to cheer her on.” Kathy has amazing range, from the 1500m now up to the 50K! And Kathy told us, “I was so far out of my comfort zone....I went to the well…” I don’t believe it, that woman does whatever she wants as far as breaking national records!
Well you may not know this but Nina herself was a pocket rocket when it came to the Ultras… that is a running discipline you will never find me at! The last time I talked to the team boss from my Swedish Club and told him I was washed up he suggested that I started running Ultras… this is probably due to the fact that he remembers how I used to run when living in Sweden, and I have nothing against doing long, long training runs, but racing Ultras is a beer beyond the six-pack as far as I am concerned. Talking Heads - Rice n Beans comeback, “I don’t understand people who still bother to sign up for NYRR when they don’t run anything as fast as they used to -- I mean what are they doing there, it must be so disappointing for them to be so slow there is no point in actually racing… what a waste of a entry fee…” My comeback related to the fact that sounded like the view of someone weighing in at over 250-lbs who used to be 130, more than anything to do with cadence of speed… Waiting for more news-views tomorrow.. What a hoot the guy is. By the way the reason we call him RicenBeans is the first time I met him he was selling gear for Chubby at the store and he had a big stain down his T Shirt of…. Well I mentioned to him at the time that on the racks were like 500-clean T shirts, but he insisted he liked it that way! Go figure. It was flipping as windy as a hurricane in a subway and somehow I had not printed the instructions on how to get out of Manhattan so we found ourselves on what appeared to be Highway 61 with the zippy cars leading us for the bridge (Kinokero did not look happy at all)-- bad move, some reversing and onto the side roads, which led into bumping into the NYRR Coogan’s Race! What a stroke of bad luck; some policewoman telling us we could not cross the road till ALL of the runners had passed - well calculating the pace, knowing the numbers, we had to make a detour back down again.. What to do, the first side I have been on the flip side.. Jesus I wish I had that kind of attention when I was running -- I remember racing in Rackajack City Iceland going like a desert torpedo trying to make the traffic lights as I knew the cars would not be stopped from the crossing direction….
So finally, finally when we get to the bridge we’ve already gone a full five miles or so (powered by starbucks)… Of course everything looks different five years on and we are cycling round the bridge end of New Jersey with no clue how to get onto this elusive Palisades road.. We swooped down this hill of all hills that defied all angles of tarmacing, and having gone way past the bottom I decided to try and re-read the instructions, to which I have a problemoso always doing…. “Stop before you reach the bottom of the hill” Damn, we had to pedal up the Grando Everesto (All cyclists in this area must know this monstrosity)… Neither of us are experienced cyclists but the Galloping Kinokero was tearing along making me look like Le Lantern Rouge candidate ’06 …. The road, when found, is great, nice and peaceful, but can you say l-o-n-g and undulating.. so when we asked one cyclist if we were finally anywhere near The Runcible Spoon (as far as I had printed the instructions as the word Food appeared next to this landmark) and he said, “Only 8-more miles.” We decided that we may have bitten off more (Muttering under my breath I was a city boy) than we could chew.. And I remembered a Starbucks not far from the route way home in Fort Lee (where Minnesota once met me) that seemed a safer alternative. I must say Fort Lee is a bit, urm suburbia-ala-blandia-inlandia… But soon enough we were zipping over the GWB (what a difference a tailwind is!) back to Manhattan with a cool long run done and plenty of calories burned. After lunch I set off to cycle home and had gone ten yards when I heard “Hey Toby” and looking up who did I see but Alexandria the Glove woman - Alex (as she is known in the save the fingers typing depo) a great runner from CPTC, who used to live in California and once came to a Nike session I was coaching in the park -- she hit the headlines of one of the glossies when somebody exposed her as the soul who walked round picking up odd gloves…. In fact the last time I saw her she was standing at 64th St with washing lines between the trees with a whole stack of odd gloves & mittens displaying for people to come and try and find their missing partners -- she is also a superdooper psychologist too, so I chatted a while with her, about the thangs ya do (absolute bagels, Achilles tendons, Dr Dan Hamner), and I also met with her boyfriend called Amon ( a name that relates to the back end of the word backgammon) who is a professional mover, “I could win the Empire Stair Run Up if the rules made you carry a fridge on your back” - with him on that one…. Then setting across the park I bumped into Pierre Le Pressure (the meanest knotty fingers in the trade, his nickname used to be The Pusher but with his dreadlocks that was getting him into all sorts of trouble - but he is a massage therapist), Anyway Pierre was with his ‘wife’ Chase, and Shona and Josiah, and they challenged me to a game of Soccer. Well I can never refuse a game, and being the undiscovered Zico of the Upper East Side I readily accepted. To psyche them up I did a few warm up jumping jacks, slipped in the mud and further pulled a pulled muscle (piece of scar tissue thinly disguised as a muscle), that in itself made the game rather hard - plus outr playing was so pathetic we were falling over in laughter, I swear I was good when I was 12. To make matters worse we then played American Football after with my team mates telling me the rules as we played, move by move, also in the mud.. Did I say the Mouth of the Grave? Well in Pierre’s words, “Now I ‘ve beaten you, let me really beat you up” So I went back to his house for a massage on the floor with him literally walking over my muscles. “Let me tell you what you need to work on..” he said so many times that I told him, “Give me the short version, what don’t I have to work on?” Luckily we had made a pit stop at the Silver Moon Bakery where I told the lady we wanted a sample of everything….. So we had a nice cake-a-recovery with expresso…
So Club Night continued…. I got my hair chopped by Rodney (Aka OzRod) who owns Cutler Salons on 57th, and also the massive studio in Soho… A long time friend OzRod gives forty lecture as month now but can always be found pounding the roads of CP very early in the mornings- one of the many amazing people who dart around the park… anyway interesting enough Rice n Beans was moaning my hair looked a mess, and ordinarily I would keep quiet (and have done for his previous tirade of comments), but I mean… I said to Rice n Beans, “Look at your own head!” Those who know Rice n Beans will know exactly what I mean the cheeky bugger -I was like can I take a picture of your head to put on the web site please?” - Then we found a pic of him in the lurking in the background of one of the photo‘s! Funnily enough OzRod's final words as I left him were, "If anyone says your hair looks bad, then you can blame it on me!" I'll send Rice n Beans to him via the post. World Cross Country Team:

HR>This is bizarre (2) -- these Kenyans, switch country (fair enough), still live in Kenya (wise move), and now are running in the Military teams for Qatar? I mean do you get a rank in the army with your passport?? Anyway one of the fun parts about club night is seeing people in their ‘other wear‘ instead of running clothes. We get so used to seeing people dressed as runners that to see them in dress wear looks very odd. I had to get a photo of myself in a suit just because The Simba did not believe I am capable of wearing a suit, and thinks me the most scruffily dressed person in the world, “You always look a mess” -- hm, come to think of it quite a few others too.. And I mean now the dress up Wall St Rat Race has been canned…. As Al Green sing, “I was never told about the sorrow…” A fuller report later…. But twas a fun night.
Anyway on the picture you can see Doris looking behind to see if any cars were coming (this is the road that links Iten to the High Altitude Training Camp) as they always came really close by to Simeret for some unbeknown reason -- we thought it was perhaps her redbull head wrap.
With the Dutch it seems like a foreign colony here. Speaking of Dutch I have recruited them as my backing band for the streets of Eldoret today where we will play our concert much to the distain of the Simba. Simeret wants to come and dance, I‘ll believe that when it happens… Well we played a renditions of first verses to a variety of songs and got a good crowd ,but did not make too much money this time -- less than $1:50! (mind you that was contributions from about 15-people but less than the taxi fare into Eldoret from Iten)… Well in all truth we did not deserve too much as the words were a bit ropey-- nevertheless we had fun. EldoLise walked by as we played but strangely did not come and sing, kept on walking by muttering something about being busy with jobs to do, Phyllis Keino also drove by smiling -- Jeroen was on the Drums, Timo was clapping his hands, Marcel wandered off into the crowd, and Dennis was the chief photographer; as usual we did manage to stop the traffic… He is Stephen Cherono’s training partner and rabbit in the big races. And we also bumped into Caroline Kiptoo who had won the women’s race at Kabarnet, “Now I prepare for world xc selection” (after placing third at the shoe race she then went to Morocco and won a Half in 70:01, but maybe will run this weekend for the World XC selection race). He continues, “Half Mara:

(A good double from Flo of Sparet, Stockholm’s best running club). The Swedish press will of course be centered around the 3x world champion Stefan Holm, and the 2x champ Kajsa, but I think the middle/long distance runners in Sweden do a fantastic job considering the inclement weather they have to battle for a large portion of the year… on that note the last elite Swede to be invited to run the NYC Marathon (last year) is doing well training on her cross-country skis!! Go Lena! (And a special message to her coach Richard, try to pick up my guitar for me please!)
We were looking for crocodiles in the river, we saw none.
Jurg Witz came by also -- the man who wrote the Tergat book that came out last year. By the time we got back to Iten it was mid afternoon so we stopped at the Amani Cafe for lunch, and who was there but Brother Colm stopping in for a coffee. 12km senior men

SWEDEN win the Ice Hockey -- not the only medal worth winning in the Olympics, but a Key one - Heja Sverige!! What’s more two of my fav players were in the team (same as the ‘94 squad) AND they beat the biggest rivals, and usually the ‘thorn’ Finland. Sweden have always been 1,000 times better at Ice Hockey than the Finns, but often in a big competition ‘if’ there was an upset it would be Finland somehow toppling the Swedes - Not yesterday! Bumped in Herb the Verb on the street, just before I met Shiney.. I had been down to Manny’s Guitar shop to get my bridge pins (made of Ivory no less). So I am locking up my bike to the pole outside the store door and just as I wiggle out the key (from a difficuly lock I might add) a camera man says, “You’ve got to move it, we’re filming.” and at that very moment I guy walks up to the camera man and says, “Hi, I won the gold medal at the Half Pipe…” to which the camera man says not yet, not yet, we have to move the bike… I’m like can you say permits? Before disappearing into the store -- now if he had asked me when I first arrived, instead of after I’d been fiddling and fumbling, but… besides I was in and out faster than a fox through a farmer’s yard. Besides my celebrity doings were with the famous OzRod of the Rodney Cutler Saloons on 57th St (East) & Broadway, Soho. We finally hooked up and I was super impressed to hear that Ozrod has just completed an Ironman in 10:30, and he has a marathon coming in six weeks, yikes! I have not got the scoop on the Grammy’s yet, but I did tell him every paper I pick up these days, or magazine, seems to have something about him in it - what a star! And speaking Stripes I was out with Rapido the other night and we got a free drink (for being good customers) and I did not drink it; getting old, gosh that is a first.. Perhaps it was seeing the drunk girl who got thrown out of the bar, that was after she fell flat on her face, then later was throwing abuse at the bar staff… Meanwhile
Down in Puerto Rico, “Tulu cancelled but Adere is here..” Starbucks reports on the race for Sunday, with the expected weather to be 82-degrees! What an indoor team - four athletes -
Tarkio & Kenenisa Bekele and Tirunesh Dibaba, and Meseret Defar for the 11th IAAF World Indoor Championships, Moscow, Russia, 10 – 12 March.. Interestingly enough Kenny said, when here for Millrose, that he did not want to do the indoor as he felt it would interfere with his chances to double at the world cross.. So there you go. Notice how Starbucks is guarding his special gourd… “Better shoot the camera quick, because this is the first and last time I am ever going to serve you food!” said the Simba on Xmas Day.

Kenya continued The wife, Jane Kemboi a former runner from Singore who ran the 1500, when awake. Amazingly enough I have a picture from her ten years ago when she was at the Brother Colm training camp, and a friend of hers used to send me letters.. Small world! We ate breakfast at the Sportsman in Kabarnet which is owned by Paul Tergat (check out the posters on the wall if you visit the place for clues), then arriving at the race field I met Paul who had just arrived from a two week trip to Angola. He was looking every bit a superstar and driving in his Landcruiser. Former American world 100m champion Torri Edwards made her return after serving 15 months of a two-year drugs ban and finished fourth.
Meanwhile on the third day of the Russian Indoors, Yelena Soboleva has set a women's World Indoor 1500m record with a time of 3:58.28! 2. Yulia Chizhenko 4:01.26 #3. Yelena Kanaris 4:03.53 of Urban Athletics. The Simba is going to start her ‘hard’ training on Sunday with a two hour easy long run through the forest. Her goal is a very fast 10k at the end of February. The world‘s best 10k falls on Starbuck‘s birthday, and he has asked for a world record. I have now been in Kenya for two weeks and only signed on to the internet once(!) I bought 500-minutes imagining that I would get to Eldoret once every few days to sign on, but it has not been the case; even when in Eldoret I have not made it to the café with the connections. It is good business here, and Moses Tanui wants to expand his sports complex to being an internet café. You would not believe the state of the computers they use for such locations -- talk about bring back the Atari! As usual it was a who’s who -- It was a great honor to sit and chat with John Ngugi, Joshua Chelangi was there - 2:07 who won at Machakos the year I raced there, ten years ago to this day-New year‘s Eve(!!), Paul Koech also from the same camp we had -- great to see him. Anyway back to the race Sammy Kipketer was second in the 12km-- was a very tough & fast race, Augustine Choge and Isaac Songok went 1-2 in the 4k (both are on the morning runs). 02/05 Here’s the team--
Women: Choge and Limo in the 5 is a great team, as is the steeplechase squad - the last two steeplechase Olympic Champs.
Females:
1.Hellen Kimutai (Kenya) 1:15.03
2. Lyubov Denisova (Russia) 1:15.19. -- a fabulous time for Titus as this course is a monster! A good 800m too - Yuriy Borzakovskiy 81 RUS 1.46,99 2 Wilfrid Bungei 80 KEN 1.47,82 3 Belal Mansoor Ali 88 BRU 1.49,01 and the crowd fave --
1 Kajsa Bergqvist 76 SWE 1.98 winning the high jump! In the men’s 1000 another stunning Nordic result from one of the two Icelandic Brothers!

Meanwhile somewhere in Kenya, training on the ‘field of dreams’ track at Kamaring La Simba, Hilda, Silvia and Mrs. Zimbabwe under the auspicious eye of the legendary Starbucks. Lagat & Bekele, getting ready for the race today!
Millrose-- Bernard Lagat, “I’m glad he visited us first before I visit him…“ eluding to Bekele’s drop down in distance, and Lagat’s eventual move up…. Coming tonight - The Clash! The first time ever three Olympian medalists are in the Wannamaker Mile together.
Bekele was wearing a coat despite being indoors in a warm hotel, Lauren Williams wants nothing less than a PR today.
Bekele says that his hardest feat is the XC doubles, racing twice in 24-hrs, he also said he is completely free of the Achilles injury that caused him to DNS at last week’s indoor meet in Germany.. His PR for 800 is 1:51, and wants to run as fast as possible tomorrow. He will not be running the indoor world’s. Bernard Lagat said that the indoor track suited short runners, so it would be good for him and Bekele, he envisions the first 800m to be run in 1:55... Lagat will stay with the 1500 for the next couple of years

The garden at St Patrick’s Jumping jack at the Iten Location Field. To the trial on the hill…. The Urblazers were out last night fighting the gradient with no complaints --
Michelle (received tonnes of compliments from the other runners saying she looked the Biz), Jaime - first session and she rocked, Robin of the Hood, Susan back after a long while - did great, Denise in the army now, Queen of the Harriers - one eye on the workout, and one eye off it,
Sir Alec unfortunately tweaked his foot en route to a storming work out, Dan looking smooth, Rich getting it done, Dave the Trackman pushing his achilles, Rick & The Commander pushing the wall, Doug - welcome, Chucky following off his promising half, Anil & Luis making an appearance to make some comments, and observations… “All unquotable, all off the record…,” told Anil before the tongue spoke…. Something about being banned from bars and blouses, or something like that -- I was up the hill from the words… After which I passed the Post Office to say hi and post some letters before getting back to the camp where I had just missed a man getting arrested (the scandal!) Three police came to take a gym instructor, who was coming for an interview at Starbucks gym and had worked at Moses Tanui’s gym, to the cells as he had taken about $450 of Tanui’s money to the bank to deposit but failed to deposit the funds.. Drama in Iten. But back to Doris: She is considering joining the Armed Forces as she wants a stable career here which will mean six months of non-running (they have to do boot camp with no running time allowed)-- we are hoping she chooses to focus on running instead as she is currently one of the top Kenyan female xc runners. However they will let her run up until the Kenyan trials…. A couple of Lornah’s little nieces are also at the camp -- they hate running! (However they did do the health walk and ran!). At the camp you easily forget the rest of the world exists; something happens everyday, but in its own little way -- you become insular to the surroundings. The amount of Dutch runners increased with the arrival of two more and it is a lesson of the reflection to see the different attitudes, minds and conjectures of the countries. Anyway it so happened that when we were running we passed a few other runners and there was this one Kenyan guy who zipped on & hung with us for a while; I thought nothing about it. Later that day I went to visit the St Patrick‘s HS. It was eerie to re-enter the house where I used to live, walk the paths where I had ran daily, and look about the place trying to recall days gone by. Of course I happened to bump into a runner there who was washing his shoes in a basin of water - the winner of the last Kenyan Athletics Federation XC at Kisii -- Mangata. He was also 4th I think in the World XC. So he asked me who I was, and then asked if I was a runner, I told him I was now just a business man but used to live in the house opposite his ten years ago, he again asked if I competed anyway more, and I said that no I was just a fun runner… “Ah, you were not a fun runner this morning -- you were serious business man.” Ah, so it was him… It is kind of embarrassing to call yourself a runner in these parts… This morning Brother Colm dropped by with two athletes to stay at the camp Viola (African Champ at 5000) and Nancy Kemboi #3 in something spectacular (See what I mean about saying you are a business man instead of a runner?) Then heard some news about Magdalene Chemjor-- Apparently the Jam-jar now has a kid and is living near Nakuru but still has land at the Iten Viewpoint. Anyway time to get moving as this morning I am supposed to be visiting Godfrey Kiprotich at the camp with Evans Rutto, Cherigat (the preacher), and Paul Koech (who has gone back to Nakuru). The camp of Dieter Hogan. Then this afternoon I am going to the Kip Keino Orphanage which is now really the Phyllis Orphanage. I have decided to add some prize money to the race for the oldest and youngest competitors to try to attract some grandma’s to the starting line -- Lornah has promised that her Mum will run, Kool! And the good news is Starbucks is still training each day at the gym - but wow, what a great complex this place is now for training! Doing business with Moses Kiptanui, and a timely reminder on Monday I will be boxing up and sending off to his camp for Shoe4Africa’s drive for the Kiptanui Camp. Moses was a legend of the track in the 90's - three world championship titles, wr's at 3000, 3000 ST, and the 5000 - virtually unbeatable at the steeplechase from 91-97 unless at the Olympics (silver). Back at the camp I heard that Martin Ojuku (who used to live in Sweden and claimed many a course record) and was a friend when I was there is now having problems with drink -- he has lost all his possessions and the wife has ran off, very sad to hear, but apparently the younger brother is an amazing talent. And that, washed down with red wine was xmas, as Starbucks said, “We celebrate ten years of friendship, wow!” -- it has been a long time; that I knew both Starbucks and Simba individually a decade ago, how time flies…. starbucks met Simba in ’97 but that’s another story! Strange to think in 1990 when I decided to start running I had not a pot of glue what would happen with my life, how it would change, how I would travel, and what I would do… but one of the finer things is the friendships I have made through running - Starbucks, as they say in Sweden, is Toppen! After eating some chapatti’s I went to the cooking hut with Hilda to make Ugali for the family. I had a big wooden spoon at least two foot long and cooked over the open fire -- it was very hot and smoky, but super fun. Then we sat and talked with the family about all kinds of things -- the little settlement is called Chebisos (if I remember correctly). For the drive home we brought a little sister (caroline) who is going to look after the baby of Silvia (Hilda’s sister). For those of you who don‘t know too much about Hilda she is verging on being ‘the‘ next Lornah -- last year she was #2 in the world at 4-miles with a sub 20-minute clocking! Upon reaching Iten I met Luc who was going out for an evening jog -- I decided to join him and we went the sawmill route (where Christopher Cheboiboch lives). In a true Kenyan fashion (as Brother Luc is nearly a Kenyan) he says, “Shall we push a little on the uphills?” Twas a good run finishing a good day as we ran with the setting sun on roads where your footfall was soft and the shadows of the runners on the road were are only company… The man who is winning everything in Kenya right now, from Mt. Elgon (like Doris & Edith Masai)…. Watch the world’s this year…. Leading the way Caroline Kiptoo, who is in the news today winning the Marrakech Half Marathon in a snappy 1:10:01... She finished #3 in the Shoe4Africa 10k. Today opening an account for Shoe4Africa at the local bank we discover that for a small business you get free checking, but for a Not for profit you pay for checking! Unless you have a balance of over $7500. I keep on forgetting that you neeed ID for everything in America, like opening bank accounts… and here is the new logo:
Asics launch the flagship -- The Kinsei. Currently on the foot of the Chubby Boss; Available now from Urban. What a shoe! It has swept past the flagship models from the other companies with, and we quote from the tester, “Excellent smooth ride, that eliminated all my knee and back pains on each stride and is light enough to feel responsive despite being a fully-loaded model -- We suggest you go and try the Kinsei at Urban Athletics on 1291 madison! Riding back to Iten we had the good fortune to bump into the Israeli girl who was leaving the camp so we could say goodbye before she went home, then I went for an evening jog. As luck would have it the old injuries have come back making running a challenge -- maybe due to a run I did a day ago.. Anyway so I am running through the bush when straight ahead is a group of boys dressed up in sacks with painted faces and bows n arrows -- I immediately recognized the group to be the pack that are going through the circumcision rituals. So I continued to run and they chased after me growling and trying to make noise, so I am thinking ‘whatever next! They ran past me and stopped in my path and raised their bows and arrows… Well back in 2002 when Starbucks and The Man From Amsterdam (Michel DeBoer) were out they got shot at by these young men who are learning the ways of being a tribal warrior -- so I say, “Go shoot me, be a hero!” I was pissed off that I had to stop my run. They looked at me and continued to make these noises waving their bows in the air, so I ran on with my hide intact-- well that’s Kenya. In the evening we had a party dinner at the camp which was very nice. Lornah folded all the napkins into special designs, and we had special xmas foods. Starbucks went to the gym to work off all the fats he‘d eaten at Moses‘ house earlier -- he‘s on a mission. We had a big lunch in the garden, the sun beating down like a blacksmith’s hammer, The Simba hunting for a xmassy CD to play in the garden (“Let it snow?”), and lots of food. Then following lunch we went to visit Sylvia at her house. Silvia lives with her husband close to St Patrick’s, and we insisted that Brother Luc came along too. After sitting for a while looking at photos and talking with the family I went on my Christmas Mission -- I wanted to knock on the door of at least 20-houses and give xmas greetings. I took Brother Luc along but he got a touch shy at the very first house so I soldiered on with a Kenyan guy instead -- he was very happy as he got to know the entire neighborhood by the end of the day (“Imagine I live here every day and have never met any of these people at all.”) I was very lucky as I met people from the Samburu Every single family was really welcoming and happy, it was as I had expected but quite different from some Western countries -- for instance in Sweden when I moved into an apartment in Stockholm I baked some cookies and went to greet everyone in the apartment building and I can tell you people were not very friendly yet here in Kenya everyone was super-welcoming and insisting that you come back again… I had one failure -- I was going to get some of the special Kenyan ’sleeping milk’ Maziwa Lala from Joyce, but time ran out. So why Sleepy Sylvia? Well we were doing hill repeats (Hilda Sunshine, Sylvia, and I) and Hilda suggested that Sylvia led one repeat as she was hanging behind Hilda. So Hilda says ‘Go‘ and it was the shortest repeat of only 10-seconds, and Sylvia set off at the speed one might for an Ultra 50-miler…. I guess it was one of those moments that you had to be there for, and have the tiredness of 50-mins uphill running already in your head…
Prisca Jepletting took the senior women's 8 km race running 28:49.1 ahead of Edna Kiplagat (#$ in the Shoe race) who was timed at 29:01.3

The last time these two were so close was coming down Boylston in the year 2000 when with 300m to go Moses was leading, Elijah clawed back and took the win in the last 50-meters.
Out strolling on a Sunday afternoon with Kenya’s next generation of the Moving Feet.
Speaking Me(a)t I met Salad Girl at the Supit yesterday.. She was perusing the pita breads…”I am waiting…” So we asked him; what are we to do, when will the right order come and when will the right sizes and colors come? Well the problem was he now had no money, or claimed so. We asked him for any compromise, any bargaining, but he just sat their looking dumb. So nothing else to do but call the Police and threaten to throw him in jail. The C.I.D. arrived and took the guy to the cells, he had to call his Mother to bail him out, and with the Police on our side we now have a deal that he will now pay back a portion of the money in February.. Meanwhile we went to a coffee shop called Friends on the High Street, I was going to check my email again, but coffee won the day. Next it was to a Colonnial House built in 1952 that houses a restaurant, Gym and offices the great Moses Tanui. For the memory I stayed with Moses back in 1996 and trained with him before he won the 100th Boston. Also present was Leah, the wife of Moses who would bring me sweet ginger tea when I limped home after the two hour long runs that finished at 500-mph. And Lucas Sang was there - probably the most reliable pace maker of the 1990’s for the 800m -- he was Mr. Split Second Sang. And last but not least was Elijah Lagat who reduced all the weight to run 2:07 in Berlin and also win Boston 2000 -- against Moses in a sprint with Gezhenge finishing second. #88 is Samson Barmao, who won,he also was the victor at the Nairobi Standard Charter, watch out for him at Rotterdam.
In a bizarre double Sonia O'Sullivan is to get Australian nationality in the hope of competing in the Commonwealth Games with hopes to compete for Ireland in this year's European Championships! Theoretically if this happened we could see Lornah Kiplagat in the Commonwealth Games for Kenya and the Euro’s for Holland.. Posing the question would we get a Shaheen in the Arabic Games, and Stephen Cherono in the Commonwealth? Kenya - Continued: Then we drove to Moses Kiptanui’s farm, which happens to be next door to Paul Ereng’s farm (remember him? He won the Olympic 800 in 88) before we ran into Paul Biwott, “I had bad luck, I was only #7 at the world Marathon this year in Helsinki, sorry…” (so many Kenyans are really humble, and seem to think that anything less than a medal is a failure!) He is running Paris in April, and will begin the training in January by doing long progressive runs -- he had some interesting ideas on training (Am picking everyone‘s brains here as one could guess). I went to his house to greet the family before we drove off. I was looking out for Joseph Chebet (who asked me to come to this district many times) but could not find him, these days he is joining the tribe of time spent sitting at the bar stool unfortunately. Back to Iten I bumped into Brother Colm again and we went to the gym at the HATC with Songok and Choge, Japheth the coach (now) and others to watch some ‘weight’ instruction given by an Australian Coach.
Kenya was not all fun and games, here I am working hard collecting fire wood when visiting The Simba‘s Mother -- of course I took the troops with me, but they got scared in the forest…. Isaac Songok, mentioned below….
In the mailbag… “I am a fan of your blog. Do you still grow a little plot of grass and trim it with scissors instead of a plant in your apartment?” Tom from 93rd… I do have plans to resurrect my little Manhattan garden -- I have all the flags ready for flying on the national days.. As for other plants, hm, not even a cactus -- that says it all huh. One of the nice things about going back to Kenya was seeing old friends -- I used to visit Sally a century ago when she was at Singore Girl’s High School. My tip for the London Marathon victory this year - see below. “We have never had a Golden League (for marathons) before…” Paul Tergat. Willie Kemei is very ill right now, Sammy Langat the 800m runner is now dead, Joseph Tengelai has fallen on hard times -- he built a big house in the bush that took all his monies, Japheth Kimutai has decided to retire, “I‘m getting old and tired“ -- I met him on the location field with Brother Colm watching the runners doing Boot Camp and strides. James Songok ran from the army got brought back, ran again and died in the village-- he used to be a xc star in the mid nineties, William Koech left the army, became broke, and is now re-enlisted. William Mutwol left the army last year is doing well, Joseph Keino lives with him and is drinking a lot of the local brew, as is Vincent Malakwen, as is Benson Koech who was last seen in his slippers walking around Moiben drunk. Sammy Lelei is opening a big school and has lots of success with business. Likewise in farming for Lucas Sang-. Yobes O. is coaching. Chris Cheboiboch has opened a private school a few kilometers from Iten. Christopher Kosgei has lost it and drinking too much of the local brew. Andrew Kiprono is barefoot wandering the streets looking for shillings and has drunk too much, he barely remembers that he was once one of the best road racers in the world. Nixon Kiprotich lost his mind, received some therapy, and is now working on the pipeline and is close to penniless. William Tanui went to Qatar as a coach. Phew, a whirlwind catch up… I had a meeting with a government official who is going to be the Shoe4Africa AIDS representative for me in Kenya. I have commissioned him to come to the race with leaflets to hand out, the next step is to get them printed into the Keiyo language. He will travel to all races in Kenya and hand out info -- tomorrow I am going to look at his offices and visit the local hospital.. Ah there are some memories; I had to go there back in 95 with a foot wound that had turned skeptic and seeing the conditions and lack of cleanliness I discharged myself-- they had two wards, one for men and one for women. Everyone received the same medicine regardless of diseases as there was a shortage of all medicines. The T shirts for the race are terrible; the sizing, colors, and printing is all wrong-- so now I have to go into Eldoret and sort it all out. It will be hard to return 300 T shirts, Lornah’s sister apparently paid the guy without checking! What to do, what to do. At the Baringo race I was sitting in the pace car with Kemboi (the Olympic Steeplechaser Champ) and this man -- talk about expert commentary on the proceedings! Ben Limo, Kenya’s World Championship winning 5000m runner -- he is back in the news, see below! By some good fortune the local dignitaries asked for me to go over for pictures -- here’s me with Kenya’s Sports Commissioner, and his wife. The man to the extreme right of shot is the CEO of the Mombassa World XC 2007 Committee -- Mr. Isaac Kalua. To the left at the back is Martin Keino and his sister Susan.

Famous names in n2 & women’s third as fasr as marathoning is concerned. Other news 2001 World 10,000m runner Charles Kamathi is back in Spain winning at the XC’s -- most famous for the time when he was ‘put’ onto the Kenyan team at the expense of another runner and the team stayed up all night arguing with Paul Tergat as the mediator -- it cost Tergat the race the following day methinks… Kamathi is a Kikuyi and did not have so many supporters on his side, but had the Army who were the coaches at the time… Eliud Kirui was flying the Kenyan flag in Italy in the big XC there and…

"But I am happy to win at home. This gives me encouragement to attempt the nationals in what would be my last appearance in the 4km . So I am not going to Melbourne as we are needed in the cross-country even much more." Benjamin Limo,
the 5,000m world champion won the men’s 4km race Armed Forces cross country meeting at Engineers Brigade in Thika. .
Commonwealth 5000m champion, Sammy Kipketer, (11:31.2) was placed second while two-time world 4km champion, John Kibowen, came third in 11:31.5.… Kiplimo Muneria fifth in 11:37.3 -- who now runs for Qatar. Limo last won the world 4km title in 1999 in Belfast. He won bronze over the same distance in 2001 in Ostend, Belgium and 2003 in Lausanne.
Shadrack Kosgei reigned supreme in the men’s 12km after clocking 35:15.7, beating the former world silver medallist, Patrick Ivuti, to second place in 35:18.0. With Abraham Cherono (Brother to Stephen) in third hoping for World XC slots instead of Commonwealth places….
The legend, Former world 10,000m champion, Sally Barsosio, was beaten to second place in women’s 8km as Irene Kwambai ran away with victory. Naomi Mugo was third in 28:35. -- All three women run for the Army. I saw a video of the Edinburgh meet - Wow I can tell you Burka is going to win the World XC this year - soz for the Baby Faced Assassin but unless she buys a turbo it is going to happen.. Great to see Hilda come in fourth!! The men‘s race was kool to watch with Shaheen looking like a tower of pisa next to Bekele who ran so fast the final 200m you thought it was a track race. In the evening I was over in Brooklyn -- I took the L train and felt like a stranger from another planet as everyone looked like a garbage grunge fashion plate on the platform, station, and streets over there -- woolly blazer, dark colored with buttons and a scarf, some form of a hat, scruffy trousers - yep everyone, except something that was dressed head to toe in leather. I was going over to talk to the MAAM Running Team -- great, Charlotte said, “Only talk for 5-minutes!” The shortest speech I have done in a long time, but I found it harder than rambling on for hours, as I am oft inclined to do (as the Essex Running Club can attest to)… I made a blunder congratulating the hostess on the wonderful Carrot Cake -- it turned out it was flourless Clementine Cake.. Same thing right?
Congrats to Frostbite winners --

1 Susan Pearsall 40 CPTC NY 1:10:42 2 Danielle D'Angelo 44 WTC NY 1:12:00 3 Mary Wittenberg 43 NY 1:12:15 Receiving the great compliment from The great Moses Tanui when I was at Paul Tergat’s (white jacket) race as an invited guest. “You are a great friend, and a true Kenyan… even if you look a bit different from us!” Other fast women --Jamaican superstar Veronica Campbell has joined the women's 60-meter field for the 99th Millrose Games, organizers announced today. Campbell, a 2004 double Olympic gold medalist, will go up against her biggest rival, USA sprint sensation Lauryn Williams, the 2005 World Champion at 100 meters and Olympic silver medalist. Millrose should be a great meet as usual -- I am sure the Lagat Vs Bekele draw will be a big one! In the afternoon I did something I have never done in my life; I got down on my ands and knees and scrubbed the floors of the gym that would be opened the following day. The tiles were very dirty with mud and the gym is massive, it took all afternoon-- the Kenyan girls in the camp helped. Then we moved the gym equipment different points round the gym -- wow, heavy stuff, for that we borrowed some Kenyan workmen who stunk of sweat and meths, but the goodness was that they were strong -- later we did a chin-up test and everyone cleared 20 (upon seeing this I canceled stage two of the tests) Besides my next job was to decorate the gym with xmas stuff, so I climbed high up into the roof rafters and walked along the thin girders to hang tinsel and stars. I nearly killed myself when I realized I was hanging on to an exposed electrical box. Luckily I did not kill myself -- well it would have been fitting after the devil excuses for getting out of going for church -- it was a long day! The following day was the opening of the camp gym and Isaiah Kiplagat was the chief guest. Isaiah has been in charge of Kenya Athletics for donkey’s years. Also the Dutch Ambassador would be present as well as many other invited guests of honor -- in a day I went from scrubbing the floors to being a Guest, what a whirl. On that note it looks like I will get a classy field, but numbers may be small -- we have a meeting with the local federation soon to see ‘how we can get involved’ (their words, hmm). The last race in Iten had only six women with a 100-plus men! The World Junior Cross Country Champion has committed to coming, and she is a rocket. Other business; just made it to the post office to send a letter, and the post mistress is still Mrs. Koila, wife to William another former competitor. William came round in the evening with the news that he is trying to start a multi-cultural masaii center as there is scant info on the tribe and to date no(!) female runners…. Former President Daniel Arap Moi 1978-2002, Kenya’s longest serving Prez. Back to the camp for breakfast.... A small world part one -- a girl from Israel was training at the camp, so I asked her, "Do you know Amit?" "Amit, for sure! He is my coach!!" She cried. I told her I had trained with Amit one year back in the nineties at a camp in America.. so she started talking, and she says, "Four days before I left he gave me this good book to read about Kenya, he said the guy was a friend of his -- very nice.." Well you can guess the rest... but Small world number two was that there was one other non-Kenyan girl at the camp from Zimbabwe, so I asked her, "Do you know Bigboy Goromonzi, Cephas Matafi, Kingstone Maringe, and Nicholas Nyg.?" Of course they are her best friends -- so text messages come from them -- I used to live with the Zim-Zimz for the summer of '97 along with a few other Africans in a huge house in Hofors. I swear the world exists on a postage stamp. The race, being held that morning was a half marathon on a dust road -- It was a good chance to meet some other friends - Like Solomon Busendich who ran 61- at Stramilano a year or two ago, prior to that we had met up in Kenya and one could see this guy was about to 'happen'. I met Solomon also in Central Park in November -- so it was nice to hook up so soon again, he is (like many) looking for races in Europe. I also talked with Brother Colm, "The Circle has turned its full circle -- you are back!" And the coach from Kapcherop, Boniface, who was responsible for finding all the legends from that town -- Richard Chelimo, Ismael Kirui, and Moses Kiptanui to name a few-- he coached the world junior XC Champ and promised he'd send her to the shoe4africa race, 'if' I came to visit Kapcherop -- so we put that down for Wednesday. The race was won by Samson Barmao, the same man that recently won the Standard Chartered Marathon in Nairobi -- Sharon the Zim-Zim won the women's with Luc nicely pacing her. Both winners won a ticket to the Rotterdam Marathon -- strangely enough Samson already had an invite, and Sharon does not want to run a marathon yet in her career as she is an 800m runner turned road racer. After lunch Starbucks and Simba made expresso’s at the house before taking me to see their new beautiful home on the Escarpment of the Great Rift. The last time I was there it was only land -- and they showed me my place in the grounds if I come to stay there in the guest house (cool). To get there the camp has a typical Kenyan taxi car -- in the old days you could pack as many people as you wanted into these vehicles and a conductor would hang off the back shouting a price to a destination. Well the police have stopped all that, and now you must be inside the car and not have more people than there are seats. Well there are no 'white' taxi drivers (matatus) so with Pieter at the wheel I hung off the back door shouting, "Trip to Nairobi, as far as we go -- ten bob (70 is a dollar)." I got only laughs, no customers, so when we pulled over at a turn, I jumped off and pulled and pushed two people into the taxi-- they were very happy as they had a huge sack of maize and a baby to carry to the market. I don't know how happy Starbucks and Simba were, but off we went. I did not manage to get any more customers that day but we did deliver those two who told me, “Nobody will believe you are a taxi conductor in Iten!” I think I might have to sew a uniform. It is a problem to get a job in this place if you are a European. Next stop was the gym -- I challenged the entire workforce to a lifting competition saying that if I beat them they all had to join me on a run tomorrow morning-- talk about a dumb bet as believe me not all Kenyans can run and shepherding this lot would be like poking pins in the eye of a bull! Luckily the designated piece of equipment was not yet fixed up, so we had to call the contest off. Iten has grown since the last time I was there -- everyone in the Kenyan running world seems to be training here from the 800m distance (Konchellah 1:43, Letei 1:44, The Dutchies 1:43-45) to the marathon - Rutto 2:06... Quite a fast village! There is little distraction, a few cafes -- the in place being called the Amani right now, though slightly more expensive is Kerio View (where Renato Canova stays -- I met up with him the next week)… Kenya‘s first ever Women‘s Only Health Walk -- Phyllis Keino (left of shot), and Lornah‘s Mother, (#413) coming to the finish. Playing in the streets of Eldoret again. Patrick Sang asked if next time I can play outside his store to attract a crowd to his business -- I told him I would do it for a free hen, and it’s a deal.
I stayed at the Meridian Hotel in the center of Nairobi, looking at the please do not leave anything valuable such as your camera, money, anything of value in the hotel room sign made me decide to stay at the hotel in the morning and not go out before the midday engagement for the Shoe4Africa thing. The press conference was held at a mid town cafe in Nairobi, and the good news was that three television crews, one national radio, and twenty pressmen turned up for the event. The major newspapers -- The Daily Nation and The Eastern Standard sent the two famous Kenyan journalists for running - Peter Njenga and Chris M’basi. The exposure was more than good - so good that the next day that when I was at a race Gilbert Koech, & his wife Edna Kiplagat, (who had just returned from the LV Marathon) came up and said, "Hey we saw you were in Kenya by the TV."
After being in town we shot to the airport for the flight to Eldoret. Starbucks managed to find the best coffee shop in Nairobi - Dormans (highly recommended, super strong and a leaf design on the froth!)
Arriving in Iten I met Lornah, the newly crowned European Champion, and indeed Dutch Female Athlete of the Year. Immediately the conversation turned to body weight, with Luc Krotwaar, a Dutch 2:10 runner leading the scales-- Lornah was saying how in Kenya people are honest (Starbucks added, "Yes someone told me I was fat today"), The Simba added, "You don't hear that in America right?" But I had to correct her; "Hey I told you were fat that time in Puerto Rico." "Yes, and I was!"
The very next day I decided to go for a run, The Simba said, “You are going to suffer with the air (2440m).” But I knew I wouldn’t as altitude fortunately does not really effect me… So we ran starting with a large group, but soon it was The Simba and Doris (East African XC Champion last year who would become my regular training partner with Hilda for this trip) as we ran on a route called the Banana route over the dirt roads onto the tractor route. Out in the bush we met two athletes that I did not recognize, but when we had passed them Lornah told me, "Augustine Choge and Isaac Songok" (two of the biggest up and coming names trained by Brother Colm)…. Proving once again that Kenyan elites do run very easy when running slow in training…. Both would be seen a week later in a race-- rocket speed! Finishing the run Evans Rutto came past in the opposite direction - double Chicago and London winner, he lives in Iten when training. Welcome to Kenyan running (2b continued)….
Having big African withdrawal symptoms right now… NYC feels a cold place to be! As for wishing to go out and run, wow-- talk about the most extreme opposites you can think of… Waking up in Iten, Kenya -- the only noise is the cockerels starting to crow. You go out to the gate and meet up with a few world class runners, and set off in shorts and a T shirt along a soft red clay road with loads of different routes to take. Within minutes you meet ten to twenty other runners all going on a variety of speeds, and routes, should you wish for variance. The sun is now up as the pace increases, the roads lilt and the soft undersurface allows that you can not even feel the slightest pain in your body. Finishing the run, typically 45-60 minutes, you stretch in the garden and talk, a bell sounds calling for breakfast, so you quickly run off to shower before eating… and so would start every day…
“In employing the change, all participants will be staged and begin on a
single commercial street (Main Street, also known as Route 135) in two
waves of approximately 10,000 athletes in each wave. No longer will runners
wait to begin the race while lined-up on residential streets. Hundreds of
volunteers will escort runners from an expanded Athletes' Village at
Hopkinton High School to their starting corrals, preventing them from
stopping on or in front of private (residential or commercial) or public
property. Approximately half of the anticipated field of 20,000 official
entrants will begin in the first wave, and the remaining half of the field
will begin one-half hour later in the second wave.
“The starting time for the first wave of runners will be Noon, and the second
wave will begin at 12:30 p.m.
Thanks to Marc McGouran of the Gotham Track Club for shoe donations! He says the club is still alive and kicking up in Westchester.
After coaching the Flyers (Judith told me that Widmark Honey Farm has two live Bears round the back -- can‘t believe we missed them! And other animals to boot too), Thanks to Sara & Gary Heard for Shoe Donations, I found myself going to midtown to say goodbye to TGV, at Ben Benson’s Steakhouse. Sarah (his wife) was trying to persuade him to buy somewhere in NY, and I was suggesting the suite he always gets at the Trump International; why not? Sarah pointed out that swopping cars a little less often (his record is 2-days for a ford and three for a Prius, the only ever car he sold for a profit in the 46-car history), would pay for the deal… At Ben; I started with Grilled Portobello Mushrooms, with copious amounts of raisin table bread that was brill (I sent the basket back for more), then I had a broiled filet of Sole (nice and non-oily) with Mashed Potatoes (so so) and garlic with a horseradish sauce, and finished it off with coffee (deaf at night) and a slice of S&S cheesecake (also da cheeser to the Palm restaurants as well as many other places as far as here to Las Vegas) that was of course delectable! The service was top notch and timely, the décor as one expects in a mid town steak house - blag (TGV noticed that his former Boss had a nameplate at our table), and the overall impression was… Not bad at all! 123 W 52nd ST.

Derartu Tulu of Ethiopia has withdrawn from our 2006 Boston Marathon Elite Field due to a
stomach virus. Bad news for the elite field, but not perchance for the other runners of the elite wishing to win status.
On Saturday I was running up in New Paltz with Rapido, zooming round the trails that lead up to the castle, and down, and around. It was yucky weather in New York, but better up there. Then we had brunch with Kathrine Switzer, and Roger Robinson, at their home out there. We also picked up some honey jars at the Honey Farm out there -- we tasted all the different flavors before settling on a couple of flavors -- a most fun day. Arriving back in NYC the dibbley cold weather was still there, yuck!
It was cool running though as we saw absolutely no body, soul, or corpse, up there for the whole run apart from when nearing the carpark at the end of the run.... truly a wilderness run.

A couple of years to get it right….
Gashaw Melese of Ethiopia won the Paris Marathon in two hours eight minutes and three seconds, ahead of Kenyans Kiprotich Kenei and Bernard Barmasai, 2:08:51....
Bernard used to be the world record holder for the Steeplechase, and prior to that just ‘another’ runner living in Kenya. He was once helped me carry loads of boxes from one side of Iten to the other, thus when he is in the news his name always catches the eye. A couple of years ago, more actually, when his steeplechase record was taken by an EPO-athlete from Morocco, he started to think about the marathon and road races, then in 2004 committed full time to the roads by debuting at Rotterdam. He never really made the move people thought worthy of a Sub 8-min steeplechase runner.,. And was running in the mid teens…. But now, with a 2:08, he has proved the doubters wrong. Another great steeplechase runner running well right now is Philip Manyim, who won Berlin last year in 2:07.
Okay, remember the other day when I said Paul Kirui was my 2:11 tip to win Rotterdam, that he’d be a dark horse -- well he got second, not bad huh? What a 2:06 stunner, and look at Sammy long tooth still running great -- Sammy Korir KEN 02:06:38 1

On Runnersworld now till noon today - a story on Moses Tanui, and a brief chat with Fred Treseler.
We hear from Starbucks as we are suffering in near freezing weather…
“Hi, From a beach in Asia, 37 degrees C and a Starbucks within 5 minutes.. See you in Boston when the weather warms up.”
From Bill Staab of WSX,
I saw in your newsletter that you had been at the Neue Gallerie; The New York Times rates the coffee at the Cafe Sabarsky (n the Neue) as the best in New York -
I heard from George Milic, who proved a friend and a half during 2005, and now lives up in the Sticks at Riverbank, up near Van Corlandt park ways.. George asked me if I wanted to go for a run with him; that shows how out of touch we’ve been of late! Mind you when all is said and done I have now, after labor, sweat, tears, and pain, worked my way up to completing five mile runs..
"Please note that this year's events will follow a different course than in year's past, starting on Central Park's East Drive near 68th Street.
Meredith Vieira is to replace Katie Couric for the TV Today show - I met Meredith once at the end of a running race in Central Park when she was doing some interviewing… Meanwhile no news as yet if Ms. Couric will race the ING New York City Marathon this year.
Defar going for the World record at the 5k this Sunday in Carlsbad.. Which currently stands at 14:47 by The Simba. The fastest 5k of the year so far is The Simba’s 14:55 in Puerto Rico, en route to her 30:54 win in San Juan.

I saw Kathrine Switzer & Roger Robinson’s new 26.2 marathon stories book -- it is a delightful, informative, enticing trip along all the miles, taking out the bumps n blisters of the event as we know it -- a great entertaining read, simply put; Perfume!
So despite snow flutters it was a nice evening as Track Night returned to the 6th ST! Beautiful! First down was Arthur who had heard about this night whilst running one day in NYC somewhere with some person, he ran great I introduced him as Mr. Dollar (50-cents geddit? He didn’t ‘Half a…’) Ah, oh well. Then came ChuckyChina priming himself for Boston, wanted an easy workout so the first thing he did was bump up the amount of intervals everyone had to do -- we settled on 12 before Chucky added four.. Go figure! Chucky’s architect friend, Tom? Also came down -- he came once a while back. The Commander was down and in fine consistent fettle with Kwasi (doing a yoga wheel in lane eight).. I could not believe Kwazz could do a ‘crab’ but there he went and did one; good form too - much better than when he attempts to do that thing called Boot Camp (as I always say, every group has a boot camp plonker).
Laura, a FIT Alumni wants to know, “DO they have pretty outfits??” Actually we don’t, yet! Gaultier has yet to reply to my requests, though since Calvin Klein is an alma mater I might ask him to design FIT’s new fall outfits for the XC season.

Krafty Krebs was up at Rockefeller at the weekend, “only got lost a few times and the wolves (and vultures) never caught me so it has to count as a success.” The non-urban delights of Running New York.
There is urgent need to help starving millions -- Paul Tergat writing for the East African Standard about the horrible drought in Kenya.
Thanks to Devon Martin, the coach of CPTC for shoes for shoe4africa! Also to David Pullman too; same thing.
Rorredam this weekend, and Tegla -long in the tooth Loroupe returns to the line where she once set the WR. The top ranked men -- Sammy Korir (Ken) 2.04.56
Philip Manyim (Ken) 2.07.41
Jackson Koech (Ken) 2.08.02
Salim Kipsang (Ken) 2.08.04.. And just for a long shot we’ll pick Paul Kirui (Ken) 2.11.28 for the win, which would be a bit of an upset.
Happy Birthday to Kurt Le Vert today, and tomorrow I must dig up a picture of Paul Kirui...

From Bruce Deacon up in Vancouver; “Just a short note to update you on the running seminar. It was a great success and people had a super time. Lots of music and laughs. All in all we raised somewhere between $4500 and $5000 (donations still coming in) to be given to Oxfam for emergency food aid. In addition, we got a lot of media exposure and raised the profile of this horrific crisis.”
Out at St John’s for a track meet. My athlete from F.I.T., Ashanty won the 200m! Yeah har! On to the regionals…. Next stop the Olympics! It rained and it rained, and I got soaked as my 13-umbrella was as about as useful as a firecracker in a coffin.
"I am really disappointed to have to miss this year's event," Radcliffe said. "I have to accept that the injury needs a short period of total rest." Sad news for Paula R and for the sport of marathoning. Jon Brown is also out, with a foot problem too.
From Starbucks, "Was disconnected from the real World, no internet connection and no cell phone in Japan ! Thanks a lot, we are extremely happy of course and very sorry that Simba killed the (Mizuno) Dibaba Assassin.
"She said in the press conference that she has never had such a tough race. Welcome to Simba's World!

You can read about college basketball, full pages, men’s and women’s, hell they even had an article about a heckler in the baseball stands.. But what you could not read in the NY Sunday Times was the results of the World Cross Country Championships.. I mean, they even had the results of Huddersfield and Barnsley soccer teams.. Two mining towns in the north of England.. Go figure!
Some klick-Klee culture @ the Neue Galerie to see the Klee Exhibition with R. My favorite piece was a Schiele work on the second floor ,and I liked a painting called Orpheus till I got closer to it, then there was a cool picture called Red Balloon, and I like the title of ‘A confused Man’ that was painting of a man in many pieces! The Schiele sketches were great; the eyes on the paper talked to you as you walked past. A waste of space was the room that had photos of people who owned the pictures and collections. Another nice painting was the Yellow House, and some small sketches from somebody called Alfred Kubin. Anyway well worth a visit on 86th ST. I used to go to art galleries perpetually as a youth (most of the time not of my accord when in Europe being told it was ‘good for me‘ and I‘d appreciate it later, which of course I did).
Then to keep on with the Austrian theme I went to Café Mozart; not been there for a few years! The staff had all changed an d the coffee was tremendously good. You go to this place for the cakes, so I had fruit granola to start which was great with a huge variety of fruits and whole dried apricots which I thought was a great edition, instead of getting tasting splinters.. The piano player in there could have done with the request to play..’Over the hill and Far Away’ from the establishment as they plunked their way through some classics and Beatle songs that sounded like a mud pie dirge… And for dessert, from a huge wide array, I went for the Rhubarb & Strawberry Pie that first appeared in the shape of a Pecan Pie (Is my accent so hard to understand?)…The reason I stayed away from the Salieri Delight, the Moon Mountain Torte, and the usual delights was that I was buzzing like a caffeine needle in a jar of ephedrine due to swallowing a gallon and a half of Starbucks coffee, and I needed a shot of sugar like a hen needs a toothbrush. Drizzled, moist, dark, rich, decadent. These are the words off the menu! And that is to describe the coffee…
On Saturday I went for a run with Cynthia Gale.Check out her amazing jewelry that adorns museum collections all around the world, and in fact in the Met Museum that we actually ran past. She used to be a model, living in Europe, and has an amazing story to tell; plus she is an alma mater of F.I.T. where I am a coach. Desmond Tutu, Jane Fonda amongst other have her arts; pretty kool huh? Then we went to starbucks on Columbus at 76th is it? A nice place.
What do they say? Live by the sword, die by… Running with Estupendo Rápido, or should we say running to keep up with her… Another death on two legs in Central Park..but it was nice running in a near empty park with just woodpeckers and sparrows as the other movements.
Other fast women - “Deena Kastor, 67:34 (PR/AR) in Berlin 1/2. Set also 20k USA record. Race won by Edith Masai 67:15 course record. Paul Kosgei course record 59:07, quicker than Fabian R. of Spain.” thanks Urban. Evans Cheruiyot 59:29 was the runner-up. And let it be said right and now I am making my London predictions for Deena to win. I am backing off Shami winning as he has a back problem right now

We hear, “Bronx Community College will be holding its 28th Annual 10K Race and 2 mile Fitness Walk on Saturday, May 6, 2006. It’s a great way to celebrate spring and to get in shape for summer.
Call me at (718) 289-5151 or email me, carol.white@bcc.cuny.edu, if you have any questions.”
And from Heather, “I went out for an easy 8 on Wednesday night. Instead, I got a ride home in a police car (they were so nice) and a four hour stint in Mt. Sinai's
ER waiting room. I took a nasty fall. The ER doctor told me I fractured my ankle. Fortunately, he was wrong. I merely tore the ligaments in my ankle and my achilles. Life is funny, isn't it?” Our sympathies for a speedy recovery.
At the Scotland Run, a nice email from Kyomi, who was third in her age group(!) “Today, I ran the Scotland 10K race, and I rewrote my 10K PR. 40:31(6:32MM). I just want to say "THANK YOU!" again for improving my running life. Your coaching has given me 9 new Prs!” And thank You for doing the great running… Kyomi did a 3:13 in Tokyo, and we are hoping for a fab race in Berlin this fall.
Thanks to Alan Ruben, aka The Rube, for more training shoes, for Shoe4Africa! Strange that Chubby no longer has the Rube on his hit list, perhaps that is because ‘out of sight is out of mind?’

From the NYRR, “The race start time is 10:00 a.m., not 9:30 a.m. as originally scheduled. Daylight savings time starts on Sunday, so be sure to set your clock ahead one hour before you go to bed on Saturday night.” Concerning the Scotland Run!
Wanna buy cheap herbs and spices? When you buy them in my neighborhood they cost an arm and a leg,a nd a tooth, but in Kenya I was very pleased to see how cheap they were.. And now I found a cheap place in Manhattan - Chinatown! I got a bag of cinnamon for under a dollar, and a good sized bag(!)
To the Post Office today with Shoes for the Africa thang… it is my strength training humping up the hill (where james Cagney was born). Anyway I get there, stand in line, and the lady at the counter says, “You can’t send the shoes in those boxes, they’ve got print on the outside.” I pause, sigh, and try to deflate myself down to a size of a pint of pained expressions before asking, “So I have to carry the boxes all the way home just to cover up the print? I thought I was doing some good recycling these old boxes…”
Urban is his shoe4africa designed T shirt over in Portugal. Kool getting the word out.
Boston updates; * Men's Field-- Kazuo Ietani of Japan has been added to the elite field. * Women's Field
-- Elfenesh Alemu of Ethiopia has withdrawn from the field due to a knee
injury.
Out and about; twas a busy day yesterday, I was hopping from one place to ther next from pre dawn to dusk, and the wheels finally stopped at Café Europa on West 57th. It is a midtown diner and as European as a boomerang in Trafalger Square.. Mind you the Heineken did taste like.. Heineken. Not that anything was bad; not at all. The place was very suitable for a midtown meal.

The new Commonwealth Games champ is fired up;
"But I am going to train like I have never done and I will be attempting the African record, which currently stands at 1:55.39," she said. Jepkosgei said with a personal best time of 1:57.82, the trick was to train even harder and "achieve bigger targets."
It had to happen. TGV is getting rid of his 43rd car in five years…. I knew he was crackers when he traded a Porsche for a something non European.. And all along I have told him, there is only one car to get… It is the E-type.
I remember you by Donna Summer… My fave song right now for getting jobs done round the apartment… keeps you moving.
Here’s the culprit for why I got the clocks wrong yesterday! So track night -- we saw Alem shooting over to the West Side, Anil at the store looking like he has been opening the extra can of beer, Jeremy sitting out track this year, but may do some road races… R2 left work early to get there, Doug was there too, Shawn didn’t and did not get there. Kevin the Commander was in fine fettle and looking strong tugging along Kwasi who had the best quote of the night, but that quote is a ‘had to be there’ thang. He also had the best impression of road kill following the session. Denise was the first to get there, welcome back to Lissy. Trackman Dave had a great sess, and the Centuryman was chasing the pair of them down… Constanza arrived a little late but made up for it with hi-speed! Next week it is down town on 6th ST.
03/29
Oops - I had a 50% chance of getting it right (see below), "It is “spring forward, fall back”, so you move the clocks ahead 1 hour on Sat night..." from Rich H. at the NYRR, and from Rich E., "Yer Scots'll be two hours late, laddie..."
Running this morning in Central Park with Mary Wittenberg (pictured), one of the power players of the running world.
Talking the Simba - CenturyMan sends us a jpeg from the current issue of Runner’s World that has her on the front cover.
And more… Has anyone just ran one marathon? Serious Question (need help for an article).
This week the Urban Group meet in the park, but next week on the track.

Love to run? Love toi eat would be the topper - they have a fig roll special at the local supermarket right now, and I am eating my way through the darn little things breakfast, lunch, and dinner! The bad news is the reading of the nutritional values; I thought these things were supposed to be healthy!! Full of Sodium and little else… don’t give a fig? Hmm. What.

TWELVE Sierra Leone athletes were still missing yesterday as the team's remaining 10 slipped away from the Commonwealth Games village and flew out of Melbourne. That used to be the MO of Ethiopian Runners, and how Tesfaye B. started his Euro/US tours.
We hear from Sunshine Hilda, “My family are doing good. My sister (Sleepy Sylvia) is going to Italy this
week for some races.” We expect Hilda in the US later this year for more races.. Meanwhile she is zipping off to Kenya.

Speaking of which big thanks to…. From Yves-Marc,
“Stuart Alexander, Yves-Marc Courtines, Tom Little, Alan Ruben, Casey and Yumi, Stuart and Stacy 'Caldereamer' “ for donating shoes last week for Shoe4Africa! Also thanks to Laura McGeoch our first(?) Donator from Australia!
I went out the other night with the Macaroon’s.. we were walking to the restaurant in Union Square, “Hmm, lots of fire engines about…” said Chubby…. “Looks like close to our restaurant…” said Cara, and as we got closer it was! Loadsa of fire trucks blocking the streets, ladders and pipes…. So risking rhe building blowing up in our faces for food we risked life and limb (that is written in the wrong order) to see what was going on… Even with tubes, fireman, and poles we were prepared to take our table, but unfortunately the staff had fled and the place would be closed….
The following day... the next food stop was Chinatown; except from a different perspective! I did the Chinatown Soundwalk with R., starting at the Cup and Saucer on Canal. Mind you we picked another café to begin with, taking some green & lemon tea, and buying some desserts for dinner that were different looking, and yet sadly un-differing from the western world for later. I tried to pick things I thought might be ultra interesting but landed on the bland instead. The sound walk tour was very interesting, and it really takes you out of the moment, and almost into a movie set vision - like you walk into a café that looks like a large kitchen and the narrator tells you to order tea and an almond cookie, and I was standing there expecting the waitress to be a part of the guide; the cookies were not bad either.

The Al Gordon story is proving a big hit at my gym; the oldies are bewildered that a guy of nearly 105 is so active! It is our key word now, “Excessive Exercise!”
From Bethany, can anyone help?
"I am in Khartoum, Sudan right now working for the United Nations Population Fund (only a 2 week mission—I leave in 3 days). I’ve been running a bit here, though don’t know my way around well and don’t speak Arabic, so it’s been difficult.
I may be coming back to Khartoum for the summer to do some work on emergency planning and would be here for 10 weeks. Do you know any runners who live in Khartoum? If I’m here for the summer I’d definitely like to be able to run daily and it would be very helpful to speak to someone who lives here and runs here regularly. Obviously, I haven’t seen many runners, let alone female runners!
Close @ the Commonwealth… in the M800 - John got third, but he is happy, I was sure he’d win it. If the pace is steady this guy has a kick to end all others’ dreams--

“I've been a running animal since I was 14.… I did it with purity and passion and dedication and cleanness… I was a very solitary athlete….. I did all my training alone in New Hampshire…. We hear from Mary S of the NBA, “The consensus is that you're a dead ringer for Bucky Covington, one of the
contestants on American Idol. It's on Fox tonight. Have a great day, and go easy on the Starbucks!” Not familiar with the show I did a google search, but no photos of Bucky were available…. Well if he looks like me I hope he wins, then I’ll be mistaken for Bucky and get ‘recognized’ on the street for being whatever he does. The name is growing on me already.
Out in the park last night --Tom mumbling something about directions, cats, and hills, ChuckyChina getting honed in on Boston, Shawn learning to put her hands on the floor, Michelle who does not realize how good form she is in right now, Heather - She was telling me that she lives on 103rd, so I mentioned that I was thereabouts last night, and she asked where, and when I mentioned the bar she replied, “That‘s my absolute favorite place!” small world… Kwasi- I know a good place to get dumplings, Denise - gave me some ice cream, how nice is that!, We saw Kathy and Dan run by from the Flyers… TNT were on the hill, so I was shouting out all kinds of friendly encouragement to them too, and one guy asks me “how many more repeats?” mistaking me for one of their coaches, so I thought better to shout out a number, so I optimistically called out ten to go.. He seemed quite pleased, turns out they were only doing 6 to 8 in total and this poor guy had already done five- he is probably still out there now-- what to do!

Urban, who is over in Portugal eating breakfast with Lars Riedal, the 4X world discus champ, tells us he is the latest to switched over to the Elixer. Mind you he is a tried and tested Mizuno fan, so he just switched over from the Maverick.
“All I wanted was to be big, to be in show business and to travel. . . and that’s what I’ve been doing all my life.” Count Basie.
The other night the elephants were coming through Midtown up the streets to MSG for the circus here in Manhattan, I was going to go, but it is so flipping cold! 25-degrees fareinheit! To make me feel better Starbucks told me it is 25-Celsius in Iten today, hmm.
I like the ten dollar bill, the new one, it looks like it has been dropped in a tea bag!
We hear that the WTC athlete, and former Ethiopian National Team member Atalelech and her husband Fitsum have a child -- Nathaniel! Congrats! Atalelech was a great 5k runner on the local circuit in the spring of last year, before fading off, for obvious reasons. No doubt she will be back on the roads shortly.. In the mean time her compatriot and teammate Alemtsehay Misganaw seems to be holding the fort nicely.
An event worth checking out next week in NYC - Choco Gobbling Wednesday: Chocolate Tasting! (3/29)
“Prepare your sweet tooth for the best chocolate you'll ever taste!
Where: The Irish Rogue - Upstairs Lounge (City Search)
356 W44th St between 8th & 9th ave
866-322-6102, the 29th @ 8:00 pm… The organizers advice, “Please eat dinner before coming to this event! If you arrive hungry, the caffeine and theobomine in the dark chocolate will simply make you more jumpy and irritable than usual.” At $30 on the door, that is some expensive chocolate.
Reminds me of Larry Yee, and whatever happened to him? He used to work in the UATH Downtown store, and was ‘infamous’ for running sans a shirt in all the races.. Anyway Larry moved on, went into finance, moved quickly out, then got as job with Godiva and would arrive at the track with bags and bags of ‘damaged’ goods, (like a box that had one smushed or something). So for an entire summer we ate gallons and gallons of chocolates -- perhaps that explains why I was so jumpy and irritable…. Anyway Larry, then he got a job collecting lottery money up in one of the roughest areas up in the Bronx, he moved out of that, then he was working for Puma when I last heard..
According to Tim Zagat, in the 2006 Zagat guide surveys, 49% of New Yorkers named bad service as their primary complaint.
Kenya Continued:
There is to be a Cross Country race this weekend in Eldoret. Borther Colm is waiting to see whether it will be held at the Islam Center as it was last year, “If so my runners are not going. Last year Songok injured himself there, it is a terrible course.” Brother Colm currently has two of the best Kenyan short distance runners for cross country - Songok, and Augustine Choge. For Choge Colm is using the Cross country season just to build up the strength as his main aim is the Commonwealth Games that will be held in March; that is the focus for Choge. However, pending qualification he will also run int eh cross country championships, as will Songok. It is a tough time for Kenya with three major comps up ahead on Indoor, Grass, and track surfaces.. And the selection issues.. But something tells me Kenya is coming back to the fore of distance running; Let’s hope so, as they need momentum now as the press are hammering them for ‘poor performances’.
Choge, post date: He won the Commonwealth Games 5000m in an outstanding 12:56.
Great email from Shon Gables, made me laugh…
“Inside Man: Ever wonder what it's like to walk the famed "Red Carpet"? Well, I got an "inside" view Monday night, and try your best not to laugh, as I think I ate more humble pie in one night, than I've eaten in 3 months.

The big fave shoe right now - MIZUNO ELIXER. The latest to be totally hooked is Denise, who is new to Mizuno, but never going back.

Coming to the Armory next year, in the Spring (Just thinking of spring now), the first time since 1951 that the track will be hosting the Ivy League Championships.
“Iten is celebrating!” From Starbucks talking about Choge’s win in the 5000m CG. And what are the people reading in the Nation’s top newspaper? “Today a full page full color story on Simba in the Nation!”
A cause to support, and join in with; The 2nd annual obesity walk in Brooklyn's beautiful Prospect Park. The fun begins at 8am, Saturday, March 25. Be there!
More from LA Marathon -- in #6 Tatiana Pozdnyakova, 51, UKR 2:35:46 7,000 and of Warren St #8. Christine Lundy, 35, USA 2:43:14 Meanwhile over in New Bedford, two WTC athletes won --
New Bedford results. from Bob Sweeney, "Alene Reta had a nice double this
weekend winning NB 1/2 along with Holyoke 10k the day before. Alemtsehay was
2nd at both. Kassahun was 10 secs. back of Alene at NB.
Lyrical prize of the day from Madonna’s latest album, “I don’t like cities but I like New York, other places make me fee l like a dork,” Heading for a nobel literature prize no doubt.
From Boston, “Bill Rodgers climbed aboard a cherry picker this morning to unveil the
banners for the 110th Boston Marathon. The event, which traditionally
welcomes spring and unofficially kicks off marathon activities, took place
at the Boston Marathon finish line in Copley Square.”
World record holder Asafa Powell wins the 100m Gold at the Commonwealth Games.. Funny, foreigners belittle these games, the 5000m was won in 12:56! This is serious competition!
We hear from Suneet, “I just got back from a week of trekking in Cambodia which was terrific fun with lots of hiking around the temples in Angkor. And I was in Vail last month indulging my latest passion - climbing. Rock or ice, it all appeals to me. I think it brings out the secret Spiderman in me (well, he always was my favourite superhero). And surely it counts as cross-training, right?! Of course, much of my current efforts are devoted to finding plausible reasons to spend all of June in Germany or, failing that, anywhere in Europe with bars and big TVs...
Can I tempt you to a coffee next week to catch up and swap stories about life, the universe and everything?” You surely can! As long as it is not on ice.

At the Commonwealth Games Marathon: Further Shoe4Africa Success!!
Kerryn McCann (2 hours 30 minutes and 53 seconds), AUS, beat Hellen Cherono to take Gold, and Elizabeth Yelling of England was third in the women’s event.
At the gym; all the W magazines were missing, so I was forced to look at a running magazine, the Fila advert on page 38/39 is very nice, great shot.
Our on the spot satellite reporter, “Quite unusual tiny field for a marathon. The women set off
pretty slow and stayed together for a while. Liz Yelling and Kerryn McCann leading
the group. Was very pedestrian, most of the other Brits could even stay in the group.
Occasionally the Tanzanian girl wanted to pick it up again but was pulled back into
the group again. Half way they went through 1:16:xx and after that race picked up
again. McCann's plan was to pick it up in
2nd half, instructions from Nic Bideau. The Tanzanian girls and the Namibian one
faded and it was mainly down to Yelling, McCann, Cherono and Tracey Morris
a bit adrift. Yelling dropped further, McCann/Cherono duel until to the stadium,
at the end McCann edged her out, very much down to experience. Yelling made
it 3rd while Morris was closing her down fast already in 4th. Winning time 2:32ish.
News from Starbucks, “I have just come back from Eldoret, from the Kenya Seed 10 K. Caroline Kiptoo won the race and Sharon (from Zimbabwe) was 5th.
I bumped in Alexander Lebenthal the other day, she has recently sold the company Lebenthal and is on holiday till June (“One of the ‘problems’ of selling your company)…. Anyway I asked her, “What’s on your ipod?” And the answer 70’s disco. Good choice.
I went into the wine shop the other day to pick up a bottle on the way to Mike G’s house to eat some More pizza and I happened to be wearing my F.I.T. sweatshirt. The guy behind the counter asks, “Do they really have an athletics team, for real?” He fell over backwards, thought it was hilarious, I could not stop him from laughing. Is there a joke I am missing?
Easily the best Kenyan team in a while.. Can they do it? Senior men 4km:
Isaac Songok, Augustine Choge, Yusuf Biwott, Edwin Soi, Brimin Kipruto, Benjamin Limo.
In the mail from Stuart, “I am writing to thank you for your story about your dessert being plundered by your fellow diners. It came in very handy tonight at Fanelli's. Just as my beautiful chocolate mud pie with a huge mound of whipped cream arrived, I noticed with horror the envy in my dinner-mates' eyes (all of whom had turned down dessert) so I quickly told the story I read on a friend's blog and I made it clear how much I totally sympathized with him. No one dared have the tiniest bit of my wonderful dessert. In fact one diner later accused me of being the 'runner friend with the blog.' Thanks again, you are performing a terrific public service!”
I have another good strategy when this one does not work, as the dessert arrives you make a gregarious flamboyant swing of the arm and plunge five fingers into the top of the dessert, saying oops you draw one finger over the top of the cake from one end to the other and scoop up some frosting to lick!
LA MARATHON -- LIDIYA GRIGORYEVA 02:25:10 5:32 Russia 2 GETE WAMI 02:25:26 5:32 Ethiopia 3 LYUBOV DENISOVA 02:26:18 5:34 Russia --

Speaking of the marathon stars.. One coming to town on Thursday and if there any free apartments in the city Thur-Sun please let me know!

I have said it before, Medals per head: Wilfred Bungei, "Six athletes winning four medals was a good performance bearing in mind that the world championships brought together the best athletes available." Spot on!
On Sunday I will be traveling around with a guy who is 104-yrs old, I was told, “You can’t put your bike in the limo!” by Bernie, damn, he caught on! Mind boggling, to be that age is ultra-amazing!

In our cataloging the world section: In Argentina people eat fruits for the dessert, it is far more common for cakes to be eaten as a special occasion. Also the meal’s end is coffee, not coffee served with dessert as is the NYC vogue (to move you along). And it is much more common for people to go to a house to eat, leave the table, and sit in the living room to socialize; not remain at the dinner table for hours (invariably leading to over eating).. This chapter is taken from the unofficial guide to better living by Martha Tanser. But it is interesting to look at differing habits of the eating by countries instead of persons.
Last year at the Falmouth Road Race I met a cousin of Rick P, called Fred. He’ll be running Boston against Rick this year (the two are somewhat competitive), and yesterday I got an email from Fred (whom I had not heard from since Falmouth) saying that he liked the cultural aspects of this website.. Too right! And one day I’ll learn to spell too. As Willio Shakespeare would say a honorificabilitudinitatibus to hear that. Well actually the only reliable give I can give anyone on the info biz is the price of raisins by the pound.
Well I was downtown yesterday, I usually draw the line at 59th but… I went to F.I.T. to check in.. I was chatting with one of the athletes from my team there, and talking fashion (as it is a fashion school) and he told me that he is going into fragrances -- apparently the big market is in household fragrances, not the body types. He gave me a candle to smell that he has invented - smelled like play dough, but apparently it was a vanilla, nutmeg, ginger concotion.. Full marks for ginger part! A wonder drug in all shapes and guises… even if burnt. But back up to Downtown -- already all the Irish Flags are out in lieu of today‘s celebrations, or as EPO-Berk puts it (a true Dubliner), “The day I hate being Irish because every F__ foreigner dresses up in green and acts like being Irish is an excuse to be drunk.” I suppose you could say there is more to the bottle than the Cork! And speaking Cork, Sonia O‘Sullivan was an ambassador for Cork as a Euro City Capital of Culture
last year…
Due to a groin injury former world 100m champion Kim Collins will not defend his Commonwealth Games title in Melbourne. A nice chap who used to, still? Lived in Amsterdam, like all good pirates do.

TGV on top of the game over in San Diego, “In this week’s NY magazine they referenced some great Pizza at a place called Adrienne's.” For his next visit as we continue to rate all NYC’s pizza places.
Here’s a picture from Kenya continued, the Kenyan Junior women who run at the speed of lightning.
Brooklyn Half this weekend; out on Coney Island. The wazz to get there. The last time I was out at Coney Island it was with the Russian Rocket buying Russian food at the markets there, and beer, then eating in a Russian restaurant, and I remember thinking how cool to be in a place that feels totally Russian, and I don’t understand a flippin word of what is going on! The next stop is Chinatown to do the Soundwalk walking tour!
The British team for the world XC might leave some minister of sport explaining about the reasons for the lack off medals again, but it is good to see they are sending teams, well nearly, to Japan: Men's team:

12km - D Bannister (Shaftesbury Barnet), T Humphries (Cannock & Stafford), B Noad (Highgate), F Tickner (Wells City), G Thompson (Crawley).

@ the gym: Bumped into Bernie the emeritus former Chairman of the NYRR, he was pedaling for an hour like a wildman, James S who is currently trying to get out of his burgers n beer funk, and Amber who is back after three years in Colorado - she is engaged to marry Bobby D from the Reservoir Dogs, there are some names from the past -- I last saw Amber at the Californian Pizza Kitchen on East 61st -- as she pointed out, when I had short hair.
Out with Rapido the other night and she told me that a rat can run further on no water than a camel can! I would have never guessed that, it is amazing what you learn. This time there was no fighting in the bar, the customers were well behaved.
Eileen is back from London, unfortunately she did not get to see the Queen as I had suggested as a good tourist op, “The queen was out of town promoting the Commonwealth Games. I'm sure she's not happy since the Australian president mentioned that he wants Australia to become an independent state.
Meanwhile Heather, another Night Flyer, was at the Rolling Stones Radio City gig last night dancing away… they had a private benefit gig, for those invited.
I have been listening to JJ Cale of late, a great musician whose musical magnolia’s talk as loud as his soft lyrics.
Yeah anyway back to Brooklyn, hm. I will be there on the starting line handing out stickers to get into the team start fast pen; I did this community service job as part of my agreement to do some volunteering duties; a deal with myself in the ever never ending quest not to be as selfish as I once was… y’know try to a thing here or there.. Then I am going to run the race with someone that I am going to interview… this may be tough as I am not currently running right now, my last run was the couple of miles in the park with Mr. Zabar on Saturday, and since then I have not ran a yard. I don’t think I am a true runner as I surely don’t miss running; kind’ve actually fed up with the sport

We hear from Bob Glover on the progress of one of his rising stars, and NYC‘s finest young athlete, “Wow! GNY and Collegiate HS's Chris Williams is on quite a roll!!!! March 2d he received NYRR Runner of the Year Award at the Hilton for
age 15-19 (and it was a clean sweep as Christina Argueta won for the
girls). Two years ago he won the award for age 12-14. March 5th he placed 5th in the state indoor 1600 in 4:22.
We hear from Starbucks and The Simba who are enjoying the Sun in Iten, posing as film stars for the Dutch Television, and preparing to go to Japan in a couple of weeks for the World XC Champs where the Simba will attack the long course, and judging by her form in Puerto Rico, be at least a top six finisher. The course suits her.. It is a road racer’s XC course.
At the recent World Champs Britain failed to win a medal for the first time in the event's 21-year history… although giving excuses, such as the focus of the commonwealth causing athlete conflicts, it was expected - Britain is not the force it once was, period. People like Kelly Holmes, Paula Radcliffe etc (he says lost for anymore names) are not normalities..
An American Ledge - Lynn Jennings is to be, amongst others, a Special Guest at More Marathon -- coming to Central park at the close of this month.
In lieu of today’s story….“Nairobi - Kenyan athletics officials have dropped two runners from the junior squad preparing for next month's World Cross Country Championships in Japan because they are too old. Robert Ndiwa and Gideon Ngatunyi were too old to compete in the men's junior 8km category, Isaiah Kiplagat, the chairperson of Athletics Kenya, told reporters.” We bring you the pic a la jour -- the Junior men’s winner of many races last year in Kenya.. Now a senior, and ready to run in Japan - Mr Masai.
BIG thanks to Mary S of the NBA who helps us with this info on the Eddy Cyle race!

And the girl from yesterday’s picture is, (from Urban in the UK), “Kiptum Jeruto - I remember the BBC comments from Big Bren about her running style in the WCs, looked a bit like Rocky Balboa going over the bars! She is a
former World Junior XC silver medalist (1998).
Tegla Loroupe, Kenya's top marathon runner, was on Friday night named the Eve Woman of the Year 2006.
She is the first Kenyan to be awarded the prestigious George von Opel Award for her active involvement in humanitarian projects locally and abroad. No word on whether Paul Tergat is Mr Adam or not.

I had an orange fetish yesterday, could not stop eating them, as fast as I could peel them, I ate nine! Mind you they were small ones… I must have been needing some vitto C…. Talking C-ing; at the gym this guy was on the elliptical next to me, the one with the arm sticks that move with the feet part.. So he was running on the machine and the arm sticks kept on hitting him, so he hit the metal poles each time like a boxer, which of course did not make his mood any the better at all, and caused him to hit again but harder… poor machine. I can‘t imagine his hand was too happy either!
A request for further info; “March 25th (Sat, March 25 or Sun, March 26). It is a memorial race (3rd Annual?) for Eddie Coyle, from the NY Daily News…? Does anyone have any info on this race??
Kenya Continued; down at the track I got talking to this girl, who I found out won a medal at the world champs last year in Helsinki running the steeplechase, I can’t remember her name now but I think she was third.. She was running 400m repeats and said she does not really do any specifics as far as the steeplechase barriers are concerned. Anyway what ever her name is, here she is…
Well it was not Eldo Lise’s birthday, far from it, October we hear - go figure!. Over in Africa Shoe4Africa Athlete Alison Rutto is training for a race in Eldoret, I will always remember her as the runner whose running shoes were older than she was in years! Shocking. On that news Chubby called me on Friday, five boxes of shoes has just arrived from the Sacred Heart School in CT for Shoe4Africa…. Wow, how do these people find out about the program? We have to do some fund raising soon to get the Shoes over to Africa…
So I went down to the East Village/Chinatown to finally (after three years of saying “I’ll be there” have breakfast with a good friend of mine, Kwasi from Denmark. The Wednesday night group know Kwasi well as the fast guy, he has run under 50” for the 400m and also does marathons when insanity hits hit in the smacker. We went to ’Brown’ on Hester St, his choosing, and yes I did get lost trying to find the place, and asking people down there it helps it one can speak Chinese -- a talent of which that eludes me.
Moved into Design, of course moved to NYC. Then became a part time model, continued with design, now works for a company that takes info to your cellphone like a google to PC type thing, and hooks you up with other people in the same interest mode -- he is doing the design stuff, now taking acting classes -- not as trying to be the next Mel Gibson, but to continue bettering himself, and being aware of the competitiveness of NYC, “It is a great place, and full of interesting foreigners too, the standard (for foreigners) is high here (Ed’s note; of course we were not interrupting his speel at this stage) thus you want to keep on doing things, not only career wise, but as a personal thing…”
An email from Atilla, who recently PR’d at the 30000m, “That's very strange that after I ran 8:33 in 3000m, Toby emailed me that next time I could run 8:24! Couple days after that email I was talking to Mike (Barnow, the WTC coach) right before a track workout, he told me that I could run 8:24 (Not 8:23 or 8:25)!!!” Now all that remains is for Atilla to do it, which, as mentioned, I Know he will.
Germany - Former world relay champion Grit Breuer is suing track and field's ruling body for lost income during her three-year doping suspension. Should not be allowed…
“The 400-meter runner, who retired last year, is seeking $357,000 from the IAAF for lost money from competition and sponsorships. The trial starts Tuesday. Breuer is following the lead of training partner Katrin Krabbe, who was awarded $832,000 after the two Germans' suspension following a 1992 positive test for the banned substance clenbuterol.” Unbelievable, take drugs and get paid for it… reminds me of the best line in ’Love Actually’ when the worn out pop star is on a Kid’s TV program -- “Kid’s, don’t buy drugs.. Become a pop star and they give you them for free…”
Mr Millrose, Reese Hoffa the man of the shotput, wins the World Indoors with 22:11 -- this man seems unstoppable when ‘putting’ indoors!
Meseret Defar (MIZUNO) wins the World Indoor 3000, the new world record holder Shobukova hung on for second, reaching the line in 8:42.18. Chojecka (another Russian) took the bronze in 8:42.59.
The men? Bungei Wilfred KEN 1:47.15 Mulaudzi Mbulaeni RSA 1:47.16 & Borzakovskiy Yuriy RUS 1:47.38
Saturday is often my lazy day, just out of habit really, and why I always like Saturday’s. Mind you I am always up early and this past one was no exception - I went running with Eli Zabar and Michael Donovan who owns and started Donovan Data Systems.
In Central Park of course, and when we were just about to start running Patti V comes up, “Eli, you are in Oprah this month!“ A great and interesting conversation, a lot to do with aeroplanes actually, Latin America, cooking, and recipes…. we finished at Eli’s on Third Avenue, which is one of Eli’s amazing food places in Manhattan where we had breakfast; a most interesting experience, I learned loads.. On the way home I stopped off at the gym to shower, and thought I would do a quick bit on the arc trainer (and do my yoga wheel) so anyway I start but the fire alarm goes off, so I continue to exercise until someone comes along and says, “It’s for real!” So we all walk the three flights or so out of the building, nobody stressed, nobody pushing as the Fireman come bustling in and are standing on Lexington in various forms of dress - pity the people who were in the showers of the pool… and standing out there was Rima, so it was nice to catch up with her and the world she walks in as that is NYC, so many diverse people standing on the same block…. then I met Urs Webber, no web(ber) link for this man? who was finishing a 20-mile long run, A Swiss friend who I was once with in Yonkers when a woman with a sledgehammer tried to attack us in his SUV for simply asking directions back to New York City (the last time I went to Yonkers I can tell you), Urs is training for the London Marathon “I hear you go past the Queen‘s house, I can‘t wait…” All in a NYC morning.
Eldo Lise at the Bill Clinton talk, “he told everyone to get off their butts, find a passion and give back.”

I heard from ‘The Flash’ this weekend, otherwise known as the legendary Jerry Lawson! The American record holder in the marathon at 2:09 back in the Nineties
In the park - The FamBlam ran one of the best races we have seen (a man) do in a long time(!) Anthony Famiglietti 27 ADID NY 45:37 & making it two for the 27’s - Julia Stamps 27 NYAC NY 55:39, and in the ancillary 4-miler -
Patrick Dooley NY 20:11 & Kate Irvin (Also 27) NIKE CPTC NY 23:35.. And the Urban’s - After The Famblam UATH’s Brian Kirkwood 53 SCOTLAND 22:18 -- was a surreal performance #2 of the day, watch out for him in Brooklyn when we ‘hope’ he remembers to put his team code, and making a comeback Flyin Fiona Bayly 38 UATH NY 26:59... “I mean, in the last 8 months I've only managed a training run of 3.5
miles prior to today.... and that was just last week!” And huge congrats to Cruiser for winning her age group!! Christine Summerson 55 UATH NY 35:54, Danny the Dollar man was age group second in the 4-miler, And Century Man & Shawn had great runs too.
Anyway wrapping up the weekend.. I dropped by to visit my good friend Peter F. after swilling some super good caffeine and chatting about lots of stuff there was a knock on the door and he then introduced me to Mariella Franganillo, who, and we quote the web, is “Widely regarded as one of the best dancers of her generation. …” in the moves of the Tango. Mariella is setting up a charity to help artists in Buenos Aires back in her native Argentina… “I have a building for the center, but it stinks bad,“ She asked if I danced, ho ho. I can barely walk these days.. Things got worse when I was zipping along on the elliptical trainer at 230 rpm and wondered how high I could get the machine to go.. I had been going quite some time and was quite tired, so I did a big push and after 250 the machine packed in and suddenly the resistance (that I had set at medium) cut out so my bad leg (that has stopped me running) flew off the front into a space of pain and excruciating agony, I just bit my tongue to stop 1,000 words of the devil from flying out my gob….

Finally - PUMA TRAINAWAY is launched!
Anxiously awaiting to see who‘s coming in First! Christopher Cheboiboch who has the school boy Kenyan Steeplechase record, a Rock n Roll Marathon Win, and #2’s at Boston & NYC, and Ben Limo - A world Champ over the Cross Country, and on the track.
News from AOL --On your next billing date, the monthly fee on your AOL® Unlimited Use Plan will increase to $25.90. Bleeding the roots if you ask me for dial up… but no, it will be a high speed connection eventually, but no concrete news of when the improved service will be available to your area… As JJ Cale says, “Ain’t no change in the weather” but there’s always a change in the price.
We hear from Kefah, who is on his way to Mexico, who is thus going to meet up with Jackson Kipng’ok, who we hear is coming to Boston this year as the ‘Master on Fire’.
Sometimes it snows….Running is a rainy, hazy business… the rolls are like a coaster, you either go with them, or you get messed up. Running and not getting injured is like keeping your mileage under a tab and making sure you never taste the flow of adrenaline on your lips…. For my own part I had ten good years, so I can’t complain, as my maintenance factor was ropey and I always thought I’d be invincible. Anyway sad to hear from Sunshine Kibet (Aka Hilda) who is currently not training and suffering with an injury to the Achilles. We wish her a most speedy recovery -- she has a race in two weeks but is unable to train at all.
Kyomi was powering round the park yesterday to a new PR(!) for the ten miles, during a training run, meaning she is getting in great form for the MORE marathon that is coming up in two weeks, she is doing the half; she said it was so windy she was sorry that she was unable to keep even splits as we had planned, but who cares when you run that fast(!) Rick we hear from is wrestling with a long run or Brooklyn, I want him to do the former as Boston is approaching and he wants the latter as it is his birthday -- does that get bonus points? And Erin ran a 37’ 10k race this past weekend in her first ever ‘long’ distance race as a training run to try out the distance(!)…. Constanza is looking for Long run partners for the park for Boston also…
Cooper Edward Antonucci was born on the 7th to the ‘train hard, eat smart’ Manhattanite nutritionalist Lauren Wallack Antonucci who often does lecture with me, when she is not eating unhealthy snacks from her bag.. Cough cough…
Melbourne Gran Prix 200om -- It looks like Mr M. has his timing right, coming nicely into form: 1 Craig Mottram VIS 4:50.76# 2 Nick McCormick ENG 4:57.39
3 Adrian Blincoe NZL 4:59.09
4 Mohamad Farah ENG 5:06.34 -- the OZ record is now better than the Euro Record of Steve Cram, 4:51, but still a long way from Hicham’s WR of 4:44:79
The 18th Commonwealth Games run from March 15-26 could be a good distance fest for Ozland with Craig M., Benita Johnson, the 2003 World cross-country champion, and Sonia O’S on the squad.
Kenya's largest sports facility, the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani will undergo major renovation costing an estimated Sh300 million.
secured through a grant from the Chinese government. News on the old track,
"Our current floodlights take 20 minutes to light up. The new ones will come on within seconds," This probably means something to do with the motor industry that Kenya will be stuck importing Chinese motor cars for the next umpteen years…

I do believe it is Eldo Lise's birthday today, so if I am right - happy birthday to you eh (as they say up in Canada)
Today (Kenya Continued...) I hung out with Renato’s group, first at the track, then we drove to the Hill (I was going to go on my bike but the day before Cheromei was trying to stop me from passing his car on the roads by swerving the car back and forth like some crazy lunatic not understanding that a) a mountain bike can travel faster than a car on the dirt roads, and b) the dust pulled up from a car is not that much fun to swallow. So I threw my bike in the trunk of the car and off we set. It was kind’ve fun to watch the hill work, but I half wished I was running it myself. The coach Mathi was telling me stories of how he trained the national Olympic team there ten years ago, and who was lazy, and Cheromei was telling me how all the runners today were too soft as opposed to when they ran in his era (early nineties), He came from the double weekend era (to know what that entailed meant you had to try it out).

The Shoe4Africa racing singlets are arriving soon -- the design on the singlets is pretty damn spiffy, if I do say so!
Continued bad news from East Africa: “MORE than 20 million people in Africa are at risk of famine in conditions which the head of the World Food Program describes as the worst in his experience.
James Morris, the executive director of the United Nations food aid organisation, was in London to warn that millions of people in Kenya, Somalia, Eritrea, Ethiopia and Tanzania were at risk.
We hear from the Captain with his observations…
Ever wonder about those people who spend $2.00 apiece on those little bottles of Evian water? Try spelling Evian backwards: NAÏVE, and
If a pig loses its voice, is it disgruntled?
This weekend in the Park --
The Pfizer Oncology Colon Cancer Challenge on March 12 is a great opportunity for you to do your part in the fight against colon cancer. Events of three distances (4-mile and 15K runs, and a 1.7-mile walk) will accommodate any fitness level.
We hear from Zahia in Paris that Asmae Leghzaoui will make her marathon debut next month in The Paris Marathon.
On the Reservoir last night - Senor Ramon was giving lessons on coping with lactic, didn’t hear the acid version but I am sure it was useful, Kwasi is losing the pounds, he’ll be putting them back on as I am doing a breakfast with him on Friday and we’re going to Brow. ChuckyChina arrived late just to give himself a handicap of a couple of minutes, though Doug was chasing them both down. Denise arrived with her aminos and on that note I was at the store earlier and thirsty and I drank this fluid with wasp extract in it -- is that how to get a buzz? We did hear that Anil is on the jury duty right now…Anyway Michelle who continues to improve with PR and PR was zooming along, and Constanza too - on a mission from the stars, and speaking of which the Century Man turned up, against the odds -- first time this year! Shawn finally made it on time and was ready to run on the gun. R2 between the Bahamas and somewhere else made the trip up from her new UES abode…. And Anne & Charlotte made a passing appearance at Boot Camp.. As did Heather.. In an even briefer passing.. Turned cold.. Bring on the Spring!

Kenya Continued…

TGV sends this info (pertaining to the café on the bike ride)…
“So, what's so runcible about it? It isn't a technical term for a type of gear alloy. It's a made-up word coined by Edward Lear in the poem ''The Owl & the Pussy-Cat'': "They dined on mince, and slices of quince, which they ate with a runcible spoon."
The Runcible Spoon, which used to sponsor a women's cycling team and still has a framed photo of the members on its wall, has egg-and-cheese sandwiches named things like "The Lowrider."
In fact, a search for "Runcible Spoon Nyack" pulls up at least a dozen cycling Web sites with directions for bike rides that include the cafe. The Rockland Bicycling Club is based in Nyack and starts many of its rides from the cafe.
"I guess studies have shown that coffee is good for endurance athletes," said Manhattanite Steve Dwek, who sat inside on a rainy Saturday after riding 25 miles in the morning. "On some rides, you really have to concentrate because you're 6 inches behind the next guy's tire."
More from yesterday; Multi-national record holder Kathy Martin’s take on why she is running Ultra’s -- “Gary Murhkhe (first NYC Winner) said he was the second dumbest kid in class and he thinks perhaps I sat in the row behind him?”
Paula Radcliffe has pulled out of next week's Commonwealth Games in Melbourne because of a foot injury. Although she has been able to continue with her marathon preparations, Radcliffe had difficulties with her track sessions - affecting her Melbourne build-up. Gary Lough, "Paula hit a rock when out training and developed a bruised foot and it is taking a long time to settle down.
More news from Britain -- apparently the federation are yet to decide whether it is worth sending a team to the World XC Championships in the 4k. The rationale is that the event is chopped after this year, so why focus upon it. Another example of how great American Athletes have it; you cross the line you are in the team… they have not even decided on a team/individuals for the long course either! No wonder running is in a slump over there.
The power of the web -- “Don’t be too shocked” started the email, I heard from Jenny Skoglund, when I first moved to Stockholm in 1993 I moved into the apartment that her boyfriend Jonny Petren had, as he was living in his sister’s apartment as she was in Egypt belly dancing for Omar Shariff… small world, and great to hear from people who have drifted out of your life for the past 12-years! Makes me feel old….
Someone was asking about the PUMA sound walk/TrainAway project, what’s up, and Anil wanted to know what was up with Zoe Cassavetes.. Well she is happily filming her latest film,. And the launch is supposed to be soon, it was slated for October 2005, then Paris happened, but now Paris is finished, we are hoping that the New York unveiling is going to be big.. No bigger than big, it is about time. The owner of the project assures me it is going to happen…

Kenya Continued…

The Russian Rocket is off to Moscow tomorrow, “Wanna come?” Don’t tempt me
Talking Ultras I ran into Fatima from Brasil and the NYRR registration yesterday as we were both Jay-walking over Madison avenue, well my excuse was I was listening to Punky Reggae Party and had to keep to the beat.. She does those crazy-hazy long things….
Listening to the answering machine, I had a call from back home(?) “We have not heard from you in a couple of months, we were wondering what’s up?” Hey, that’s normal, they should not be wondering -- if they did hear from me that’d be something wrong. You know what they say, no news is good news. Besides the only news I have to tell is that I am now a yoga star - I can do the wheel for ten seconds and that’s all I have to boast about…
We hear from Michelle Bleakly, the winner of the Olympic Day Bid 5k, The Brooklyn, The Queens, The Bronx Half’s and a host of other races last year in Ozland, “Congrats to Rapido - well deserved!! Missed you all.. but I was in NZD to
watch my brother do his first iron man. I was so disappointed as the
weather was terrible.. gusts 120mph.. so Lake Tapou was more like a surf
beach.. they called the swim and halved the bike and the run by half.. out
on the bike he was averaging 60mph and on the was back - due to the wind -
av 12mph.. and the half marathon he ran 1.45 .. it was so windy.. the
hardest thing he has ever done.. Wasn’t much fun for spectators..” Wow, that serves me right for moaning about the weather on the bike ride on Sunday!!
02/06
Out and about on Sunday; well these days with a body that seems to be walking on the Mouth of the Grave I went for a ‘long run’ on a bicycle instead of the pins, with The Galloping Kinokero. Many moons ago I once went with Global (remember him, the photographer? He is now working with A fashion magazine that specializes on glam models with painted faces) out on the bikes to Nyack via a ride up the Palisades, seemed okay.. So off we set.
Looking beady, and there for a while was Pierre the Massage therapist (mentioned above), Pierre has been a long time member of the NYC running scene, A Volleyball Olympian, and as with the others mentioned a part of the local scene; and that’s one thing that club night really unifies -- the core members of the active part of the NYRR…. Pierre will be leaving NYC for three weeks to check out his ‘house‘ outside of Manhattan, and that sits under the sunshine of Haiti.Michael & Denise - both completed the Hawaii Marathon last year - under differing adversities - Michael is a top heavy body builder, and somehow managed to survive the hills to complete his first. When you see him in the park he looks exactly like a weightlifter does - not what you expect on a marathon starting line! He now has decided, post Hawaii, that his next focus race will be as short as it possibly can be. Denise, an Ironwoman and experienced marathoner, fell in NYC Marathon 2004 on the Verre‘ bridge. She picked herself up and despite excruciating pain pushed on for another seven miles before collapsing - she had broken her hip, she spent a couple of weeks in hospital followed by months in a wheelchair; today she has metal pins supporting her hip. She started training in the spring of 2005 again, and completed Hawaii seven moths later in a very credible 3:30.. I remember trying to get her to hop on her bad leg back in April… she had absolutely zilto strength in the left limb. Both of them are strength personal trainers at their own gym on 86th ST called Core Fitness -- if you need strength training, kick boxing, boxing, core fitness check them out at 212.327.4197

We heard from the amazing 9-time NYC Marathon winner Grete that Oslo had two feet of snow the other day; that fell on about two foot of earlier accumulations! She thinks we were nuts to run in the NYC snowstorm, and is very glad that Oslo has a fine set of treadmills. She will be visiting New York next month, and is very much looking forward to the visit.
Checking up on the welfare of my alive and kicking (biting) alarm clock!
After reading this I don’t know if I will ever go in a whirlpool again - Yucky report!
Strangely enough Part one: To make sure the correct Kenyans were selected the Kenyan Fed delayed team trials till just under one month before the World Champs this year. It is no secret that the course is dry and smooth in Japan next month.. So the Kenyan trials were held over the muddiest course possible. Where Sammy Kipketer has been dominating the domestic scene since late last year he struggled to a non-selecting 14th place.. Ben Limo and Moses Masai both just scooped sixth places after similar domineering seasons -- it does not take a rocket scientist to see that if you want the best possible team performance you should do your utmost to mimic the conditions of the big day right? Few would say this is Kenya’s best team.. Although the men’s short team is exceptional and Veronica the Junior would win on any surface, this planet or the next…

Congratulations to ~~Rapido~~ who last night was awarded the NYRR top prize for the Runner of the Year, so well deserved, here with John Samsel, and Jill - both fab runners from WTC. She was of course the overwhelming favorite -- I mean consider this, on October the second last year the USA had a team running the Half Marathon in Edmonton, and meanwhile Rapido was running faster than the entire squad in Central Park in Grete’s Half! Of course we could keep on giving examples till the crows toenails turn green, but instead we just send our congratulations! Also to the deserving Male winner, another no-brainer, Matt Downin who had an awesome season from the 5k up to the marathon distance, as Rapido had also done.
A new business in town --"Finish Line Physical Therapy, Michael Conlon, PT … As of Monday March 6th, 2006, I am open for business! Call today at 917.608.8245 to schedule an appointment."
New York drivers are the worst - Taxi’s make maneuvers that acrobats would be proud of, SUV’s cruise the store fronts and stop only when the word ‘sale’ is seen, and normal cars dart for parking spots from one side of the road to the other with scant thought of traffic or consequence.. The only thing that keeps me sane as I am scooting about nearly being knocked off every day is the thought I am pretty terrible myself, I mean here I am cursing at this car that pulls in front of me and cuts me off whilst I can’t remember the last time I signaled a turn…
Haile Gebrselassie will not target Paul Tergat's world record in next month's London Marathon. I am sure that if he wants to win he’ll have to run pretty fast to do so.. Remember our sleeper tip: Shami!
Chubbs would like it to be noted that his official time in the Snowflake was not 21:59, but 22:05.. “I mean we even started on the far side of the chip mats making it a short course, we never start over the mats. Always before them! I looked at the digits when I crossed the line and it was 21:59 but then I had the yards to run actually going under the clock, so it must be 22:05, who in the heck upgraded my time?”

The clear fav is Ethiopia, followed by Kenya, and Qatar -- depending on the form of some of the Qatari’s they could well pop for Silver. Tanzania is spread too thin, especially with the commonwealth’s coming, thus Eritrea will be the other East African Nation closing out the men’s top five teams, we think. Again, Eritrea has as good a chance as Qatar to pull a surprise -- the only lock is Ethiopia, that goes for the women too.

***********Special News about Club Night***********This year the awards are going to kick off before dinner, so the NYRR is kindly asking that you take your seats at the dinner tables and get settled before 7-pm. This is a different format from earlier years. For Urbanzz Todd will instruct you which of the three Urban tables to be seated at, so look out for him.
News from Iceland; two rising talents; Iris Anna, a 16 year old, who did 4:30 and 9:43 last year, and Björn Margeirsson 1:49,98 for the 800... Iceland’s pool talent is about the size of Staten Island, 250,000 -- they have some great runners there considering the ‘testing’ training ground… I was talking to OzRod the other day (my Grammy’s friend, had to put that bit in), and he was saying how the 17 he did in the biggest snowstorm in February goes down as one of the top ten training moments (funny I was passing him in the opposite direction on that day), and anyway I remember thinking on that run, ’wow, this is what it was like many days back in 1990 when I was starting running in Iceland - in those days I was so enthusiastic nothing could stop me, but I am sure if I moved back there I’d switch to ping-pong for the winters.
Billy Clinton speaks diet, "No matter what else you say, no matter what different studies show, you've got to consume less and burn more," Clinton said. "To do that you've got to change the culture." That‘s where the Clash came in during the Punk era in London.
Well it is March yet the weather is defo January-like, shucks.. I tune in to AOL weather, then look to Yahoo for any loopholes..
Only in New York: I was going through the park yesterday and saw a woman doing yoga on the grass, in the nippy cold! Reminded me of one time I was in Chicago and someone set up a private yoga class on the waterfront there, and it was in May - try doing your Om’s with a howling cold breeze coming off the water! It was somebody’s birthday and although the idea was nice (and perhaps it was nice for the other people) I had a terrible time as I am as stiff as a plank after being warmed up!
I met the Russian Rocket in mid town and we went for coffee, I had hazelnut and I swear that was the only taste there was… the coffee bit was non-existent…
I am breaking a promise here - “At the Snowflake, I broke 27 (26:43) and had an over 30 second PR! I actually felt pretty good, too!” Congrats to Michelle who did not want for this info to go further than the email.. But since it is such a good piece of news I thought I would mention it! Well done!! Sadly though she did not make speedwork last night, due to good reasons.. Kwasi did and I bet he wished that he was on the buffet table so much on his recent vacation to Jamaica, Kevin the Commander was feeling a dab under the weather but ran okay, with Rick chasing hard and flying on the downhills (good news as he is Boston bound), Chuckychina was doing the reeling, and The Queen of the Harriers was right on the nail with consistency, Denise was #11 with her effort, Anne & charlotte worked well, as did David P who ran a marathon four days earlier! Shawn again managed to turn up and get discombobulated.. “Though I did see Kevin who said Up and Down..” And it was an Up & Down kind of workout...

After going to Church for the first time in a score of Devil years we strolled around town before getting a vehicle to take us home for lunch, that happened to belong to Ben the brother-in-law of Josephat 2:06 Kiprono.
After lunch we went to Iten’s Viewpoint -- the guidebooks say this is the perfect spot for viewing the Rift Valley at its finest. (I think I already posted a picture of the view so I'll omit it now). If you ever go to Iten it is a must to go here and take a drink and relax. We sat on the edge of the world.

Because….The top four runners in each category at this weekend’s National Team Selection Cross-Country Trials are going to the World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, Athletics Kenya (AK) said David Okeyo on Monday. "There will be no guarantee of travel for the fifth and sixth finishers and I therefore urge all athletes to ensure they have squeezed themselves between the top four places to claim their tickets."
Anyway an email from Africa today -- Michael Rooney who was kind enough to carry a sack of shoes over to TZ for us: “The Kili marathon on saturday was incredible.
The official results were:

“I won't post my finish time for fear it might find its way onto your
website.(quite right!) I was VERY happy to have simply finished without walking breaks. with higher-than-normal temps, lack of breeze, intestinal problems, and a
330m climb from 20km to 30km. Despite higher training mileage and attempts
at "heat training" by wearing piles of clothes while treadmill training, my
finish time was still more than 45 minutes slower than my NYCM time in
November.”
“Max (our shoe4africa rep) came to my hotel and introduced me to his two sons, the Secretary of
Athletics for Zanzibar, Fabiano Joseph, and Franics Naali, and they posed
for pictures with me with Mt. Kilimanjaro in the background. I'll be sure
to send you the link once I get the pics uploaded. Thanks so much for the
opportunity to meet Mr. Iranqhe -- he is both a very nice and warm man and a
fascinating person. It was a breathtaking course in scenery and difficulty, and the people along the course were so warm and supportive. All in all an experience I'll always treasure. Having seen its impact first-hand, I truly applaud your efforts with the Shoe4Africa program, and I appreciate the opportunity to contribute. Cheers, Michael.” No, no thanks to you, and a safe trip home!
Jamaica's Usain Bolt favorite to win the Commonwealth Games 200m gold medal has pulled out -- good news for some other runner no doubt.
Talk about life passing us by; March already? Wanna life longer?
‘A study of older men in The Netherlands, known for its luscious chocolate, indicated those who ate the equivalent of one-third of a chocolate bar every day had lower blood pressure and a reduced risk of death.’ The bad flip - the test amount was a measly not worth eating 10-grams! On that note the last time I had a chocolate cake dessert at a restaurant I had had a really miniscule meal and was looking forward to the dessert for some sustenance… I was the only one to order a dessert and to my horror it arrived with multiple spoons, so I quickly said, “It’s all mine!” but no, no -- I actually ended up eating the least amount of it, and I am a fast eater -- I could not enjoy it as I was trying to wolf it down so I actually got a taste.. What is this public rights to chocolate desserts?

Tomorrow - Club Night -- who will be the NYRR runner’s of the year? Guesses on a postage stamp - the night when New York honors the top runners of the city - The best male? The best female? This website already made our opinion known at the close of last year, let’s see what the NYRR think -- all will be revealed on the night! Jelena Props' will be making an appearance.. how come I can never remember the spelling of her suranme!
The kind of race I would be interested in doing! Pancakes for Fat Tuesday.

On the way home from the Baringo race-- which included a sightseeing down in the bed of the Rift with Ben Limo & Kemboi.

Ah life in Africa, the stress, the stress! The most complicated thing of the day was choosing the soda…
Talking Africa --We hear from Bruce Deacon who will be doing his fund raiser for Kenya up in Canada for it’s current famine problems next month; very nice of him.
Scandal at the gym; somebody was smoking in the bathrooms(!) And of course, The Y style, it was a pipe that was being tugged.. And not the type that is seen in the Village, the grandpas type! There was a lot of white bearded suspicious looking towel wrapped men moving around with krafty eyes, and one cross attendant piffing and paffing… I was there burning calories after eating more fats for lunch than one is supposed to eat in an entire day; twas an ice cream lunch, luckily just the 32-oz carton and not the usual 64. Well sadly that was part one of the lunch. Anyway, back to the gym, I did a treadmill run as the weather was so cold I aborted the morning jog ‘feels like 6-degrees‘ surely is not my kind of conditions. Listening to the Gipsy Kings I was almost in the sun. Apart from the critter next tome who was banging his feet on the mat so hard it was causing my machine to rattle and hum.
If you want to try out Alem’s coaching methods and talk to him you can join him on March 04th when he is doing a free long run in Central Park.
And on the Ethiopian Theme - their Champs: 4km senior women
1. Gelete Burika ‘The Biz’ Bati (Prisons) 13:09
2. Meselech Melkamu (EEPCO) 13:20
3. Bezunesh Bekele (Ethiopian Banks) 13:23
LV Style --The first athlete, male or female, to cross the finish line at this year’s LA Marathon will receive a bonus of $100,000 in addition to the first place prize of $35,000, and a Honda Accord EX V-6! Also new to 2006 is the race is paying appearance monies.
Olympic 400m gold medallist Tonique Williams-Darling confirms she will chase Commonwealth gold in a couple of weeks.
We speculated in January that Catherine the Great Ndereba was surely going to run in Boston this year.. It now looks true… an interesting match up against Jelena Props!

Yesterday was the head-2-head with Asmae Legh. & Lornah; the first time they have met since Asmae 'defeated' Lornah in the mini. Hmm, Asmae of course served her drugs sentence, and the two met in Puerto Rico....
In the park over the weekend we met another satisfied runner who signed up with the ETHIOPIAN RUNNING method’s Addis Ababa training school here in Central Park - sign up by phoning Alem Kahsay, a former elite at 212.316.6288
At the Snowflake - Congrats to Felipe Garcia 23 UATH NY 19:55 and Ana Morales 24 NY 23:15
The overall winners… A changing of the guard, or the start of the season? Lots of differing faces….. And congrats to CPTC who won both teams, now named nike cptc, and now Blue instead of Orange. The Urbanoso’s - funnily enough, straight from the B division our small team goal was the top three placings for the men’s team, and that is what they got - third! Even without the revised results that will have the third scorer, Shiney, knocking off 45-odd points from the score! For some reason every time he runs there is never a UATH team code written next to his name - despite the fact he was signed up with 14 other athletes who all got UATH codes after their names! The women finished a great sixth… Denise running great despite being under Doctor’s orders not to run whilst taking anti-biotics, Cara starting out her season, and Joy and our featured division of the day was the men’s 45-49; The Rube held off Vinyl, and Chubbs (who swore blind he was going sub 22, which would not have been good enough anyway) snagged third. # Alan Ruben 48 CPTC NY 21:34 2 Jim Stemm 45 WS NY 21:42 3 Jerry Macari 46 UATH NY 22:02... John Samsel was steaming out in front of his division.. And for another what’s new Ginette (who was dressed in a garbage bag to keep warm) smashed her division with a 31-min run -- not bad for 73-yrs old! It was brutally cold -- I met Urzula of TeamDude and she took a photo of us and the camera lens froze(!) It was that cold. Anthony, of Mizuno, was out there, and I ended up going for breakfast with him and a team from Rockaway - nice people.

Meanwhile the Sex Pistols, are not too honored to be inductees, "Next to the sex Pistols, rock and roll and that hall of fame is a piss stain. Your museum. Urine in wine. We're not coming," the band says via a handwritten note posted on frontman Johnny Rotten's Website, thefiilthandthefury.co.uk. "Were [sic] not your monkey and so what? Fame at $25,000 if we paid for a table, or $15,000 to squeak up in the gallery, goes to a non-profit organization [sic] selling us a load of old famous." Ozzy Ozbourne, who in the past has slammed the same award, is expected to turn up to the Waldorf Astoria.

Congratulations to the Olympic 3,000m steeplechase champion, Ezekiel Kemboi, who has been named the overall Commonwealth Games team captain.
The Monsieur was in the park last night.
Over in Kenya;
More than 500 athletes are expected at the Safaricom Madoka Half Marathon to be held at Ngerenyi Farmers’ Trading Centre, Mwatate, on Saturday. Safaricom, a Kenyan verizon, is like the major sponsor of most running races over in Kenya.. But this weekend they will go head2head with Celtel who is sponsoring a race at the Keino’s farm. Also the AIMS (Association of International Marathons) has also announced it will sponsor a series of children’s races.
02/23
The NYRR are the Proud Sponsors of the USA Distance Project. This is a big step for a running organization here in NYC… and just further proof of how the Club has been backing the sport. There are a multitude of examples over the past few years, and most go unnoticed, at least 75% I would shake a twig at if guessing. Many going on right now that are ignored.
Anil is back from Torino - “Kenna caused a false start after drinking too much and shouting out at the wrong moment… saw Georgio from the Flyers up a a mountain…drank lots of beer, could’ve done with a warm pair of boots, drank lots of beer….” The Chubby Boss meanwhile was planning his attack for the Snowflake, “I have been laying low -- purposely holding back in the races, but wait till Saturday.. Put it this way I am way going under 22-minutes, and if my contemporaries think they can run with me, then they better think again -- I am going to win!” Some discussion to who was going to make up the next four scorers, Danny the Dollarman has been training well, but is unsure of the form, Felipe clagged it in the mile the last time he raced, Chris Stewart, “He’s on probation after his last performance!” Told the Dollarman. OzPaul, “Well, that is a big If..” said the Chubbs, “If Oz is on he’s on, but if not, well…” And we forgot about Shiney who could be the secret weapon. Chubbs just added, “I hope, I hope that The Rube, and Mike Trunkes will be there… but don‘t put their names in print, I don‘t want them top know I am gunning for them…”
You want someone new for the Today Show? Well there’s only one person for the job, and that is Roger Moore. Hire him.com
I have a new project; six guys with a basic out of shape theme racing against one in-shape ultra runner for 24-hrs. My team can run relay stages of any distance/time, and the ultra runner does not have to keep on moving the whole time. There is a hefty six figure financial wager. The kind of business my team is in seems like a very interesting one - they sell private jets. I love it… meanwhile my other project, resurrecting the geetar is coming along well! My gorilla glue came so I have been, with the apt use of masking tape in the place of a wood-vice, been reconstructing the shape. The tuning heads arrived and have been fitted. Now I have to get on my bike and go down to Musicians row on 48th St to get some pegs for the bridge…. I see tunes a-coming at the weekend!
Good move by the Newport 10,000 in New Jersey, near Jersey City; The prize purse jumped to $20,000, with $2,500 going to each male and female winner, and the date of the race has switched from the MINI weekend to May 13th…. This should help the race tremendously.

Urban news, “The British marathoner Mara Yamauchi set a 10k PR 31:43 last weekend in Ohme 10k Japan. She is now based in Japan.”

From George in England, “Just to show how much smaller the world is becoming, Collette Fagan finished second to fellow scottish athlete, Freya Murray, who recently moved to my home town of Sunderland. I trained with Freya twice before Christmas (or at least I started the reps at the same time and finished several seconds later).” Tis indeed!

the ING New York City Marathon Champion Jelena 'Props' signs up for the Boston Marathon!
The day after the race I was invited as a guest up to Paul Tergat’s race in Baringo, and Ezekiel Kemboi came to pick me up at 5:45-am (youch) to drive down into the hot valley and up onto the other side - his wife fell asleep on me in the car which made the journey somewhat hard.

He talked about it [drugs] every day," she said of Aquita. "We had to go to America because that's where you get HGH and all this stuff.
On Wednesday the NYRR Presents Beginning Running - The Lecture! Free to members at 76th St on the Upper East Side
Thanks to Dan for letting us know that Liverpool Lucas has become a Poppa, “Dana just gave birth to a baby boy - James "Guinness" Lucas…” Congrats!
From Collette Fagan, “This week is our national cross and I'm defending
champ so have had a lot of press work. Yesterday I had
to launch our new comm’ games kit along with our top
long jumper. We did a photo shoot at a safari park in
central scotland feeding wallablies. It was 7 degrees
and pissing rain and theses big llamas in the next
field were attacking our cars, not glamorous! (Update Collette finished a fine second place).
I saw the Ethiopian power runner Lete Berhe zip by in the park the other night, always with a big smile!
Alan Culpepper runs a 63:11 half in preps fro his Boston Marathon at The Freescale Austin event, won by Paul Bor in 62 and change.
Liliya Shobukhova set an indoor world record in the 3,000 meters at the Russian indoor championships Friday, shaving 1.29 seconds off the old mark. Coming from seemingly nowhere she beat the times set by the Olympic 5000m Champion Defar by over two seconds! The Russian clocked 8 minutes, 27.86 seconds at the Vladimir Kuts sports arena. Berhane Adere of Ethiopia, who will be running London this year, set the previous record of 8:29.15 at an international meet in Stuttgart on Feb. 3, 2002. As a bonus for setting the record Shobukhova was awarded a BMW motorcycle by the championships' sponsors. Wow, good prize… #2 Olesya Syreva RUS 8:29.00 & # 3 Olga Komyagina RUS 8:35.67
The next day in Birmingham, from our Urban reporter - Kenny B. set off in group, 4:05 first mile 4:00 second 8:05.12 just missed it.
I think he can do it any day. And Dibaba ran 8:41-ish, first k was 2:50, 2nd 3:01 and 2:50 ish again. Think she could break it any day.“
In London it is Fashion Week, and the ’place’ it trying to tout itself as the fashion capital of Europe, if not the globe… and if you ask me (which you are not) that this is the case of how long can the fumes of Carnaby Street linger? Which in itself was a Haight Ashbury rip off…. London fashion, or British, has always been copying the others but trimming with the scissors. The current trend of designers look like their best talent is to scour old vogue’s from the bygone eras and take in an inch. Thank goodness this is an international viewing affair..
Yesterday morning I am cycling along third avenue, three lanes of traffic and a taxi in the middle lane sees someone hailing him, so he cuts across the traffic at a 90-degree angle, causing a silver car to squeal and screech, a truck to nearly jack-knife and for me to make an impossible manoevre that somehow worked out that seem3ed to involve a U-turn on a dime.… so half a block down the road we are all recovered and the truck driver to leaning out his window saying crazy things about the taxi and the silver car is so stressed that the driver obviously is not looking where he is going, and bounces into the truck whilst shouting abuse with a bent neck to the taxi driver and then, as he swerves off the truck, whacks my back wheel -- there was a crack sound where I imagine his plastic fender was loosing shape from the truck-bump, but miracle number two I managed to keep on cycling with the truck now at my side with the driver now laughing telling me I should stop riding a bike in this city! What a morning -- things were worse earlier on as I ran in Central Park and had to jump out of the way of a woman jogger who was avoiding a mud patch and darted straight in front of me -- I had an instant choice - hit her or a metal pole. I now have a swollen knee and can barely limp -- so I need my bike right now. That’s life.. And it was not even 7-AM when all was said and done!
Haile Geb on a roll - 60:17 for another Half Win, in Granollers, Spain. Francis Kiprop, hung until the 15km mark, to place second - 60:50. Gete Wami, the 1999 10,000m world champion and three-time world cross country champion, won the women's race in 70:24. Geb thinks the WR will not fall in London as the field is too deep.

A visit to the Kip Keino Children’s Home will leave you finding no kids -- they have moved to farm and the orphanage (following the divorce of Kipchoge & Phyllis) is now called the Lewa Children’s Home and is run by Phyllis (for the kids) and a Dutchman called Jos for the farm -- and what an impressive farm it is! Jos, who has been in Kenya for 13-years has done a tremendous job.
We got stopped by the police for speeding on the return trip, 74 in a 50 zone but Starbucks pointed out to the Police that there was no road sign saying we could only do 50 (this happens with 90% of the people they stop apparently) so we were free to travel on. Ah, life in Kenya. No signs, no fines.
Life goes on in any easy fashion -- Doris is trying to run ‘top five’ for the XC race this weekend, she was talking about the frustrations that came about last year after qualifying and not being taken for the Kenyan team for the world XC -- we call her Sunflower now as she is always smiling. The two ‘new’ arrivals also might go and run -- Naomi has ran a 2:02 800m and Viola low 15’s for the 5000; the camp is full of talent. The race is called the Kabarak XC and is a couple of kilometers from Tergat’s large farm, and the former President (Arap Moi) houses.
New Year’s Eve - We went to Kabarak for the Athletics Kenya XC meet -- the athletes on our team bus were Sunflower Doris in the Senior 8km, and Viola & Naomi in the 6km juniors. Stopping at a gas station we found a very nice article in the Daily Nation Newspaper about the Shoe4Africa race. Unfortunately a puncture made us a little late as the races started before the advertised 9-AM start(!) so the Juniors had to switch to the Senior 4k!
Three weeks ago I was sitting with John L. talking about this is going to be his year. The guy is exceptional, both in character and in sporting results. His raw speed insists that he should concentrate on time trials for running a PR, and slow tactical races for medal pop’s…
I thought the only way he could ‘lose’ in the commonwealth trials was to try and run a fast time (he has the stadium record at Kamaring & Eldoret)… with 20.7 200m speed, he should be a kicker… He has ran a 1:44 and has his goals set on a 1:43 for 2006, but based on his training, speed, and attitude I was telling him a commonwealth medal and a 1:42 are going to happen for him this year… so I was absolutely delighted to see that he won the trials!!

Millrose -- all credit to Bekele, he tried his best to stay with a better athlete. It was a gutsy effort as Bekele knew he could not let Bernard get away, but also could not run at the pace of the world class miler; let’s not forget Lagat is probably the finest indoor miler in the world right now.. And on the 145-m tight turned track Bekele still held off Silva after running laps in a lactic bath -- a true champion. And Lagat was absolutely beyond the mark of excellence; the way he ran was a marmalade performance, a cut above the best.

The Mayor of NYC is a hero -- what a nice guy huh? Now if I can just get him interested in Shoe4Africa…
At the races - well even with no ipod I finally got out to one of the races -- actually I only was going to run it as Rapido was going to as we were going for coffee, then when she didn’t I found myself thinking… okay it is only 4-miles, I can do it… Congrats to El-Mustafa & Leslie Higgins, 20-minutes and 24-minutes respectively the winners.
A steaming run from Vinyl Jim @ The Grid Iron Classic (Pitcher Jean and mini-one were out there too), and good to see The G’s out there too from WS, and Monsieur Mileage too, with Madame running… For once Mary the Empress of the NYRR was not running a race, she probably had done her miles at the crack of daylight hours earlier.. Good to see Laura and a troop from the Achilles on a perfect morning.. And a sage note4 from Yves-Marc, “The NYRR are being stricter adhering to the times they close registration….” Saw Denise and Joy from Urban, Century man too - congrats to the Urbz -

So last night I was out with a couple of friends at Vespa on Second Avenue, so the salad comes, and then the guy comes with the Pepper mill, and instead of asking, “Do you want pepper on your salad?’’ He asks in Italian “Desiderate il pepe?” So I reply in Swedish, and he looks at me and, in English, says, “What? What did you say?” I mean we are on Second Avenue, in the Eighties, this is not even Little Italy!

The following day I ran with the Simba until she had a pain in the leg (of course I got blamed) then after breakfast when I was just relaxing in the garden with Doris and Hilda, talking about knitting and the likes, and a man came to collect me to take me to the Iten center (“No questions, just come“). I went to the Iten Hospital and had a meeting with the District Public Health Officer. One of the key issues is there is no AIDS information yet printed into the tongue of Kalenjin (only Kiswahilii & English).
I ran with Hilda this morning -- we went earlier than the rest, and it was a good run. We ran about 8-minutes faster than when I did this loop with The Simba, and it was Lornah we found setting off for her run when we returned (Good job we didn‘t wait). Doris had gone to the track and did 10 x 400 very early also, “I got there before even the birds had arrived and was all alone.” These are tough runners I can tell you - able to push themselves to an extreme level.
The training is going well, I am running at least once a day and have fired Lornah as a training partner due to her belief that the clock turns as she wishes it to.
Gradually the roads are getting more runners back after the Xmas holidays and today Eldo Lise phoned up, as she is coming up from Nairobi to Eldoret for the New Year. AS I said, things always happening…

Doris Changeiywo was Number three at the Discovery XC in Eldoret -- she was in the leading group but fell with two kilometers to go and lost ground… The Simba is in her best ever form after setting records on her speed loop in Iten… from doing this she was tired so missed doing the race - she will run the Dutch 10k road champs on the 11th…. I wonder if there any Dutch men that can beat her?? Well there is Brother Luc I suppose…. Alison Rutto was a winner in her area districts, yet fainted in the provincials, Starbucks is asking if she’ll be given a wild card to compete in the nationals…. We really hope so!
Over 300,000 txt unsold for the Olympics.. Not looking good, though we hear the Queen of the Harriers and Anil may be going over to make a deficit in that number… 299,998 sounds better huh? Father Xmas -- Kenya Style…
Boxing day -- a holiday continued in Kenya; This day I traveled to Hilda’s home which is far away. The driver was the brother of Katui (who now goes under a Quatari name (amal Bilal Salem)
and was the pace maker for Stephen’s WR attempts this past season. First we drove to Eldoret to pick up supplies, then over the hills, passed Abraham Chebii’s house, passed by The Barsosio’s father’s home ranch, over the other side of the hills to a village of Kamoswar where the road ended, we stopped for more supplies, met a brother of Hilda then continued on a dirt road further into the interior. Then when the road finished we continued through the grass until finally we came to the Shamba where she was raised. Hilda has many sisters and brothers, in fact ten -- and many were around with some uncles and aunts. The mother, who introduced herself as Mama Hilda was very nice, (her kalenjin name is Jepkorir).
After cooking Hilda showed me around, we saw the sheep she had bought and the cow, and walked over the field’s where she used to play when younger, and also visited the hut of the grandmother. It was really nice and peaceful out there with a stunning landscape -- a real surreal experience and a special day. Then I went down the hill to the well to go and fetch water, the river was nearly dried up as there is currently a big shortage of water in Northern Kenya and its effects reached even these parts. I saw a chameleon on a log when climbing back up the hill with the water and caught its tail in my hand. Sadly it did not change its color.

Speaking of which thank you to Joy Dushey & her daughter Tunie Sophia for Sneakers, and a contribution for postage!
In Germany; Eliud Kipchoge, won the 3000m race in 7:33.07, (first ever outing on an indoor track).. Proving once again you do not need to train on an indoor track to race there --
"I didn’t have any experience, but the pace was ok for me,” confirmed the Olympic 5000m bronze medallist. “I never thought that I could run such a good time, but I felt very well and everything was wonderful.” The Man from Madrid tells us that Kipchoge will be the force at the indoors this year. and we believe him.
I met Stephanie Hidge in the park yesterday - how nice to see her again, back from Chad, doing three courses at Harvard, back to Chad, helping a lake, doing a marathon in two weeks, then back to Chad X3 - that’s Steph! And racing this weekend in the park.
A sign of the times -- People prefer to use their time by watching a show where others try to ‘make it’
American Idol, than watch virtually any other program on the box… I mean, it is like reality TV, what’s up with your Own life? Something that might be fun to watch --

Kenya Continued….
Well Moses fantastic career began in 1985 and ended in 2002 and he told us all the bumps, and turns with the K-Way, buying shoes and changing labels, starting the Fila, turning to the marathon, discovering Eric Kimmaiyo (“Can you believe me was running five hours per day? He was not even eating right thinking he had to reduce!”) Also Eric sometimes would do a second run of 2-hrs in the late afternoon(!) Well Moses took him from Hussein’s camp and made him into a 2:07 runner, and then the story of Joseph Chebet (another one mentioned earlier) whom was a cousin of Paul Yego.. Anyway for athletics interested people the converse was enthralling…
Xmas day dawned with a touch of cold creeping over the Great Rift at the crack of dawn. As usual it was dark when we left the camp. A white rabbit jumped about on the path -- he is called Omo after the Kenyan brand of washing powder, before us. I feared for his safety and hoped he survived the day’s cooking pots. The run today included Hilda (whose watch kept on beeping every 15-secs), Silvia, who is the sister of Hilda and is a former silver medalist in the world juniors, Doris who is the current East African XC Champion (sadly she also finished in a qualifying spot for the National XC team but was inexcusably omitted from the team), and Luc who I must have mentioned (a 2:10 Dutch runner). Luc is exactly my age so we have competitions every day regarding weight loss, who will die first, and the likes -- I am hoping he’ll run Boston this year. Hilda was going the longest with 2-hours. The amazing thing was on the running-rich roads Xmas brought a day of desertion from the tasks of running -- nobody was out there, save a few goats being yanked off in the directions of village camp fires.
I was gone for quite a while (bad guest) ‘Sylvia, “I thought you were supposed to be visiting us!” Next time!

I had my first bad night’s sleep on Saturday night --I used to have this mosquito who would wake me up each morning at 5:30 with a nip, he was like an unofficial alarm clock, and being a morning person that was livable.. I could never find him in the daylight hours…. Anyway, then he went away (vacation)..and when I returned two weeks ago myself he was a distant memory.. Until Saturday night.. At about 1-am I was just drifiting off when… buzz… plus the apartment despite every single window being wide open was like a pizza oven. I got bit! Unbelievable -- all that time in Africa and no problems.. It looks like Mr. Mosquito left a dynasty that is on a different time zone - 1-Am till 4-AM it was like buzza city… and because it was so hot in the room I could not hide under the blankets…. I last checked the clock at 4:40,,, and by 6-AM I was up - nevertheless had plenty of energy to a trip to the gym -- where I had the pleasure of rocking back and forth on the Ellipitico whilst chatting with Rapido and Bernie the (former) Chairman.. Upon leaving I did pick up the latest edition of Cosmo, and although I was not able to discover whether ‘You are a Jen or a Kate’ I was pleased to see that hot pink is the new color for fashion this year! Proving once again the T Shirt mishap in Kenya was a fashion move!

We hear from the Man in Madrid, “BTW did you see that Eliud Kipchoge is passing up Kenya's World Cross trials to run in the World Indoors.” Did not know that, a blow for Kenya’s team hopes.
At the gym -- I went in the evening, for once. So I am there stretching and I get this really odd feeling that everyone is looking at me. I immediately glance to check I am fully dressed, yep… and then I notice I am the only guy in the gym. It is full of women.. And instead of the usual Av. Age of 86+ (as with the morning hours) everyone is young -- the whole gym did a flip! Reminds me of the day when I was young (and had really long hair) and walked into this indoor market.. So I am browsing the stalls and I realize I am at a women’s only fair -- they only let me through the door because they thought I was a woman -- yep, I can remember that day like it was yesterday! I was so embarassed that I was scared to walk back through the gate for fear of being recognized as an imposter so I did laps and laps the fair hoping and praying that nobody would ask me any questions...
Kenya Continued
Today I have to go to Eldoret -- why? Because I was on the phone to the man who is doing my AIDS info at the Shoe race and at the end of the phonecall he says, “Ok, I see you in Eldoret later today,” and then hangs up -- That’s the Kenyan way, so now I go to look for a ride…. I want to see Daniel Komen anyway so I can kill two birds…., did you know the guy has 9-brothers and sisters? The mother is unsure of who Daniel’s father is… imagine, I bet a lot of Kenyan men who like to adopt him!
Eldoret was its usual self and after arguing with the T shirt vendor about 500-things I went with Jeroen to the Internet ‘caffe’ as it is called and bought 500-minutes of time -- ha, I thought it a lot of time, but it took an outstanding 28-minutes to open AOL, read one message and send a reply(!) The page kept on failing to load. It was quite a shock to be ‘online’ again… One email that I was typing to send timed out and disappeared before I sent it -- what might say a case of devine editing; not meant to be sent. Funny though the whole ride back to Iten I was in a completely different mindset to the journey there; thus is the case of getting news from the West… the conversation I had on the way with another Dutch guy, Luc (who disappeared off into Eldoret) was about things of life that happen by meeting of a certain person at a certain time that triggers a thought or a decision; like why do we meet people at times, and why-- yah, anyway we also had to go to the supermarket to get a few things.. Can’t believe it is xmas in two days!…
Christmas Eve-- To Eldoret and the whole morning was spent with the T shirt salesman. So here is the problem -- he quoted a price for 600-T shirts, then he only bought 410 or something as the price was higher than he expected, and also instead of ordering 140-medium and many smalls he bought 90% XL -- all in the wrong color! Useless apart from pajama wear. Too bad for us -- a prepaid order.

To Kisumu -- we had a day trip, driving through Eldoret, past Kip Keino’s new place of residence, through the Nandi Hills and Kapsabet (past the house of Elijah Lagat, who won Berlin in 97 after reducing 30-lbs of body weight, that was purchased from Yobes Ondieki (who has now moved into the Elgon area of Eldoret, Down into the hot, hot valley where the vultures sit like parched camels crying of the sandy throat to lake Victoria. The area of Kisumu is famous for fish, we went to a huge supermarket where the Simba bought a book about cooking pasta for the camp. Starbucks sniffed out a restaurant and we went to be hassled in the food court where seven waiters jumped on us throwing menu’s from different eateries-- I went for Goan Curry, and it was damn good -- so good I tipped the waiter twice (can’t drop the New York habits as tipping is not the custom here in Kenya, luckily the tips are much smaller).
The next day the training was supposed to be 1’ 20” with the Simba, I was a little worried as my knee is bad (probably from running over boggly land and ruts), anyway The Simba overslept (not for the first time) and knowing that the previous day’s delay was circa 2-hours we decided to run without her, so I went with Luc, Hilda, Silvia, and Doris (Luc is hopefully running Boston, did I mention Paul Kirui is also running Boston?).. Anyway we went on the famed Singore Road which is not used as much now as it was in the 90’s and after a couple of lame Kenyans that we passed Hilda picked up the pace. After a couple of K’s we came to a big hill I was dying of death when we came to the top.. Bad news we were only half way done… and I was done. We call Hilda Sunshine now, but that‘s another story…
At the districts in Bomet XC (Kenya) -- “Italy-based marathoner Alice Kimetto posted a time of 27:22.25 to clinch the 8km senior women race. Faith Chemutai also based in Italy clocked 27:36.60 to take second position followed by Tegla Loroupe's niece Fridah Lodeba in 29:24.25.” AS reported by the Nation. This was the real class race of the day, the other events were weak by Kenyan standards.
Shoe4Africa Updates: Thanks to Adam M for the latest Shoe4Africa shoes & tracksuit contribution, and thanks also to Rapido for Shoes, socks, and postage to Eldoretta!
Got a Xmas card from Epo-Berk -- he managed to find an Irish Xmas card, what a nice soul he is -- apparently he has ‘one more season left as King of the Roads’ -- we can hope longer, as the man is a legend over in Ireland, and in Eldoret too!
Bumped into R2 last night -- she has moved into the ‘Hood, in fact she now lives right across the street from me! I wonder if she has cable??
Up at the Store -- Todd, “I saw Ramon without his shirt on and thought of my Father…” Delightful, don’t want to go there… Todd stands to win a flippin fortune if he has a decent run at Chicago, and talking about fortunes Anil is trying to sublet his apartment for the week -- for a price of $600, Jeremy is back studying hard and according to Todd, ‘Is the new Costanza’ in the sales department…. What I can’t understand is how I am Tipping the scales; fatter than when I left for Kenya! Unbelievable… When Lipo is the only option!
From Jose, “Exercising at Night Can disrupt Your Sleep patterns.
Starting next week the Urban running training will start up again at the store 6:45 on Madison & 92nd with focus and zest!
A Dumb bust --Moroccan tennis player Younes El Aynaoui tested positive for marijuana in Italy last month and could face a three-month suspension…. How does marijuana help you win a tennis match?? Like Sotomayer’s cocaine bust

Can Anyone Help? Susan Sirma was an amazing runner in the early nineties -- she was Africa’s first ever medallist in the world track & field Championships. On December 23rd a house fire took all of her possessions -- luckily Susan and her children were unhurt by the incident. However one thing Susan was sad about was that all her running memorabilia was destroyed -- all her pictures, and trophies, and stuff gathered from years racing. If anyone has any old running magazines with pictures of her, articles, whatever, can you photocopy them so we can get them to her?? Thank you!
A huge turn out for the Flyers last night -- wow, could it be the continuing saga of the cupcakes (banana this week) following the workouts, and kudos to Judith for bringing Honey to the workout! The Park was full of cyclists, and this morning I ran in CP with Rapido - some zipping around on the dirt paths, the first run I have enjoyed doing since I got back from the Fabboland of Kenya
Many of the Flyers are getting ready for the Manhattan Half that is to be run this weekend for the first ever time! A great chance to get some good miles in with the company of half of NYC’s running community.
Double Olympic champion Hicham El Guerrouj has pulled out of the World Indoor Championships in Moscow this March due to back problems. Most of the Kenyans were not interested in this race -- the major focus for them is the World XC, and not even the Commonwealth Games -- apart from Augustine Choge who is winning all the short XC races right now in Kenya -- he wants to do the 5000 in Melbourne. A tad of a shame for Kenya as he is still a junior and is the reigning world XC Champ in that event… but… Isaac Songok has been within a second of him in the last two major races, and plans to be running the cross country.
Thanks to Evelyn (hotrod) & Michelle L (of the Flyers) for Shoe4Africa help with shoes n clothes. And Tom Carlin, & Marguerite Del Valle for shoes.
Another mention of the Shoe4Africa race in the Kenyan press as all eyes fall on the Discovery XC in Eldoret -- one of the year’s best meets. When I was leaving Kenya there was speculation that the Simba was going to contest this one in her preps for the World Champs… Doris may run too (the winner of the Shoe4Africa race), and I am watching out for Naomi Kemboi in the Juniors…. The first prize is 10,000-shillings, at 72 shilling s per dollar that works out at $140 or less.. And to win this race you have to be one of the world’s best in XC… it is the prelude to the Nationals on February 11th. That race is too much -- 300 odd charging athletes moving at the speed of the light over a horse race course.

Wonderbread introduces… wholewheat! Maybe someone told them there was a health boom.. Looming…
Another wonder --
From the Press on the announcement of the World Major’s --Quotes:
“We are all very serious about our business…” David Bedford, “Continue to work on a number of activities.” We are World Marathon Majors, at the moment.. We are not exclusive, we will add….” A Competition for Elite Athletes, based on a 2-yr cycle starting in Boston, finishing in NY 2007, earning points for the Olympics, World Champs, and the five marathons… 25pts for a winner, etc… A maximum of four scores, a minimum of three qualifier races…Male & Female divisions going for a $1-million total prize ($500,000 each).” After pending sponsorship this figure could be doubled…
“The first in many steps… A long term project.” Guy Morse.
“A million dollars more in the sport today than there was yesterday… what’s not to like?” Mary Wittenberg.
“Like Mary said, something to look forward to. I am definitely excited, so thanks for having us.” Meb Keflezighi.
London marathon organisers insist they have assembled the strongest field ever in this year's men's race. And few would argue with that - once again.
NAIROBI, Kenya - A five-story building collapsed Monday in central Nairobi with more than 280 construction workers inside, killing at least 11 people and injuring more than 70, witnesses and officials said. Sad to read that -- but after being there it does not surprise me at all.
10.6km road race held in Monteforte d'Alpone, near Verona, was won by
1. Hassan Mubarak Shami, QAT, 30:21 (Richard Yatich - our tip for London this year).
2. Jaouad Gharib, MAR, 30:34
3. Salvatore Vincenzi, ITA, 31:09.
Women's race (6km)
1. Asha Tonolini, ITA, 21:12
Kenya continued….But catching up on the runners here’s a brief run down --
A trip to Kapcherop! We were driving (Shadrack and I) when we chanced upon a meeting with David CheKirui -- the elder brother of the late great Richard Chelimo, so we scooped him into the car and climbed high, and high up into one of the most beautiful areas of the whole world-- you climb and climb, we passed Eric Kimaiyo’s house, and Laban Kipkemboi’s, went up and up till we came to the school where Boniface Teren has a camp. It was here Reuben Kosgei and Ezekiel Kemboi trained, and the coach has also guided all the great from Kiptanui to the Ismael Kirui’s…. You can easily see why the runners succeed here --absolutely amazing. I wanted to go to Chelimo’s home to pay respects to the mother but it appeared the clock was running faster than a pair of Kenyan legs… We had a tour of the camp and I gave a speech to the kids and talked about all kinds of things (as I had no idea what they wanted me to talk about) before we left to go and see Paul Kirui, “Yes I started running in 2001, then I did not do well at the world half, I was #9, but luckily with some more training I won in 2004...”

Chubbs is off to Jamaica for the week, something about dragons or something.
Here’s the course for the USATF
XC Champs next month up at VCP. Be there, or be an oval.
LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon announced that the 2005 edition of their race raised $6.3 million for charity. Proving once again….running makes a better world.
Martina Hingis continuing to come back well in Oz Land.
The Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon, part three of the greatest race, had the top 15 men coming from One Nation - amazing.
Fighting words --
Shaheen admitted. "I will win the next time, actually at World Championships in Fukuoka." In Japan for that XC Shaheen will run both races, for a strong Qatar Team.

Central Park -- I missed the race, I missed a training run, and barely got out of the door for a slow jog round the loop.. But it was good to see Monsieur Mileage (Saw the Madame I day before) to assure me that NYC is still NYC back in the park… the major blow (after stopping three times) was it was too cold for the Ipod again… Saturday however was really nice, I saw all the Achilles TC in the park, Chubby, and in the afternoon I went over to La G. where Rapido won the Patience of the Year award looking through my 1090 (I kid you not) Africa photos! The last person to look at them all, Omulu from the IAAF, fell asleep halfway through, woke up and the slideshow was still not finished. We met Shiney over there too who tells us he is training well - a resolution? Speaking of which the first points race will be the snowflake and Shiney will be needed, along with Danny the Dollarman who is training specifically for that event, and OzPaul who (apparently has been setting speed limits at the Armory).

So I finally get round to looking at the results of the Fred Lebow race, and wow Rapido was #6th overall! I knew she had won the race but…. super cool -- top five next! And welcome Joy Dushey to the team, our second female finisher.
Finally getting used to traffic lights again, until I was up in Harlem -- seems like Eldoret with cars darting across the street independently of traffic signs!
Kenya continued…
I walked round to St Patrick’s HS where I used to live ten years ago… another déjà vu -- I was also in the Daily Nation newspaper ten years ago -- for a running race (the Armed Forces Half Marathon where I finished 19th -- I am eager to check the photo credit as I still have the clipping to see if it is the same photographer. All these thoughts and more as I looked into St Patrick’s and could virtually see myself a decade ago coming running out with Benson Koech, Japheth Kimutai, Rose Cheruiyot, Sally Barsosio and the like…
The opening was a good success -- Moses Kiptanui, Moses Tanui, Hellen Kimaiyo, Yobes Ondieki, Susan Sirma, Godfrey Kiprotich were some of the athletes in attendance. Many politicians including Nicholas Biwott who is perhaps the biggest land owner in Kenya, and certainly one of the richest men came and gave speeches… a lot of the talk was about policies concerning whether foreign athletes should be banned, and also asking for athletes to invest in Kenya. I talked to Ondieki about his world record, “I was never planning under 27, but it came, so I had to accept it right? (Followed by big laughs). I had a mini meeting with Kiptanui whom I know from a long time ago in the track running days (he was the first sub-8 min steepler, as Yobes was the first sub-27 man) about supporting his camp. Hellen, who ran in the ‘84 Olympics, is planning a comeback in ‘06, and is now living in Nairobi. Sirma arrived late after work constraints, she is doing business with maize these days. Also Judith Kiplimo, Edna Kiplagat (who is racing in the US) was there -- she has a photo of me from ‘95 at her home but did not recognize me this time with long hair. Then I met Hilda Kibet’s elder sister Silvia who was an extreme talent a few years ago (she won the world silver 1500 juniors) -- she is currently making a comeback and star bucks tips her to win the Shoe4Africa race.

THE SHOE4AFRICA PHOTOALBUM!! (Best viewed by changing the delay secs at the top of the album from 3 to 5)
Paul Tergat, and the Shoe4Africa race, offer Kenya’s only Free entry races. Shoe4Africa even offered all entrants a free T shirt… and you would not believe the battles for the T shirts -- no exaggeration to say we had to throw the T shirt maker in jail on xmas eve!! More will be revealed in the saga… And thanks to eagle eye Kurt for forwarding this story --on Kenyah!.
Another next day -- Lornah had a rest day so I ran solo -- good as I was tired from the gun. After breakfast with Starbucks, Luc, and The Simba I borrowed a mountain bike and cycled into Iten’s center. As I stopped a guy came up to me, “Are you Toby Tanser?” Flippin good guess!! “Ah, I knew I would find you -- I got an email from Wendy yesterday and I told her I’d find you -- you know Kenya is a small place.”
So this guy, Philamon Terer is corresponding with Wendy in New Jersey over email, and Wendy wanted to give me something before I left, but I had left…. Another small world huh? I ended up getting the stuff later when Drew passed by Iten.

With the Flyers last nighgt -- full marks for Heather-- although she did not do the workout she did bring cupcakes to the workout, and the good news was that everyone wanted to eat them after they ran so I had first dips… the weather was not too gruesome, in fact it warmed up a bit, and as I was dressed like Frosty the Extreme Eskimo I survived.. Speaking of weather nobody will be complaining that it is too cold for the Manhattan Half this year - it is coming at the end of this month. The first NYRR points’ race will be the snowflake!
The flight to Kenya, via Amsterdam was l-o-n-g, and as usual the sleep decided to fly somewhere else leaving me to shuffle and itch round the seat 23D. Didn’t even eat too much as I was not really that hungry. Arriving in Nairobi I was very surprised to see that the airport is no longer an arm grabbing, luggage disappearing street market of erratic movement. I had a driver waiting, and we had to wait let me tell you my second bag was the slowest of the slow at crawling off the airplane and onto the conveyor belt… there was an inch of questions concerning my race banner at the customs -- “What is that, are you here for business?” “No, it is for Golf!” So the man asked, “What can you do with Golf with this?” “Haven’t you seen the latest golf magazine?” I say waving the banner around like a club- apparently he had not, but it was enough to let me in the country…. With the banner.
Stand by - Ten minutes before the plane left the doors opened. I got the very last seat on the plane (only 20-seats) and anyone who has had to go back into town and take a communal taxi knows how lucky I was to get that seat! The plane flys low and over a game reserve… didn‘t see any lions however.
News from BOSTON - In a change designed to provide a better experience at the
beginning of the race both for participants and residents, the Boston
Athletic Association in cooperation with the Town of Hopkinton will
implement a wave start for this year's Boston Marathon.
