Grete’s Gallop Half Marathon in Central Park - Enos Matalane 25 SOUTH AF 1:02:56 -- a new stunning course record, beating Mark Carroll’s 63:18. Enos won the Corporate Challenge yesterday running full speed to a new course record(!) What could he have done?? And to #1 Anne Kugler 37 UATH NY 1:15:54 -- A new PR -- well done! And remember this was a points scoring race, but Anne would have been a scorer for any (bar one by two slots) of the men’s teams.. She won the women’s race by nearly five minutes.

Urban Athletics 5th team -- forget the fact we’re supposed to be in the B league! And 11th in the women’s teams. Without even Chubby or Stumpy running for the men -- and with OzPaul doing the double -- running the Corp on Saturday too, and Cara or Flyin‘ Fiona for the women (though we have somewhat given up on Flyin‘ ever appearing)….Some fab age groupers lead by our fave --Ginette Bedard 72-yrs old NY 1:45:54, Stephanie Hodge 40 NYH NY 1:28:28 (Happy Birthday, missed that one), Edie Perkins 34 GNY NY 1:23:01, This guy is unstoppable John Samsel 61 WTC NY 1:27:22, The Rope James Lynch 40 WS NY 1:09:47, and Alan Ruben 48 CPTC NY 1:15:21.

Tis hearsay, but Chris Stewart (1:15) had come into the store on Tuesday saying how he was going to ‘destroy’ Danny the Dollarman… well too bad he was in a different park of the park to the Dollarman so no destroying was possible… a good few blocks behind.. Want to talk ‘destroy?’ Alex obliterated her PR by 12-minutes! Paola too did damage -- well run to y’all! Rick P from the Wedza night group, who runs for the Flyers, ran a huge PR… I had a bucket full of PR emails - everyone is rocking!!

World Champs - Pre race Sihine, “I am really motivated to be here in Edmonton and I am certainly here to win the gold medal. That would make me really happy, so I will do whatever it takes to win the race. But talk was not enough as Fabulous Shoe4Africa Team Timmax Naasi Fabiano Joseph won the Gold in 61:08 for Tanzania!! From Shami Mubarak Hassan of Qatar (of Kenya) 61:09, Kifle Yonas of Eritrea was third in 61:13... #6. John Yuda, TAN 1:02:11 Shami raised his arms and Fabiano sprinted by, "I was thinking I had won the race. But I'm not disappointed. Competition is like that, and I'm very happy with my silver medal."

Constanina Tomescu-Dita from Romania soloed to a 69:17 win over Lornah Kiplagat of the Netherlands, 70:19, and Susan Chepkemei of Kenya, 70:20. Dita will run Chicago next week(!) The Romanians ran away with Team Gold, from Russia, and Japan. The African team challenge never materialized -- with Ethiopia’s Adere and Kidane running the GNR instead, and Tulu obviously tired from winning there (67’ to 72’)… Good result from Canada’s Stevenson Nicole 1:14:26 in #28 - she won a Half in the park last year…. Anyway back to Romania - how good were they? Adriana Pirtea ran 71:10 and did not even count as a team scorer. The men’s teams? Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Japan. The USA men‘s did well in #6 with local man Matt Downin running a 64‘ -- Kudos to all the country‘s that sent full teams -- Shame on Britain for sending not one single man… I mean…. And Yes Jon Brown pulled out, but…

The Simba speaks, “Well Anne, since you were number One in Grete’s, and I was just number two in Edmonton we have to see who is the best!“ Back in NYC last night. “Anything I say tonight you can not put on the web site, okay?” Okay.

But news from the big day; Simba news - “Lornah won today her first medal ever in a Championship. She finished 2nd in the World Championships Half Marathon in Edmonton, Canada. Conditions were tough with 5 degrees and rain and Lornah had already after 5 K problems with cramps. However, she was able to hang in and at the finish she won the sprint from Susan Chepkemei.” From Starbucks.

Spaghetti making the headlines like the legend he is.
The NYRR is looking for pacers for the Long training run -- obviously this means you get a free entry, but also it is great experience for the marathon as you are learning to hold pace -- beginners welcome, no obligations from 6-20 miles RSVP ASAP… 7’min milers & 7:30’s needed.
From Wendy, “Two cannibals are eating a clown. One says to the other: "Does this taste funny to you?" Ha ha love it.
I met Mgee & BethGee on Sunday morning as they were wheeling Katie to her first ever race -- The Troll Stroll 75-yards event. She looked focused! No doubt a future Warren St star with those genes….
And speaking WS I ran, limped, round the park with Stephane aka Monsieur Mileage -- always a pleasure, I really like running with this guy and we had a nice chat agreeing we have to meet up sooner, rather than later, for that omelet & coffee… Funnily enough he is also going to France this week.

Poor Stephane has a malady with his Kidney’s… got me thinking about the people who died in the GNR the other week, last week in fact. Five people died at the race, I mean that is a nice way to go though huh? When I was in my mid twenties I had some tests done on my heart and they said I had a murmur and should get an Echogram. Years later up in the Bronx when I was doing a running test the Doctor told me the same thing, he was listening through a stethoscope and said that I should defo get an echogram because I had a murmur. I never looked into it. I mean what if they said, “You have to be inactive, can’t do things blah blah.. I always think it is best not to know in these cases. And to back me up -- a young runner in Sweden, awesome talent was told something was wrong with his heart, so he stopped in his prime. Years, and years later, he decided to take up running again disregarding the Doctor’s advise -- he got to the Olympics, won the European Cup, was the top ranked Swede in ‘77, albeit past his prime -- what could have been? And still healthy n wealthy today.

Three Chinese track and field athletes have been banned after testing positive for steroids in a random drug test over in Beijing. Apparently China is doing a big clean up before the 2008 Games.
More on Balco. More on drugs. Whatever happened to Tim Montgomery? Thanks to Jeff for the link.
More bicycles than cars have been sold in the United States over the past 12 months! Not since the oil carumba of ‘73 have bicycles been bigger than cars. I‘ll swop mine for an E-type jaguar, no offers.
TGV sends his report from San Diego’s Marine Boot Camp, “You had to crawl on your hands and knees in the dirt on some parts of the obstacle course (with the Drill Instructors screaming in your face-fortunately by the time they got to me or me to them they had no voices left). At least in Leathermans’ you are upright the whole race (unless you trip on a tree root). It was exhausting.” Ha, makes me think of one time when I was in Kenya trying to explain to a group of Kenyans that ‘we’ pay for race entries, and that they cost as much as $75-80 for marathons. They were in shock, “You pay for that, to run?”

Paul Tergat to pull out of the BUPA Great South Run now. Two weeks ago he pulled out of the GNR, and that hamstring is not yet in perfecto condition, and with the ING-NYC a-coming up….best to rest up. former Olympic and world marathon champion Gezahegne Abera, two-times Olympic 10,000m champion Derartu ’Mizuno’ Tulu, & Abera's wife Elfenesh Alemu plan to be there.
Is it not miraculous that the world is just a literate paradise? I mean everytimne you read an interview and the interviewer asks, “What book are you reading at the moment?” The interviewee answers, “oh War & Peace, and I’ve just finished…” I mean… I mean… yeah right!
Sorry to miss the dinner last night to honor Grete, but coaching duties called in the Park. The Grete race is on Sunday remember. Immediately when (if) I finish I am heading for the Bagel & lox line.

The Madison Marathon mob -- some of them doing their last hard workout before next week’s Chicago Marathon. Countdown time! Tapering and toast, the time when you really feel for training, the antsy days.. Don’t miss them at all. Personally I would like to do another marathon one of these days, but it won’t be unless I train for one, and have no pains doing the training.

World Champs this weekend -- Fabiano Joseph who was second in the last two editions of the World Half Marathon Championships -- can this Shoe4Africa/Team Timmax athlete go one spot better? The heavy money is on Sihine of Ethiopia who, despite the fact, he is just to make his Summer/Fall road debut, is an athlete few would bet against.

Red Wine, Baguettes, Edith Piaf, the Moulin Rouge, beer in a smoky café for breakfast, un petit pain au chocolat.. I’m a getting ready to hit the city -- the project takes place in a Park know for its prostitutes, but apparently has many good running (escape) trails. Cruiser told me to keep a French Tart by my bedside, but I am not sure that is what she meant! The locale is Bois de Boulogne, I think anyway… and the real miracle is that for the first ever time I actually know where in the city I headed to…. When I boarded the planes top London & Berlin to do these projects I was without a pot of glue… I think I am going to pack my swimming trunks and swim the seine… Also going to knock at the door of Mr. Coppola’s house, so he better answer, I’ll tell him I have a special delivery from café Habanna and that’ll get me through the door.. As long as my corn does not get confiscated at the airport -- the only stuff I have had confiscated so far at the airports is a pineapple in Colombia, peaches in Puerto Rico, and yes - Paris(!) took some of my Kenyan Unga (flour) and attempted to take my wattle tree twigs….

I actually ‘adore’ Paris -- the first time I went was when I was a nipper with my parents and we slept in a van round the corner from the Moulin Rouge… it was a long story, but we got stuck on a roundabout and people drive like… well finally pulling up on a side street we had no energy to go any further. I remember at 6-am in the morning I took a walk from the van to check out the ’hood (as everyone else slept). When I turned the corner as the smell of tobacco and beer was awash in the air, and there was this flippin red windmill! I ran back to the car, “I know where we are!” We camped there for a couple of days, a good spot! Le Exclusive, no other campers on La Rue -- the things you can do with a VW hippy bus are unlimited. The next time I went was my thumb, and then motorcycle - a city one never forgets, like Amsterdam, and unlike that city I once stayed in around Ohio whose name eludes me now.

Back to the world Half: The Japanese squad is led by the World record holder at 30Km on the road Takayuki Matsumiya, Toshihiro Iwasa, Kazuo Ietani, Takamasa Otsubo and Yoshihiro Yamamoto. And Terumi Asoshina, Akane Taira, Hiromi Ominami, and Yoko Yagi.
And of course Good Luck to the Simba going for her first Championship win!
Winning the World Duathlon Champs - the Mens and Womens elite races: Paul Amey (GBR) and Michelle Dillon (GBR).
Africa - $200-million a month servicing old debts.
Nice interview with jos Hermans -- but doesn’t everyone want it? “They always want to win and win. Bekele will remain a champion for 10 years. He would like to go on and on like Gebrselassie did," said Hermens.”
Voting for the NYRR Board -- it is over now, but I received an email from The Captain this morning; “besides you (thanks Cap’n) who should I vote for?” Well, ten days ago…. Do you think Chubby voted? Yeah right! And look who is talking -- I nearly forgot myself.

Itati leads the pack whilst preparing for the Las Vegas Marathon in December!

From the NYRR, “Abdi Abdirahman, the national record holder at 20K, leads three other American men—Ryan Shay, Matt Downin, and Peter Gilmore—as the latest additions to the field for the ING New York City Marathon 2005, it was announced today by New York Road Runners president and CEO and race director Mary Wittenberg.”

Well yesterday was spent eating bread and scrunching honey from the jar. The bread, and that was the reason for the Racoon hanging around the training group in the park with his little baby racoons, was baked by Joe, one of my assitant coaches freshly a few hours before the session for me the night before. So Judith, eyeing the loaf, says, “You are always getting gifts from the Flyers!” Back up, I’ve received two gifts - two loaves- in as many years, is that not, urm, “Always” in the bounteous gift receiving??
Al Kooper, what a guy, “I didn’t want to go (on tour) to Dallas, I was scared, I saw what they did to Kennedy, and thought what would they do to us??” Gotta love the way he describes he got the organ job on Rolling stone (re: Butterfield story).
Another good reason to sign up for Sunday - “There are waffles! And salmon, Jarlsberg cheese, Grete Waitz, and more. Celebrating Norway’s 100 years of independence, we bring you the centennial anniversary edition of this day of running, walking, Norwegian food, and entertainment.”
Pierre the Pusher at the Store today and Costanza notices, “Hey are you interested in the Ponies? Gambling again?” Uh oh, looks like the Pusher is rubbing up the bets again… Stan asks, “Is that the guy I am supposed to get a massage with??”
Camp Kenya - Wilson Kebenei Kiprotich dropped out of the Kenyan team to the World Half-Marathon Championships to be held in Edmonton, Canada. Gilbert Okari and Julius Kibet, Paul Kimugul and James Mwangi remain.
In the women’s category, Susan Chepkemei, Selina Kosgei and Caroline Cheptanui, all ready to roll.
I ran with Christine, Kathleen, and Erica from the zippy Moving Comfort yesterday morning -- what a pleasure, twas a beautiful day in the park.
Down on the track Eric wanting to hop to the upper groupo, Ross should have, Suneet still of Hoboken, Lissy long hours in Manhattan, Shawn even longer - 9 to 7? That’s early! Chucky back in the groove, The Basque of Brooklyn firing along, Vanessa pushing very well, Cristina - nobody finishes faster! Cruiser, head down and pushed hard. Anne G getting it down, and Nancy too with her London singlet - very natty. Peter2 working like a maverick, Anil in his winter hat, Jeff feeling the sore legs, Luis with leg dead, and Luiz with speedster legs - let the group go and chased them down. Centuryman growlin down the straights, The Commander looking shift gear 4, OzPaul belting round like a boomerang, Masterblaster getting into her stride very nicely -- she is Urban’s most medalled runner winning international marathons in her day(!) Michelle who flew down 5th Ave -- the less she trains the faster she goes - ssh! Trackman David -- may not have got the lights on, but he has his turbo on. Charlotte running with her ailments poor thing. Randy in his last pre-Chicago workout. Welcome back Fred from ML! Rick running into thick waters, but hanging. Jamie gobbling up the track and taking no prisoners (ie a dead Rick). Heather looking like “I’m back, here I come!”

German Engineered for a Japanese Winner.
Earlier this summer Horst Milde, who was the race director of Berlin Marathon up to 2003 before handing the job over to his son Mark, stood below the impressive Brandenburg Gates, "The Berlin Marathon does not have the budget of other big races, but we do have the great course." This year they also had the greatest number of runners, a whopping 39,882 -- more than any other marathon in history.

The Olympic champion Mizuki Noguchi, 27-yrs old and powered by a love of sushi, had bypassed the chance to upgrade her World Silver medal (from Paris 2003) at this summer’s games in order to take a crack at the Japanese national record (Yoko Shibui, Berlin ’04: 2:19:41). Last year after winning in Athens she had made her intent clear on claiming the National record over competing at the Helsinki world championships. Marathon running is at a premium in the Far East at the present, and with the 2000 Olympic Champion Naoko Takahashi recently signing a multi-million dollar sponsorship Noguchi, who hails from the city of Ise, probably surmised a Sub 2:20 clocking and a national record would greatly increase her worth on the Tokyo Stock Exchange -- a slight hint of Japan’s commercial impact on the Berlin race? Check out the fact Miuzuki had Japanese text printed on the bib number at Berlin. The weather at the 32nd Real Berlin Marathon on Sunday was slightly warmer than usual, and with no competition bar the clock the diminutive star, who had not raced a marathon since her Golden day in Athens 2004, led the race with only the company of male pacemakers to disturb her record shot.

After reaching the 10k marker in 32:53 she already had over a minute on her rivals. The half way was reached in 1:09:19 with a pack of three women still within reach, two and a half minutes in arrears. However only the weather, which reached 70-degrees Fahrenheit at the finish, could compete with Noguchi who lengthened the winning margin to nearly eight and a half minutes as she broke the tape in 2:19:12 -- becoming the third fastest woman in history after Briton’s Paula Radcliffe and the mind boggling 2:15.25 in London ‘03, and Catherine Ndereba of Kenya (Chicago ‘01: 2:18.47). The winner deduced the heat cost her a 2:18 clocking.

Both the runners-up, Germany's Luminita Zaitac 2:27:34, and Ethiopia's Asale Tafa, 2:28:27, expressed satisfaction with their performances. Noguchi, who had smashed her PR by over two minutes, praised the crowd and course before dedicating the win to her coach Nobuyuki Fujita. Fujita has coached for the past 37-years in Japan and his athletes have set national records from the quarter mile to the half marathon, only the marathon distance had eluded his full house.

King Kenya; As Usual -- Kenyan men have an almost Boston like lock on the winners’ podium in the German capital, they had taken the past six men’s titles and although the men’s event did not have any clear favorites as with the women’s field, a slue of elite Kenyans were poised to continue the winning trend. In fact the only non African born athlete looking capable to challenge for the overall title was the man who broke the Kenyan ten-year winning streak in Boston, Bong-ju Lee of Korea. The Korean had stated in a press conference earlier in the week, "I am here to win… I will show that the Korean runners can still win and I will prove it here."

However Lee’s challenge lasted only just before the large lead pack hit the half way marker in 63:38, when he faded and would eventually finish 11th in 2:12:19. Already it was clear that the men’s course, and world, record of 2:04:55, set by Kenyan Paul Tergat in 2003, would not be broken.

Last year the Kenyan Philip Manyim, also 27, was ‘just’ pace making world class steeplechase races on the International circuit. In the fall of last year he turned to marathoning, and with confidence reamed from his Second place finish at this Spring’s Rome Marathon, 2:08:07 (a stunning upgrade from his Amsterdam debut in ‘04; 2:18:17), he surged strongly in his third race over the 26.2-mile distance before the 30k mark (1:29:54) to distance himself from a group of his very fast countrymen. It took a series of 4:40 miles but it was enough for the veteran Kenyans Peter Chebet, Michael Rotich, Joshua Chelanga, and Jackson Koech, to allow a slight gap to open up. As with Noguchi the Kenyan began to suffer in the heat and told afterwards of his struggle over the final two miles, but the closest pursuers, now just Koech and Chebet (the younger brother to the former Boston & New York Champ Joseph), were also suffering! Manyim managed to hold on to a 2:07:41 win, over a minute ahead of Chebet, 2:08:58, with Jackson Koech, 2:09:07, making it a Kenyan clean sweep.

The first non-African in the race turned out to be the Boulder-based Australian Andrew Letherby setting a new PR of 2:11:42, surely to cement his place on the Australian Commonwealth Games team for Melbourne 2006. A month ago Letherby’s coach, Nic Bideau, had predicted two things for his stable; Mottram would win the 5th Avenue Mile, and Letherby would PR in Berlin -- he was right on the Mark, or was that the Yen?
A report on Berlin by your intrepidso reporter.

Moses Bittok--a correctional officer in Iowa-- Kenyan immigrant took his oath of citizenship, and later that day discovered that he held the winning lottery ticket for $1.89 million.
Heja, heja Grete! As they say over ‘i norge’ -- Grete’s Race on Sunday -- I would not miss it, and a great story on the IAAF site about the legend herself. It is also a *points race men/women*
On RW Online David K writes, “Yet almost 25 years later "Chariots of Fire,"-- a thoughtful character study that builds to some genuinely transcendent moments -- remains the standard for all running movies.” I used to think so myself, until I saw Tokyo Olympiad by the director Kon Ichikawa about the '64 Olympics and realized where Attenborough got all his ideas for Chariots of Fire from! The similarities are spooky, but the cinematography is far greater in the Tokyo film.
Off to Las Vegas this weekend is Nina Kuscsik for the USATF meetings, she says they are marathon events (in length). Nina is the twice NYC Marathon winner and I was lucky enough to listen her talk about her running days in the 70’s this spring in a meadow in Central Park and it is truly amazing stuff -- her running life would make a great book, she started off as a cyclist, got a puncture.. And the rest is history!
I guess Takahashi had similar thoughts in 2001, "My next aim is to run two hours 18mins, after that of course there is being in Beijing and defending my title in 2008," said 27-year-old Noguchi.
Lidingöloppet 30K, September 24th - the world’s biggest XC race (in terms of entrants) Män - 1) Silas Sang, Kenya, 1.37.39 2) Johnstone Kemboi, Kenya, 1.39.36 3) Sergej Lukin, Ryssland, 1.39.49 4) Mustafa Mohamed, Hälle IF, 1.41.17 5) Sebastian Panga, Tanzania, 1.42.19 6) Jussi Utriainen, Finland, 1.43.15

And women - 1) Lena Gavelin, Trångsvikens IF, 1.58.39 2) Malin Ewerlöf-Krepp, Spårvägens FK, 2.00.50 3) Helena Olofsson, Rånsä 4H, 2.02.24 And the 10k race (women only) saw Norway’s underbar 5000 runner zip to a win - 1) Susanne Wigene, Norge, 33.27 2) Nancy Kiprop, Kenya, 34.05 3) Annemari Sandell, Finland, 34.38 Post race, “Jag har gjort en supersäsong.” You can guess what that translates to right? “I have had a super season!” That sounds like another Sherlock quote.

Number two in the 30k women‘s race is my old teammate Malin who was the first ever winner of the World Junior XC Champs when she was 16! Anyway the first runner is coached by my friend Richard, who used to run for the same team, and now works for the Swedish version of Runner‘s World.

Tadesse pulls out of the world half with a back injury…. Big blow for the champs!
Okay, here is throwing something to the wind -- Anyone in Paris October the 7th to the 10th?? Anyone know anything about running in Paris? Looks like the road trip might be loading up the suitcase yet again…. No direction home. On a serious note -- any tips certainly welcomed. Gauloises.com

Just as good as a wedding photo; here’s OzPaul & Toni, albeit a month before the wedding.
So I mentioned on the web about the Lime-honey, and here’s what Sabrina had to say, “forget the bastardized lime-infused honey and go get yourself some clover honey and roast it on some peaches (ok, substitute pears since peaches aren't really in season). you could serve this warm with vanilla ice cream dotted with a few candied almonds or walnuts.” Sounds rather spiffy.
From the Cartel? AP News….BOGOTA, Colombia - Naomi Campbell speaks for chum Kate Moss, who has some Coke issues right now. "Kate Moss is my friend ... I think it's like everybody is being bad to her," Naomi said whilst doing something model related in Bogota.
From Urban, over in the UK, “Managed to win the 10000m yesterday in 34:16, I am now the Middlesex 10000m champion!” Well done!
The race of the week will be on Saturday -- The French team for the 14th IAAF World Half Marathon Championships in Edmonton, Canada, 1 October 2005.
LAHSSINI El Hassan for the men, and for the women - GADI Hafida DAUNAY Christelle OLIVERAS Carmen DAHMANI Zahia, and lastly FARHOUN Hanan (dependent upon agreement by the Morocco).

Other news; The Simba on the race, “I could not even tell you who will be there. All I know is that I am going to win.” Bold words indeed.

In New York we also have a busy weekend - The Urban Team will be at the Corporate Challenge on Saturday, and then at the Grete’s Gallop on Sunday.
At Canada - Ed Whitlock, 74, of Milton, 3:02:37, & the NYRR’s own George Hirsch, 71, ran 3:31:55, in Berlin, the top US performance for 70+ this year - and a great result!

The other fast guys -- Simon Bor, KEN 2:11:57 CR, #2 Nelson Lebo, Ken 2:12:18 & #3 Wesley Ngetich, KEN 2:14:31... Kassahun Kabiso was there but DNF’d.

A Half with a speedier rep --Route du Vin Half-Marathon - Joan Ayaibei, KEN 1:12:36 & Wilson Chebet, KEN 1:02:19 were the winners, with #19. Alfred Shemweta, SWE 1:08:18 an old buddy of mine.
Paris-Versailles 16-K had Wesley Ochoro, KEN 48:55 winning with the old XC legend #6. Paulo Guerra, POR 49:33 still strong, and wimmin - Irina Permitina, RUS 56:09 was the top of the pack.
Czech former world triple jump champion Sarka Kasparkova has retired from the stage as Briton’s Jon Brown has retired from the World Champs Half, wisely after an off-par performance at the GNR, "In light of my upcoming marathon I feel I need more time to recover and prepare for my primary event."

On the left, running for URBAN ATHLETICS, Yelena Kanales -- the Number One track ranked Miler in the world.

Unfortunately she had a hamstring pull, but all of Urban was very proud to have this runner run for us… and we hope to see her back for the Millrose Games.

Well I gave the tip, and the tip came home - Craig Mottram was the bean in 3:49.9. Fun race to watch -- John Itati took out the pace in 54 for the first 400, he hit 1:53.9 for the 800m with Webb tucked behind, Webb then lead till the last 100m when Craig, who was never further than 1.5-secs back, slid by running a very smart race the whole way. I was on the lead truck for the races (alongside Paul McMullen who was doing a web cast)…. The fun part was going back up 5th Ave at 80-mph against the way traffic usually goes to make the next race. A couple of times I nearly fell out of the back as the gate was down.

In the women’s race it was Kim Smith (second left) who did the pace making duties, pulling the field along, congrats to 4:28.0 winner Carmen Douma-Hussar (far right).

Great race by Upper East Sider John Honerkamp in a classy 4:09 to win the Local Mile and Kate Irvin 04:50.1 for the women’s race that was rather slim on the ground, only two under five minutes, only four in the entire race! Zoomalong was there. Had a good chat with John Itati, he‘s doing the LV marathon… he was very happy to hit the pace -- the rest of the Lisa B. camp are up in Toronto for the marathon that was on Sunday with Ronald Mogaka going the distance.

Performance of the day for the locals? Of course CPTC’s Mr. Alston Brown of Jamaica - aged 56 running 4:46! Other mazing age group winners - Conor O'Driscoll 44-yrs old 4:28 of WTC, stunning, Witold Bialokur 70-yrs old - 6:00! John Bates 82-yrs old 7:11! Charlotte Rizzo 43-yrs young - 5:15, Mary Evans 46-yrs old 5:23, Mary Rosado 55 at 6:30, Ann Makoske aged 60 at 6:33, and of course Ginette Bedard 7:11 at the age of 72 - flipping awesome!

I met Isaya the skinny Kenyan, and whilst talking to him near the start everyone was clapping following some announcement, Isaya started too, so I said to him, “Why are we clapping?“ (As I joined in too), “I don’t know but it keeps me warm.” he replied. I saw Krafty Krebs talking lots of photos. Great quote by Peter Walsh, the owner of Coogan’s watching the men’s elite mile, “The one with the blue shorts.” They all had blue, nearly! Ah, you had to be there.

Mr. RLX the Prez and the pillar of Warren St, with Chubbs the Chairman of Urban. Well done to the Urbans -

Double Olympic champion Hicham El Guerrouj of Morocco, who has missed the entire 2005 season of competition has said he might extend his career to compete in the Beijing Games in 2008.… bad news for his competitors….
Admitting to the EPO. Up in Canada. Interesting story with the sob angle that did not leave us sobb-ING.. Sorry my mind is full of the ING NYC Marathon at the moment…
Eritrea’s Zersenay Tadesse, Olympic 10,000m bronze medallist, is certainly one, if not ‘the’ hot fave for the 14th IAAF World Half Championships in Edmonton, Canada, on Saturday 1 October 2005. The Simba is another hot fave! Go Simba!!
From Douglas the Pres of the Harriers, (formerly of the Reebok Racing Club), “I'm off to the Conestoga 10 mile trail race in Pennsylvania this week, supposed to be the toughest 10 mile race in America.” Sounds a hoot!
The New Las Vegas Marathon has plans for a "Run-Thru Wedding Chapel" at mile five -- the NYC Marathon’s gimmick is.. It is the world’s best marathon -- hard to top that.
On the Bridle Path ran into Shiney, and then into Craig Mottram.. With Peter Gambo from RW the day before it is better than a coffee shop -- speaking of those I met Neil Cook, the trainer of P. Diddy fame, in Starbucks and you’ll be glad to hear he is recovering well from his bike tumble.

Outside the starbucks was John Henwood who is thinking about the Hartford Half, then as we talked the best 60+ runner in the city right now, John Samsel came by…. Buena Vista East Side, I tell you--

From the IAAF, “Some people say that the training of Japanese women runners is crazy. And even European male runners who were training in St. Moritz at the same time where surprised when I did speed work on the track.” There was of course a reason for being surprised, because Noguchi did some REAL speed work. During this she ran 400 metres 45 times, covering 18k altogether. Her longest training runs were 40k.” She’s been stealing Anne K’s training!
Francis Ford Coppola is back in the news -- He will begin filming "Youth Without Youth" in Romania on Oct. 3. Starring Tim Roth. This man has a beautiful apartment in the old quarter of Paris, close to a nice little bar. A five-time Oscar winner this is the man with film.
Reminder -- any athlete registered as Urban Athletics let me know if you have a qualifying time to get inside the times needed for the Local Elite Corral at the start of the ING-NYC Marathon.

From Leo, “Well here we go, the urbans’ rock at the 5k race today; we came in 1st, 4th, 10th and 20th - Felipe Garcia won with 15 16, my time was 20 23 -- great race. Well done, to y’all!
Where is Kathrine Switzer? “We are in New Zealand at the moment doing the announcing (yesterday) at the World Mountain Running Champs. ...from 7Am until 9 PM...great stuff, Jono’ Wyatt won in a runaway--2 minutes on the Italians, huge crowds, great day. Kate McIlroy, also kiwi, outran her teammate Melissa Moon in another huge breakaway--hot stuff.” Speaking Kathrine think New Paltz, and up there on Sunday rummaging through the Fruit shop when a woman came up and asked the store attendant, “Where are your raspberries?”
To which he replied, “Across the road, out in the field and pick them!” To which the woman suddenly lost her appetite for the berries. Myself I got the peaches and some honey crunch apples -- pre-picked.
Congrats to Toni & OzPaul -- hitched out on Long Island rumor has it!

Get to know the last ten miles of the NYC Marathon course -- come and run the miles as a training run with us. Running as it should be - just turn up and run with others headed for New York Marathon success. Last year we had runners running from a 6:30 pace per mile to a 12-min mile pace -- all welcome. No sign up, no cost, just running. We may have a bag check facility at the Store on 92nd & Mad thus if you want to go there first and then do a jog down to the start (it would be 1 1/2m)….. The meeting place is on the greatest avenue on the globe - 1st Avenue, at 6oth St, We’ll meet at 8:20 and set off promptly. Perfcect timing as the following week we recommend you don’t run so many miles, and do the Poland Springs run instead inside Central Park.
On the exercise bike -- The Simba, working hard with NY in focus, The Simba is of course the peoples’ champion here in NYC. No elite athlete has put more time into NY than the Simba and next week she’ll be visiting schools up in the Bronx. She loves NYC and loves it when she runs the Mini and people come out to make her Our hometown hero… So if you are going to be supporting at the NYC marathon remember to cheer the loudest for The Simba!
An ingredient in green tea has prevented Alzheimer's disease like brain damage in mice, researchers report. The compound, called epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), decreased production of the protein beta-amyloid, which accumulates in the brains of Alzheimer's patients and causes nerve damage and memory loss. -- If you are a mouse, don’t forget this news clip…
Crime squads on dope. “Between 1997 and 2000 the amount of the blood-booster erythropoietin (EPO) sold in Italy doubled even though the number of prescribed kidney patients, for whom the drug was originally developed, remained roughly the same.” Thanks to Jeff for the link.
The Real Berlin Marathon on Sunday has the Olympic Champ going for a fast time, eventually she plans attacking the world record. But Noguchi is realistic about the chances of getting to planet 2:15,and will not attempt it yet! Wise move!
From the Queen of the NYRR, “Now just days away, the Continental Airlines Fifth Avenue Mile Powered by Four Minutes, an ESPN2 Film, has attracted thousands of runners, including some of the world’s fastest milers--like Alan Webb, Craig Mottram, and Carrie Tollefson--who are all gunning for a whopping $30,000 in prize money. Can't make it to New York this weekend? Tune into ESPNEWS on race day (Saturday, September 24) at 1:45 p.m. for live televised coverage of the men's professional race. With a $10,000 bonus and a 24-year-old course record on the line, this race is gearing up to be one of the most exciting Fifth Avenue Miles to date.”
Costanza received a letter of Fan mail in the post today, and here it is, Anil asked that I added his name in there -- why we are not sure -- everyone knows Costanza is the Shoe-Meister of NYC… he was not too happy when I called him the Mascot, so we’ll forget that one.
Pierre the Pusher is having a party next week, the night before Grete’s -- I have never made it to any of his parties over the past five years, so the odds are I won’t make this one either.
Down on the track, “I saw this thing in the newspaper yesterday: the state of California has initiated a law suit to make potato chip manufacturers put a warning label on their packaging saying that they contain a cancerous agent - acrylamide. It's also used for sewage treatment!” Thanks to Anne (flippin flying as always), now I wonder which nutritionist might have had potato chips in their handbag? Danny the Dollarman came down and really gave a good session. Cara too - when we could stop her. Chris C was steaming along. And Stan too with Moses call me consistent. Kevin the Commander back on track but with a touch of asthma.

Peter2 in purple, “it’s my gym wear!” Jeff & Rick focusing well on Philly. Jamie who was coached by Jim G before up in CT - small world. Paul C running a fine session, with Todd too - in split decisions. Yuen giving a good effort & blood (well that was earlier in the day). Eric doing great - progressing strongly, as was Vanessa with Cristina on her heels. Ivar made it down and ran a great set of miles, and welcome down to Heather after a long hiatus, “Forgotten how much fun the track is!” Too right! WE have a hoot always!

AnneG on the money and ran a great bonus 400m Michael S worked hard and was rewarded, Paul K too -never complains! Trackman (aka DavidP) was scooting along on pace with Randi on his heels. Paola & Tracey were flying in tandem nicely. Luis - welcome! And Luiz; every lap remained the same even as the rest diminished mile by mile! Randy also hitting yearly PR‘s as the night wore on, & Sabrina the bean booming along.

We’ll be super happy if they turn the lights on down at the track as it is dark down there now -- I had three watches, four groups, and had to try and spot who was who before trying to look down at the dark watches, and subtract thirty seconds off the third watch to time the fourth group, whom I had to remember who was in the 3rd and who was in the fourth….the mind boggles. I suppose it was pay back for my much appreciated witty comment, “Okay, one mile done, nearly finished, four and a half miles to go.”

Meanwhile tonight OzPaul, Anil, & Chubby were missing -- it was Ozpaul‘s stag night and they were off to some strip club - Yuck. Whatever floats your boat.

Levitation methods when believing you can fly. AS most runners do. Here Werkenesh Kidane who has won a truck load of championship medals is grounded.
Some exciting names in the men’s field at Chicago -- Nearly all Kenyans expected to fill the first few places - but this man may challenge that power-land; Dejene Berhanu, ETH who was #2 at the GNR “Anything under 2:10 will be very good for me.” We think he should better that with his 59:37 1/2M PR.. But who knows…
The rest? Boston Champ 04 Timothy Cherigat, KEN, The best of the USA Alan Culpepper, USA, was second in Rotterdam 1/2m Sub 60 - Patrick Ivuti, KEN, #3 in NYC 03 Laban Kipkemboi, KEN, a happening man, 2:06 - William Kipsang, KEN, The legend - Paul Koech, KEN, Mr 2:04 though not in the best shape - Sammy Korir, KEN, running well in the shorter races James Kwambai, KEN, determined to get back to his 2:06 form Felix Limo, KEN, Ben Maiyo, KEN, 2:06 Daniel Njenga, KEN, Legend #2 in the pack - a very exciting debut - Thomas Nyariki, KEN, struggled with injuries earlier this year Evans Rutto, KEN. Of course the sad news is that The Khannouch is out with injury issues, a big loss to the race.
The 2006 cross country championships in Fukuoka, Japan will be the last to include the short races. From thereon it will be just the long course. The short race never took off in the fashion it was expected. So next year will the last names added…. Also the same goes for the World Half this year -- something will be new next year from the IAAF.
The Baby Faced Assassin road show conclusion -- Tirunesh Dibaba highlights the Daegu, Korea track meet on Friday 23 September, one of the last races of the season.
At the clinic last night --loads of good questions, nice people and a fun time… now I happened to be looking in the handbag of Lauren the nutritionist because she was trying to hide some snacks in there… the day’s revelation, “What the nutritionists eat!” heh heh. Well should I reveal or not, I mean I was very surprised in fact right now I just fell off my seat laughing so much! Anyway Congrats to Lauren as she is expecting a nipper in the spring.. & that was the explanation for the unhealthy stuff! Zoomalong was also talking with us, I must get over to the W-side to have bagels with her soon -- always great to see her.

ING New York City Marathon Prep Clinic - tonight - check the www.nyrr.org for details of this sooper-dooper info night... and for NYRR members it is gratis.
Honey update - the lime is barely noticeable, not a good mixer, next time I am going for the ginger.
Brick lane Bagel shop -- in London? Are you kidding me? They may be the best bagels in London, but what is that saying?? Never had a good bagel in Europe to date, and yep I have done the trying and testing a few times… New York City has the best, period. Then in other US Cities you can get
Kenya field’s a so-so squad for the World Half --Wilson Kebenei, James Mwangi, Gilbert Okari, Paul Kimugul and Julius Kibet. And Susan Chepekemei, Selina Kosgei and Caroline Cheptanui.
Further results from Yonkers - In #2 was Rafael Veras of Super Runners Store, 2:31 -- a great time for this ‘mountain’ run. Felipe Garcia was 4th in 2:39, and Danny ‘the Dollarman’ Campos 2:50 -- I can hear the customers at the store, “Danny, you told us you were going to run sub 2:30??”
Questioning the EPO?
As much as I love Miles Davis I hate listening to him in the mornings when I have things to do -- as he sends me into a hazy-way-zee off the focus mode. I noted that Folgers are also going into chocolate coffee -- they should work on the essentials first, like mimicking starbucks.. on that note Starbucks & Simba will be in town next weekend!
Paul Tergat remains hopeful of competing in the BUPA Great South Run on 9 October in Portsmouth despite a recent hamstring injury that zapped him from the GNR on Sunday past. Hendrick Ramaala will be lining up too there, before the two meet in NYC! and, we should mention that Tulu will be there too! This event is of course after the World Half Marathon Champs that she is running. The Simba is tapering right now, as we speak, to do her first half of the year -- remember she is yet to be defeated on the roads. Starbucks tells us that his tan is getting pretty damn dark because of all the hours he is spending out there running - great to hear! He actually ran the marathon a few years back, and Hilda Kibet comes to the US of A soon after the World Champs to help Lornah with the training as she gets into the final month.

The winning Dude. Running down a dream. At the race on Saturday.

Here’s a Classic quote, Don Roberts, “So I was feeling good as I had done a 40-miler, doing the second twenty faster” (when training for the London to Brighton 54-mile race), and this man told me, “40?? The race begins at 40, and indeed it did!” Don’s first therapist? “this man ran 65-miles on Saturday, 65 on Sunday, and 65 on Monday -- it was Labor Day weekend.” Of course he was talking about a gentleman who was a couple of seats down - Ted Corbitt. All this and more at the NYRR AGM last night -- I think I knew everyone in the room -- all 25 of us! The Mayor of Van Cortlandt Park was there, he also had done the London Brighton race that talked about year, Mike Frankfurt, then George Hirsch who will be running Berlin on Sunday was there. Of course the Queen of the NYRR, Mary Wittenberg. Snapper Don was there - snapping as usual, and Peter Roth, the man who married Deena from Drossin to Kastor a couple of years ago -- poor Peter had broken his ribs whilst cycling last week… what else -- wel the bad news is I wanted to pick up a pizza on thwe way home, and I completely forgot until I was putting the key in the door - yargh!

The 5th Avenue Mile is a-coming up this weekend, and in the first time in an age it will be a world class event. Also a very quick marathon qualifier, I think anyway. The Favs - Craig Mottram, Anthony Famiglietti (home town hero), Elkanah Angwenyi (the dark horse to win), Rui Silva (the stinger), Kevin Sullivan, Isaac Viciosa (the road ace), and Alan Webb.. And the wimmin’s field a little less deep, but here are the two favs - Jen Toomey and Yelena Kanales, and the outsider Lindsey Gallo.

Ophs I forgot to talk about the AGM - two main points, the direction of the club - very healthy, for e.g. 5-yrs ago no school kids were helped/serviced by the NYRR club, today it is 7,000 per week! The Projection for Mary, “100,000 in thirty years!” and a note on the voting - a fab $15,000 has been saved by the new online voting (way to go), and don’t say it was inconvenient (I know the pdf was a pain), but you could also have filled in a ballot at the club for the last month, but this online is superb as 89% of the 39,000 members have an email address…

Down that Avenue the next club event, at the same location between 2nd & 3rd Aves on 76th is the ING-NYC clinic - you should go, you will learn SO much on running! I always do.

Speaking avenues -- I was down in Café Habanna yesterday, having lunch with a friend (can I recommend the sweet corn for starters that is roasted on the cob and rolled in parmesan) anyway following which I passed a food shop that I really like down there in Nolita and thought, “Full up but just let me check. When I happened to notice that their mustard, French, was on sale. A fav of mine, so I bought two big jars and noticed also that the Lime Honey from Germany looked rather tasty, so I left the shop with two kilos in a paper bag. So I was cycling up 1st Ave trying to avoid all the numerous potholes when ‘bam’ the obvious happened!

The bag broke, even though it was a natty string handled jobbies, I cringed as the three jars and also my wallet and a pile of Cds flew down onto the road. Amazingly nothing broke! Those thick glass jars huh. So now I had to pedal with one hand holding my bunch of keys, my wallet, and a stack of CD’s and the handlebar whilst in the other hand I had the honey, and tucked under my arm I had the mustard…. Now I was really looking out for potholes! At the united nations building they diverted the traffic for some security thing, and I had to go on the dual underpass (as I was too lazy to cross the avenue and cycle over on the side walk).. So I start going down the underpass (that is about five blocks long and where the cars absolutely fly through because there are no police) and I suddenly realize it is pitch black down there -- the underground street lamps are not working!

This is bad on two scores - firstly as a car driver you just do not expect to find a bike down there, and secondly I was wearing my Johnny Blackglu sunglasses that are made for brilliant sunlight -- I could not see a flippin thing! And of course I could not take my shades off as my hands were over full, and could not stop as there was no lane to stop in! I thought I was sure fire road kill.. Just imagine, found in a pulp & pap of lime honey and Dijon mustard.

Odds n Bobs - At Philly #15. John Itati, KEN 1:05:26 - a former 5th Ave mile winner, and will be a pacemaker on Saturday… and #12. Anne Kugler, New York, NY 1:15:57 official time! Faster than the 1:16 we reported yesterday.

Ever young Tulu - “I hope to still challenge Paula in future years," and we believe she will… still going strong, a 67:03 1/2Marathon a month after a marathon 4th place in the world champs is pretty damn impressive.
"I work hard, extremely hard, and it's frustrating to me that people think you can't do it without cheating.” Craig, the man of the moment Mottram.
In the mailbag, another duathlete I am coaching(!), “Hi, Toby! it seems the speed sessions on Wed. are paying off... I just need to improve more on the bike.. I did my best race ever yesterday, a sprint duathlon in Central Park…” Congrats to the Basqueman Jose! He had the FASTEST 1st run split, and 2nd fastest 2nd run split.
Fast running in Sweden as the runner’s warm up for the World’s biggest XC - Lidingoloppet -- Of note Mustafa is a Swede (he has lived in Sweden all his life and is a sub 8:20 steeplechaser… Koech has a pretty famous father in that event… Nancy is the woman we talked about lots in regards to the HATC camp (and is on the Kenya photos book), and Lena will be running NYC Marathon this fall -

A clean sweep for WTC! Yonkers Marathon - Retta Feyissa, WTC Bronx, NY (ETH), 2:28:35 $850. WOMEN - Jill Vollweiler, 37, Purchase, NY, 2:55:12 $850. & a day after his Central Park win the top local -- 21.1 km. MEN - Abraham Assefa, WTC/ETH, 1:06:46 $300. WOMEN - Leteyesus Berje, WTC/ETH, 1:21:53 $300
Ozpaul sent me a note, and I got this one from George H in England, thanks, “Apart from a brilliant performance from Zersenay Tadesse, the Great North Run held yesterday will probably be remembered for the unfortunate deaths of 4 participants. All were men, who I believe died of suspected Heart Attacks at different stages of the race. The weather was unseasonably warm and possibly a contributory factor. Excellent weather for spectators, but far from ideal for participants. I chose to spectate at the 5 mile mark which was only a few minute drives from my house. Even at this early stage in the race I saw quite a few participants who were struggling with the heat (and/or lack of sufficient training). Races in the UK, such as the Great North Run and London Marathon seem to have a lot more people who run in fancy dress than any event I have participated in in New York. Some of the outfits must weigh quite a bit and probably replicate the effects of a sauna. About £10 million would have been raised for various charities by participants in the race.”

Yes when you get 50,000 people in the same area the chances are that a couple will die, sadly.

09/19
One of the nicest men in the sport of marathon running - Mr. Hugh Jones and his family when we were shopping for a cup of tea in Brooklyn. I could fill these pages with stories of what a gentleman Hugh is, but here’s a snap of him & Cheryl, and their family.
Today, tonight - the NYRR AGM at the RW PS school, On 76th between 2nd & 3rd Ave.

At the races: Congrats to Abraham Assefa WTC 19:05 & Kathy Martin, 24:26 Saturday was Leg One of The Chubby Boss Vs Danny the Dollarman… Chubbs has promised to slay the dollar man in one of the next five match-ups. The gun goes off and Chubbs races off with the leaders… He has upped the bet, to double or nothing (“crazy!”). Going up CatHill it looks like it may be the day, unless we recall that we are only ½-mile into the race.. The Dollarman comes sliding by as the leaders disappear into a different city as far as we are concerned. Shiney is running in the pack, Chubbs had offered him the latest singlet but Shiney prefers to keep the red old one, “Wales y’know” - I did, maybe others not. Dollarman Danny puts in a surge, he would later say, “I tried to run with Chubbs for a while, but he was too slow!” and makes distance that can not be made up. The distance grew to ‘outta sight…’ and now Chubbs has only four more chances to recoup his $500. OzPaul, on hearing of the bet, “I wonder if he’d bet anything with me?? I could do with a 500 or two…. Anyway I should be careful not to say too much as I know it‘ll be repeated on the website” On that note Costanza said, “Better not to say the thing about Dollarman saying Chubbs was too slow else he’ll be miserable all day…” too late - Chubbs had already, via the grape, heard, “Ha, I’ll be back, faster. Today was my warm up!”
Congrats to the Front Runners NY & Moving Comfort NY who scooped the team awards. Back at the store Anil meanwhile reading the paper did not glance up and moaned that the morning’s run for him, 21-miles, was pretty damn far. He’s training for NYC, as is Dollarman… but Costanza is getting ready for the Cyclo races…. And drinking vitamin red coke -- a new formula…. Anyway back to the race site --

Post race, Chucky Martin, “Has a 53-yr old woman ever won a race in Central Park??” Referring to the splendid result that his wife Kathy had just produced! Chuck, who knows a thing or two about a good coffeehouse was rightly proud of Kathy’s latest, of so many, super dooper performances.

Congrats to the Urbanosos - called yuppies in some circles, labeled scallywags by others:
CAMPOS DANIEL CHASTON MATT MACARI JERRY R DARCY DAVID MARGULIES DENISE SHUFRO LEE MARGULIES MICHAEL CHIN DENNY LAMARCA-MEHIGAN MIA CHESLIK THOMAS.

The Dollarman is cleaning Chubby out - however Adam tells us that he won a soccer bet against the Dollarman last week, but the Dollarman paid him with new running shoes instead of cash, when Mexico lost to the USA.

Congrats also to Sherri who blasted under 7-min miling yet again for the 5k in NJ over the weekend! Anne K who smashed her half marathon PR in Philadelphia - 12th overall and won her age group and ran 1:16:00 -- ONLY OZ-paul has run faster in Urban this year(!) and her net time was 4-seconds faster, and also to Lee (my duathlete athlete) who is off to represent the US of A this Sunday in Oz-land in the world champs.
You know you are not in NYC when you pass ‘indoor parking 75-cents first hour’ - that is the going rate for downtown Springfield. My talk was fun and a hoot, a great receptive audience, and they had a pot luck food night so the table was very impressive (it was a women‘s running club). I stayed at the Sheraton who oddly had a Rolls Royce in the lobby… hm, I would have preferred a coffee machine…. But I did appreciate the Jacuzzi tub in the bath room (somehow I got an upgrade to a club level suite).

Speaking travel how annoying is it that people on trains shout down their cellphone.. I mea I am relaxing, eating a bagel, reading a magazine when “How ya doing?” at 110-decibels, everyone of course looks round, and some woman is just phoning up a buddy, then she screams, “So, I had the MRI…” enough, enough. Kind’ve wishing for background music to drown out the drones.

Anyway that was up in MA, and on Sunday I found myself waking up in CT… at the ungodly hour of 05:30 wondering what the heck am I doing here? Well I did a long run out there and once again I must praise Marty S of Hitek racing & Jim Gerwick for great post run food, Great course markings, and what else….. Great weather! I was rather surprised not to see Martha Stewart though when passing through Westport with my eyes peeled, though I did see a cat with a pink ribbon round its neck that could have possibly belonged to Ms Stewart. Apparently Paul Newman lives there too - but we did not see him either, no marks for celeb spotting. Not that I would recognize them anyway!

“Fish oil, garlic and a dramatic reduction on the consumption of fats and red meats is my plan.” All this so TGV can do his crazy race.
ING New York City Marathon Prep Clinic Running this year’s ING New York City Marathon or another fall marathon? Join the experts on Wednesday, September 21, at 6:30 p.m., for a pre-race discussion on preparation, strategy, and more. The clinic is geared especially for marathon participants but is open (and free) to all NYRR members, $5 for non-members.
Ukraine's Ivan Heshko won the Great North Mile in Newcastle on Saturday. Portugal's Rui Silva second and Britain's Michael East into third. Yikes -- Accidents on Kenya's pot-holed roads kill about 3 000 people a year - more than eight a day - in a country that reportedly has one of the world's highest traffic death rates.

Good luck to Deena running in Philly on Sunday, also to all local runners going out there too!

Paul Tergat has pulled out of Sunday's Great North Run because of injury. Sonia O'Sullivan, has made a late entry but will run just as a training run “A jog”. Worries obviously if Paul will be on par for NYC! Let’s hope so.

A big thanks to all ho sent in nice notes about the voting; very much appreciated.

Delta & NWA file for bankruptcy… too bad for FF miles!
At the Shanghai Golden Grand Prix. Chow Tai Fook, a well-known jewelry retailer in China, will provide golden dragon pendants made of pure gold to the champion of each event at Saturday’s event. We guess that Kenenisa Bekele and Meseret Defar of Ethiopia Will be racing themselves to wins in the 3k & 5k -- one wonders is this thew track with the unbelievable Chinese world record ‘93 times?
A truly mad three year old.. Who on the second pic looks like a well developed 3-yr old… marathon ruuner. One thing is for sure, I‘ll bet this boy never runs well as a senior, he‘ll be worn out by the age of ten.

Geb* passed the 15k mark faster than Limo’s record when running his 10-miler 10-days ago.
The New Jersey Nets moved three steps and a travel closer to making a new home in Brooklyn when the Metropolitan Transportation Authority voted to sell an 8.3-acre rail-yard to team owner and real-estate developer Bruce Ratner. Games ‘plan’ to start in Brooklyn - November 2008... The Brooklyn Nets? Need a name change we think!
Down on the track - Welcome return of Sir Alec, and a tough effort he gave. Eric too was giving it a good push, Jonathan & Tom on the injury hit list, Lissy back powering, Vanessa flying along, Cristina looking super smooth, Jose looking like a sprinter, Anne & Luiz working well, Gary the Rocket(!), Rick hanging tough and proving he knows that he has the gears, Cruiser muscling the arms well down the homestretch, Anil blowing hot and cold.

Ozpaul as the session went on looked better and better getting up on his toes, Jamie showing determination & spirit, DavidP chiseling well, Queen Diane - glad to have her back, Michelle running with good talent, Randy getting ready to lose the last few pounds before Chicago, Robin in the black H blending into the night (lights we need), Masterblaster who blasted the Tune-up absolutely flying on the last mile, Randi - powered by apricot liquor, Suneet - on ribena giving his usual 110%, and Paul K arrived late but stayed late to complete - an inspiration, like all the guys!

Coming to Springfield -- me, I am off down there on Thursday to give a talk to a running club who have been kind enough to donate shoes for the Shoe4africa thing... so I'm off up to Pioneer Running Club, but hope to reappear for the race in Central Park on Saturday morning, the health & wealth thingey, or mind and something I think it is called. Chubbs tells me that he is fit and in form for the race, so he'll be there too.. what am I going to talk about? Flipperty Gibbets... on that note the following Wednesday will be the next big NYRR Marathon clinic at the Public School - see ya there....
“Have had the Rift Valley Blend from Starbucks yet? If you haven't, it is to die for. It's an ultra bold coffee, yet it's a very rich flavor and not bitter.” From trav who won $100 in a race over the weekend, enough to buy a few pounds of the magic bean.
Germany’s Interior Minister Otto Schily revealed Monday that the state-run compensation fund had concluded its case into the doping victims of former East Germany (GDR). The fund, set up in 2002, has awarded 10,400 euros to 193 former athletes from the GDR who suffered lasting physical and mental damage as a result of the state-run drug programme in former East Germany.” Mostly mixed feelings on this one - victims? What about the athletes who ranthe races without the drugs, were they not victims? Most of the athletes from the ’system’ countries tend to keep on taking the medicine after they leave the system.. Victims? I remember speaking to one such victim, and he said, “It was take the pills or get off the program. Yes there was a choice, but we wanted to be athletes.” Anyway thanks to Jeff for the link.
Sad to see that Kidane is not in the team, to date, of the Ethiopian squad for the 13th IAAF World Half Marathon Championships in Edmonton, Canada. A great race I am sure she’ll run though this weekend in the GNR when she lines up against Catherine the Great… Meanwhile Adere pulls out of the WC 1/2M but is till in the field for the GNR…odd.

Sileshi Sihine and Abebe Dinkessa are the two big men’s names for the national team, yet last year’s winner and CR holder Dereje is not in the Ethio-team…

In the mailbag from Bob A. from Urban, and used to be a Wedza runner - “In other news, Ethan and David Zlotchew and I are running Chicago in 26 days. We've been using the training program you put together for me a couple of years ago. In fact, this morning was the dreaded 4 x 12' / 1.5'.” Thanks to Bob, Ethan, & David for some Shoes!

Deena Kastor aiming for sub-2:20 at the Chicago Marathon will run the flat and fast Philadelphia Distance Run on Saturday - I’d guess she needs a 67:20‘s-min or better performance to put her on line for Sub 2:20 next month.
At the Rotterdam Half - #16. Sammy Korir, KEN 1:05:23 not looking in the best of shape right now.. Even for training he should be faster, news was that he was racing as well.
At the Cologne Marathon - 1. Joseph Kadon, KEN 2:11:55 #2. Peter Chemei, KEN 2:12:44 #3. Habte Jifar, ETH 2:13:31(brother to Tesfaye the 2:06 man) ….#7. Mark Yatich, KEN 2:24:03 & Women - #1 Claudia Dreher, GER 2:31:43
And in the Italian Half-Marathon Championships @ Recanati - the fastest Italians were Fabio Mascheroni, ITA 1:04:58 Bruna Genovese, ITA 1:14:40 who is trained by the famous Bettoil.
Taganka Running Festival in Moscow #1 Sergey Lebed (UKR) 28:22 and a name from the past #5. Andrey Kuznetsov 30:13, still running strong! No women’s event there.
In Central Park this weekend the Mind & Fitness Four Miler -- a nice shorty after all the longs that have been going on. The list of sponsors on the bib is rather strange - many, many, but too tiny to see clearly. Remember you can drop off your new race shirt for the RED CROSS en site at the race pick up.
At the Club Council -- I was super dooper happy it was a short meeting as the need for speed was never greater than my ambition to get home to receive a certain international phonecall.. that I made by seconds. Well news from that meeting - concerning trhe marathon - the local elite corral: "An honor system" so please only notify your team captains if you can run under 2:50 for the men, and 3:45 for the women. A 3:10 allowance for masters men with a 10-minute increment per aging decade, but no allowances for master's women - it is 3:45 or bust. If you have a half time of 1:20 men 1:45 women (1:30 men) you may also get in the corral.

Also the NYRR elite 5th Ave mile - if you are a 4:25 man or faster, and a 4:55 women they have a special race that will start just before the Invitational International event with $400, 200, 100 prize dollars and 70,000 air miles for the winner. Apply to Webman Sam at the NYRR if you think you should be invited asap as the field is limited! This is not the same event as the fastest race on the day, but you must contact Sam asap to "In it to win it." Great idea.

Ophs before I forget (yeah I cut all other parts, though I did have a nice natter with Nich) Prospect Park is having a race on Thanksgiving Morning - a 5-miler, first three scored only, and home made apple pies as prizes.. I can recommend this race and when I ran they gave out Pumpkin Pies that were anything but homemade so they have now upgraded the one thing that needed upgrading to make this a magic meet. Mark your calenders now!

Thanks to my S. American expert Jorge from CT, "Brazilian Rómulo Wagner Da Silva and colombian Bertha Sánchez won the 18th Medellin Half Marathon yesterday. 18000 runners participated of the race. My lip is split, it is very painful - when I laugh it opens the wound again, so I try not to laugh. When I eat too big a slice… you get the picture, anyway when I run hard and screw up my face my lip splits too.. So I was deciding not to do any of that, and tried to run relaxed… anyway that was until I found myself hanging on in the year’s greatest interval session -- I gave up doing intervals in 2001 bar some sporadic efforts in the last few years of some try’s to get back moving again…

Well on Saturday I did my second interval session of the year, the last being a nice 5 x 1000m this summer (have been doing tempos earlier) -- this one was a little longer, though a shorter distance - 500m…. After interval #12 I didn’t want to count, after #18 I was getting happy, at #20 I was like ‘Yeehar, making progress!’ At #34 I stumbled down a crack in the road and pulled the bad leg, #35 I thought, damn, have not come this far not to finish, at #39 I thought it was 37, and at #40 it was done. Even with a scant 58’ average recovery this session took all morning! Kudos to the Dolphin runna who blew through the session like a golf ball off Tiger’s Iron. At Absolute Bagels buying the cinnamons I spotted a vitamin water called Rescue - seemed fitting. Meanwhile over in Boulder at 8400-ft the Simba completed another 3-hr run… anyway I must have been grimacing as I split my lip -- where’s that dead fish pose when you need it?
Furthermore we hear that Cara did an excellent pace run along the West Side too!

Sunday it was up to the blackberry picking farm area of New Paltz (where Kathrine Switzer has just bought a house) for a 2-hr easy afternoon run -- halfway up this hill that lasted forever I was trying to think how the word easy fitted into 'steep'. A mountain -- the nice news was that it was deserted out there. Beautiful running trails and not a running soul in sight! After days of Central Park that was quite a relief.

Derartu Tulu, perhaps the world's greatest-ever woman's distance runner, is returning to Portsmouth for the BUPA Great South Run on October 9 after running the GNR and the world half! She can do all three, as tough as a nut!
"I'm a soldier, yeah baby, and I'm a gangster too!" Tyree Washington - winning the 400m in 44:51 at the World IAAF Gala. Bernard Lagat was flying - running the final mile of the 3000m like a miler - in 3:54! 7:38 for the win.

Meseret Defar, 14:45, beats the injured Dibaba aka The Baby Faced Assassin, 14:46, as Mizuno TC go 1-2,and Adere 14:46 wraps up the podium for Ethiopia in the women’s 5000m. Maryam Yusuf Jamal of Ethiopia, ophs Bahrain, was the only woman under 4-mins in 3:50 taking the 1500m, she has run a 1:11 half marathon too! Tomashova was #2 in 4:00, Paul Koech won the steeple in 8:07 as Shaheen stayed away, and Doris of Uganda won the women’s event in a runaway 9:21 polishing off her dominant season….Day Two - Ivan Heshko took the 1500m in 3:33:50 5/100th in front of Bernard trying for the double,, Rui Silva ran 3:50 - I‘m striking him off my list of favs for the 5th Ave mile as something is obviously wrong with him, it has now been a string of poor races…. The men‘s 5000- Sihine S won in a 13:39 time which is great for the mortals, but rather sluggish - Boniface Kiprop was next to finish in 13:40.… Wilfrd Bungei took the 800m in 1:47 - every one was just running for the $$positions$$.

Defar, 8:47, pulled out the double winning the 3k from Burika of Ethiopia by a second. Here‘s a fast time - W800- Calatayud Zulia 1:59.07 of Cuba from Hasna Benhassa 1:59:86

Houston Marathon officials Friday announced that Chevron is the new title sponsor of the annual event. A great January marathon.
British team for the World ½ pushing out the boat on developing the talent, not- Jon Brown Sheffield AC the only male, and Mara Yamauchi Harrow AC Hayley Haining City of Glasgow AC Debbie Mason Tipton Harriers Susan Partridge City of Glasgow AC La Femmes.
Scotland, alike England, is also planning early for the Commonwealth Games in March by accepting team applications - the most famous distance runner name in there - going for the 5000m/10,000m - Kathy Butler (Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow).
Perfect weather - I remember when I raced this event a few years ago it was stinking hot and humid in August, hm, I remember my sunglasses fogged up so the entire third loop I did not see anything (slight exaggeration). It was the time when the photographers wanted to get some shots for something and as I was doing something for FOX before the gun asked me if I could run clear of the pack in the first mile as they‘d sit in the lead car for the first mile. Well this was back in the day when I was able to oblige… So the gun goes off, and so does Alem Kahsay pushing me and pushing me to a 4:50 first mile before he dropped off and out of the race leaving me with the next 17-miles -- ha, I wish I had my split for the last mile. Anyway the photos got taken: At the Tune-Up Congrats to John Henwood 1:37:20 & Kathleen Coughlin 37 MCNY NY 1:58:22, other podiums - Vincent Mulvey 1:37:54 & Matt Downin 28 NEWB NJ 1:37:55 who must have just been clocking a training run… the top master’s - *Christina Bilsky* 41 MCNY NY 2:06:41 & Antonio Martinez 41 WSX NY 1:48:14 A note on Cristina who hopefully will have a super run at Chicago - she, and husband Mark, are huge helpers to Shoe4Africa and many other projects running related in this city, an angel!

An exciting race for the Newcastle race series on Saturday - Saif Saaeed Shaheen, Craig Mottram, and Eliud Kipchoge in BUPA 3,000m Road Race. The femme version - Kenyan Isabella Ochichi, Briton Jo Pavey, American Amy Rudolph, and Kim Smith of New Zealand.

Of course this is an ancillary event to the Half Marathon, and we hear from Nic Bideau that Craig is in great form. So I am going on record now as saying - Craig Mottram will win the 5th Ave mile for my September prediction. My July prediction was that Wanjru would get the record….

Etiquette @ a restaurant - I read a whole article about how terribly wrong it was to ask for a diet coke at breakfast at the Carlyle, how the hoteliers frown on you for such things -- reminds me of a time in New York when I was at the Boathouse, the dessert menu looked like a stomach pump recycle for the Atkins commercials, I was craving something healthy so I asked for a plain banana.
“Sir, we do not serve (gasp, sigh, groan) plain bananas.” So then I pointed out that they had something fried with a banana and a liquor, so could I just have not the fruit sans everything else.
“We simply could not (another Shakesperian moment of gestures) bring a banana to your table.”

Go figure, and to think I was holding out in the dinner stage from asking for a bagel. Better to eat at home, least you get what you want!

Kenenisa Bekele of Ethiopia and Yelena Isinbayeva of Russia won the IAAF’s men’s and women’s 2005 Athletes of the Year. Justin Gatlin and Tirunesh Dibaba won the awards for the Performances of the Year.
The Largest payday in the history of women’s sports - Kim Clijsters won $2.2-million at the US Open.... And $130,000 on the line in the NYC November women's marathon is a big step too as the most money paid out to a woman for a one day sporting event... or am I just guessing here?

Simon Wanjiru sets a New Half Marathon World Record in Rotterdam by one second - 59:16!! Paul Tergat had the IAAF acepted record from Milano 1998 of 59:17 although he has run faster on aided courses. revenge next week at the GNR? Patrick Ivuti also was under the hour. Starbucks sent us a report from in the blackberry car....
New York City Sunday - Remembered. RIP to those who died back in 2001. I don’t think any New Yorker who was in the city that day will ever forget that day.
Fancy running in the Ocean to Sound Relay on Long Island, Sept. 25th? If you want to go for it with a fun team let me know & I'll put you in touch with a team that always run well there, with fun as a priority!
World-Record-Holder Paul Tergat to Run the ING New York City Marathon 2005!

Tomorrow - the Tune up in Central Park. I have found that if you do this one you will complete the big one in November (given the flatter course and the 8-weeks to train in). Loadsa people doing it, and a lot of nice groups going for the idea of finishing off with a fast marathon pace last lap. Sign up at the Road Runners and get 18-miles done with great support, camadarie, and the usual super NYRR service.
Rashid Ramzi (BRN), Daniel Kipchirchir Komen (KEN) and Bernard Lagat (USA) line up for the most exciting 1500m duels of the summer at the World IAAF Finals. My money is on Mr. Lagat - for my money the best in the world now El G has slipped off the slide.
SuperCuts a local hairdresser - I don’t think they are doing so well, certainly not off my patronage, but always outside the store, or would they call it a boutique? Anyway yesterday they were giving out samples and offering a cut of $2 off each hair job. When home I looked at the samples, I could not even tell what they were for - a mean what is Hair Balancer? A shampoo, or a conditioner, a dye? Hair vibes - I’m not putting this junk on my head - what is wrong with good old fashioned words that actually mean something -- like wall paper, you can’t go wrong there! Like a gasoline attendant now has overalls with ‘Gas Technician’ - what is wrong with Gasoline Pumper? Are we getting technical advise now?
The Madison group did fine last night, a few moans about the last mile tagged on to the workout but nobody asked what the full workout was - yahhh! Chris C of ML pushed the lights back to NJ on that last mile & was not too shabby on the 2's either, and following him was a fine troop - Parks flying, Moses needs to cut back a touch, Stan great - huge night, Adam -- "nothing left, but the last mile was a nice touch" - and he gave 110%, Michael had turbo gears when he used it, Carrie with a burst blister "good marathon training", Jen looking strong, Mary perfect form, Traci, Toni really doing well, Kathy hanging in with knee pain, limping Lynn poor thing, Todd, am I forgetting anyone? Chubby is waiting for his tests, still ill, and Danny the Dollarman and Anil were off on an easy run - and needing it - a lot of worn down faces.
Sad email from Michelle B. who is super busy tying up loose ends before leaving Manhattan for good - Melbourne's gain. Stay in touch.
In the doubles semi finals of the US Open - Anna-Lena Groenefeld/Martina Navratilova (7)
Kudos to the NYRR - today when you entered the Tune Up you could donate your t shirt to the Red Cross fund, great idea-- straight in there, I was surprised how many people chose not to.
David Liverpool Lucas, “most people think I'm too skinny!!!” In his farewell speech getting ready for the Clash in London. All I suggested was 10-pounds, that was all!

The defending Commonwealth 5,000m champion, "I have asked to be named for the 5,000m and 10,000m, but I will not do both," Paula radcliffe said. Talking about her commitments for next March. We guess it’ll be the 5000m, considering that there are not three British girls in either event pushing for places we think it more than fair that she should get a certain spot in any event she chooses - where else is Britain going to get distance medals from if not from Paula?

Dame Kelly, "I want to go there to win," she said of the Melbourne games. "There would be no point otherwise. If I am OK to train it will be at the top level." May as well sell those seats, for our bet Ms Kelly will not make the starting line if anything Post-Olympics 04 is anything to be judged from.

Chrisy from Boston, “I just attended a TA workshop on stress management and thought I'd share this with you...enjoy! 101 WAYS TO COPE WITH STRESS Courtesy of the Tripler Army Medical Center, Honolulu, Hawaii” 101? I was stressed trying to read through them all!! And I mean the first one was ‘Get up 15-minutes earlier than you usually do.” Doesn’t something like that correspond with going to bed 15-mins earlier, or is that really a stress reducer cutting down on sleep? The second “Prepare for the morning the night before” - Is that not what the 15-minutes are for? Number three “avoid tight fitting clothes” - another thing to worry about?? I gave up before reading #4 of the 101.
Players forced to used steroids in SAF training camps. Scary stuff! Thanks to Jeff for the link.
Youi have to give these email-scammers credit for inventiveness, the two latest I received, “Case Study, please fill in your details to help us provide data for the World Bank” - laughable, and “British Olympics Lottery Fund. Payout due to excess advertising funds. The public who submitted their emails as a petition of support for the bid were put in a giant lottery and your name has been chosen…” Not bad - got my 10-second attention to read its originality that the Nigerian emails don‘t get. Who falls for these things? Anyone? Maybe people that do submit emails...
Liked the Flyer quote, “I can resist everything except temptation.”—Oscar Wilde

Stumpy is telling us that he deserves a new nick-name, “I want something heroic, in fact at the downtown store they call me The Hulk!” Hm, is this why? Here’s Stumps at the finish of a recent race!

Only weeks after finishing 4th in the Helsinki Marathon the incredible Derartu Tulu of Miuzuno TC, twice Olympic 10,000m champion, won the Hydro Active Women's Challenge in London. Tulu won the 5,000m road race in 15 minutes and 30 seconds. She finished five seconds clear of Kenya's Susan Chepkemei, with Kim Smith, New Zealand's World University Games 5000m gold medallist, third. Report from on the site Urban, “Good run by Kim Smith, she drove the pace for the first 3k. Brits of the like Charlotte Dale and Julia Bleasdale were dropped early on and so was Sonia O'Sullivan who was targetting more like 16 mins. With 1k to go Tulu in her Mizuno kit made a move and Chepkemei couldn't do much. Smith in third. Bleasdale came 4th, then Dale. A bit scary one of the Serpie girls who races frequently too just came 11 seconds behind Sonia O'Sullivan.. Tegla Lourope (Mizuno?) won a race in Liverpool.” Thanks Urban, and yes Tegla is Mizuno TC. Dibaba, also Mizuno Track Club, had picked up a hamstring injury while training on Friday thus missed the 5km race.

Kenya's Paul Tergat is to challenge the UK All-Comers' ten miles record when competing at the BUPA Great South Run on October 9 a couple of weeks after he races in England’s premier half…. The record is 45:56 and held by the late great Benson Masya. Benson started his career as Masaya and when asked by a journalist, “What is it, which spelling?” He replied, it does not matter, it is the same me. His favorite nickname was when the British Press headlined a newspaper cutting (that he‘d carry with him) that said, “Big Ben”.
New Haven Abdi Abdirahman gets a new AR of 58:42 (61:47 1/2M pace) for 20km way ahead of Ryan Shay 60:34 (pace for a 63:45 1/2M) with Blake Russell 66:43 (1:10:18-pace) as first femme.
Olympic Silver man from ‘96 Lee, Bong-ju, nicknamed "Bongdari" is running the Real-Berlin Marathon at the end of the month - a great coup for the race organizers Mark Milde. This is the Asian legend, and he is trying for a 2:08 type time, he holds the Korean record of 2:07:20
Judith recommends for anyone racing at Van Cortlandt Park, “Gilbert's Café near the finishing line.”
Organizers of the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon announced defending champs Evans Rutto of Kenya and Constantina Tomescu-Dita of Romania will return to Chicago next month… no real surprise as Evans was announced as signing a multi year deal last year!
Early bird - Kelly Holmes is expected to tell England's selectors this weekend whether she wishes to be considered for inclusion in next year's Commonwealth Games team and defend her 1500 metres title. The English side apart from the multi-event disciplines, marathon and walks will be chosen on Monday and the selectors are determined to consider only those wishing to make the trip to Melbourne next March. Early huh for a track race selection!! "We already know Jon Brown isn't seeking a place," said Chris Carter the selectors chairman of the two-times Olympic Games marathon fourth placer," and I know there are others who don't want to go." I mean who is in form in early September may not be so half a year later.
How come dog owners in the park pick up after, but horses owners don’t? I was wondering this when running round the bridle path dodging splodge after splodge after…

Back in the day when I used to cut my hair and wear a suit…. Okay, that one day a year for the Rat Race - Our number two featured race that we wish had not disappeared! It was a classic event, although I have never forgiven the organizers for swiping the first prize form me in the first year I ran, the Flyer said “Business Attire” and I won in a Prison Jumpsuit with a ‘Insider Trader’ briefcase - the guy they gave the win to finished over a minute later (and it was only a two mile race) wearing a lightweight jacket with the lining cut out, a T Shirt with a tie drawn(!) on the T Shirt with a marker pen, and had a lightweight dummy briefcase that was cut down to a single layer of cloth pinned onto his hip! The other prize on the day was for the most original costume (I was hoping to double dip) was won by a guy who had simply thrown a bucket of paint over an old suit! How amazing!

Anyway thanks to Snapper Don for digging out this photo and passing it on to us! Taken in one of the two subsequent years when I 'conformed' and wore a toned down version of my business attire.

In the last classic version of the Fifth Avenue Mile, Isaac Viciosa of Spain won his fourth consecutive title in 3:55.59. The course record, 3:47.52 by Sydney Maree, was set in the inaugural year (1981) and is one of the oldest road racing records in America. The accepted world’s best was set by Philamon Hanneck when racing for the MIZUNO TC, 3:46, although Dr. Mike Boit set a downhill record of 3:28 in NZ years ago.

At the races - Firstly it was great to see so many nice people up there, like a holiday club. Elizabeth Phillips who is the USATF Women’s Chair was doing the sign up with Jacob, Warren King aka ‘The King’ was up there as usual. I saw Comfy Ed, great to see him again, Armando & Sue from CPTC, and a bunch of other CPTC-ers. I was talking to Chubbs and Herb-the-Verb when two ladies (non runners) came up and asked to take my photograph because I reminded them of someone - I must have a twin. And Chubbs was showing off his new natty racing shoes, “I only got them because I saw a picture of Bekele wearing them in Track & Field News!” Advertising works huh? Stumpy & Sheila were up there with the little chiseler Liam. Kurt Le Vert & Centuryman, both in their new Urban Singlets, and we even saw Tom the ex-assistant coach of the Flyers and Monika. Neil from Central Park sent greetings from Frida in Iceland who he’d met at the world masters track races in Spain - Frida was second and third over there in the middle distances - she used to go to school in Georgia I think, Frida Run Thoradottir - good name for a runner.

So standing on the starting line I think the race is going to be between John Henwood, Kabiso, and possibly Bennet from Urban who is a runner waiting to happen - he’s only about 30” per 5k behind these guys without their experience or training. However I figured John would take it. The gun goes off - for the first mile I actually have a view of what is happening - Kabiso taking the pace trying to leave John… after the first mile I could no longer see (foliage y’know, okay the truth was I was running backwards.)

Actually I had a good run until mile number three when I fell down a hole on the side of the path and pulled by troublesome leg muscle. Slowing to a jog I thought I’d drop out as I did not want to further impair the offending bane of my running, but I thought, ‘flip, only a mile to go…’ - Anyway - the warm down jog revealed that John had won from Kabiso, he took him in the final straightaway, as he put it, “He was leaving me on the hills, up and the down hills. Being tall those down hills area killer with the steps. On the finishing stretch I could see I was catching him….” Also the Bronx is Kabiso’s home training ground. I think Bennet was third, but will have to wait and see when the results come out as I forgot what he said.

The steps are indeed horrendous and were never there in the good old days of VCP racing. John had the same problem as me, his sunglasses darkened the ground perspective and flattened the bumps. And who won the women? Well I think it was a woman in Orange, thus Central Park, and the first letter of her name might have been an L… at that stage I was talking to Cara and Chubby. Chubby? Well he developed a nose bleed, a fine excuse if ever there was one. Cara had just finished her long run with the Madison Marathon group… apparently Danny the Dollarman was up there…. More to come in another day’s episode--

NY famous club CBGB's owner has vowed to fight the closure order - Blondie played there, the ramones, everyone in that small club in the east village. Dubbed the Home of Underground Rock since 1973. Talking Heads even started out there…

James Mwangi of Kenya won the Rock 'n' roll Half Marathon in a course record 1 hour, 42 seconds Sunday. The victory earned him a berth on Kenya's team for the 2005 world half marathon championships. Reebok’s Werknesh Kidane of Ethiopia won the women's race in her half-marathon debut with a time of 1:09:48. Breaking away from an eight-woman pack at the 10-mile mark, she covered the final 5K in a world class 15:58.

Like the Leonard Cohen song Fingerprints… It was down to the Fingerprint house yesterday morning. Having navigated the security I get up to the tenth floor and the room is full of foreign looking people - I swear it was 90% Asian and 10% African. I only saw one head without dark brown/black hair and that was a bald guy, with a black beard! Well I soon had fun helping out as one guy from the West Indies did not know how tall he was. So as one who did I made a mark on the wall, and then a girl who knew her height made a mark too and we split the difference to get to a 5’ 8” reading… the kind of things you do when you have times on your hands, and then we all discussed vegetables and what we ate growing up to see if there was any correlation between that and the amount we had grown to. All before we made our move to the front of the line!

Well you have got to remember that things move very slowly in these offices, where the simple word such as ‘Next’ is then up graded to “you!” To “Hey you I am pointing at! See I am beckoning you to the next window??” Are all met with a placid smile and not an inch of movement. I was most surprised that I had to remove my earrings to give my fingerprints (yup a snap shot too), such a pain as they take an age to put back in and never become a ring again as I squash them trying to force the clasp shut, more like the shape of a planters peanut…..

Khalid Khannouchi - September 11th racing in Providence for the men’s 5km! The legend is back on the roads, we hope he has a great race and finishes injury free….

Talking food - I get my breads at Eli’s Vinegar Factory, not much else as it costs an arm and a leg, (how about 7oz of bread for $2:95??). Anyway I am standing there and this lady comes up to me, “Do you know if I can pick up a soda in this store? I should know as I am here everyday!” What I want to say - ‘Do I look like a friggin sales help person standing here in my running singlet and holding a backpack?? I mean there’s a cashier to your left and to your right - take a wild stab at who might know!’ What I do say, “I am sorry, I don’t drink soda.’ and turned away - this in fact is a bit of a lie, but I figured out it was informative, but polite and unfriendly enough to make sure she never asked me anything again, if she does shop here often! Good ploy huh?

The 41st Palio della Quercia meeting in Rovereto, the oldest Italian one-day meet: Two fast Kenyans - Youssef Saad Kamel from Bahrain aka Geoff from Kenya, (1:43.96) and Kenyan Janet Jepkosgei (1:57.82) which happens to be a Kenyan record no less! She aims to run faster in Berlin - don’t we all!
Some un-Chinese times from the Asian Games in the 10k - Women: 1500m: 1. Miho Sugimori (Jpn) 4:12.69, 2. Svetlana Lukasheva (Kaz) 4:13.83, 3. Yuriko Kobayashi (Jpn) 4:14.15.
Good to see Jhapanese women doing well in the middle distances.
10,000m: 1. Bai Xue (Chn) 33:34.74, 2. Yumi Sato (Jpn) 33:42.11
I dropped by the store to say Hi to the Sick Chubbs and wish him Get well soon, he thinks the rest will do him good and will be racing at VCP on Sunday. But the good news is that he is losing the pounds with the plague! That is making him happy. And we know that he’ll rebound fast and run like the wind again soon enough!
Last year’s New Haven champion Ryan Shay returns on Monday, we are hoping NJ’s local Matt Downin claims the title, and on the women we think Colleen De Reuck will be champ, with Dana Coons and Jenny Crain in the running.

Thanks to TGV who voted today, and also to Urban in London - an overseas voter! Glad they voted, hopefully a tick for me, but voting is the main thing.

Magazines at the Gym: So I no longer do the jipity machines, these days I stretch and use the treadmill at the gym only. However I often read the magazines on the rack there, so yesterday a woman the age of 6 score times 79 comes up to me, “I saw you are often reading, so I’ve some magazines for you.” Very sweet of her, but the choice of reading material is not on my top list - now if she’d have W I’d have been in business. Smiling as I am balancing on a swiss ball holding a pile of magazines the size of texas.

I guess this is not the most dazzling of paragraphs to follow my Vote Campaign, I should have told you I was reading… urm… Well W is a great magazine.

**Runner’s Massage in New York City - Go for the best prices to the Fishion Herb Center at 107 Mott Street (rear) Tel: 212-966-8771 Not only are these guys cheap they are also excellent for runners, non of this herb smelling, rubbing in circles, one hour plus jumbo…. To the point sports massage!
We met up with Partime Pam on the street yesterday - wow, a long time, she was making dinner arrangements for Labor Day, so if her Boyfriend is reading this site and you aren’t invited at 12:30 on Sunday don’t tell Pam I was listening in to her phone message. Alas part-time has become No-time, she is no longer running anymore, “Though I might come down one Wednesday to shout at everyone like you do!” Yeah, yeah, The No-Show.
Exciting Debut - Eight-time IAAF World Cross Country medal winner, World Champion, Olympic medalist Werknesh Kidane, of Ethiopia, is stepping up in distance, and will compete at the Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon this Sunday at Virginia Beach.
Thanks to Atilla for sending us this; “In generosity and helping others be like a river... In compassion and grace be like sun... In concealing others’ faults be like night... In anger and fury be like dead... In modesty and humility be like earth... In tolerance be like a sea... Either exist as you are or be as you look..
Hz. Mevlana - nice words.
Another article in the Kenyan Press with facts pulled from a Rabbit’s hutch: Talking about Komen, telling he’s breaking his silence, well he was never silent for starters - always talking to the press (Story by DAVID MACHARIA).Talks about how great his 3000m WR record is, agreed on that one, but, “This is the only of his world records that has remained intact.” Well what about his IAAF ratified and accepted 2-mile record? What about his Indoor 3000 WR? Then “He is also credited with the being the second runner to break the 13-minute barrier in the 5,000m.” Really, we think not. Also, “Komen broke the 1,500 metres world record by clocking three minutes, 29.46 seconds in Monaco.” He did? Not. “Six days later, he broke the 5,000 metres world record in Brussells and four days later, Komen shattered the one mile record in Berlin, clocking 3:46.38.” nope, to the mile record, perhaps he forgot to insert Kenyan in there….

Anyway enough, enough, but Komen has added, “To display his confidence that the mark will take a long time to improve on, Komen has promised a car or cash bonus to any Kenyan athlete who beats that mark on home soil.” Talking about his World Record - well a souped up Komen could not beat his records on Kenyan soil so that is a dumb bonus to put out there - like saying, I’ll pay a Million dollars to anyone who breaks the world marathon record at a certified marathon in Kenya, make it three million, make it five…..

Here’s my own take on Komen, firstly he is no way near 29-years old. I ran with several of his class mates from the Burnt Forrest region who are a good 7-years older.. Secondly he had a long career in Kenya as a pace maker before making it to the ‘outside world’ thus you can compare him to an American athlete who performs well here but is not yet known in Europe….

The big change came in 1998, back in 1995 he was shy, quite, and trained like the devil himself. He hardly came out of the shadow. Then after 1998 he wandered around in a Hugo Boss suit, with wads of cash and (yes back then) offering people cash if they could beat his times.

Personally I was rather surprised when he failed a caffeine test back in the 90’s - NOT because of any reason other than I know he is a tea drinker and the excuse circulated at the time about Daniel not digesting coffee so well, staying in the system, just did not make sense as he was not drinking it.. At the same time there was a series of tests being run with two ingredients being mixed to give great boosts for those performing at the 12-13 minutes of needed energy range… but this being a web site, I’m speculating, just musing on a story and not getting into the things I could. But I will say Caffeine was by far, far, the less potent of the two ingredients.

Talking design - Oakley are moving into the fashion world, See Elle magazine center page, and yuck to the model they are using, and to the clothes line - frumpy, the clothes are ill fitting… saywah? Whilst I’m on a moan I don’t like the new Cartier watch either, a circle with a square in the center never looks the best I think - but what do I know. I also don‘t like the new Patek P. watch - it has 24 cities written on the dial, too much info! I mean how often do you need to know what time it is in Karachi? I am yet (regrettably) to get there once for one time.
Starbucks is in training - he ran an hour on the sand dunes yesterday, meanwhile the Simba did two, and then ran in the pool.. Like the rebel she is, never stops.
Mexico Marathon. Thanks to Jorge, results are below, on an earlier day’s posting.

Nice email from Mary S, “Tx again for your entertaining web site, especially like the NBA updates on who teams sign. Also, did you know that the owner of Starbucks, Howard Schultz, also owns Seattle SuperSonics. We get free Starbucks coffee here.” Wow, what a boon!

“The town hall of Bunol, which lies just inland from Valencia on Spain's Mediterranean coast, spent 24,960 euros on the fruit and dumped it the streets for the chanting masses.” Anyway, we liked this, profound(!), quote, “the most important thing is that it was started by the people," said Eusebio Carrascosa, 66, a member of the Tomatina commission… who’d thunk it? Here was I guessing it was Peter the Pickle from the vegetable garden.
We hear from Krafty over in Williamsburg, “I ran into Herbie and his compadres on the track yesterday (or actually looking through the fence that surrounds our track!). He was trying to recruit mexicans for your team.” That must be Herb the Verb! Who’ll turn up next, I hope they are not Mexicans belonging to any other team as recruiting is not part of my beliefs on how to build a team, but as Chubby noted, “It’s going to happen amongst members, that is natural.”
The Metropolitan Athletics Congress (MAC) has a new name: USA Track & Field - Metropolitan. And a shocker to see who their sponsor is!!
Britain's Jon Brown will make his competitive return at next month's World Half Marathon Championships. He has already made a return at Falmouth this year, but skipped the world’s marathon as the preps were not the best.
Down on the track I tried to sneak an extra interval in to what the Doctor had prescribed, and people were sharp - I was nearly lynched, but they did it! Kool!. Peter2 back from the podiatrist, Lissy the car owner, Kevin with some belly aches, Rick adjusting to the lactic, Cristina flying along without breathing, Anne the thunderball looking recovered from her great race on the weekend, OzPaul putting in a great set and equally recovered. Jose zipping along in his own world, probably thinking about his next Saharian adventure.

Mark on the skates. Kirsten switching shoes mid interval (pretty snappy trick). Charlotte passing by. Eric looking pained at the short rests. Gary hanging on to a Sabrina the Iron eye. Jonathan looking better as the laps rolled by. Jonnie & Suneet coming in matching Newcastle colors - both English too! Paul K. remembering how the Wedza group is one long pain bath. Cruiser doing great and hanging in with AnneG who is doing the remembering after recovering from doing San Diego in June. Randi blitzing along. MasterBlaster too with Robin on her heels. Luiz running a negative splits. Jamie on the button the whole session. DavidP stepping it up a gear on the 800’s, and Shawn looking snappy in here red outfit. AmexLee contemplating which group to run with Susan B, pushing well, and Jeff coming late, but finishing fast! Michelle Had a bad knee so she was absento, but she did tell us that Mike Trunkes sent the link with the world master results. We are sending the Chubbs next year!

A few years ago I used to do the Captions to the NYRR web site race day photos - when Krafty Krebs worked full time at the club, I’d go in to the sixth floor and cut and resize the pictures, and had great fun - click for an example writing about the pics. My pay was dire - a bagel lunch (my fav of course) which I would get from the green tree deli that has lousy tasting bagels, but I was too lazy to go the extra four blocks to Hot N’ Crusty Bagels where Krafty and I would go on other days…

Anyway I had forgotten all about this until I saw the Manhattan shots had been posted on the NYRR site, and every single picture nearly tells a story! Briefly (one pic per line) the front line of pics middle one - Anne (second row of runners) giving Lete a beady eye as the latter dances for Lily, who won the parks 4-miler and is the parks pink panther. Chubby standing by looking like doom….wondering can he hit the splits, “Surely”….he is thinking, as it should have been routine.
Next row first pic Felipe Garcia who has apparently started running for UATH now, displays the blue singlet, Anne is in the red singlet version, and to the right of Anne is chubby in the white Urban singlet. Chasing Felipe is Rafael, who is now back running for WSX and is the best Dominican runner over the 21.1k distance - first met him with Sherlock back in New Mexico ‘99. The event staff person is Alem, a former top Ethiopian runna‘ in the city.

Next line photo to the left has to be Boubacar who runs for the Achilles and finished in 2-hours! Chasing him is Mitch from the Flyers who was standing on the start talking about his bad leg injury before the run! Next line, left, we have GNY’s Edy in the bright yellow who was doing her 18-miles inside the 13-miles run… The guy in the pic came to one of the last lectures at the club - glad to see he is taking the advice! The next line we have Assafa crossing the line with Bernie the Chairman and Peter C from the NYRR holding the tape for a fantastic time performance on the day - remember this guy ran in Atlanta ‘96 Ethiopian Olympic 10,000m team! What you might not know is that Peter, a runner too, was a top man at Sony before moving to the NYRR.

Wow, this is taking a long time - Next line (middle) Chris from Urban again, in the toothpick pose - this is the guy Costanza thinks is toooo thin. Middle line again - has to be Michelle Bleako’ who is sadly leaving us in five weeks - Melbourne‘s gain is GNY‘s loss…. Okay, getting tired now, but we should mention another Urbo further down - Sabrina under the water! Funny because RandySax mentioned that he was not able to make the store breakfast party because, “Sabrina was complaining about the need for her to shower..blah, blah,” He he.

Reminder-Please drop off your old Shoes at the Store (uptown only! Thx to the Chubby Boss for allowing this collection point for me!) this week if at all possible for a Shoe4Africa Drive. Just put them in a plastic bag and drop them off - thank you!!
Kenyan Daniel Kipchirchir Komen heads the field for next month's BUPA Great North Mile ran in conjunction with the big Half.
In Starbucks with Michael, John Henwood comes in looking for John Honerkamp… I tell you we should have a Starbucks running club… John is running the 4-miler XC this weekend as I am too - Cross Country here we come (back) - Always suffered over the xc, so I‘m sparking off my renewed interest in Running by going backup to VCP! The only drawback, as John pointed out, “No starbucks up there!”
Ethiopia's Tirunesh Dibaba is planning a world road record attempt over 5,000m at the Hydro Active Women's Challenge in London on Sunday.
From Jorge in CT (thanks), “This is Chayito Iglesias, a female Mexican Runner, 95 years-old who is participating in the World Senior Masters Track and Field Championship in San Sebastian Spain this week . She runs 100, 200 and 400 meters. She started running late after walking the street during her whole life selling newspaper in Mexico. His grandchild is her coach.” Unbelievable, I love the last line! I might seek out my grandfather, see if he wants to lace up his nikes… I don‘t know how old he is, but he must be somewhere up there as my father is 62. What an amazing story.
HALLE TO LEIPZIG, in Germany - Mitteldeutschen Marathon #1 Daniel Tobry, Asics Team Halle, 2:37:37. WOMEN - 1. Agnieszka Golak, POL, 2:54:34 - One race director, Waldemar Cierpinski!

News from EldoLise up in Canada, “Well winding things down with the latest job (I hope) by the end of this year- tired of being paid to eat I guess one would say. In the meantime, off to Italy next week for some R&R- I figured nothing is more relaxing than driving alongside those crazy Italians for a few days..”

Yesterday I met with Peter S. and he was talking about Long Runs and how everyone runs them then discovers that someone else had also had a long run that weekend - and they could have hooked up - So if you want to go Long this Sunday at 9-min mile pace in Central Park please email and I‘ll put you in touch with Peter - a most interesting chap who has lived all over the world and can tell you about the delights of running a marathon in Dubai amongst other things! We met at Sarabeth‘s on Madison just next to The Store, and I was surprised how good the food was, in particularly the Halibut pecan main dish, and Fruit Pie Crumb. The salad was pretty dull, but I did like the raisin bread. Pretty to that I had tried running in Central Park and I kid you not on a three mile run I had to stop twice whilst running on the bridle path because of the ever growing number of the traffic jams on there(!)….

Prior to that I had dropped by the store to meet Chubby but he had gone home, so I ended up chatting to a customer about their experience in the Manhattan half, and prior to that I was down at the Fashion Institute of Technology as my first day back as the Cross Country Coach, and had to walk all over Campus for half an hour as they have changed the ID system and lost my paperwork, so can‘t find my AT(?) number to print out a new ID even though I had my three month old ID from the Spring season - go figure.. The woman asks, “Sir, what forms of ID do you have on you?” So I say ‘only this’ showing her my old ID, she looks at my wallet in my hand, “No other?” I tell her, ‘I’ve got a starbucks card, is that any good?’

And that was only mid afternoon, from 6-AM it was nonstop… The latter part of this week I have my cooking hotline, and nope I don’t think I will print the 1-800 number, and the organizers sent me the paper work for the guidelines, FAQ’s, etc, it is a ZIP file with each document with multiple pages - like taking an exam! Do I need to read all this? Who to direct media calls to, names of this and that - forget cooking expert, it is like a whole new kettle of carrots…

And finally Kurt Le Vert elaborates and brings you his Golden Moments - I am not completely satisfied with the order but here is my first go at it... This one is just marathon... I also found myself against all attempts finding a lot of American athletes this could be because its my experience but I have tried to be impartial and not country centric.
1. Bikila 1960 Rome - Olympics - when I think of the Olympic Marathon and the marathon in general the image of him running along the Apian Way along the cobblestones barefoot just sticks with you more than any other image.

2. Grete Waitz 1978 - NYC comes in as a pace after running her liongest run of 13 miles - wins the race and sets the World record in the process forever changing womens running without her I doubt it would be as far as it is now
3. 1982 - Duel in the Sun Boston Salazar and Beardsley toe toe toe head to head in the blistering heat neither ever ran faster after this race 4. 1984 - Joan Benoit - tough choice here - but I will go with the Inaugural Olympic Marathon she decides to take it from the gun out on the LA freeways alone in the heat of a California Summer (it was either that or her World Best bettering Grete's mark set in London by almost 3 minutes and doing it at Boston)
5. 1975 - Bill Rodgers - Boston again a relative unknown comes in and takes the race setting an American record in the Process.
6. Derek Clayton 1967 - destroys the 2:10 barrier - dropping the world record down from 2:12 - 2:09 he would then go on to drop it to 2:08 which would last for 12 years

7. Paula - tough to characterize this being so close in time - but either her dropping of the world record to 2:15 was an amazing run - but I think I would think that seeing her win a major championship after the long list of setback in championship races is that bit more significant. 8. 1952 - Zatopek - yeah it seems low but in only considering the marathon not the full triple it is still on the list takes the first one he has ever run and wins beating the World record holder Jim Peters at the time

9. 2002 - Khannouchi/Tergat/Geb - duel it out through the miles with KK victorious in the end and a World Record amazing to see these three running stride for stride 10. 1896 - wouldn't be right to not have the event that started it all on here Spirodon Louis wins the inaugural Marathon in front of the home crowd to secure their only Athletics Medal in the first Olympics.

Honorable Mention here 1983 - Dixon in NYC - I was there wanted it in the top 10 but couldn't figure out who to bump out kicks Smith in Central Park in the rain.
1968 - John Stephen Akhwari triumph of the runner - limping into the stadium limping badaged but never beaten.
1920 - Hannes Kolehmainen - 1920 Antwerp wins the Olympic Marathon and sets the Worl Record in the process.
1964 - Bikila again first man to repeat - then after winning setting another World Record he breaks into boot camp in the center of the track.
1972 - Shorter wins iN munich the city where he was born.
2001 - Takahashi and Nderba - Takahashi becomes the first woman under 2:20 only to be beaten a week later by a minute by Catherine the Great.
1945 - Johnny Kelly Wins Boston at age 37 10 years after winning it for the first time.
2001 - Lee Bong Ju - Boston Breaks the Kenyan streak.
1956 - Alain Mimoun - finally gets a win after finishing right behind Zatopec on so many occasions…

Phew what a list, thanks Kurt.

Meanwhile Tim Henman crashes out of the US open….
Michael Owen is returning to the English Premier League - Newcastle, not Liverpool. ‘Owen's scoring record for club and country is second to none, but for Real mere footballing criteria are simply not enough. Unlike Beckham, the low-profile Owen does not have the media impact and marketing power to justify keeping him at the club at all costs.’ And that’s the football world of Real Madrid. True in running too - why do some runners get sponsorship deals and others not? Like when a runner moans, “I’m beating other sponsored runner’s, why can’t I get a deal?” - Well the answer is often personality…. Beckham has it. Speaking English - we met Jerome on the Rez last night, back for two weeks from London.

Please drop off your old Shoes at the Store (uptown only! Thx to the Chubby Boss for allowing this collection point for me!) this week if at all possible for a Shoe4Africa Drive. Just put them in a plastic bag and drop them off - thank you!!
Yelena Kanales of Russia coming for the women’s 5th Avenue mile in a few weeks! She is the world leader this year.
“What does Rebel mean?” Asked Costanza, and why didn’t I get a caption? The Shoe Doctor is the Jimmy Dean of the running world, he is above any caption!

Talking women; I met the rudest today, at the Gym - she was the type of woman who, nah I won’t go there - we were in the elevator Gym, (okay, it is six flights of stairs give me a break). I shuffled in to the back and she walked over and trod on my foot. Wondering what she had trodden upon she looked round and straight into my eye, then turned away. So I said, “Don’t worry, it was only my foot you trod on.” to which the Madame replied, “Well, you should not have such big feet.”
To that I countered, “That you can’t see that my feet are a normal size may be part of your initial problem.” To which she spun back, “Problem, do I look like I have problems?”
To that I told her, “You like someone….” and then the elevator opened, thank goodness.

I got a phonecall from my blind Kenyan runner friend Hellen Cherono yesterday, she’s too funny, “I just hit any numbers on the phone until I come to a number that is busy, then I know I have found you.”
Congrats to Lee Sossen, a duathlete whose goal was to win the USA Tri Mid-Atlantic Championship, and he did just that on Sunday. Congrats also to Kyomi, in my marathon training squad, who qualified for the Tokyo International Invitational Women‘s Marathon.
Kelly Holmes says she may retire in three weeks because of continuing problems with her Achilles injury. And what has she to prove on the athletics circuit? The same scenario as the great Anders Garerud who in 1976 won the Olympic Steeplechase Gold in 8:08 and set a new world record, he gave up soon after - I mean he was training his whole life with the Olympics in mind, then you do it, and set the record - where do you go after that?
Swedish Women * Finnish Men - winners of the FinnKampen in Goteborg in the annual comp. Over the weekend - with over 20.000 enthusiastic spectators each day for a Sweden Vs Finland match T&F is not dead! Great to see all the big names lining up too - I remember when I lived in Sweden how much this event meant to the athletes who would focus the whole season on trying to be a Finn-killer. If you could double up at the meet and win you became a national hero.

And on that note I heard from Rikard K. of Stockholm, “Annmarie Sandell won the 10,000 (in the Finnkampen), and Lisa Blommé won the Tjejmilen (Sweden’s version of the Mini #1 Blommé, 78, SWE 34:45 2 Jenny Johannesson, 76, SWE 35:16 3 Karolina Arewång Höjsgaard 71, SWE 35:25), and Måns Höiom, of the Students Athletic team, won the Reykjavik Marathon - he runs 300 kilometers per week!”

Saw him on Sunday, no mention of anything, then an email on Sunday night, “By the way I’m getting hitched tomorrow” - and that’s Adam from the Thursday group, “Oh and I can’t take the money from Danny the Dollarman for the bet…” Danny will be pleased to hear that, and no doubt lining up the next bet as he had no qualms at taking the 250 from Chubby! I asked for elaborations and just got a ‘yup will explain later, drop off your ipod.’ All in a NY minute.
From Kurt Le Vert, “Best moments? Bikila's triumph in Rome - how can you not have him barefoot along the Appian way over the cobblestones not there is tough and Zatopek's what seems impossible triple... The other men’s one that is on the fringe for me is the London race a few years ago with Geb, Tergat, and the Khanouch duking it out resulting in a world record. For the ladies side Tough to argue with Joanie out there in 84, Paula's 2:15 or maybe even her most recent win in the Worlds... One significant event I think should actually be Grete's first NYC race coming in as a pacer then going on to win and then do it 8 more times! Had to be as important as anything for women’s running and its popularity... so crap I don't know.. James Carney was fourth in the 10,000 at the 2005 USA Championships in 28:35.95.
Another Great RW interview with Peter Gambo, talking to James Carney who reveals, “I’m 5' 10." If I'm 125, I'm heavy. I usually weigh between 120 and 125.…” after talking wrestling.
Martin Lel ran 61:27 set in 2003 edition of the Virginia Beach Half to be run this weekend.. Will the record fall?

As 2005 comes to a track close we note only East African born athletes have ran Sub 27-minute 10,000 races this year. In the women’s top ten times it is Ethiopia most dominate with Kenya & China in there. In the top six performances the name Dibaba appears four times(!) In the women‘s road 10k the name The Simba appears four times in the top 13-places. Not even including her Peachtree 31:17 (#4 time on the list, as it is *excluded* as there is a 35-meter drop on the course! Hm, 110% humidity there too!

Iceland, “My friend paid $24 for a burger, and it wasn’t even a fancy place, she thought it was three timers more expensive than NYC.” That sounds about right, apart from the rent that it.
A quote from Mike, talking about his girlfriend, “ call her my Caribbean vacation, she is just like that, one minute its great and beautiful, the next minute you have to run for cover and look for an umbrella.......…” Had to laugh at that one.
The IAAF is voting this week for its performance of the Year athletes - “Tirunesh Dibaba ETH. Winning the 5000/10,000 double in Helsinki after she already doubled at the World cross earlier this year…” So we can deduce from that comment that perhaps it should be ‘performances’ of the year, as surely they are instructing you to remember that event, yet for Bekele, “Achieving his fourth World Cross country double in St Etienne, only months after tragically losing his fiancée” No mention of his track WC Gold, and to be honest that was one of the performances of the year - Why? Well Kenenisa is the undisputed King of the Distances, and when he runs for himself is undefeatable, yet when he follow team orders, as in the Olympics 5000m, he shows vulnerability - and in this year’s WC he knew not so much about the ’new’ Kenyan Martin M. who could have had a sprint to end all sprints, remember Kenenisa has already said that is his weakness over Geb, “I can’t finish like Gebrselassie..” Yet he still obeyed team orders and ran pulling his Ethiopian team mates along as ordered. The Ethiopians these days look like they are copying the tactics of the Kenyans from the 88-95 era. However now Bekele has the seconds off his own record surely he & Dibaba will win the titles!

And Bekele said after, "It was more than just perfection tonight," said Bekele. "I am proud rather than happy."
“Of course I will still try to improve this time. Breaking a World record is not easy, but I cannot stop trying, I need to try! I need to improve. I am still very young and need to work for a long time. And perhaps at 27-28 I will move to road running, first competing in half marathons and then try the marathon.” “Yes, there are days when running and training twice a day is not easy. Sometimes the weather is bad or it is simply a bad day. I am not happy every day, but running is my job. My life has changed but running is a part of my life.”

At 36-yr old Simon V of the Netherlands smashed the Euro Steeple record with his outstanding 8:04, “Even when I ran 8:06 a few years ago, I said I wanted to be the first non-African under eight minutes,” Vroemen said. “At the same time I’m not the type of person who wants to speak in black and white. I think everyone’s a human. “Carlos Lopes ran the marathon World record when he was 37 years old,” Vroemen continued. “I was a little boy sitting in the stands when he did that, and it just always stayed in my mind that you can actually be a World record runner when you’re 37 years old.” - Gotta believe!

So Marty (TGV) is in town, and we always (As a habit is forming) go for Pizza when we meet up. So this time we went down to the West Village and after rudely pushing up by mistake (past tourists whom I informed that it was part of their NYC experience as we let them take the first table, in fact the reply was, “I‘m from Paris, I know all about pushing!”) got a table at John’s on Bleeker.

In fact Pizza Supremo had once recommended somewhere in the W Village as having the best pizza in New York City, it was Joe’s but as we discovered there is no seating there John’s it was. I can honestly say, and I would have never guessed this, that New York really does have the best pizza in the world - and yes I have traveled extensively in Italy. It took us a while to find the place, and we did witness one of the Friday Night Bicycle rebel groups getting arrested on the street and lots of young students getting put in the Paddy Wagons.

the actual pizza was okay, but definitely not near the best I’ve tasted in NYC - Grimaldi’s was better, but not the best as many tout - for me it is either the place on 116th, Patsy’s, or Totonno’s on Second Ave.

From Glen, “Just read your "business card" (aka blog) and I saw your post regarding my watch's reading of the altitude in Manhattan. It prompted me to do a google check. FYI: According to the USC & GS Datum the highest natural point in Manhattan is 265.05 above sea level. See the link: http://americasroof.com/nyc-manhattan.shtml Obviously, first ave on 90th is lower than 5th/90th and the reservoir is even higher. And btw according to my watch my apt on the 22nd floor is 395 feet above sea leveI. WOW, Maybe I should do altitude training in my apartment.” So there you go!

Masters (world champs) - #1 POPE BRIAN USA 14:58.28... #17TRUNKES MICHAEL CPTC/USA 15:59.00 Conor O'D of WTC is doing well in the 800m heats!
At the races: An onsight view of a morning in Central Park. I was actually there in the third person, as I left myself looking for the snooze button at 5:30 on the Upper East. I had the ignominy of being kicked on the starting line by one of the elite women.. And that kind of summed up the whole race! I met the Russian Rocket at the start, “Hi Toby, I’m sick!” Great, thanks for letting me know.. Contagious? Kidding, but he didn’t look too well either, I thought about doing a stride or two (to get away?), but then got roped into holding the microphone for an interview for the Running TV show, so I listened to the interview instead with a woman in a handcrank….. Then I saw the guy with the one leg who has run a 1:23 half marathon who I am supposed to be doing a story with myself, but I figured I would talk to him later as he looked focused on the race…. Then I chatted with Bernie the Chairman who told me, “Don’t get old, you feel awful when you do, I am stiff all the time…“ By this stage I was ready to pack up and go home - Next subject…. O-kay, well it was nice to see Kyomi & Leo out there, Always good to see and hear the support of RLX & Fidel Staab out there - can’t imagine the running scene without them!

Congrats to Abrha Assta 33 WTC NY 1:06:41 & Leteyesus Berhe 27 WTC NY 1:19:32 the overall winners. Ozpaul, “I wish they gave the awards by net time instead of the gun time as I missed the start…” Well you would not have got an award with net times anyway!
Danny’s hoped for 1:14 was a reported at the store “bad run, 1:16:10” became a 1:16:44 reality in the results.. Still he won $250 as Chubby did not break 1:18, yet lost $80 to Adam for not running 1:14.… But back to Chubby, I told him it was all about the first mile and settling in to a pace, I said, ‘just dip under 6 for the first, just…’ So he runs 5:40, so I caught him up, got in front and tried to slow it down for the second mile, 5:57, right on the button, then he sprints off… tusk!
The men’s race was a complete runaway win, but the women’s was a tough down to the wire race with Urban’s Anne & WTC’s Lete separated by mere seconds right at the tape.

Congrats to all the Urbanoso’s and Look how the team is growing! A mob scene, heebeegeebees!

Back at the store (walked awhile with Michelle B. who is sadly leaving us for the land of OZ). Chubby looked terribly depressed, “I’m giving up, I’m just going to be a coach I’ve had enough.” Join the Club Chubby! Like Leonard Cohen‘s songs - some need an ending. Stumpy’s race had an ending - he dropped out on the first loop - apparently he has been having some issues at home with slighted sleeping arrangements that might have left him a tad tired. A scene of misery, a duck out to Starbucks with Bay Guerlain. I need caffeine these days to breathe, like others use asthma inhalers.

Later back at the store Jay was there buying up the entire shelf as this was a trip in to Manhattan, “I’m working on my diet for Chicago, but it is so hard!” He said quaffing a beer at 11-am in the morning(!) Mind you I was on the end of the chisel as Costanza told me, “You eat too much, you should slow down, I’ve been watching you…getting a belly you greedy pig,” A roller as the compliments kept coming with Rice n’ Beans coming in the store and saying something bad as well - wham, who needs enemies with friends like these guys! The Harrier Gals came in, another group drinking in the morning.. Costanza warned, “Another Beer and they’ll be dancing on the tables again..” Obviously something that we missed… Well actually the day had ticked over noon by now.. And Edy came by who will be racing in the Cape next week in a 25km - she had a hard morning - 6-miles before the race, then the first loop at 7:15, then the second at 6:50’s - impressive! She was on the podium last year, so the best of luck for this year‘s race!
Jeff did well, “shooting for 7.10 pace and ended up averaging 7.11” and Adam, and Parks, both having great splits too - sounds like a banana shop! Not to forget Moses who is running like a Bull these days and going through his running shoes in a way that keeps the Boss smiling.

Sad to hear that Kathrine Switzer & Roger Robinson are moving out of 56th ST and now living in New Paltz, shall miss seeing them in the park! Kathrine of course is most famous for the Big Shove in Boston in the 1960’s….
Who won the cow in Kenya? Wesley Ochoro was ahead of the 160 runners to win the inaugural Safaricom Sambaza 10km road race in Kisii town yesterday - 28 minutes and 16 seconds from Valentine Orare in 28:46... Alice Mogire a 14-year-old school girl, took the women's race in 34:11

Talking Kenya - I got an email from a friend in Holland, Hugo Van Den Broek, nice guy who is sadly injured this year but has been running fab earlier and dipped down to 2:12 for the marathon was it last year in Rotterdam? I think he runs for Adidas, he writes, “ By the way, your website is great. First I didn't get it, there was too much information for me, but now I see that when you read it daily or at least several times a week it is very understandable and interesting.” Good we’re glad to hear it! Clarity amongst the purple haze to plagiarize Brother Jimmy (well you should hear how badly I copy him on the guitar! Some might say past the note of recognition, we just call it jazz).

We heard from Starbucks too who is just back in Holland, but soon back to the USA, he & The Simba are doing well.
Hood to Coast results - Ncic Allstars Gladstone, OR 1 17:34:51 5:22-pace, #2. Bowerman International Portland, OR 965 17:50:27 pace- 5:26 3. Haddonfield Running Company New Paltz, NY 2 18:13:20... And #355 The New York Flyers, way to go guys!
Went for dinner last night with Atilla of the Westchester Track Club, a very nice guy and a good runner to boot - he ran 14:44 in stifling conditions this year out on Randall’s Island. Atilla was a good runner in Turkey and first came to the USA to run in the Achilles Marathon in Prospect Park where he finished second to Prisco - remember him? That was the day that the Fat Tuesday’s had their last competition!

We went to a Turkish Place on Ninth Avenue called Turkish something.. We were going to go to Lyndhurst New Jersey but the traffic was so so so bad (I mean forward one car space in two light changes) that we hit a place on Ninth. So I had a most entertaining night talking about Turkey, a place I really like and have visited a few times back in the day.

Anil, “Did you know that Stephanie Hodge ran in Falmouth?” Nope that I did not know to be honest. Does not surprise me one iota though.
ALL MIZUNO footwear is 20% off. Sale at both stores- starting today through Sunday.
refreshments and giveaways at madison ave after the half on sunday
Get your mizuno's for the marathon right now! Time to stock up for the fall.
08/26
Needless(?) to say there is no on-the-day race sign up for the Manhattan Half, so you’d best do it soon. I say needless as it is a 7-AM start. All details of course on the NYRR web. This race is a classic, mainly for the heat, hills, and humidity - but it looks like two H‘s will be missing this weekend!
The men's and women's winners will each get a cow at the Safaricom Sambaza Kisii 10km Road Race…. a sack of maize (fourth place) is also on offer - needless to say the winner will be a domestic one… “Sir is that a cow in your carry on?” Well if you want stories of carrying live animals onto a plane ask Rick about Mexico and putting his dog through the X-ray machine!

Reminds me of a story Eddy H told me about once winning his weight in wine in a French Road Race, then getting clobbered at the customs for importing too much wine… Food always makes a good prize - I once won 20-kilo’s of coffee, a great deal I thought until I noticed that the timedate was running as fast as I had to; I had to drink it all asap, wasn’t a problem - no, I just caffeinated all my friends…. I was given a hen once, running related, but that’s another story.

Then there was the time I ran through the supermarket (As part of the course of a race) and I remember running down the aisle thinking ’I could grab and run right now and I bet nobody would blink an eye’… I used to do a race each year in Selfoss Iceland that was hosted by a farmer, and it was his annual event, only about thirty or so runners would trek out each year, so following the race he’d put on a banquet like non other for the runners - it kept me going back! Food is an instrumental part of running - I first met Fred Lebow at breakfast come to think about it

Micah Adriani & Jeremy Busch still hold the Round the Block records at the store - should you wish free shoes, come and beat the times - then the choice is yours.
The Gates to the Town of Running in Kenya. The place where fast running is a common sighting, and all the big houses, fast cars, and nikes belong to legs that move at mind boggling speeds. And that's the Truth.
All in the Rotterdam Line up, all have Sub 60-min clockings, all… Kenyans: Wilson Kiprotich, Rodgers Rop, Luke Kibet, Patrick Ivuti and Samuel Wanjiru running for Mizuno! Incidentally our tip too. Add Sammy Korir & Jimmy Muindi to the mix.. The women’s field is not as strong with only one sub 70-min runner, Tegla the tooth Loroupe.
I met a person on the subway yesterday who introduced themselves as a ‘Political Blogger’ as if it is an accepted profession(?) - I mean, it begs the question - who isn’t political? To have bias… show me someone who doesn’t, as for the blog - yep, go figure! I always thought I’d grow up to be a professional millionaire, well when I get there (growing up part) we’ll see, but in the meantime…. I always think it is interesting that, for a sterling example, you have a running club, and on the track at any given moment is a group of individuals so mixed and diverse it would make a Hungarian soup of ingredients - I mean you have Doctors, Lawyers, Web techno’s, philanthropists, Editors, Beauticians… but for one sacred period everyone is just a runner.
Reykjavik/ISL, 13-15 October 2005 The European Athletics Calendar Conference will be held on Friday 14 October while the European Athletics Extraordinary Congress will take place on Saturday 15 October.
Coach to Adam Goucher, 'I think you got to face the facts, you're probably done.’ Good interview on RW from Peter Gambo with Adam Goucher said to him before he set the fastest US time for the 5000m this year! …. Twas Time to get a new coach!
Time to get a new lover - Reuters) - A middle-aged Kenyan woman lost her right hand when her boyfriend of two years hacked it off with a machete after she rejected his marriage proposal.
Another coach another story - Mottram & Bideau, equal success.
In Starbucks I met Glenn yesterday, “Did you know that according to my watch we’re at an altitude of 200ft above Sea Level here in Manhattan?” Nope, didn’t.
So I met OzPaul today, “Nice of you to mention that on the site about me and the toilet, what you didn’t know was that the reason for my ‘problems’ was that Stumpy & Costanza had caused a certain pipe blockage before hand, just want it to be know…”

Anyway Danny The Dollarman, amidst the usual compliments he was throwing out to the women about muscles, reveals he has a bet with Chubbs for Sunday - If Chubbs does not run 1:18 or faster then he pays the Dollar man $250, if he then Danny pays him $50 - the last half? Chubbs did 1:18:47 at Brooklyn, a year ago at this race he did 1:17:45... Gonna be close! Chubbs side, “I made the bet to just get me in gear, I’m fed up of the way I’m running.” We did find back in 1998 that Chubbs ran 1:11! And the Dollarman? He is shooting for, “1:14“ - Our predictions? Well Chubbs has reeled me in for assistance, as much help as I can be, so we‘re getting scientific with splits now, we want to carve the bone as close as we can, so if you see two desperate pirates hovering around the 5:57 per mile split don‘t push past up, pull Chubbs on! Like Chubbs I am just shaking my head!

The Madison Marathon Group out in the park last night running well… Stan was the new man, stepping up a chunk, Moses lead the night even in the middle of his Bull week, impressive, and Paul led the other group - looked like a cruise missile tonight! Yuen & Toni were missing Kathy, Carrie was flying in the middle, with newbie Manuela offering arm wrestling challenges….I saw Mary holding on to the guys well in the other group, with Paul K joining in from the Downtown group. Todd and Michael and Paoula (sp?) ran solid sessions, and another newbie Jen hung in well - a talent who we hope will be in Boston next April.

08/25
Paul Tergat, the world half marathon record holder, and Dejene Berhanu, the Great North Run's defending champion, will go head to head over the 13.1-mile Tyneside course. Britain is vainly looking for domestic pace makes, good luck! Can we suggest Paula Radcliffe?

Rotterdam is also having a Fab half next month too - watch out for Simon Wangai there.

WTC - Quite some team for the Club Teams - “Abrha ('96 Olympian 10K Ethiopia) and Khattabi ('92, '96 Olympian, Morocco steeplechase) sandwiched Kassahun (2003, 2004 NYRRC Male athlete of the year) for the 1-2-3 finish.” Impressive to say the least.
On the Flyers site - info funk? “There is no race next weekend because of Labor Day” Scroll down the news about two inches and in the events calendar - NYRR Henry Isola Cross Country Classic (4M) next weekend! So there you go!
Long time no see Steve Marsalese of the Harriers, West Side version - “have not run in 2 months, nursing a major hamstring injury, that's what happens when you hit 40.” Sorry to hear that, hope you get healed soon.
Former Olympic triple-jump champion Jonathan Edwards has been appointed by the British Athletes Commission (BAC) as the athlete member to serve on the board of the London 2012 organizing committee (LOCOG). What an acronym!
We were asked at the Club Teams why the Urban Running Local Runner Award of the Year had been discontinued - has not, but just with the new page format there was no place to put it - This year’s standings for the best Runner on the New York Scene (qualifications either residence in NY/NJ, or competing in more than five NY area races) - Men - Matt Downin, and the Women - Atalech Ketema.
B-Ball: Dale Davis signed a two-year, $7 million contract with the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday, adding depth to their frontcourt. Wow, imagine being in a sport that had those funds to bounce around! That’s more than Chicago, Boston, Twin Cities, Portland, Cal Int’l, you get the picture, have combined for five years!
Venus and Serena Williams landed in the same draw of the U.S. Open draw - a possible fourth-round match? Roger Federer is the men’s fav.
Track Nite - With sublime weather for once, a peach of an evening, on that note the last time I was home my mother wanted to give me a garlic de-coater. I hate having too many widgets and I was telling her that I did not want it, and every time I fumble pulling the coat off an ear of garlic I think about that, there’s a lesson for you!

Ben, back off to New Paltz, but ran great tonight. Cristina was having a good battle with MasterBlaster who arrived early “Been on a boat all afternoon, refusing alcohol because of track tonight!” That’s the spirit….sorry. Diane came and fell asleep on the stands, but woke up foir the running part. Anil managed to keep his lunch contained this week. AmexLee was on a mission hurtling down the track. Dan made a welcome return and ran well. Michelle ran with Lissy, great sess! Susan B and John - Welcome, then Jamie came down again and ran well. The commander eased back into gear. And Suneet the demon put his usual 110%, Cruiser zipping along, and welcome back Anne G. Also to Jonnie who is selling his apartment and moving up to the Upper East - kool!

Evelyn was absent - I’m celebrating my 3rd anniversary of the wedding to Jim, good excuse! ChuckyChina was down and ran the session well pushing on alone. Gary took things up a notch. Randi was eager to increase the miles, “more!” DavidP was on pace. Rick now running in the middle of Group 1, Cara giving a swordfish eye! Luiz steppin it up as the session progressed, another guy who started in group II and ran so fast he ran into the back of Group 1, and Jeff who’s holding off from signing up for Sunday - we’ll be betting he’ll be there!

Sad to read in the African press, “Thugs raided Turin Marathon champion, Beatrice Omwanza’s rural home in Kisii District and stole Sh12,000 cash.

"The 10 thugs, who were armed with guns, struck on Monday midnight and harassed the runner before taking off with Sh12,000 and mobile telephones. The former Paris marathon champion was with her husband, Moses Omwanza. The two, according to Omwanza’s father-in-law Dan Omwanza, escaped unhurt.” Sadly a set back with Kenyan life.

08/23
Down town - is the Mizuno party on the Saturday, uptown on Sunday!

Through the mail box came a bagel topping suggestion; “little beats a toasted salt or sesame bagel topped with a light spread of cream cheese, lox, tomato and red onion--oh, capers must be clumsily strewn on top of the mess“ I‘ll inform Chubby. Seriously make sure you drop by the store on Sunday for the Mizuno Party. Or go to the WFC on Saturday.

Shoe of the week - The Alchemy! Why? Try it on and see! It‘s a cracker.

From Urban in London, “I tried once Emu Oil and the stuff was a bit cheaper at ZipVit. £6.95 http://www.zipvit.co.uk I am not sure if it really helps, maybe the cooling effect stimulates the circulation a bit, hard to say if it is really effective.”
The Brit Press continue to bash Paula - kind’ve odd. You would think instead of pointing out all the things that she does differently and they deem odd (the experts in their offices who probably have never run a step), they could point out all the things positive about her - Her philanthropic drives ties in with her sponsorship for instance! Mind you the Guardian really has gone down the tubes, so I guess they have to go this way to make way on the stands to let the sewage flow along with the gutter with the rest of the tabloid press. I can’t understand - a country whose backbone stands on luminaries as Tennyson, Coleridge, Wordsworth, Shakespeare has the worst newspapers in the world - I think the best sellers are ‘The Sun,’ ‘The Mirror’ & ‘The News of the World’ - I can not even draw a comparison with the worst US paper to give an example of the drivel that is printed in these sheets. Don’t believe me ask Elton John.
At the Linz Meet 3000mST - Kiprotich Wesley KEN 8:18.37 2 Chumba Linus KEN 8:20.61(the Kenyan L squad?) The women’s 3000 less hurdles - Zadorozhnaya Yelena RUS 8:46.05 2 Chenonge Ines KEN 8:53.42 3 Papp Krisztina HUN 8:53.99 with British Hurdler (who is coached by Joyce Smith’s Husband Bruce, who in turn is on the Board for the London Marathon) #10 Ankier Jo GBR 9:11.24
The Two mile race - Kigen Mike KEN 8:20.09 2 Bett Mark KEN 8:20.65 3 Kogo Micah KEN 8:20.88, unbelievable to think only one man has ever ran under Eight despite the million dollar challenge that Adidas threw out there once….
A moral of running - when you're in serious pain, just stop, until that moment keep moving.
Manchester United have lost out to Real Madrid over Sao Paulo defender Cicinho. He signs up with Real Madrid, the Yankees of the Soccer World.
How things are looking in the NYRR Club B teams standings - 1 Urban Athletics 107, 2 Brooklyn RRC 86, 3 Hellgate RR 65 - safe to say that the men have things sewn up nicely.
Thanks to Jorge from CT for the update on the Hot Puerto Rican race - “Kenyan runner George Kirwa Misoi was taken to the Hospital in Bayamon Puerto Rico after finishing the Abraham Rosas 10 K last Sunday due to dehydratation. His blood pressure was down, but later, the runner was release from the hospital at 2 AM Monday morning with no complications.”
08/23
It’s Official - the fastest time ever recorded on the Reservoir was ran by Greg Meyer ("I know I can't run that fast anymore!") 6:50 - Well Greg no-one else has ran that fast before or now! A legend! There will be an official attempt to better this time later this year, and the women's record that is currently held by Alemtsehay - see the archives for her results.
Coming this Saturday/Sunday to the Store - The Mizuno Party following the Manhattan Half Marathon starts at 10-AM with Refreshments, special pricing on all full priced Mizuno footwear, special guest speaker, giveaways, and more! So come on over after the race - but save me the Cinnamon raisins! In fact we read inthe mailbag (As we were writing this), “if i beat ya there next time, i'll hide one for you. everyone craves them-- tell your bagel-buying buds that c&r rings maybe party-preferable to an abundance of garlic/everything rings--as if we all didn't smell badly enough!!” In the mailbag from someone who has a nickname, but it is not allowed to be used as it is a family nickname. Durr to me who did not know what a CR ring was! The mail continues…“it would make me self-conscious to speak to anyone insomewhat close quarters (anything closer than a quick wave from across the park) after having downed one of those ripe, stick-between your teeth little rings.” Must've been someone who was there last Saturday...
Anyway - regardless the MIZUNO party will be fun and I am looking forward to seeing who they have as the Guest Speaker… intrigue upon intrigue!
One intrigue is where the Marathon Stars will end up this year… one more sign ups - Kyomi tells us, “By the way, Naoko Takahashi officially announced today that she would run Tokyo.” So there you have it, the $million$ dollar runner, the first ever Sub 2:20-woman will headline the field. Obviously the hottest name on any race director’s note pad is Paula Radcliffe, will she run a Fall Marathon, and if so where?
Cigna Healthcare Corporate 5-K - A Westchester outing - 1. Alemtsehay Misganaw, 25, WTC ETH 16:15 2. Tatyana Pozdnyakova, 50, UKR 16:39 (!!) 3. Atalelech Ketema, 22, WTC ETH 17:05 4. Leteyesus Berhe, 27, WTC ETH 17:16 I was running on Monday in the park when Lete came flying by at 200mph

1. Alene Emere, 23, ETH 14:22 2. Guor Majak, 20, Concord, NH 15:01 3. Paul Spaghetti Mwangi, 38, KEN 15:02

RandySax replies, “A correction...when I saw you and Jerry at 90th street that was only two loops...so, you guys were cooking well ahead of this swiss cheese slow poke. I at least got in the full 20M though.” (I bet he typed that bit with a smug smile) He also adds, “There's this great coffee place called Joe on Waverly off of 6th in the West Village.” as a tip on where to caffeinate downtown . Good for Randy, no way I was looking for 20 that morning.

My own reco‘ is Raisin and Nut loaf bread from Eli‘s Vinegar Factory Bakery - The yum.

Here‘s a thought - No Stephanie Hodge at the race this past weekend! What a shocker! Has she disappeared from the racing scene completely, or has she found some marathon off the scanner? We hear there was a Harriers wedding in Denver, and that is why Diane K was missing - could Steph have got married? Would not surprise me?

I get an email from Adam about his diet, “I don’t eat any fried food.. Then two lines later - breakfast, eggs n bacon - right!

Any road not that my diet is fabbo - I am on a rice kick at the moment, and in fact made some bad rice last week (my adding a tablespoon of Nutmeg instead of Cinnamon, and by using long grain brown instead of basmati is not to be recommended) so I had to make it again last night to check it was not as bad as it tasted using the same ingredients with adjustments… I could happily eat rice every single day - like the Kenyan guy who used to eat Spaghetti Bolognese every day, Muturi.. Ran a 2:08 so he must have been onto something there!

From Chucky China, “Click on the black and white photo on the main page, you will see our ‘quick’ marriage photos.” Thanks!
Here’s the stuff Paula Radcliffe takes - could it give you a 2:20 experience? Kanski, Kanski ekki - as they say in Rackajack City, Iceland.
A helium shoe?
UK news - Mark Lewis-Francis has split from his long-time coach Steve Platt to join forces with Tony Lester. Eton-based Lester trains British athletes Marlon Devonish and Tim Benjamin.
Sad to hear about the guy who died in Central Park after being hit by a cyclist in a time trial race last Sunday.
Jorge from CT sends us Puerto Rican news - “Gilbert Okari won the Abraham Rosas 10k in Toa Baja, Puerto Rico yesterday in 28:40. he earned $ 8000. Results: 1; Gilbert Okari 28:40 KEN 2. Wilson Kiprotich 28:41 KEN 3. John Korir 28:45 KEN 4. Robert Cheruiyot 29:04 KEN 5. Barus Benson 29:06 KEN 6. Julius Kibet 29:13 KEN 7. Reuben Chebii 29:15 KEN 8. Paul Koskei 29:28 KEN 9. Simion Kamau 29:45 KEN 10.Tibebu Yenew 30:00 ETH” Thanks Jorge. It was a tough course, hot and humid. And I rather like the name of the guy who finished tenth, Tibebu Tanser, could be a replacement for Toby.
Gotta hate that new Snack on commercial from ChexMex, what’s this next advertising campaign of ‘less fat means healthy’ - have you ever seen what junk they put in those things? Less fat? Give me a flippin’ banana split, more fat and better for you than a bunch of Hydrogenated Fats guised with wrappings of E-numbers.
Seen running in the park yesterday morning with a certain stiffness was Chubbs - an honest working stiffness, we both agreed that we are not upping the mileage of our long runs too much - else we’ll be cripples. I should moan, I was sitting on a stone pillar with swollen calves.
The Hokkaido Marathon announces the fastest for this weekend - Koji Shimizu 2:08:28 & Samson Kandie (KEN) 2:08:31, with our sentimental fav - Moges Taye (ETH) 2:09:21 & for La Femmes Masako Chiba 2:21:45
Tom emails in about a certain Central Park member running in the park, “Pretty hard to cheat when you are dressed like a highway marker” Laughed at that one! Talking team colors in the Club Teams all these guys ran past me in Orange with Blue lining, I thought they must be Central Park TC’s newest members (I can hardly keep track these days) then we later discovered it was actually the Manhattan TC’s new uniform.
Certain music for certain moods - whenever I listen to Miles Davis I can never get motivated to get out of the chair! I mean take his Flamenco Sketches for example, the mere word conjures up images of jumping round the room clicking one’s heels…. The event I was getting out of the seat for was the Five Borough Marathon Celebration Committee with Percy Sutton, Jack Rudin, Ted Corbitt, Gary & Jane Muhrke, Nina Kuscsik, George & Shay Hirsch, Lynn & Dave Blackstone, Brian Crawford, Jim Rafferty, Rina ’Rusty’ Kanokogi, and Mark Brecker…. And the guest of honor was George Spitz. Mary Queen of the NYRR was also there, and I listened to a very entertaining set of speeches from Sutton (Who was the three time Boro President and very instrumental in the five boros concept and had completed three workouts this day prior to the party!), Spitz who is running for a Council Seat and who has run 29-marathons, and Rusty who brought Judo to the Olympics.

George Spitz, and Ted Corbitt, the Father of American Modern Long Distance Running, and ‘52 Olympian. If you are interested in George Spitz‘s campaign simply click here.

BBC poll on Top 10 Greatest Moments in Athletics - Thanks to George H for forwarding this from blighty - “At the weekend, the BBC showed the results of the above poll. The results were 1 Michael Johnson - unprecedented sprint double in Atlanta 1996 2 Jesse Owens - 1936 Berlin Olympics 3 Jonathon Edwards - Triple Jump world record from World Champs -1995 4 Daley Thompson - Decathlon from 1984 LA Olympics 5 Kelly Holmes - double gold from Athens Olympics - 2004 6 Seb Coe/Steve Ovett - 800/1500 metres from Moscow Olympics -1980 7 Roger Bannister - 1st 4sub 4 minute mile - 1954 8 Kathy Freeman - 400 metres gold - Sydney - 2000 9 Bob Beamon - Long Jump - Mexico Olympics -1968 10 Linford Christie - 100 metres gold - Barcelona Olympics - 1992
Four "non-british" entries in the Top 10, including the top 2. I am sure I think of a few countries who wouldn't pick anyone not connected to that country! I think one of the reasons why Michael Johnson did so well, is that he is a regular (and very competent) commentator on the BBC at the major athletics meetings. He is also not afraid to have a go at the British athletes, knowing that later in the week he could have to sit next to them in the TV studio.” Thanks, very interesting! Impartial it is! For me though Paula‘s 2:15 HAS to be in there, I mean that was off this planet. Viren‘s tumble and second Gold of the 72 Olympics? Emil‘s three Gold?

An article on the Achilles Track Club - from the Berlin Marathon Site.
Speaking of which there is a NZ website that John W forwarded to me, and the first thing I noticed they put “Great Interview with Martin Keino” in referring to the Keino RW story ran last week - thanks for the thumbs up!
At the 5th Ave - Joining Webb on the starting line will be Rui Silva of Portugal, the bronze medalist in the 1500 meters at the 2004 Olympics and the 2005 IAAF World Championships; and Craig Mottram of Australia, the bronze medalist in the 5000 meters at the 2005 IAAF World Championships. The women’s field will be lead by two-time U.S. Olympian Shayne Culpepper of Louisville, Colorado, 2004 U.S. Olympian Carrie Tollefson of St. Paul, Minnesota, and former NCAA All-American Amy Mortimer of West Roxbury, Massachusetts.
News from the streets - “You don't chug this beer. At 100 dollars a bottle the Samuel Adams Utopias beer is more suited to being sniffed and swirled like a fine wine. The high priced beer was served at the Hop Devil Grill in Manhattan's East Village last night. It was served in shot glasses at 12-dollars a pop.” Hm, not me. Heineken tastes just fine as it is.
“Boulder is great, today we were at the Pearl street Mile, was fun. Luminita Talpos won, ahead of 60.000 Japanese runners!” From Starbucks in CO.
An article that says a lot from Steve Cram, but doesn’t really say anything - about the Flop of the UK athletes, generally.
26-million Pounds! Chelsea FC’s latest signing!
Zurich Wrap - Komen Daniel Kipchircir KEN 3:30.49 rebounded to win at Zurich after a disappointing WC where he failed to qualify for the finals.. In the 3000 it was business as usual - Bekele Kenenisa ETH 7:32.59 2 Saïdi-Sief Ali ALG 7:37.56 3 Mottram Craig AUS 7:38.03.… And Mosop Moses KEN 7:43.52 was a lot farther back when Bekele was not running as a ‘team’… Shaheen Saif Saaeed QAT 8:02.69 did not get his 7:48 but he did win by a ‘mile’ and get a soaking in the water pit on the last lap - #2 Kipruto Brimin KEN 8:10.69, good Euro result in #5 Mohamed Mustafa SWE 8:16.92

Proving her 800m win was no fluke - Calatayud Zulia CUB 1:59.16, Maria M. lost her amazing 12-year-long winning streak finishing 4th in 2:00.22
And in the women’s 3000m there was an absence of Ethiopian Dibabas allowing Jamal Maryam Yusuf BRN 8:29.45 to win from Adere Berhane ETH 8:31.89.… Arron Christine FRA 10.99 was only 4th losing her claim to the gold as Campbell Veronica JAM 10.85 took her 3/100th of a sec revenge on WC Lauren W in the W100m. So it is Lebedeva Tatyana RUS 14.94 winning the triple jump that alone remains in the hunt for the jackpot.

E-headline: “When Courtney Love said she'd been clean and sober for 365 days, apparently didn't she mean consecutively.” And wow has Garth Brooks ballooned up.
Next week - the hoogie yah-ma Yawnah - 7 - A.M. Start for the Manhattan Half…. That is early with a capital dawn crack.
My vacation - A wonderful time, so nice and relaxing… so sad to end! So many little things to notice, and so many memories to stay… The Handy Hill Creamery. A feature in there.
Yobes Ondieki "The rest of the world realised the importance of the sport and heavily invested in it while we remained stagnant bragging that we had more than enough natural talent,"

He must be talking about how much Ethiopia pours into their athletic program no? Mind you there are some good points in this article. The one about the scholarships is certainly true.

At the Club Teams - a typical 75 deg., 82% humidity weather - Well done to the Urbanoso’s who showed up and shined - a great team effort.

Congrats to the overall winners -Abram Assfa & Alemtsehay Misganaw. Who is Abram? A non-existent name at the site known as Google… So a spell check? It turns out he is Abrha Assfa who ran 30+ in the Kidney 10k this year.

The teams really were top notch this year - if you look at the standard that the clubs brought out - wow!
Westchester from Warren St, to Central Park for the women’s teams, And Westchester, West Side, and Manhattan TC for the men… with Ryan Grote as their newest member, a former legend of the local scene, another legend there was George Milic displaying his 14kt gold chain “I saw you at Falmouth, you looked b-a-d” (as in slow) - nice pre-race pep talk George - like ya too, Michelle Bleakley - Yeah coffee, John Samsel who never stopped running for a good hour after the race was over, Paul ‘Spaghetti’ Mwangi “4th, I‘ve never been 4th before - I guess I over trained,” Monsieur Mileage who was running, and seen running the next day, but not seen running past the finishing line chip mat? The newly weds - Chucky China & Cece the new triathlete demon, We saw Cristina A. who had already done a mind boggling amount of miles that morning, Luis Trias - doing great although he has just started training, Rachid Tbani - the biggest believable story on the start line about ‘training’ (“I’m only running ten miles a week these days…” Yeah, right, we believe you). Mgee who I stood behind at the starting line Warren Streets former 800m star…

I like this day because you get a chance to watch the race after the race, so to speak (if you are a man) - the women’s event was an Ethiopian runaway…. It was blues all along for the WTC & WS teams until the mellow yellow of Michelle came along. Then along came Erin leading the Flyers! I saw Lily who always looks like she is having so much fun when she races, on that note thanks to Antonio, Lily, and Tim who sent in emails today saying they voted for me - kool!

After the race I went over to the CPTC gathering to talk with the Amazing Alan Rube & Zoom along (whom I missed talking to as she was off in all directions with the nippers), and then talking to people I missed the Flyers gathering before I realized I had to get up to the Store….

From the park to the Madison - ran into Rick P, of the Flyers & the Wedza Group running on the up & up, with Letisha - I went to Starbucks with them after the race on the way to the store social…. Glad to say the coffee at Starbucks tasted as good as I expected it to - one of the good things with that chain, one of the dependable things in life!

At the store (no cinnamon raisins!) we overheard the discussion with Danny the Dollarman and Costanza the Store mascot who was out supporting, “OzPaul had a problem with the toilet and #2, that’s why he didn’t run better than that…” “yeah, “ added Chubby, “He was coming out with some excuse about a hang-over, can ya believe that one?” Jeff revealed that his landlady in Wisconsin was non other than Suzy Favor Hamilton, “Kind’ve cool having her come round to paint the window frames!”

Anil was ‘again’ trying to set up Danny Dollarman with a girl from the Harriers with a name beginning with Mollie or Melanie, or something who was wearing a white hat. Anil quickly went to get the girl (and her friends) some beers, Costanza muttered something about a step ladder, and Jeremy (the course record holder for the Round-the-Block challenge) looked out the window. RandySax disappeared through the door without any chocolate, and Cara nodded her head. A customer who had come in for some running shoes, sat down ate a bagel and promptly said, “This is the first time I have been in this store, I live across the road, I never knew what I was missing, see ya next week for breakfast - can I bring the wife?“ Anil’s ears pricked up, Who was it that said he needed a Dating for Dummies phrase book…. Costanza?

Anyway Danny The D was wearing a Harriers Singlet and was heard to say, “The NYH need me if they are ever going to be any good again….” Danny Cap’s eyebrows sailed over that one and someone else choked on a bagel… Edy came in, she placed 5th - well done, and was seen trying on some blue shoes, then Susan from the Harriers came in with huge arm muscles….Meanwhile Chubbs wants a nickname change, “I want to be known as the Chubby Bull from now on as I can not keep my weight down, I fluctuate like a yo-yo!” CJ the wife though looked pretty fit are they eating at the same table? “It’s amazing - I hit every end of the scale and never stay anywhere!” Then Chubbs took out the pace calendar to start musing on what pace he’d hit for the next week’s 1/2M - the races never stop!

’Stanz starts telling us about this Mexican Rabbit who won(?) NYC, “Siva, that was it.” Well when we told him that German S. was not a rabbit the years he won ‘Stanz says, “Well I could be wrong…” really? Would never have guessed!

Coming up on October 2nd - The Twin Cities Marathon is the first U.S. qualifying marathon for the 2008 Olympic Trials, and the only qualifier of 2005. Seems like a bad deal - why not have NYC as a qualifier along with Chicago?
On Sunday, in the heat index of 95- we decided to go for a long run. Chubby & I had made the plan and met up at the Store at 9. Cara was also going to run, then Sean Fortune turned up, RandySax, Sabrina, and OzPaul - a veritable breakfast club jogged over to CP. Anyway then OzPaul decided to go and meet Toni, and we split into two groups with Chubby, Sean, and I running 15. The conversation got less and less as we ran on and the heat took its toll. At the end of the first 6-miles we met up with Ozpaul, who was now going to run with us. We wnext week can I come along?”), OzPaul “I got dizzy and cut it short after that loop” (it was that kind of day - everyone looked beat up in the extreme humidity) and Randy - well Randy was doing 18-miles but somehow he was stranding at 90th ST hanging when Chubby and I closed our 15-miles, so either he jet powered something from something, or also cut things short, or maybe he was doing the mileage with minis tops en route - I hope he was not offended when I made some Swiss Cow references before we set off; but for those of us who have stayed for extended stays in the land of fatty cheeses and chocolates I sympathize with trying to keep a solid diet over there.

We bumped into Edy at the finish and she kindly offered up her Gatorade, I said no as I was sure she wanted it herself, but I did see Chubby gulping, “Hey, I too was getting the shakes at the end…” It certainly was one of those dog days… we got back to the store and about 11:10 Chubby & Cara wanted to leave but the staff (for the 11-o’clock opening) had yet to arrive!

Then I jumped on my bike and set off for Brooklyn, (God the outer boros, how I love traveling to brooklyn!) I sympathized with the triathletes as I pedaled down Park Ave, then tried to get over the QueensBoro Bridge - finally after a Police car caught my attention by flashing its lights, honking and generally moving in my direction, a kind officer gave me an escort to the bicycle path - gotta love NYC’s finest, he took me round the bend, up the street and even parked at an angle and waved me onto the path(!)

I was visiting Shawn & Kenny (not a gay couple on the fringe of Williamsberg, as most who read this website know that Shawn is actually a ‘She’). In fact the last time I visited was the famous dog mucus story - this week’s episode; including the graphic of our Chef Kenny explaining he’d just scooped up the dog’s poop in the park with a bag that the cat Maggie (one of four no less) had bitten a hole in, “I had this warm feeling in my hand and then I realized the bag was up my wrist!” I cautiously bit on my cinnamon raisin after that I can tell you whilst drinking flagons of good Puerto Rican coffee to bring life back into my depleted body.

Well you might it was pretty yucky of me to hop off a long run, and onto an 8-mile bike ride, and into someone’s living room, but we did have a cold shower stop before the breakfast, nothing like turning up sweaty saying “Can I borrow your shower Pleez?” But in my defense Shawn had asked me to come at a logistically pressing hour, and hating to be late I mused it was better to be there, shower there, than stop at the gym as planned en route, then get sweaty again cycling.

The ride home was uneventful apart from the bit when I decide to ride over the Pulaski Bridge and not use the Bike path - firstly some man in the middle stopped me as his truck had broken down and asked me to carry his Jerry Can to the gasoline station back down and below the bridge and buy him $a few$ dollars of gasoline - I passed on that one by answering him in French and shooting him a dumb tourist glance, then over the other side a taxi came and drove at my speed with the driver (over on the other side of the cab) shouting something to me… So I was bending down trying to hear, and he was shouting, and we were collectively causing a road hazard, and all the cars were swerving round us and blowing their horns… what a palaver! Finally we get to the stop lights and he turns down his Arabic music station and says, “Bikes are not supposed to be up there on the bridge, didn’t you know?” Well funnily enough there is not a sign that says this on the road that approaches, but instead of saying that I asked him the quickest route to getting up on the Queensboro Bridge…

And on that note (as I was cycling over the Q-bridge feeling happy that I won’t be running over there in November) I remembered the cool race that has sadly disappeared - the Roosevelt Island 10km - the first ever NYRR race I ran in 1999! A flat fast 10k in NY City - bring it back.com!

Amatrice-Configno near Rome - Tough course, Baldini won last year. Selected results (8.5km) Men's race 1. Sergiy Lebid UKR 23:43 2. Rodgers Rop KEN 23:53 3. Solomon Bushendich KEN 23:58 ( was developed in the HATC camp by Starbucks and his training plan - did the typical thank you and bye when started running well).

Women's race 1. Rose Jepchumba KEN 27:59 2. Rosalba Console ITA 28:05 3. Salomè Jepchumba KEN 29:18

Why is it that Sheffield in the UK gets 17,000 and NYC gets less than 4,000 when staging a T&F meet? Kelly Holmes made a dramatic helicopter entrance (how times change with a couple of medals tied round your gizzards) to finish 9th & last, 2:06, in her final UK race - as usual the organizers failed to put any stars in this event (bar Kelly) so Briton‘s took the top five places with athletes who would be hard pressed to get into a Zurich type meet… Mizuno’s Double world 5,000m and 10,000m champion Tirunesh Dibaba held off the challenge of her sister Ejegayehu to win the 5,000m. Dibaba had hoped to get close to the world record, but she was hampered by a stomach problem and clocked 14 mins 51.79 secs. Her sister, the only other athlete to go Sub 15 was two ticks back.

Australia's Craig Mottram took the two miles with a dominant display in 8mins 11.28secs, a new national record. #2. Boniface Songok (Kenya) 8:12.86 3. Shadrack Korir (Kenya) 8:19.53 4. Adrian Blincoe (New Zealand) 8:21.00 5. Joseph Ebuya (Kenya) 8:23.21 6. Ian Dobson (United States) 8:29.30

Fine home win - Men's Mile 1. Michael East (Britain) 3:52.50 2. Laban Rotich (Kenya) 3:52.55 3. Bernard Lagat (United States) 3:52.89 4.

Thurs/Friday morning - Runner's World story on Gilbert Okari, the winning man on the roads right now...

Two-time World Marathon Champion and event record-holder Jaoaud Gharib of Morocco, who recently defended his crown at the IAAF World Championships in Helsinki, has joined the field for the ING New York City Marathon 2005, it was announced by New York Road Runners.
In addition, top Romanian marathoner Nuta Olaru has also entered the ING New York City Marathon 2005, which will take place on Sunday, November 6, 12 weeks after the World Championships.

***News from Tanzania shoe4africa camp! "Did you know that Christopher Isegwe is the full product of Shoe4Africa!" The same Christopher who won Tanzania's First WC marathon medal!***

New York Road Runners Voting Season is soon back. Should be in your mailbag - thanks for the response so far!

Alan Webb to run next month in the 5th Ave Mile. Perhaps the 5th Ave will pick up to being the comp. it was back in the Nineties?
08/15
Falmouth was a hoot! The Simba got her 10th consec. road win in 2005, and now she takes a short break (via NYC) and then to Boulder before emersing herself in the training for NYC. Expect to see Okari in PR next week. I was surprised to see, or should I say, hear, that Sang (who finished 4th) can speak aand the Bahamas team are out of the relay and not past ajor road races now, or nine?? Well we can remember Rotterdam, Puerto Rico, The NYRR Mini, Beach to Beacon, Dutch 30k champs, Glasgow 10k, Manchester 10k...
Beyond economics - talk of athletes switching countries often centers around cash - fair enough... however consider that Shaheen is not doing the double at Helsinki due to the fact he wants to save himself for a world record attempt at Brussels, this over winning a (possible) medal for his country.. this is not economics, I think Shaheen was pretty wealthy coming into this race. Never mind, his exclusion in the 5000m (surely with a 12:46 pr) left a space for the last qualifier, good news for Boniface Kiprop of Uganda. Karl Keirstad will be happy to see that - Karl is sponsoring the Kiprop running camp Uganda.
New York Road Runners Voting Season is soon back. For the NYRR readers; please vote, and if you think I have done a worthy job then please include me in the tick box - thx!

Next week is the Urban Summer Holidays - the web site will be sleeping for the week. News returns the Monday of the 22nd
World Championship talk - Much ado about Webb’s mid race surge.. What’s new, an athlete tries to break open the field. If he had gone any slower with the surge a significant field-break would not have occurred - if he continued at the pace they were running he would still have been out-kicked - it was a mere no-win situation (in our opinion). I don’t think it was a ’courageous or legendary’ move as some people were calling it, just what his only option was given the opening 800m. If I was advising him; it was obvious that the race was going to dawdle for two loops until someone got antsy and made a move…. So looking at Webb versus the other runners I would have suggested to him to go hard straight from the gun, and use all the 3:48-mile potential that he has. I think that would have made it a better race for himself. Not criticizing as I am here and he is over there doing it - just throwing in my two cents. That way I think I he would have got a top four at worst.

By the way I just want to say that the migration of athletes I was harping on about is only for athletes who jump for the $$, I understand them but I think objectively it is bad for the sport... mind you if I was intheir place I may well do the same... Runners like Wilson Kipketer, Lagat on the otherhand are people who move for genuine reasons and are not at all included in this zip... I just don't like to see a race where the runners have new names each week.. Imagine the next world championships if Kenyan Steeplechasers are farmed out to Qatar, who could have 4, Bahrain - who could have three, Kenya.. you get the picture!

Thanks to tattooed Terry for the Fwd: A look at Paula’s Gear - first off I totally disagree with this - Sports scientist Nick Morgan of the Sports Injury and Human Performance Centre at Lilleshall, said: "Sports science would see no great benefit in wearing sunglasses. But Paula has got to concentrate on every fine detail during her race and if it helps her do that, then it can only be a good thing."

Sunglasses are often ‘touted’ by journalists as being fashion items, nonsense - commonsense. The amount of dirt flying around is horrendous to start with, then as we invariably squint the facial muscles, then the shoulders tense up….I could go on.

But pleez - I mean Paula is doing stuff nobody on the planet has ever done, so she should be the only expert on this one!

Faith Hill’s ‘like we never loved at all‘(?) sounds as complete rip off of Dylans “I believe in you’ for the opening few bars… criminal.
World Champs - Awesome cinematography of the men’s 200m, wow - and how those guys fly! 1st to 4th for America.. And Olympic Champ Shawn Crawford back at home!!

5000 - Songok and Kipchoge looking as thought they can match the Ethiopians, and Mottram looking ominous too. My guess between those three…. Gebre looked somewhat tired…
Very happy that Brian Clay won the decathlon - a very nice chap….. And Urban Athletics star performer, OzPaul asks, “'Ran like a shark' What the hell does that mean?” It means you killed everyone on the track!

Madison Marathon Mob workout - a few of the athletes stepping up to the plate as the important weeks set in for the NYC & Chicago-ians as time becomes an all important factor. Chris C really, really focused - so much so he kept on going when the 36-minutes was done! Adam - getting back there…. Moses - hats off to him, Todd doing his stuff putting in a strong effort on the U‘hill, Michael settling in to a rhythm, Mary just storming, Traci & Paola working really well and burning the hill. Parks pushing down the hill. Paul in his zone and giving the required effort.

Yuen clocking in right, Toni with a touch of the stitch, Lynn working great, Kathy too getting it done properly. Ivan not being fooled to cut to the rest - he was sharp! And Carrie did really well starting off on the road to speed… Stan with a touch of dizziness but did great up to that point…. Nice to see how the athletes are progressing, and the work is the all-important factor. Even the ones coming into the session with tired legs….

So I am talking about how it is now the time to take running more seriously, stretch and hydrate, look after your diet etc and I get back to the store and the place stinks of beer - Danny the Dollar man & Anil are obviously waiting for someone… the first girl who walks in from the group they do the worst pick-up job since Butch Reynolds spun off his one -liners back in the bell-bottomed days, I was going to repeat a few lines but I’ll spoil it for the next female who walks in there, cos‘ you can be rest assured they‘ll be used again. She loses interest faster than a brick through a wet paper bag, Anil tries a few more lines tossing out a fishing net the size of Cuba…. and she scoots out the store… that’s just what the group needs!
