Well Tattooed Terry informs us that the place we were at in London is where Mick Jagger used to live with Marianne Faithful. Here’s Stephan, who owns the house, on our mode of transport - we hired these bright yellow bikes.
The good news was when we went for Pizza we didn’t have to worry too much about anyone stealing the damn things…..Coincidences abound - Jonnie, my friend whose summer bbq’s are legendary on the balcony of his lower east side manhattan apartment, is a big Chelsea football supporter, so I emailed him to tell him I’d be in the area - and it turns out his mum lives there on Cheyne!!

Talking of Africa, what is Eldo Lise up to? Remember her? “I was up north on a small island - called quadra island with friends on the weekend- or the near death weekend as I like to call it. now I'm not a big fan of hiking- found that out the hard way on a 21 day trek thru nepal once...but a friend and I go off hiking anyways while others are out cycling on sunday. it's a steep, rocky path for 2 hours up- and wet because of all the rain. now the good thing is that the path is so steep that neither of us are saying much (i.e. breathing quite heavily)- I think this is what saves us in that thru we hear the first warning growl and rustling after an hour of climbing.."jesus, mary"...says my irish friend, then we hear the second growl...forget the jesus mary my protestant bones are thinking...this ain't no chipmunk...we gotta go.. it's british columbia after all...and it's a toss up between a bear or cougar in these parts. At this point I remember that I'm carrying fine prociutto meats for our lunch. "jesus..mary- dump those!" - my reply is - are you kidding- do you know how much it cost..plus nothing like leaving a trail to find us..so we hightail down as quickly as one can with our heart rates off the chart. turns out it was probably a cougar- those are nasty cats hungry or not! afterwards, my friend said- well I've been told you should do something heart stopping every day to live life to it's fullest...yeah and have a heart attack before you hit 40!” Youch! Sharp teeth ain‘t funny, unless they‘re nailed to a rug.
NYRR Club Championship league is looking exciting this year with GNY leading MCNY by two points with CPTC in third for the women, The Flyers are in fifth!! And in the men’s Warren St and West Side are way ahead with a scant two points separating them.. in the B div Urban Athletics lead the way!
Markos Geneti and Gebre-Egziabher Gebremariam added to the Reebok meet at Icahn on June 11th - this is looking to be a classic meet! Add Amy Rudolph too!Visit www.ReebokGrandPrix.com for tickets, more information and updated news on additional athletes, or call 1-877-RBK-GP05. They are cheap two - for the price of one Stones ticket you can take a family of six! Inspire with fire.
Track Night - with 48-degrees, rain and a breeze the soccer players were absent - yah!
Peter2 getting the wheez gone after a couple of loops, R2 down for a change, The Commander running smooth, Robin from the Harriers, ChuckyChina with not much to say, Anne trying out the brooks, Jose running easy, Cristina going well, Kwasi talking buffets eating breakfasts, AmexChris on track, RandySax, “A U-shaped shop is the way to go.” DavidG ready for that 5%, Rick PR‘d by 6-mins on Sunday! DavidP tight hams, Anil “I‘ve something to say, later…” Yeah, Queen of the Harriers picking it up when she wished, AmexLee, Cruiser battling the winds, and Jonathan aiming for the ‘stams.’
Suneet sent his excuse…“Was actually going to return to the track today!!! But the weather put me off...yeah, I'm a wimp, I know. Leg is on the mend - gone from limpy to laggard but lightning is a long way away yet. I am clearly deconditioned. Seems like I have lost my stamina for distance running (according to the textbooks, my muscles are depleted of the glycogen stores they build up when you do regular long runs). So I have a lot of work to do! Off to do a killer progressive hill workout on the treadmill…” Besides he’s off to hike in Hanoi!

Suddenly the hottest marathon of the fall, press wise -

Kenya names its squad, provisional for the WC Marathon - Paul Tergat, Martin Lel, Jimmy Muhindi, Joseph Riri, Wilson Onsare, Salim Kipsang, Robert Cheboror, Paul Biwott, Benjamin Maiyo and William Kipsang.
Women: Susan Chepkemei, Beatrice Omwanza, Margaret Okayo, Rita Jeptoo, Selina Kosgei and Hellen Kimtai.Tergat has not confirmed his participation interest as yet to run, but has also been asked to help as a team manager…interestingly enough you’ll note that Felix Limo is not there, after one bad(?) result, third in Rotterdam after four 2:06’s, they ignore him…. And Catherine Ndereba has a an auto slot if she wants it from the IAAF as defending champion.
Home team’s squad fore the Helsinki World Champs - Marathon:
Janne Holmén, Jomala IK / IF Åland, 2:17:50, Athens Olympics; PB 2:12:10 Berlin 2003),
Tuomo Lehtinen, Turun Urheiluliitto, 2:16:45, Rome 2005,
Yrjö Pesonen, Joensuun Kataja, 2:17:42, Frankfurt 2004.
Women - Maija Oravamäki, Oulun Pyrintö, 2:39:37, Frankfurt 2004
Just to prove I do know how to work, here’s a picture of us at work in Hyde Park. We are interviewing Huw Lobb who last year won $40,000 for beating a horse to the finishing line over a 22-mile race, he is also a 2:14 marathoner and going to the World Champs this year. See the interesting interview technique? A first - we get him to run on the spot. Stephan standing with the microphone, and me trying to think of prompt lines to talk about relevant things. The other soundman, Dug, looks like he is stamping on a worm.. Probably was.

From the NYRR,“New York, May 24, 2005—Olympians Colleen De Reuck of the United States, Benita Johnson of Australia, and Lornah Kiplagat of the Netherlands will highlight a stellar international field at the 2005 Circle of Friends New York Mini 10K in Central Park on Saturday, June 11. Founded in 1972, the Mini is the world’s original women-only road race and is an official event of New York Road Runners. Circle of Friends, a program from the American Legacy Foundation that helps women quit smoking and raises awareness about the impact of tobacco-related diseases, became the Mini’s title sponsor in 2004 and renewed its agreement this year.”
Marion Jones will compete in a 100m race in the Netherlands this weekend despite talk of European snub. I guess her appearance fee must be a bus ticket…. Hengelo is the venue.
It shocks me how popular reality TV continues to be, and how people are fascinated to waster their own time to watch a group of normal people spend their time trying to get somewhere (which I can easily understand that part!)… I mean after a night of watching a couple hours of reality TV what do you have for the next day? Reality?
05/24
U2’s new Vertigo song sounds very mainstream, and not at all unique.. As one used to expect from that band….
Speaking of heights, back in the US of A… and this time I did something about Virgin Atlantic airplanes. It started with the Heathrow Express, well that came after spending the morning at Joyce Smith’s house - she who won the London twice, and ran at the Olympics in ‘72 & ‘84... We went to do an interview and my sound guy forgot the mic… Luckily Joyce’s husband had a small computer thing that had to do, then the batteries went.. After that it was back to Cheyne Row and the mansion to do some work on the script, oh yes - so later after dropping Stephane (project leader) off at Hugh Jones’ house I took the ‘Express’… we stopped! So much for the express, then comes “Apologies, we seem to be having some delay, sorry about that folks, we’ll get you there as soon as we can..” So the next time I pay for an express ride am I allowed to say, “Well sorry folks, but I’m a couple of pounds too short, my apologies for that…” Yeah right! So I get to the airline and check in, I want to take everything as hand baggage and the lady says, “You’re a couple of pounds over the limit” So I tell her, “Let me just take my coat out of the bag (Even though I am wearing it)” and what I do, on the other side of the counter that she can’t see is simply empty half of the possessions onto the ground and re-weigh the bag - “Good Love, that’s fine!” She tells me, as I bend down and scoop all the things back into the bag.. I was on a roll!
I got to the check in desk and waited till almost everyone had boarded… then when I walked onto the plane and those puny little seats caught my eye I merely swizzed my direction and threw my bag onto a Business class seat, sat down, and hey presto I had given myself a free upgrade - that’s the only way to fly Virgin.. In business it is actually a decent airline!
CP’s runner up - Athletics South Africa; Hendrick Ramaala, after his outstanding performances in the New York and London marathons, will lead South Africa at the IAAF World Marathon Championships in Helsinki.
Ramaala (CGA), together with Gert Thys (Griqualand West), Shadrack Hoff (AGN) and Makhosonke Fika (WPA), make for a super strong squad.
Whatever next? Athletes on Ebay! Thanks to Kurt Le Vert for the Fwd. When we clicked $3.5K was ‘reserve not met‘ for one month.. Pretty damn expensive advertising!
In the San Diego Marathon, June 04, there is
a prize structure totaling more than $200,000, so its seems odd that the winners each receive only $20,000... And first Master $1K…..Talking Money - $100 to see the Stones? Jezz, I saw them in 1980’s, on their so called farewell tour, for under 10-quid… how times have changed. If they do ten songs that‘d be…. Oh well.
An ankle injury will prevent 2002 French Open champion Serena Williams from playing at Roland Garros this year… all up to Venus now…
News from Starbucks, “After the Britannic Asset Management 10 K last week in Glasgow where Lornah, Hilda and Doris finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd, it was this week again a 10 K for Lornah and Hilda. Both were invited to run the Bupa Great Manchester Run, a race over 10 K with 20,000 participants in Manchester, UK. The Women started 5 minutes ahead of the Men's field.
“A small group with Lornah, Hilda, Derarte Tulu and Jelena Prokopcuka ran the first kilometer in 2:57. 3 K went in 9:15 with Lornah, Hilda and Jelena way ahead of the rest of the field. At 5 K Lornah and Hilda ran away from Jelena and ran together till 8 K. At 8 K Jelena came back so Lornah started to push the pace and ran the 8th kilometer in 3 minutes. At 8,5 K Hilda had to let Lornah go. At 9 K Hilda was passed by Jelena. Lornah won in 31:28 with Jelena Prokopcuka 2nd in 31:35 ( NR ). Hilda finished 3rd in a new PB of 31:46, well ahead of 4th and 5th finishers Charlotte Dale ( 32:51 ) and Derartu Tulu ( 32:53 ).
“Doris Changeywo ran the Marikenloop in Nijmegen. The Marikenloop is a Women's Race over 5 kilometer and organised by the same organisation of the Seven Hills 15 K. Doris started pretty fast and after 1 kilometer she was well ahead of the rest of the field. She won the race in a course record of 16:23. Dutch Kristijna Loonen was 2nd in 16:52.
Next weekend Lornah, Hilda and Doris will run in the FBK Games in Hengelo, the Dutch GP1. They will run the 5,000 meter.”
A big thanks to Haidee Islip, Maria Dunn, Nick Jesdanun, & Paulo Flor for donating their shoes. Eric Vermilya too. All from the NY Flyers!

At the Kidney Run Craig Mottram ran a superb world class 28:28 to beat Ramaala 28:51, with The Senator a second behind in third. These are great times for a course that traditionally is not so fast for men.Alemtsehay won the women's race in 35:10, one of WTC's fine runners, with Julia Stamps in second for NYAC. NYAC also had the top man too for the locals with John Henwood clocking in under the 30-minute mark, 29:29, just ahead of El Khatarbi 29:31 of WTC. A very classy race, and good to see John on the way back to fitness. My tip, Simon W. was too tired from his 1:13 25-k run last week where he passed 10k in a time well superior to what he ran yesterday.
Still in London - Just saw that Haile Gebrselassie ran 27:25 to win the 10k in Manchester, and The Simba ran to victory in the women's edition of the race in 31:28... kool.
Meanwhile the London trip is nice, running around Hyde Park doing the London park version of Central Park. I am staying in Knightsbridge in an apartment just around the corner from Harrods... hm, nice to see how the other half live! What a pad. London is very expensive, especially this area of town. Our office is on Cheyne Row in Chelsea at Stephan's father's house - wow, what a house! There is a stuffed Lion in the living roon, a skinned tiger on the floor(!!) Five floors and a garden..... the wine cellar is bigger than a manhattan apartment in itself! The father has houses in Venice, Ibiza, London, Paris, and New York... he has the patent for both the photo booth machines and the car roof hydralic bits, or whatever...I have been running now so much in Hyde Park I feel like I know the place, and it is definately a secondary park to NYC's. We saw a race there and it was sticks and stones compared to the NYRR's affairs. No chip mat, hand writing the entry forms, etc etc.....
BIg thanks to Urban who kindly gave us his morning, and also to Huw Lobb (14th in London this year). who is the first runner to beat a horse in the runner Vs horse race last year where he won $40,000. (hey to rent an apartment, unfurnished in Chelsea is 5,000-pounds a week on this street where we are based),,,,,,, Anyway back to Huw, he was great and gave an interview in the Park... Today we will meet Joyce Smith at her home, who won London twice and ran in the 1972 & 1984 Olympics for another interview, and the famous Hugh Jobes at his house as well.
The flight over was bad - I hate Virgin... we are on line for take off and other planes overtake us on the run way, 'Oh another daly' what pulling power... plus we fly at such an altitude we got turbulance like on a small jet up in East Icelandic stromy skies.....
I was sitting next to a woman who had lingered too long in the tax free perfumary, nevertheless we provided some entertainment, especially in her efforts to drink red wine whilst wearing white on the rough weather....
THe stewards on the plane got in a flap when I hit the call button three times (the trick to getting some attention) - hit it once you are ignored, wait five minutes, nothing, hit it twice, same thing. So I flashed the light three times and the medic s started running - apparently that is for emergencies only! All this finally got me a glass of water... it was that kind of flight - compared to British Airways Virgin is a dump, well worth the extra money to fly BA!
Arriving in England I was surprised how slow people move compared to the 'ritmo' of NYC. I mean we are on a moving esculator and people jam-stand to block your way moving at a yard a minute... I love the fast flow in NYC, makes getting places so much easier...
The underground/Subway though is nicer here, far more clean, comfortable and civilized. Beautiful stations too with curved low ceilings & wonderful old prints and posters (Tried to pry one from the wall but was unable).....

“Veronica Campbell, the Jamaican sprint sensation
who earned three medals – two of them gold – at the 2004 Olympic Games, will compete
at the Reebok Grand Prix on June 11, organizers announced today. Her gold medals
at 200m and the 4x100m relay plus the bronze at 100m made her not only the #1 female
sprinter in Athens, but also the winningest female track athlete overall.” We‘ll be there!
* Lornah and Hilda to NY
Both Lornah and her cousin Hilda Kibet will run in the Circle Of Friends New York Mini Marathon on the 11th of June. This 10 k Women's Race always has a very competitive field. Lornah won the race in 2003.
On the 4th of June both Lornah and Hilda will run in the Freihofer 5 K in Albany, NY. This will be Hilda's first race in the US. Lornah won last weekend the Britannic Asset Management Women's 10 K in Glasgow in 31:44 with Hilda finishing 2nd in 31:52. Next weekend the two will run in the Manchester 10 K in the UK.
Mind you an insider tip - don‘t expect blazing saddle results in Manchester, wait until NYC….
And from New York to Grand Cayman .... $199 check out US Airways.
Talking holidays I bumped (the operative word) into SaladGirl yesterday, at the Supermarket, and for once, in the fruits section. She kindly ended her cellphone call, speaking at volume level can hear you in the next aisle, and let me know that she needs to stress less, thus a trip to the Pocono’s is on the cards, “I have to go to one of those retreats… you know they sort through your luggage when you arrive.. Confiscate everything bar a toothbrush, couldn’t smuggle in anything last time…. Even the cell! And I eat so good when I‘m there, it‘s all brown rice.”So noticing the lack of urm, good things, in the basket I politely enquired if she was having a final binge.. Well that did not go down too well I can tell you, from the shape of her eyebrows curling at me. Then, pointing out the lack of substance I had in my own basket, “I see your health kick didn’t get past January?” In referral to my every year resolution to eat more vegetables…. Touché.
First we had Joan of Arc, then we have Kelly White. Thanks to Jeff W for the forward.
From the mailbag,
Kathy Martin, the uber masters runner, voted the overall best master performer by Powerbar asks, “Is Ian handling the announcing and awards? He is the ultimate in announcing-he knows everyone!” About the Voice of the NYRR…. Who we say is the #1 in announcing.
Hicham El Guerrouj is added to the Prefontaine Classic Two miler making the event, a classic. Markos Geneti, Mulugeta Wendimu, Mark Carrol and Alan Webb should be the top chasers. June 04 (NBC, Sunday, June 5, 2005
2:00–3:00 p.m. EDT/11:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. PDT)
Patti Catalano Dillon Running for Team Mizuno!
Another part of town, I am really liking Nolita as an area of New York… I was in Café Habana again, and the good part of this is that if you are a morning person the seating issue is alleviated - nobody rises particularly early in this corner of Manhattan.
Patrick Ivuti, another possible winner of the Kidney 10k - this guy is a demon on the roads and will be a great marathoner too should he choose… runs with no effort, seemingly.
Kurt Le Vert tells you to check your TV’s on Sunday, “Lagat running the 1500 at Cali.”
Nice material for the Kidney 10k T-shirts, very hi-tech! No Cotton…. Speaking of which we saw Cotton Lloyd in the park yesterday with his cool Red Hook Cotton T-shirt… he’s off to California next week..
05/19
Prague, Czech Republic - The man who was third at Lisbon, 59:27, Wilson Kiprotich Kebenei’s debut will happen this weekend. Another Kenyan, Salina Jebet Kosgei, leads the women’s field - she won Paris a couple of years ago.
Kwasi’s report of the night at the track…
“Well, i did not win. came out blasting did a first
round in 57sec and was clear ahead, but burned out in
round two (okay you told me so), but the thing is I
had a serious wardrobe malfunctioning, which lead me
to be preoccupied with keeping myself decent. It is
kind of hard not to let that kind of thing throw you
off, no? I can laugh at it now, but it seem kind of
stupid to pay $10 to run around naked uptown.“that is what I get for using equipment I have not used for years without testing it first. At least I can look forward to the 400m in two weeks knowing that I will run in new gear.” Well for once we can say, Glad we weren‘t there!
Cheers To LA - once a Spanish stronghold ‘Councilman Antonio Villaraigosa trounced Mayor James Hahn to become the city's first Hispanic mayor in more than a century as voters embraced the promise of change in a metropolis troubled by gridlock, gangs and failing schools.’
Over in Blighty - “Organisers of the Great Manchester Run are predicting an eventful race on Sunday, given the presence of the legendary Ethopian Haile Gebrselassie.” They hope the course record of 27 minutes 54 will fall… Simba’s in the women’s field. Gebrselassie ran 27mins 02secs in a road race in Doha in December 2002, setting the current world record… and we bet that won’t be touched. Baldini, the Olympic Champ, is also in the field.
Down on the track - great night, pur-fect weather…. Peter2, first down there & had a brief trhought about sneaking off… ran a really good session plus we had an interesting natter about Dubai, Ali the Juiceman, The Commander with his new asics “I want FIVE pairs” capitalist! Robin from the Harriers, Jose with the shoelace issues, Eileen take boot camp to a horizontal level, DavidG, Sir Alec “mis directed at Queens, just after my fastest mile I ws part of a pack that ran a bit further than we had to”Lissy who did some tremendous reeling in, Mia who dances the strides we note, Rick “Haven’t ran so fast since I was 13,” Luiz, Chuckychina, DavidP, RandySax going on a coffee course this weekend, Kwasi-clothed, Anil, AmexChris, Michelle getting back to her zippy self, Queen of the Harriers running tough, Cristina - great jump over a soccer ball, Vanessa (safe trip to Brasil) and a great session! and Jonathan hanging in like a trooper. Excuse of the night? Hotrod Evelyn‘s, “Due to locking myself out of my apartment tonight, I didn't make it down to the track.”
We’re on the road again this weekend - This time over the Pond to England! So Monday‘s update may, or may not be.. Depending on what the connections are like in London Town.

Off the e-zips, “Warn all the NYC Starbucks to have enough for 2 pumps Chai Latte Extra Hot and Non Fat Caramel Machiato Extra Hot!!!” Guess who is coming to town. Let’s change the calendar.
The first professional men’s 10K race in Central Park since 1997... Will Paul Koech’s 28:10 be broken?? See the line up below. But back to Paul… he was in the training group I used to run with back in 1995 and ‘96, and a few months ago I was chatting with him about that time, and the record in CP came in (which he did not know still stood as a record), he told me that he could have ran much faster on that day, and it was just a case of getting the win, “the record is not tough“ hm, we beg to differ, “I opened with two slow miles in the 4:40‘s“ and for a man who at the time ran the 10,000 on the track in 26:36 we believe that those mile splits, for him, were slow!Paul won the world half marathon champs when debuing at the 21.1k running 60-flat… I think he could have been a WR holder in the marathon if he‘d moved up in the nineties, instead of 2003 when he still ran a sublime 2:07:07... Apart from all this Paul is a true Gentleman of the Sport, one of the most humble athletes you‘ll ever meet.
Monsieur et Madame - “Adèle Flynn Bois was born this afternoon at 4.39. She's a healthy skinny girl (5 pounds 15 ounces and 20 inches tall), but we can't tell yet if she has the big calves of her father.” Congrats!

Spotted in Central Park, looking dapper as usual, The Voice Of the NYRR who is hosting the NYRR Tuesday night track series out on Icahn (first one last night) - we aim to be there soon with the NY Flyers in tow! Here’s a thought - how many would like to hear The Voice do the commentary on the NYC Marathon TV coverage? Meanwhile more Icahn talk….

Healthy Kidney 10K -
Meb Keflezighi, Hendrik Ramaala, Craig Mottram, Patrick Ivuti, Ryan Shay, Matt Downin, and John Mayock…. That’s the press - but we say Simon Wangai!Meanwhile Meb‘s quote, “The Healthy Kidney 10K race is for a good cause and it will help me determine my fitness level.” says he is either sandbagging or not entirely confident we think…
On the fly, like this one: There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness."
After Bernie the Chairman spotted Nicole Kidman the other day in Central Park jogging we thought we’d mention some other recent sightings to ‘watch’ out for… Owen Wilson running, Hilary Swank ditto, and of course Renee Z… we appear to have lost Madonna, and Howard Stern sightings have dropped off… talking of which Julia Stiles too - whatever happened to her? And Nicole if you need a running coach please give me a bell!….
Deena Kastor is out of the Seasonings Bolder Boulder 10-K due to an injury. "She has a stress reaction in her left foot," says ace manager Ray Flynn, a super fast 3:49-miler himself.

Dame Kelly Holmes tells the BBC that she intends to run at this summer's World Championships for the Brit-team. Holmes, 35, announced last month that she definitely would not compete beyond the 2006 Commonwealth Games.
"I just want to really enjoy this year but I'll be training very hard to hold my own on the track," she added.

Bay 2 Breakers - Gilbert Okari, 26, finished the 7.46-mile course with a winning time of 34 minutes and 49 seconds, Reuben Cheruiyot, 34:56, and
Thomas Kiplitan, 35 minutes and 10 seconds. I had to laugh when I saw that Thomas is reported at 21-years of age… he was running as a senior in 1995! Asmae Leghzaoui of Morocco won in 38 minutes and 22 seconds. Masako Chiba, 28, of Japan, came in at 39 minutes and 58 seconds.
And Sylvia ’Fat Tues’ Mosqueda, followed Leghzaoui and Chiba in 40 minutes and 15 secs.

Shoe4Africa photos are updated. On that note I had a nice busy weekend - first stop was Dean & Deluca to visit my cheeseman. I always get good deals because I pick the cheeses that nobody else goes for, this time a ripe Blue Shropshire. This in turn gave me weird dreams, but was ready for Saturday’s trip - It was also my first ever visit to New Paltz, a running hot spot out here - Where Zoomalong & The Rube have a house, and where Phil Wharton from the stretching ISO is based. Well in fact when we arrived at the parking lot I actually remembered I had ran there before, a long time ago with CPTC - it is an awesome place to run, and makes the Rockefeller Estates seem like a kept garden. I ran with my running buddy Falusi and the time flew by running in such an amazing place.. We got a little lost but… On the way back we stopped off to discover the town of NP, and the starbucks there. It is how I imagine the village of Woodstock to be like, tie-dye and incense with a mid America look to the inhabitants, and many students dotted enough to make an out of place feel to an in-place college town. I would like to be there running more often on those amazing trails. I also met up with an interesting chap called Karl who is doing lots of philanthropic stuff in East Africa right now - he has just returned from visiting Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, and Kenya in a whirlwind two week trip.
In the light of Linford Christie, Dwain Chambers… this was not needed by the British Sprint Force - “Sprinter Mark Lewis-Francis, who won Olympic relay gold last year, has been given a public warning by UK Athletics after testing positive for cannabis.
He has also been stripped of the silver medal he won in the 60m at this year's Spar European Indoor Championships.
Lewis-Francis, 22, avoided a two-year ban after claiming he ingested the drug passively rather than deliberately.
"My only explanation is that I may have been in the presence of people who were smoking cannabis," said Lewis-Francis.However I am not sure how plausible it is to suggest he was breathing in second hand smoke to the amount to be tested positive as I have no idea about the limits, but is sounds pretty iffy to me!
One thing is for sure, cannabis is not a performance enhancer for the 100m!

Here’s another of picture from the history books - it was my first serious attempt at running a marathon. The location Rome. It was a stinking hot day and I was getting sun burnt standing on the starting line. I was to later find out the only on course fluids available was pellegrino! Try drinking fizzy water whilst running! The race was packed with stars as Rome was trying for the Olympic 2004 bid - Many runners were just going for the 3k, 10k, 21k race primes, like world steeplechase champion Christopher Kosgei. This picture was on the front page of the major newspaper in Rome was we passed the famous Fontana di Trevi (think Anita Ekberg) and I was in third place with dreams of podium places… hm, those thoughts faded about 25km into the race when an Ethiopian Army powered by.

AUSTRALIAN Olympic athletes have been given a $52 million funding package to make the Beijing Games, an $11m European training base and a new boss of the Australian Institute of Sport. Okay, so here’s what you do, you go to the airport, you fly to this weekend’s meet in Kenya. You watch the race. You let the winners go by (As they are probably from the Middle East), then you pluck up the stragglers. You give them passports, and hey presto - you get your medals.

Marathon Class went well last night, and what weather we had - sitting on the reservoir with the cool sun was wonderful. Chubby won’t be running Queens this weekend as there is a clinic at the store - Adam is running though, and OzPaul (whose wife Toni is with us on the class) will be running. Anil was at the store, and I was wondering where Costanza was - have not seen him in an age, “He’s… well he’s himself.” Glad to hear it!

Reebok International Ltd. announced Monday it is the title sponsor of the Reebok Grand Prix, a track and field meet featuring global athletes that will be staged at the Icahn Stadium on Randall's Island, New York, on June 11. The same day as the Mini, and a good money race in Newport too. A crowded day.
At café Habana today, Mr Pajamas telling us to move away from the door turned out to be a customer, lime green is the “in” color this week, the waitress’s are awfully slow, but nice, the service when it arrives is not bad, but the arriving is the bad bit, and the coffee reminded me of chicory nuts drizzled through a strained tea bag.. No Celebrities this time, just fashion lords and gypsy nuts. On that note the other night at Starbucks with George I sampled a new Starbucks drink that tasted like coffee on a ice cream float.
Tattoed Terry is having a photo show - The gallery is Baboo on W. 20th St. between 5th and 6th avenues, closer to 6th. And the bird on the street says he has clipped his hair to look like a Page Boy.
Great article on RW from Peter G about John Henwood yesterday, On living in NYC, “I'm really enjoying it. It's really high energy. I live right next to Central Park. I love the weekends in the park. It's really pretty and, of course, the summer, I'm really looking forward to that. I'm certainly busy.”
The Queens points race is going to have a corral for Sub 6-min men, and sub 6:30 women to allow them to get a preferred start - if you hit these times then ask your team captains for further advise on what to do to get a sticker to get ‘in’ the starting pen.

Here’s a shot from the training camp days - In the training group was Benfares Samir, who was a good 1500m runner and did well in the 5th Ave mile a couple of years when they had an international field, Benoit Zwierzchewski - who ran 2:06:36 in Paris ‘03, Zak Haki who won Cal Int’l and Columbus Marathons a few times. The famous Khalid Skah, Olympic 10,000m gold. Nellie a top Swiss Marathoner, then Annette Sergent the world XC Champion two times, and Rachid El Bashir, the Olympic bronze 1500m medalist from ‘92 - it was cake day, as was everyday.
Track night - Cristina, Jose whose Bilbao team had just been knocked out of the Spanish Cup or something, “I was ready to go to the finals had they won”, Vanessa who informs us that to find a squirrel in Brasil one must go to a zoo, AmexChris, John, Alec, Anne - welcome back “Great jump over a soccer ball in mid stride”, Chuckychina. Ali the Juiceman with a hopping leg, Luiz, Lissy, Michelle who gets the commitment award for the night after leaving the Yankees game early to attend, “I ate a hotdog I hope my stomach is…” and it was!, Cristine, Anil in Orange, Queen Diane, Kevin, DavidG, Rick, Mia, Eve - her second boot camp in as many days, Colleen, HotRod Evelyn, Kim discovering bathrooms aren‘t so common downtown, and Kwasi. Even OzPaul made an appearance… late.

Congrats to Max who has been made General Secretary of the TZ federation!
Anyway, the Gutter Press of Anglaterre has taken a Tulu quote and turned it, British style, into a “warning” for Paula.. Yeah right, Tulu mentions…
Maria Mutola of Mozambique, we think the greatest women's 800m runner in history, returns to the Prefontaine Classic - IAAF Grand Prix - on 4 June shooting for a 13-year win streak!! What a legend!
Other track news as the month of May starts the season rolling - Kim Gevaert (who won the European Indoor 60m title) beat the 25-year-old Belgian 400m record on Sunday (8 May) in Ghent, Belgium, she ran the 400m in 51.45 seconds, which is the best by a European so far this year.
Anyway something more local - this weekend it is time to get out to the Queens Half Marathon - a points race for the clubs. A two loop relatively flat course where quite a few runners have recorded their PR’s. Starts on Poppenhusen Avenue too - seems like any race that starts there will be a cracker.
PATCHOGUE, Long Island Two people with a rifle following a high school track team to a meet have been arrested for threatening to shoot one of the track team members…. Not a good start to the meet.. Talking High School congrats to my HS athlete Kate who ran a meet last Friday and PR’d in the 1500, and then proceeded to take a minute(!!) from her 3k PR an hour later!
Paris holds a slim lead over London in the race to stage the 2012
Olympic Games, according to independent Olympic analysts on Tuesday.

The Court of Arbitration for Sports is expected to rule on the question of the USA 4 x 400-meter team that won the gold medal in Sydney. We really hope the other three athletes do not lose their Gold because of Jerome Young, that would be grossly unfair - also what is the odds America would have not won the Gold with ANY other 400m runner in the squad - like a zillion to one??
Fastest time ran by an athlete never to win a marathon - For men, Titus Munji (KEN) with a 2:06:15 PR (two starts, best finish 3rd); for women, Deena Drossin (USA) with a 2:21:15.4 PR (six starts, best finish 2nd).

At last a photo not to do with Scotland! Instead let's jump a continent, and head South, past the equator. Here’s a Tanzania track race, the girl in red is the winner, eventually, and after a few more laps so they tell me….

Laughing the other day when I received this e-meesage, “oh my god! It’s like a freaking sushi menu over here. Octopus, octopus ice, octopus heat, octopus stretching, octopus with spicy massage oil, cool mentholated octopus,
octopus with Epsom salt bath, AM octopus with oatmeal, octopus law'n'order,
octopus late night with letterman.” I was trying to persuade an injured friend of mine to keep on using the wooden Octopus massage tool useful for muscle injuries, and available from the body shop for under $5... Ha ha, loved it.

I have to thank Peter Langerhorst, the husband of Lornah Kiplagat, who advised me to run slower in my training. He has proved to be right with saying so.” - Way to go Starbucks!
Kenyan distance runner Nicholas Kemboi, 26:31 10,000m, has joined several compatriots by becoming a Qatar citizen and will be eligible to compete for the Gulf state at the Helsinki world championships in August. The last of the Scots.. Into the mist. Well photowise any road. The memories are gone too... although the weather in NYC right now feels somewaht Scottish with a wee nip to the air!
A Scottish lass, who I think won the race. Looking like a determined coal miner. Tough nut ran 36 for the course too!The prices is Scotland are not as bad as London either, though my comrades tell me that Dublin is even more expensive these days. Which reminds me one of these days I must get over to visit the Berk who must be a master this November - I am trying to persuade him to make a come back to competition, but apparently he likes gardening too much - his last 5-miles was a very low 23, and that is pretty speedy for a 39-yr old… hm, probably worth over 100% on the age grading…
Anyway, a while back I was talking about how annoying it is to go with someone when they taek a cellphone to the table, even the noise... like in a church when the ringtones go off.. (Ed's note - what would you know about churches?)
Going back to the cafes and the cellphones -
Mind you, (see below picture)the seats (extremely comfortable we may add, and transportable too no less)are somewhat off the norm up in the outdoor cafes in some parts of the world too! They would make for a great marathon post race café though, y'know when you sit down and can not get back up again.
The plants on the tables can be purchased, or chewed, along with the bakery goods. I did not pluck any leaves off and eat them, y‘know just in case!
On the Wickers....
Knicks president Isiah Thomas still hopes to lure Phil Jackson back to New York, but he is interviewing other coaching candidates.
Thomas has talked to former Golden State coach and current Spurs' assistant P.J. Carlesimo, as well as Flip Saunders -- fired by Minnesota in February. He also plans to contact other coaches still involved in the playoffs, all as fallbacks to Jackson.

Forwarded from the Tahari Ferrai, “Andy Rooney's tips for telemarketers
Three Little Words That Work !!
(1)The three little words are: "Hold On, Please..." Saying this, while putting down your phone and walking off (instead of hanging-up immediately) would make each telemarketing call so much more time-consuming that boiler room sales would grind to a halt. Then when you eventually hear the phone company's "beep-beep-beep" tone, you know it's time to go back and hang up your handset, which has efficiently completed its task. These three little words will help eliminate telephone soliciting.
(2) Do you ever get those annoying phone calls with no one on the other end?
This is a telemarketing technique where a machine makes phone calls and records the time of day when a person answers the phone.
This technique is used to determine the best time of day for a "real" sales person to call back and get someone at home.
What you can do after answering, if you notice there is no one there, is to immediately start hitting your # button on the phone, 6 or 7 times, as quickly as possible. This confuses the machine that dialed the call and it kicks your number out of their system. Gosh, what a shame not to have your name in their system any longer !!!
(3) Junk Mail Help:
When you get "ads" enclosed with your phone or utility bill, return these "ads" with your payment. Let the sending companies throw their own junk mail away. When you get those "pre-approved" letters in the mail for everything from credit cards to 2nd mortgages and similar type junk, do not throw away the return envelope.
Most of these come with postage-paid return envelopes, right? It costs them more than the regular 37 cents postage "IF" and when they receive them back.
It costs them nothing if you throw them away! The postage was around 50 cents before! the last increase and it is according to the weight. In that case, why not get rid of some of your other junk mail and put it in these cool little, postage-paid return envelopes.
One of Andy Rooney's (60 minutes) ideas.
Send an ad for your local chimney cleaner to American Express. Send a pizza coupon to Citibank. If you didn't get anything else that day, then just send them their blank application back!
If you want to remain anonymous, just make sure your name isn't on anything you send them. You can even send the envelope back empty if you want to just to keep them guessing! It still costs them 37 cents. The banks and credit card companies are currently getting a lot of their own junk back in the mail, but folks, we need to OVERWHELM them. Let's let them know what it's like to get lots of junk mail, and best of all they're paying for it...Twice!
Let's help keep our postal service busy since they are saying that e-mail is cutting into their business profits, and that's why they need to increase postage costs again. You get the idea !
If enough people follow these tips, it will work---- I have been doing this for years, and I get very little junk mail anymore.

At home, my parents have a house only twenty minutes from Balmoral Castle, so it was a welcome pleasure to be able to catch up with them too. I ate like a pig (I’m poking through the window waiting for the baker to deliver the buns) and luckily my mother had prepared by extra baking.. So I was very happy to see the scales did not reflect the journey when I returned back to Manhattan! Well a little, but… I‘m chiseling…

On Saturday I went to a talk given by Trisha Meili at the Delizia Restaurant. Trisha is better known perhaps as the ‘central park jogger’ and she gave a most informative talk over lunch. She is the Chairman of the Board for the Achilles Track Club too, a great club in NYC. You can meet Trisha at the upcoming Hope & Possibility five-miler next month in Central Park, scroll down for details and a link.It was nice to be again in a restaurant where for the first two and a half hours there was not one single cellphone to be heard!
That night at the Fiorello’s restaurant opposite the Lincoln Center - Margherita pizza as a starter (with the thinnest of crusts you have ever seen, talking blue rizla papers ), Filet of Sole (with capers as the vegetable!), and strawberry cheesecake drizzled in chocolate sauce from a copper pot for the dessert - Yum, and it was a huge slice too! In that restaurant they have reserved seating for regulars, like Pavarotti has his booth complete with a brass nameplate, we tried to get a photo but did not manage…. The food was good though….
Talking restaurants the sommelier at a very well known posh restaurant is a good runner, he is a member of the Buena Vista Gym and word has it he was running “Very fast” the other day… next time I am there I’ll have to ask him for some wine recommendations, although I am not actually lacking in a list of my own taste.

Thanks to Tahari Ferrari for the forward, "FIRST FOUR-MINUTE MILE:
May 6, 1954
In Oxford, England, 25-year-old medical student Roger Bannister cracks track and field's most notorious barrier: the four-minute mile. Bannister, who was running for the Amateur Athletic Association against his alma mater, Oxford University, won the mile race with a time of 3 minutes and 59.4 seconds.
For years, so many athletes had tried and failed to run a mile in less than four minutes that people made it out to be a physical impossibility. The world record for a mile was 4 minutes and 1.3 seconds, set by Gunder Hýgg of Sweden in 1945. Despite, or perhaps because of, the psychological mystique surrounding the four-minute barrier, several runners in the early 1950s dedicated themselves to being the first to cross into the three-minute zone.
Roger Bannister, born in Harrow, England, in 1929, was a top mile-runner while a student at the University of Oxford and at St. Mary's Hospital Medical School in London. In 1951 and 1953, he won British championships in the mile run. As he prepared himself for his first competitive race of the 1954 season, Bannister researched the mechanics of running and trained using new scientific methods he developed. On May 6, 1954, he came to the Iffley Road track in Oxford for the annual match between the Amateur Athletic Association and Oxford University. Conditions were far from ideal; it had been windy and raining. A considerable crosswind was blowing across the track as the mile race was set to begin.
At 6 p.m., the starting gun was fired. In a carefully planned race, Bannister was aided by Chris Brasher, a former Cambridge runner who acted as a pacemaker. For the first half-mile, Brasher led the field, with Bannister close behind, and then another runner took up the lead and reached the three-quarter-mile mark in 3 minutes 0.4 seconds, with Bannister at 3 minutes 0.7 seconds. Bannister took the lead with about 350 yards to go and passed an unofficial timekeeper at the 1,500-meter mark in 3 minutes 43 seconds, thus equaling the world's record for that distance. Thereafter, Bannister threw in all his reserves and broke the tape in 3 minutes 59.4 seconds. As soon as the first part of his score was announced--"three minutes..."--the crowd erupted in pandemonium.
Bannister went on to win British and Empire championships in the mile run, and the European title in the 1,500-meter event in 1954. At the end of the year, Bannister retired from athletic competition to pursue his medical career full time and in 1955 recounted his experiences in the book The Four Minute Mile. He later earned a medical degree from Oxford and became a neurologist. In 1975, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.
His world record in the mile did not stand long, and the record continued to be lowered with increasingly controlled climatic and surface conditions, more accurate timing devices, and improvements in training and running techniques. A "sub-four" is still a notable time, but top international runners now routinely accomplish the feat. Because a mile is not a metric measurement, it is not a regular track event nor featured in the Olympics. It continues, however, to be run by many top runners as a glamour event.
South Africa's former Olympic 800 metres silver medallist Hezekiel Sepeng has tested positive for the banned steroid norandrosterone.
Congrats to Cara on the Urban Athletics Official Store page! Great job!
Speaking of which last night was our kick off for what must be called the University course of marathon running! This program takes extensive out of the dictionary and puts running knowledge on the edge of ultimate. The program is packed thus runners will really learn loads whilst doing the marathon course. We saw Moses this morning (on the program) running in the park, and running to the plan - "It's easy right?" - yep, but only since you were zipping along last night. It is not too late to sign up, call Cara or Jerry for more details - 212.828.1906We had a great night with focused athletes lining up to learn… the salt shaker was session #1.…. Saw Monsieur Mileage in the park, and just as I was doing a couple of hula hoop twirls Sylvia came by laughing, but hey this is Central Park - ALSO, if you can run the Central Park six mile loop for Soundwalk and listen to a running CD let me know, but it has to be in the next few days. Thx.
Support the Achilles Club, as it supports so many!

Jorge in CT tells, “The Bogota Colombia Half Marathon is
on July 31, 2005. More information on www.correcaminoscolombia.com” that would be a great race to do - I love Bogota, and think it to be a great holiday town too! Happy memories. Nice website too.
We hear from Urban, “BTW Spanish marathon squad got named: Reyes, Rios, Chema Martinez, Kamel Ziani. Isabel Eizmendi only woman.” And the Americans going to Helsinki? Glad to see Trent B’s name there after the US trials last year.
A sign of the times - reading the shoe guide in NY Runner and - no racing shoes, more trails shoes than even the lightweight shoes - and unbelievably 11-oz is now considered lightweight??
Photo‘s continued -
For myself I never really got going in the race, and the hassle of the kilt restricting my strides made me wish I‘d worn the red version I got from TGV last month, a sports version. Y’know the kind of race where the gun goes off and you don’t? Well that was it. Actually I am not a royalist at all, no real interest in the royals, but before the race I was jogging behind the castle on some little dirt trails.
The paths were yards from the Castle’s back door and I could not help but remember reading an article how when Princess Diana came here she felt ostracized and left out, so she would take walks, and I had a spooky feeling that it was here she used to wander… who knows.
The Tartan 10k concept is looking to go to a four city grand prix - watch out New Zealand! The locals really got behind the event, and there are some magnificent castles/stately home type places around where one can stay before/after the race.
The running up there is perfect, with wooded paths reminiscent of Sweden. Next year the race organizers are thinking of putting together tours which would be a blast starting with the race. A whisky tour, golf, and a good post race party would be nice. There is also a tartan uniform (shorts/singlet) in the making too for those not kilt-inclined.
Although this was a somewhat rustic version many cafes in Scotland insist that Mobiles are turned off before entering a café or a restaurant, a nice touch that one misses when living in New York where the obligatory table layout is a knife, a fork, and a cellphone at each seat.

Dereje Kebede who won the Scottish Race did so in 32:25-minutes (Our reporter struggled to 6th). Kebede was very interested to hear how the Track races were going back in his homeland -
Ethiopian Track Champs -
Men's 10,000m
1. Gebregziabher Gebremariam (Ethiopian Banks) 28:38.94
2. Abebe Dinkessa (Prisons Police) 28:39.07
3. Assefa Mezgebu (Ethiopian Banks) 28:56.54
Women's 1500m
1. Gelete Burika (Prisons Police) 4:10.10
The man who was third was also in the national team the year that Kebede first made the squad, he said, “The first National Team I made I was with Tesfaye Tola (Olympic Bronze), Jifar (NYC winner & CR holder), Mezgebu (WC Silver 10,000), and Haile Gebrselassie…” And a lot of his success came from the ‘belief’ - simply knowing he was good enough to run with these guys made him think he was a 27-min man when he stepped out of Ethiopia
Wow, imagine, you must know you have made it when those guys are your team mates - and in fact that squad did win WC Gold in the Half Marathon Champs in Bristol. Dejere ran 61:59 earlier this year he said in Kenya.
More Scots News -
Juan Carlos de la Ossa (Euro Silver XC) and Jose Manuel Martinez (European 10,000 champion) will run in Sunday's BUPA Great Caledonian Run in Edinburgh.
The 19-year-old Ugandan Boniface Kiprop, who was fourth in the Olympic 10,000m final, is a fav and Ireland's Mark Carroll and French marathon specialist Driss El Himer are also in the class field.
I hope to get more actual running pictures to show from the Scotland Race, hopefully I can get some (I was going to run with a camera as it was a beautiful setting) But here’s the cuts - here Amanda, Dereje and I are before the start. Dereje is hoping to run a fast time, “I want under 29-minutes to get in the Manchester 10k,” he was mentioning, that really made everyone else decide that this would be a one man race. Two days after this he won the Barry Jones 10k in Wimbledon in 30:28 course record in London.
More coming tomorrow we hope, of Scotland anyway!
Beach to Beacon 10K (a.k.a. "Joanie's race") in Cape Elizabeth ME has less than 700 spots left in the 5000-runner field. This is a great race not to be missed if you are ‘up’ there.
12:55.76 in the 5000 - what can Craig Mottram run in the Healthy Kidney 10k in Central Park?? Find out soon on May 22nd! Also runnin’ -

We read, “Amy Rudolph has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after she ran a world-leading time during her debut performance in the women's 10,000m Sunday at the Cardinal Invitational in Palo Alto, California.
A two-time U.S. Olympian, Rudolph ran 31 minutes, 18.96 seconds to win, which also makes her the second-fastest American woman of all-time behind American record holder Deena Kastor (30:50.32).” Amazing debut!
I saw the RAY film… great acting by Jaimee Fox (spck?) but the rest of the stuff, sans the music was pretty slim, topped off with the that great ‘for the next 20-years’ when they realized the film was running too long ending…. Saw Ocean’s 12 too, weak, weak….

Scots trip
Arriving in Scotland it was straight to Starbucks, non of the Shishah tea houses, but the American staple. In fact after I arrived at the airport we had to wait for Dej (forgothowtospell) the Ethiopian. The journey was 26-hours door to door… wow. A lot slower than the food delivery one gets on BA Scottish flights when lunch arrived thrown through the air (in a sealed package/lunch box). At the passport control the lady said, “Toby, that’s a strange name isn’t it?” I was not sure what to answer to that, perhaps to say that a name change to Dakota and the growing of sideburns is imminent.
Well one thing was it was nice to sneeze and not hear ‘Bless you’ - not being religious it always feels odd to hear that…. Oh, I forgot to mention Poppa John who kept on walking up and down the aisle with his belly brushing briskly upon all and sundry….Traveling to the race: I stayed with Quentin & Amanda, the race hosts, the night before the race, and the Ethiopian guy who is very nice.. We drove very early in the morning to Balmoral Castle as I had to do a TV show for the BBC. Bang went my hope of actually getting a sleep in after my travels (didn’t sleep the previous night).. But now, anyway we were whizzing round these bendy Scottish highland roads where the Scots fought off the English when the Ethiopian guy regurgitated his breakfast, all over my luggage… Hmm, what a start!
Arriving at the castle six hours before the race start we met the film crew and I went off to do the filming.. Too bad for me that the film director wanted the shooting to be done out of the Sun, and it was flippin cold in the gray shade! Well I did get the chance to nip in the castle which caused considerable edgy looks from about five caretaker ladies who watched me like a hawk would a pending meal creature.. I kept on looking for the Royals but spotted none!
The actual race was a success for the organizers - 6,000 people at the event, 1,600-runners, eight ferrets (I kid you not), and no rain! A beautiful course - though rather odd seeing army men in the bushes (as this was the royal residence)…. Desperate attempts to get he Ethiopian in a kilt failed at the last minute, yet he won the race (But in a slower time than my “WR”) wearing just tartan shorts and a singlet. I met up with parents at the race, and drove back with them… away from getting cups of coffee with milk automatically added. Luckily my parents had good coffee and cupboards of Yogi teabags! Almost a temple of herbal tea…. I forgot to mention every time I heard the race announcer talking he was moaning that my kilt was not “regulation weight” for a kilt, and I met the Scottish man who ran in a ’proper’ kilt.. So I asked him, “Do you want to swop because my kilt goes below the knees and it is damn hard to run with floppy material chopping your stride…” He did not want to - I mean all of us train in track suits, what was the deal?
The next day - Seals & Sin-ema… in the morning we went to the coast and saw loads of seals. I suggest a home movie for green peace - do you remember when they clubbed a seal to death in a propaganda film? Anyway it started to pour so we went to see (not Sea) Sahara at the movie house instead - not a bad fun film, like a James Bond with cavalier humor. Coming home I helped my parents take down a tree in their garden (I once went on a course to be a Tree Surgeon), with deadly slivers of bark flying I felled the thing.
The next day we went to visit a castle build in 1596, there was nice paintings on the ceilings of the room, so I decided to sneak a photo (cameras are banned from the inside of these old residential castles). I made my mother guard the door whilst I whipped out the camera.. I thought I turned off the flash, but no - a huge zizz went round the room and down the spiral staircase, but luckily nobody complained… then my Mother started taking pictures too as she spied a painting on the roof of a guy playing a lute and thought it too good to miss.
These castles are rather amazing - usually what happened is that the owners could not afford the upkeep so they ‘donate the castle’ to the national trust.
Then it was the Hitchhikers’ Guide to Coffee… we found this café that was started by a hitchhiker who went round Britain, suddenly got bored on the road, stopped and built a café in the nearby field - he had rickshaws to sit in (photos to come).. The muffins where not too good though… Moments after we went to a Mohair shop and the shop keeper was excited because Prince Charles & Camilla had just been in “Oh Charles was touching everything” “Camilla was in that red coat”
Then we went to the Scottish Hotel, Restaurant, and Manager award winning place for Coffee and cakes where they played dire repetitive jigs and clicked their fingers whilst saying “aiy” to everything that was asked, yet not producing the desired cakes…
yep that was a flavor of the holiday…
Flying back I nearly missed the flight - I was early but then was daydreaming around the duty free when I heard my name, “Last call for the BA flight! Mr. Tanser we are waiting for you and will take..” Off I sprinted - ‘Minn Hinsti resa’ as they could say Up North. The girl sitting next to me was excited because a few seats up in the plane sat the Archer from the Lord of the Rings, hm, I was not so impressed and was more interested in eating my Lebkuchen cookies brought onboard so I would not have to eat the flying food! I opened the inflight magazine and got a laugh from “Monaco on a Budget” - yeah right! Kind’ve like the Masa restaurant review (“That $500 meal is so-o-o worth it“) next to the envelope in the mag asking for your unused foreign coins to help unicef.. “Pennies make a difference.” How the world flips huh? Anyway enough of that--
04/29
Off to Scotland on Thursday… On Friday afternoon, being featured on the Scottish BBC kids’ television - Can’t wait, “now Kiddies, remember to eat your corn flakes….”
Friday night it is in the pub…. Saturday Jet lag + the race, hopefully not a hangover to boot…. Anyway the Kids
interview is going to take place in Balmoral Castle.
A natty residence! I wonder if they serve bagels? I’ll settle for marmalade sandwiches. (Next update will probably be Wednesday of next week--)
Faster running is at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia over this weekend, including a zippy CPTC men’s veteran team in the 400m with the 56-year old Alston who is running 52’s!
That picture of Boston Billy yesterday, flip a $20 bill, look like President Jackson?
Lifer - Norway’s Helge Hafsås has 66-career marathon victories! Our fav Hugh Jones has 23 including more impressive wins, Boston Bill 22 ditto.… Women’s side: Leslie Watson of Scotland has 68, but unlike Helge, she is not active, thus her record could be passed…
Good news - New Road Racing Show To Debut On OLN: The series is being produced by Salmini Films on air this Saturday - I only hope they have different commentators than at Boston, Carol Lewis may be a gem reporter for many things, but not for LD Running.
The local club championships this year is looking good - In the men’s A div WS are holding court - Here. And in the B div Urban men, in their first year attacking, are in Second. And the women’s, only one division is by far the closest race of the year.
Today’s conundrum - “The Nike Free mimics barefoot running, which has been shown to have drastic improvements in performance and resistance to injury.” So what about all the other free-less shoes Nike are selling? They must drastically hinder my running right? I want a refund - I ran in nike shoes for ten years before going Japanese. My biggest observation - Nikes felt like a mattress under my foot, the Japanese shoes (mizuno) actually felt like my feet had a ride and I could feel the roads.. At first I did not like the sensation, now I love it, and can’t go back. So I guess I‘m not free.
"It has been a period of 25 years that I would not have missed for anything in the world," Meyer said. "Now I must continue with the rest of my life - and I am looking forward to that."
Antonio De Vido becomes my hero of the week, not in least for the nice things he said about the website, but for the Shoe drive he will be holding in May with aims of the “around 100” number… even a few helps, so thank you Antonio!
Huge Congrats to The Rube! Third overall at the Big Sur marathon, at the age of 48! I see bright lights ahead, a bobby dazzler!
From Kenya - Kenyan members of parliament unanimously pass a motion calling for convicted rapists to be castrated. Way to go, that’ll work! A step forward me thinks.
Bernard Lagat - a huge boon for American running I think, and a great guy. Humble, nice, pleasant & an inspiration for the next generation. The guy has proved he’s in the States for all the right reasons, and I think his explanation for the Olympics thingy is totally plausible - tell me the name of an athlete who’d like to miss that event deserving to be there. I think if the IOC did recall the medal it would be a travesty, and a universal bad decision - sport is sport, not a political chessboard. Mind you if I had my way I would have had Evans Rutto, Timothy Cherigat, and Felix Limo in the marathon last year too…..Go Bernard!
04/28
Top Athletes Accused of Cheating in Olympics - a ridiculous story from the Kenya Press. I mean ‘just’ because Okayo dropped out in the marathon she is cheating?? People in such positions as the guy who said these things should not be given the position he has! Makes him look like an idiot. Also what has Barsosio to gain by going to the Olympics? Nothing, she could have earned more $$ coming to race on the roads here…. She is a legend already with previous Olympics behind her and a world champion in ‘97 to boot.. The guy sounds like a.. enough!
Something Good - HEALTHY KIDNEY 10K
Sunday, May 22, Central Park: 9:00 a.m.
We read from the NYRR, “You won't want to miss NYRR's only 10K in May. All entrants receive a technical shirt, finishers get a water bottle, and for each entrant the United Arab Emirates Embassy will make a $2 National Kidney Foundation donation. The event also promises to have a stellar men's field vying for $19,000 in open prize money, as well as many top male and female NYRR members competing for an $1,800 prize purse.” Wow, sounds like some fast running, worth checking out.
A week after the London Marathon finished, Jennie Page - though partially paralysed - crossed the finish line on The Mall.
Miss Page, 54, of St Albans, Herts, left partially paralysed after surgery to remove a tumour in her skull, had walked the 26.2 mile course.
She finished the final mile and a half with her 82-year-old mother Josie Page, on Saturday afternoon. She underwent life-saving surgery to remove a tumour from her head way back in 1997, but suffered complications that left her paralysed along the right side of her body.
Initially she could not even lift a finger, but intensive rehabilitation enabled her to ‘do London’. Amazing!!
Reading the great Scott Douglas Kenya stories, as spied on Jesse’s site, the line that sticks out as being the funniest is indeed the one Jesse pointed out, “If you see an SUV here, count on the driver being able to outrun you.” When you live in Manhattan you really understand the humor of that more than in any place. What a line, love it.
Further inside scoop of who are the SUV owners in Iten - Simba & Starbucks drive a basic land rover, no frills or luxury items - it is the old type land rover, and the best for the roads there… Chris Cheboiboch has now gone through 6 SUV’s of the more luxurious type, all have been crashed… the same, except a greater number by Christopher Kosgei. If you see a Toyota Land Cruiser passing through Iten to Kabarnet, that might be Paul Tergat…. He was one of the first to get one, now loadsa runners drive them… the only BMW, not an SUV, in Iten belongs to Selina Chirchir, and Brother Colm drives a normal 4-door saloon car.People who step out of SUV’s round here usually have problems making the arduous journey to the sidewalk from the road, and would gladly park on the sidewalk if allowed.
Oprah Winfrey, in People Magazine’s 50-best looking?? First if one thinks that Oprah sans her millions would be in the 50-list keep on tugging, secondly are we talking about ‘in the flesh’ or after the airbrush? I mean I can see Penelope Cruz and Julia Roberts getting in… Haile Berry right…
Down on the track - I was expecting a miniscule turnout considering that the rain was coming down like an avalanche, and bolts of lightning were flashing about with thunder clashes… actually when the evening started the weather got better - Kurt Le Vert with his kingsized umbrella -”My wife‘s expecting any moment, can you tell me if my phone rings when I’m doing the repeats..” Full marks Kurt! Kwasi, Kevin the Commander - again without Cindy…, Ali the Juiceman, Jose back from the marathon, Anil charging well, ChuckyChina, Eve - nice to see, Robin take two, David P - proven weather man, David G, Colleen full of smiles, Luiz, Shawn, Paul & John from Amex, Mia, Hotrod - starting a new job, Cristina but no Vanessa, Alicia, Peter 2 - powering along, Diane running well tonight, AmexLee, Alec on & off - must have had a lot on his mind, Jonathan, Tom, and AmexChris - back from Boston….
04/27

A belated happy birthday to Ed Altman, who was nice enough to share his special day by coming to Speedwork last night… shows commitment!
From Tony at Letherman’s Loop: “The mud was much worse than last year and eliminated any shot at the course record for Tommy. He won easily in about the same time as last year. Kerry Arsenault ran a 46:57 for her 5th win. Neither of them was challenged. We registered over 900 runners but about 150 of them chose to sleep in when they saw the rain. The no shows did not know that I had asked Danny to do a pre-race blessing. The exact instant that he climbed the ladder to recite a Navaho/Irish poem, bright sunshine broke through the clouds. The crowd roared it's approval. He later told me that in Kenya he was called the rainmaker because the people in his village believed he could do the opposite.
Apparently a young male ran the entire course barefoot and finished near the front.”

Tickets for a back-to-back marathon screening of all six Star Wars films sold out in five minutes on Monday in Britain.
Fans had queued all weekend to obtain one of the 1,000 'Galactic Passports' for the day-long event, to be held at London's Empire cinema on 16 May.
From Leslie, one of my new athletes, “I spent about 4 hours on your website this weekend. It is just amazing to hear and see all these amazing people!!! That’s a great website.” Kool, thx for the positive feedback.
Heard Speed of Sound by Coldplay yesterday, hm seems a watered down version of their earlier stuff… y’know the same mould, let’s not break it.
“I do not share the belief with those who think that this record is beyond reach. What another person has achieved can be achieved by another," Catherine Ndereba. Gotta love the attitude - what people don’t credit Catherine for is that she was a hot fav for the Olympics 2000 when she had far better form than in 2004, she won the Kenyan Trial at Boston 2000, and then idiotically left off the Kenyan team in a scandal move by the then KAA.
At the gym; I had just finished a run and was going to stretch. I noticed a magazine on the rack so I bent forward to grab it, and a second later another hand went for it…The magazine in question was ‘W’ - I used to read it at Kimka Mansions… the other hand belonged to a woman, and she says, “You don’t want that, it’s a woman’s magazine…” Like I am supposed to want to read about Golf Clubs? Damn good magazine, and just the ticket for my upcoming travel! So what did I say to the woman? “You drive a car right?” A nod, “Okay you get the Car Magazine.” Well that shut her up, or I presume so as I was gone.
Someone else gone, Donna ‘$400-million personal fortune’ Karan, says, “I live on my mat.” Meaning the Yoga one. She has just returned from a safari to Kenya where she had a little ‘life reality blast’. From DK to the Harriers DK - she’s having her bash following the Shelter Island 10k this year, so get in her good books for an invite… apparently the sleeping conditions are ‘pretty Woodstock’ out there - running the race is optional…Hm races we recommend coming up:
Revlon Run 5k this Saturday… Cinco De Mayo in Prospect Park next weekend (win trips to Puerto Rico if you run fast enough)…. Mid May Classic - a pancake 4-miler in Fairfield with a fab organization and food fest following the race….. Then of course the Ridgewood Races - 1-mile, 5-k, and 10-k in NJ at the close of the month…….
I am becoming a hippy, drinking herbal teas these days…. Of course we still have the coffee (my needed drug) but I have been drinking more tea of late… god knows why I hate the stuff… I have stopped drinking beer too, that was just because I ran out and could not be bothered to go to the store one night, then after a couple of nights I forgot about it, right up until now actually….. Chubby’s father, Joe Macari also cut it out, I wonder if he is keeping up - we deduced 2-lbs a week….. Talk about skinny - Alan Culpepper at 6’ and 130-lbs, wow, there’s something to chisel for.

I am still in shock after Paula’s run at London on the silver screen. The only word is brutal - she left carnage in her wake.. Shocking, a destroyer. The men’s race was more of a time trial without the WR splits, and the good part came at mile 24- when Lel simply sped up to a 4:38 mile and the rest of the world could not. He looks smooth as silk. But Paula, OHG, a world apart from the humanoids.
At the store - Costanza is off, he's in Boston, apparently going shopping up there and catching some baseball - he'll be spotable in his beret amongst the caps.... Chubby was in fine spirits, Anil was being his usual self, "I'm going to Broad St for the 10-miler" Who are you going with "I can't tell you who she is"... enough enough... Herb the Verb was telling us about the latest & greatest, if not the most recent, and then we were wondering whereabout Tesfaye Bekele is these days....
Well "ugly rims," as he calls them, or not - here is TGV’s new Mercedes. AS we say, the only person we know who gets a new car faster than anyone gets a new toothbrush. On that note I once knew a girl in Sweden, a girl friend of one of the training partners at Sparvagen who used to change toothbrushes very frequently… come to think about it she‘d give TGV a run for his money. I remember once we were on a training camp… no you had to be there, all about a bus, not paying the full fare, and a village called San Pedro. Those were the days living in the South of Spain pretending to be a hard working athletes… I used to go on a morning run and get chased by a mad donkey when I crossed ‘his‘ field. Anyone who wants a cheap running holiday could do worse than head for that region, the mountains Andalusia ones are fab for training in.
I have a new friend on the UES, quite unwanted. It is a huge dog exactly like the Turner & Hooch one, except this one looks like a gigantic puppy. Everytime I run on a certain street (albeit at a regular time) he is there on the end of a long leash with a French lady. And the dog always comes jumping in front of me so I can not get by. I tried to inform the owner this is not the ideal system for me to get down the street but she does not appear to understand and smiles and says things like “Yes, he’s ‘appy right?” I did try the obvious like switching sides of the street, and even going up a different street, but low and behold - about four times now in the last six days - I’m going to have to get one of those high pitch whistle things.. A flippin pain getting tangled up in Brutus’s leash each day, and he weighs about 300-lbs too!
Tergat… ‘running either in the Chicago or New York City marathons later in the year to prove his fitness.’ Let’s hope for the latter, although the course is not a tergat-friendly one it would be great to see him race here. And…London marathon champion Martin Lel hopes to run in either the Chicago or New York City races this year if he fails to win selection in the Kenyan team for the Helsinki world championships in August….
Lincoln Tunnel 5k - congrats to the winners Alexander Wright Stockholm,NJ 19 M 16:57 Kathleen Castles New Providence,NJ 33 F U 17:55.. The Captain ran this one year and told us that there is quite a hill getting out of the tunnel, so these are good times.
Mo Farah beat off the challenge of many of Britain’s top runners to win Sunday's "Sam's Run" in Bushey Park, Teddington. Winning time - 32minutes 24seconds. Mark Steinle, a marathon specialist, claimed second place in 32min 42sec with Steve Sharp third in 33min 53sec.
Rebecca Lyne took the women's title in a time of 37min 13sec in an event where 2,500 pounds was raised for the trust fund of Sam Haughian.
Haughian died in a road traffic accident in South Africa last April, where he was preparing at altitude to gain selection for the Olympic Games.
The aim of the trust fund is to help provide financial assistance to the future generation of up-and-coming British athletes… Urban was at the event and he spied Sonia O’S amongst others in the park…. “Jo Pavey, John "The Ox" Downes” - Urban fails to understand that John is called The Bull, not the Ox. And one can blame EPO-Berko for that.
Catherine Ndereba Says She Will Defend World Championship Title, "After my historic feat [fourth Boston win], I can only think about the World Championships.

The Rock 'n' Roll Marathon, scheduled for June 5, will be sponsored by Coca-Cola Zero, race organizers announced Thursday. Somehow I can't see coca-cola being a marathon sponsor, let's hope they do provide their sports drink substitute...

Rye Derby 5-miler next week, $500 first prize, 300, & 200, and team money at the Rye YMCA, Rye, NY - I remember that German guy who was here the other summer ran this as his first race, and it was one of those days when not one of the ‘expected’ runners turned up and he could not believe his luck easy scooping the 500
Then as fate would have it I just got this email from Conor!
“Seventeen years ago Eamonn Coughlin initiated a 5 mile race in his adopted home of Rye, NY. “Just 25 miles from Manhattan, Rye is easily accessible by Metro North train from Grand Central station and by car on the I-95.

Latest on Shoe4Africa - I am looking for women’s shoes smaller than a size-8 for a specific athlete, she “wants lots” so please save them up if you can, let me know how I can collect, and this athlete is looking for a July delivery date so no hurries. Thx
Shoe4Africa is going great, we have an exciting new venture hopefully in the pipelines with ML-productions… We have over 200-shoes in the seas right now, and the people that help (the you’s) are just fab! Thx to Urban Athletics for donating a new pair, and the starting of another project UA-Shoe4africa where we hope to have shoe drives on certain days… coming soon.
Jesse on his site brought up a much better thing than age-grading, weight grading! But to let sparrows die we asked Andres Espinosa which time he thought was better - his 2:07:19 at Boston as an open runner, or his 2:08:46 as a master runner - he said, and we quote, “I was running more and training much harder for the 2:07” YET his age graded 2:08 is over 100% - Go figure!
More on age group records - the track records was way out of sync for the oldies - 3:37 for the 1500m? There is a slue of Kenyans who have ran faster than that time aged 35+
Speaking of birthdays it was Tomster’s on Sunday, Monsieur Mileage and also my good friend Sten-Olof - Congrats to all of them.
15:13 the first 3-miles for Paula in London!! 5k = 15:47 She slowed for the second 5k to a 16:30 but looked like a flippin‘ train with carnage in her wake as Susan Chepkemei could hardly run in a straight line an ‘eyesight‘ mile behind…. I finally got the chance to watch the race this weekend thanks to Urban and his DVD skills.
The Kilt 10k is on Saturday, and the hot name for the race is an Ethiopian with a PR of 28:05, Dereje Kebede, for the 10k - a national team member who is currently in Kenya training at High Altitude for the race…..
Not an Opel for the man born in a NY taxi.
Meanwhile Urban on Ndereba, “reminds me of Grace Jones with her glasses and cool look.” Funny speaking of which whilst I was in Boston I downloaded a lot of Eric’s CD’s onto my laptop, and one of those was the Jones’ Classic - what a voice, and a look!
My last word on Age Grading, Paul Tergat’s open world record is well over 100% - go figure, even nearly two years after he set the record. So what is a 100% performance?
So I dropped by the store the other day on my way across town to find Daniel Campos there - he is now working in the store, and Costanza was asking him whether he was faster than the Boss or not (well you can tell Costanza is not a supporter of the local races!) Daniel has been way in front this year… well excuses to Costanza he is currently out-of action due to having a huge bag of ice on his knee, which in turn came from an injection to the said joint.
Derba Bedada Medeksa of Ethiopia won the Belgrade Marathon on Saturday, ahead of Kenyan runners David Chepkwony and Collins Edep.
Medeksa finished in 2 hours, 12 minutes, 10 seconds in his second marathon, beating Chepkwony by 19 seconds and setting a record for the Serbian capital's race.
The previous record of 2:12:27 was set in 1994 by Ukraine's Vladimir Buhanov.
Russia's Inga Abitova won the women's race in 2:38:20, 20 seconds ahead of countrywoman Victoria Zoueva. Ethiopia's Tiringo Shiferaw was third in 2:39:47.
At the Tom LeB race - congrats to

I was standing on the line thinking it was nice to see Elarbi back on the scene, then the gun went off he half fell, grabbed my race number, ripped half of it off and nearly pushed me over…. So yes, welcome back - a great runner, but an awesome performance by the guy who must have already sealed the NY Runner of the year - Matt Downin…In the women’s race congrats to Alemtsehay Misganaw 24 WTC NY 21:56 2 Julia Stamps 26 NYAC NY 22:41 3 Leteyesus Berhe 26 WTC NY 22:50

A name familiar to NY Runners, Ethiopia's Araya Haregot pulled away in the final mile to win the second annual Salt Lake City Marathon on Saturday. 2 hours, 15 minutes and 14 seconds for his first marathon victory. Elly Rono was second (2:15:36) and Kenya's Michael Kimutai third (2:16:14). Poland's Dorota Gruca won the women's race with a time of 2:30:07. Anna Pichrtova of the Czech Republic finished second (2:34:47) and Krygystan's Irina Bogacheva was third in (2:37:48).

Olympic 1996 Champ wins a 50km Ultra, meanwhile passes the marathon
mark in 2:14! I ran some sessions with this man about 7-8 years ago, and he is an absolute running machine. When he runs he legs just go like a metronome with what appears no effort. After winning the Olympics he in (my humble opinion) made the mistake of going on a ‘world tour’ doing promos and stuff, and never became the runner he was fated to become.
West coact TGV, “I am getting feedback that some East coasters think I have lost my marbles out here.” Only on the car score…. And that has not changed East to West to the Rock of Gibralter.
Daniel Rono, 2 hours, 12 minutes, 29 seconds, captured the Madrid Marathon on Sunday in his first attempt at the distance, winning a race in which Kenyan men swept the first eight spots. Larissa Malikova of Russia broke the women's race record. #2 John Kirui (2:13:29) and #3 Willy Cheruiyot (2:13:34). Malikova finished in 2:33:27, Spaniards Sonia Martin (2:50:34) and Luna Garcia-Miguel (2:56:50) were second and third.

Former London Marathon champion Eamonn Martin thinks the Brits need to buckle up their shoes, and run like he did - damn hard. He said: "I think that's what is missing. In my day, it was a case of just having a go and really believing you could win the race.”
"This will be my last track season on British soil and there will be no more indoors," Kelly Holmes confirmed…. ‘may continue’ until the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne next March.
Twas a record number of runners completed the 2005 Flora London Marathon as the event celebrated its 25th Anniversary.
Organisers revealed a total of 35,105 made it to the finish line beating the previous best of 32,899 set in 2002.… Catching up to NYC that was, in my opinion, over-crowded last year.
Quote of the week, “unheralded Kenyan Martin Lel” Steve Cram. Well winning the world championships half marathon, and the ING NYC might be a hint that the guy is the Biz.
Alemu before her second runner’s up spot at Boston. Racking up an impressive resume nevertheless.
Urban in Stavanger, “Right now in Norway, Stavanger. Bizarre you can run in the middle
of the roads, almost zero traffic, then 20 mins later a car comes!!!”
15:24 CR for Friehofers women’s 5km.. We know an athlete who runs faster than that for her tempo runs… can we mention The Simba? Currently in Kenya….. Should be on any race directors wish list with 14:47 PR on the roads.
Belgrade Marathon - Isaac Kiprono (2:09) is the favorite, a resident of Iten and the little brother of Josephat who lives in Eldoret. Josephat was one of the first, if not the, to run two times sub 2:07, and they have another fast brother, Luke Kibet…’only’ 2:11
We hear that NYC’s winningist couple, The SC’s are doing the Willie Nelson down to Florida to take on the Master’s down there - the best of luck!

The Chubby Boss trying out what he sells in the park. Talking the park - we saw him running there yesterday on his loop.
Another race another day, and this weekend is the Tom LeBreq in Central Park, and for those a little more adventurous ‘the absolutely recommended Leatherman’s Loop’ race at Ward’s Pond. A classic, time permitting I would have gone to the latter, but I have a pending appointment in the city (that will though allow me to be at the former).
Sad to read: “Stairclimbing legend Chico Scimone of Italy, the oldest finisher of the 2005 Bank of America Empire State Building Run-Up, passed away earlier this month at age 94. Chico competed in the event an amazing 15 times, including every race since 1992.” on the NYRR site. I interviewed him back in 2000, he was a man of smiles and a true positivist.
Boston interests the greats, in recent articles both Deena Kastor and Paula Radcliffe have stated that they wish to run Boston as close as 2006! Imagine what a race, with Catherine the Great too. AS much as the critics bash the event it remains the most prestigious remembered marathon to win.

Mombasa International Marathon. The May 1 race will start and finish at the Mombasa Municipal Stadium.
The marathon, which has been attracting international athletes, is expected to have a bigger field this year.
Athletics Kenya's Coast branch chairman Dimmy Kisalu has confirmed that 10 foreign athletes have so far indicated they would enter the annual race. On that note if anyone knows the whereabouts of the former winner of that race, Zach Nyambaso, Please let me know as his brother is desperately trying to locate him. Last year Alex Mulinga from Uganda won this event.
Also coming up - The Madrid Marathon where former champion Daniel Kirwa Too plans to take another title… watch out for Cheruiyot’s younger brother Biwott.
Doug Kurtis, WR for 73 (the most by a couple) of 2:20‘s , feels the first-year OLN coverage "left plenty of room for improvement." - We agree! Carol Lewis, are you kidding me? Dwight Stones is great, but Track & Field Pleez, these guys don’t know diddley squat on the roads, or so it seems……
Anyway I was down at Café Habana, on Price? Yesterday eating some avocado & jalapeno sandwiches, with corn on the cob & parmesan when I noticed, amidst the 80-degree weather, that summer is really here… in the café was Mark Walhberg looking a little weatherbeaten - not that I noticed it was him, until we gotr outside.. Then, on a full stomach, not that I recommend this, I ran home without a problem! Strange - I thought that mixture would tie the belly in knots, but knots so!
83-degrees and setting the track on fire: Ali the Juiceman, Mia, Adam - welcome back. Chucky china - chin chining, The Commander sans Cindy, Kwasi cramping up, Anil the shoplifting arrant assistant extraordinaire, David P, Vanessa taking it up a gear, Cristina saving her kick, Alec (“Now do you know Nick C? The night before the NYC, he came to a party at my house…vase, drinking etc etc, I don‘t think he finished the marathon!”, Luiz in his Puma, Peter II - Ran like a demon after thinking he‘d run easy, Evelyn flying the 4‘s, Michelle back into the groove, Cara modeling the new green line at the store, AmexLee, Diane Queen of the Harriers - just made it down, Jim Wolfe - welcome back again, Greg speeding nicely, Susan fighting well, Tom threw in some surges, Jonathan - learning to get the stamina, Colleen with the Miami tan, Kim - welcome, & Alicia - stripping off and running smooth.
Athletics Weekly reports that Paula Radcliffe will be at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon, on June 4, where Hartmann, her physic, said she would run either the 1500m or 5000m.

Interesting story on Jesse’s site on the Armory Circus - should be good!
Meanwhile we see more writings on ‘Age Graded’ performances - so here’s my two pence worth…. IS there a 40+ runner out there who actually had a better performance before they moved into the age graded results? Something seems odd that 99% of the master runners have ‘rated’ their best performances when they topple into that age category.. According to the AG tables…
Edie Perkins 2:55, the first local at Boston? Stephanie Hodge 2:59:02, Jill R. Vollweiler of WTC in 3:01- congrats to all, I think Alison Wade of Fast-Women.com was out there too running….
Ham-Strunged. Paula Tergat, "It was a very good race, good weather and a good race. I was in the leading group and the tactics were working for me until I pulled a muscle and had to slow down.
A la Kenya's Margaret Okayo, winner of the women's race in 2004, said she suffered a hamstring injury at the 10km mark and could not cope with the pace.
"It is the first time I have suffered such pain in my career and I could not cope with the pace of the field. The early pace was so fast that I tore a hamstring just to keep up with the rest "
Paula Radcliffe and Jon Brown chosen for the IAAF World Championships (incorporating the World Marathon Cup), in Helsinki in August.
Radcliffe still to decide whether she will contest the marathon or 10000 metres, will be joined by Mara Yamauchi, Hayley Haining, Debbie Mason and Liz Yelling.
Brown links-up with Huw Lobb and Dan Robinson at the Championships in the Finnish capital.
From Nance, “I ran the London Marathon on Sunday and really enjoyed it. I finished in 3:21:32 (15 minutes faster than my best time previously in 2003 from NY!)” Well done, and see ya in the fall!
Lance Armstrong yesterday ended months of speculation by confirming that he will retire from cycling after the Tour de France in July.
From the Gym - the changing room is like the Buena Vista Club of Exercise - I swear some old guys never even make it up the stairs, but perpetually seem to live yapping in the locker rooms…. They need to get some Otis Redding into their Ears… ‘Shake!’
The Official Opening of Randall’s Island is this weekend - the 23rd to be precise when the Carl Icahn Stadium becomes the track for NYC.

From Urban,
"Forgot to mention Team Mizuno doing well, Jocye Chepchumba did 2:27:01
Tegla Laroupe 2:34.
Sun Yingje 2:42 she looked aweful already half way, don't know what
happened to the former sub 2:20 runner.
Antonio Pinto 2:29:22 he looked chubby totally out of form, dragging along."And great to hear that Anders Szalkai celebrated his birthday by jumping in to London, running a super 2:21 that felt easy! Fab news -
"jag firade med lopp i London; 2:21:27 (30). Nöjd, sprang "lugnt" andra halvan!"
from Nick of the Flyers, "I DID IT! I cracked the 3:45 mark as I wanted to. Cramps didn't set in till about mile 25, which was late for me -- maybe it was the salt tablet I had around mile 18. So clock time was 3:43:49. It doesn't seem like they do net time, though, even though we had a chip. That's the only bummer." Well done Nick. In the same race Kurt Le Vert qualkified for Boston 06! Well done.
Ah Boston, Walking the streets the other night looking for the Runner's World party, at a place called Mesa (Deserts the size of your thumbnail), I got lost - I was walking with Chrisy who is a Bostonian, that did not help as we found ourselves going round in circles and everyone we asked gave contrasting advice! I did note that the kids in Boston have a distinct style - it is called the jeans and T shirt look, dark colored short hair, ruddy faced and held monologues of monotalk that consisted of 'beer' 'yeah' and 'hot' - they may have dogs named Cicero for all I know, but they sure don't express any eccentricity... all this I was musing whilst walking and reminding myself how much NYC seemed to be more European than a Tuscany biscuit.. thank goodness sans the Operas (Got dragged to too many shrill voiced boreshows as a nipper to have sympathy for the lungs)...But anyway back to the RW party - there we met up again with Rod Dixon and his lovely wife, Drew and was it Mia (nice person anyway), some salmon, and of course the RW crew, as well as some NYRR folk.... speaking of whci I traveled back to NYC with Jonni, which was nice....
The Boston race was as always a cracker, such excitement causing me to swallow an alarming ten cookies per mile (not to include the chocolate smudge cake, or whatever it was called)....
Well I did throw a banana in there once in a while, basically only to take the taste of the Copley Plaza coffee away from my smacker....
back to Boston results.. aside from the first few placings (*if you read my story the coincidence the last American to place 4th in '87 was within 9-secs of Culp's time)... Congrats to the sper Oz - Andrew Letherby 31 Australia 2:16:38
beating Quaadi, a 2:07 Frenchman by a place, then two great American placings in the top 11 (Shay & Gilmore), and what about 46-yr old Joshua Kipkemboi againt he top mater at 2:19:28 - shocking, that guys just never gives up! Interestingly he always says "I'll take the masters' money, but I train like the boys!"

Congrats to GNY's Jake Cooper wins Jersey Shore Marathon in 2:36---a PR by 7 > minutes.
Congrats to Matt Downin and Ata' forgot her spelling who won at the Nike Town 4-miler... Chris Williams, a 15-year old soph at Collegiate High School (who hit a 4:23 indoor mile this winter) was 12th overall in a field of nearly 6,000 runners at the Niketown Run for the Parks 4 Mile. He won his age 15-19 division by over a minute in 21:08 (86.0%)- a name to watch!
well done to the Urban Pirates too - Jerry Macari, Kavan Greene, Paul Kavanagh, karen McIntyre, David Pultz, Adam Mulia, Lee Shufro, Camille Collette, Denny Chin, & Tom Cheslik.
Over in Boston I am wondering what happens to all the Poppy and Sesame seeds that gey lost in the world - must be millions of them scooting about.... I met up with Rod Dixon yesterday and had a great talk with him - he used to train in the Rockies up at Westchester back in the early 80's and he was telling me the story of NYC 83 in amazing detail. What a story - that was after chatting with Craig Virgin who I met for the first time since about that same time, yes it must have been 1983!! Craig also has some really good stories and is a character and a half - ask him about the New Orleans stories, or the French XCountry champagne sagas. A true gentleman of the running world, and that was the impression I got of him when I was zip years old and met him in the IAAF XC when I ran the nippers' race and he was adidas sponsored grown up. Boston Billy was meanwhile telling stories about why he has started tossing balls about - more of that if you read the HAll of Fame story on the Boston site (or up above...)
From Coach Bob Glover's diary, "1979---My 6th straight--and last--Boston Marathon. Came in off a 1:43 for 30K (5:30 per mile) that predicted a sub 2:30. But got hit with the flu and was sick for a week going in. Went for it anyway--hitting 1:15 at the half for the 2d straight year. But then my back went and soon after the stomach. Jogged to 21 and then grabbed the “T.” (Had I known Trolley Lady’s trick I could have still broken 2:30. Ha!)
The Greater New York AA women captured their 3d straight “unofficial” Boston Marathon team title for Coach Bob. The “Running Wild” newsletter stated:
“The past 2 years the BAA officials have promised to add a women’s team title. This year over 500 women competed, including several teams despite the fact that they were in no way encouraged to enter. Why are the officials so slow to change? It wasn’t until the 76th running of the event back in 1972 that women were officially allowed to compete at all. The winner that year was GNYAA’s Nina Kuscsik. Now in the 83d year of Boston they still award team prizes to the men, but not to the women. I was told that the main reason that they haven’t changed is because they didn’t receive any complaints. Very logical! Well gang, direct your complaints to: Will Cloney, BAA Marathon, Box 233, Prudential Station, Boston, Mass. 02199.”
Leading the way, and scoring for the 3d straight year for the non-winning, winning team was Lauri Pedrinan McBride who PR’d in 2:47:36 for 10th place----her 2d straight sub 2:50 and 2d straight top 10 Boston finish. Sharon Barbano was next in 20th in a PR of 2:53:27. The 3d scorer was Toshi d’Elia, who ran a PR---2:58:03--for 33d place overall.
The “Running Wild” newsletter notes under the title “TOSHI = SUPERWOMAN:”
“Toshi d’Elia worked so hard last year for the Atlanta, Boston, and NYC Marathons in her quest to break the 3 hour barrier that it was heartbreaking to see her just miss each time due to bad weather or blisters. She trained even harder for this year’s Boston, including some brutal track and hill sessions, and was rewarded for her perserverance. Her 2:58:03 was an American record for age 49+ and she became the first woman over age 46 to break the 3 hour barrier. She was honored by Sports Illustrated with a silver bowl and appeared in their April 30 edition in “Faces in the Crowd.” Her performance also earned her first in the masters (40+) division. But that too was unofficial as Boston only awards masters awards to men.”
(NOTE: the next year Toshi ran 2:57 at the World Masters Champs in Glasgow, Scotland to become the first age 50+ woman to break 3 hours. Every year they have had the NYRR awards program Toshi has been a nominee. And every year she sits at Coach Bob’s table.)" Yjanks Bob.

All is fine here in Boston - caught up with Lameck Aguta who is making a comeback, and currently looking for his twin brother - what a story that was back in Mexico 99 for old web site readers, maybe I will dig it up again... anyway he is now living in Chapel Hill... talking to Robert Cheruiyot this morning for breakfast and he was explaining that the nike shoes he got to run Lisbon in hurt his feet the whole way, and that caused him to let Tergat go at 20-km, funnily enough the first race Tergat ran in Nike shoes (Also after years with Fila) he also cut his feet up badly - enter the world of custom nikes! STrangely enough their filas were off the shelf! What else is new - ran Fresh Ponds this morning - what a fun event, I have been wanting to do the 5-miler since Iread about Lynn Jennings and Henry Rono's jaunts here....
Got a great interview with Boston Billy yesterday after the room had died down... eating like a pig as I always do in Boston, but luckily the trousers still fit... another coincidence, I met a man I last raced ten years ago, and I ask him to translate for me to Ahmaric and then it turns out since I last saw him he is now the husband of Gete Wami...
From Coach Bob Glover's Diaries, "10K in Central Park in 36:01---on mimimal training-- to help our month-old West Side YMCA team gain it’s first award--3d place. John Eisner (15th--33:53) led the way. Newsletter notes: “our newcomer from California, Robin Williams, added strength with his 20th place (34:21) showing.” Yep---that Robin Williams. He had just moved to NYC to go to acting school where he became buddies with a guy named Christopher Reaves. Yep ---Popeye and Superman. Funny thing, he thought I was funny. Ha!" Kool huh?
Talking to Andrew The Oz Letherby yesterday, check out the interview on RW, and he is saying that Boston and NYC are now institutions of his year - great to hear as he is the biz of Oz, check out the results he's had this year, I think a big breakthrough to the Sub 2:10 is imminent....

Her partner, Australian coach Nic Bideau, confirmed last night that they had prepared O'Sullivan's application for residency and would lodge it in the next few days.'

Great to see Mike Kosgei landing a job with some good people. Bruce Tulloh is an absolute Running Icon over in Britain, and whatever projects he is behind you can be sure they are fab ones. And this club seems just the biscuit.

Happy Birtrhday today to KingCre who has slipped into the shadows and ararely seen running in Central Park as was his custom a while back... over the weekend we have Anders '2:12' Szalkai, team puma, celebrating too - We are hoping Anders will be in great form for the Euro's 2006 that are to be held in Goteborg, as Anders is a Skane-man from that region... I believe he used to run for a Gothenberg club befoire Stockholm Sparvagen - Anyway we wish him all the best.
The exhibition I was talking about is Gregory Colbert's - check out his work. I like the name Ashes and Snow, it reminds me of Iceland, where you mix fire and ice on the same landscape. the sun in Iceland is twice the size that it is elsewhere in the winter, and the colors are a golden gold not seen in many places. On any ealry morning if you run up to the top of the city, near the aptly named Pearl, and look over the city it may be coated in clean sheet of snow with one million golden sparkles from the sun. Ah, you have to be there, it is like the Sun rise on top of the Rift Valley when you suddenly realize the horizon is more than a 180-degrees.Anyway talking Art I am superdooper happy with my new business cards! The printer called to say, "They're blurry, are you sure you want them like this?" I replied, "Print 'em up!" And I love them!

Check out Timothy Cherigat‘s interview today noon on RW-online.
'2:07 is okay, but 2:06 would be nicer' - Stefano Baldini, on plans for a Euro Record. The pace will be 63:00 for the rabbit, Silas Kirui,… well Baldini is a very strong closer.
And Tergat? "There are so many factors that you have to look at," Tergat told reporters on Wednesday. "There's the weather and how the pacemakers cope.
"Then there is the course which has changed and that is going to be even faster. To win here would be something very sweet."
Just to complicate things the London Marathon Course Record for Sunday’s time bonus of $125,000 is 2:18:56 for the women. That is because they discount the 2:15 set in London 2002 because of the male pace makers. One thing is for clear whatever the record, there is only one name - Paula Streets Ahead Radcliffe, the undisputed queen of all the records. Can’t blame her for any of the palaver , all she does is turn up and run like the wind, running like non ever before her.
More on Paula, “Instead of eating pasta in the final period of carbohydrate loading before a marathon, Radcliffe is now relying on rice and potatoes.”
I had a real yearning for a Dutch Apple Bagel today, they are only available at Au Bon Pain as far as I know, and there don’t happen to be any ABP on the UES… there’s an idea…. But as I have an F.I.T. party to attend I might have to pop into one downtown. Some things are just not replaceable, like the mighty bagel.
"I don't care about the money. I just want to win." Says Paula, who is arguably the hottest favorite in the race’s 25-yr history.
Chubby is running for the Nike $$ this weekend, so if you see him push him onward.. Who knows he said that his last tempo in the park was a spicer, so maybe it’ll be. I remember when Mike Openshaw got the CR at this event - he was in Niketown the day before the race, saw the flyer, signed up and off he went - first mile in about 4:37 and did not slow down very much - that was the year he won the English Nationals… it was also the year that the Gazelle won the race… and on that note we hear that Kimka Griffin will be contesting the race this year - she has also won this event, I think the year before the Gazelle did.
Tomorrow’s More Picture - George Hirsch & Kathrine Switzer.
The Sweat Shop at Bushy Park is organizing this memeorial run - check it out.
Down on the track, first off Colleen has a good absence slip -“my friend has an extra ticket to the Duran Duran concert tonight at the Garden so I am going to re-live my 1980s glory days!” But down doing the business was Mia, Herb the Verb trying out the new CRWX tights, Randy’s friend whose name I forgot, The Commander who was rocking mid town with the geetar last week, Vanessa ready for racing, Cristina the Kicker, Anil - ran well and looking in form, The Juiceman Ali sans the liquids, Luiz pushing well, ChuckyChina planning and shifting round the pack, Alec stepped up and is there. Peter II - great effort this week, David P chasing and reeling in, Kwasi on the fly, David G looking like a new athlete this year, Cara - the fashion plate is back on the track and looked super smooth, Manny from West Side, Tim - welcome, Greg striding well, HotRod Evelyn on fire, Alicia counting the seconds, Cruiser digging in and running well, And Jonathan ‘upgrading. Oh, Kurt Le Vert had a good excuse too, “My birthday!” Happy birthday to ya!
Good Art Exhibition on the West Side Hudson Gallery, called Noble and something….
A good film - Anh Hung Tran, Tran Anh Hung, The Scent of the Green Papaya - great film in fact.
2nd Master at Carlsbad - Ceci St. Geme CA 41 17:14. Still running strong, another day from the memory track days of the 90’s, and she was in the 80’s too

My updates here might be a bit patchy after Thursday as I will be up in Boston, but you can follow the scoop at the above link, as well as here. Check out Catherine Ndereba‘s interview today noon on RW-online.
Dropped by the store yesterday on my way from somewhere to somewhere else; chatting with Mr. Macari Senior, who is a very nice and interesting chap. Chubby himself was sitting as though doom had struck his doorstep, with a pensive frown.... pondering the weekend's races, and discussing the fact he's chisiling away the pounds, "Good, people ask me if I'm sick - always a good sign! My temptation is cheese, I‘m a big guzzler when it comes to cheese…."
Costanza, well Costanza was asking for the medal of honor - he was lying on the store floor, on his back, after popping one of his little yellow pills with a gray puppy licking his face saying things about 'love' and 'wonderment' and gotta be ‘strict’ - not sure whether he was talking to us, the owner, or the Mutt - but one things was for sure Chubby was soon asking to eat whatever Costanza had been popping.. Anil, now known as The Sc*****, according to Costanza, "He picks his *****" had disclaimers clamped on all his gossip east of the Jordan to the West - so unfortunately we can't report all that he had to say, too bad - as it was gossipy stuff.... Question - when Costanza was ‘talking‘ the dog why did he assume the voice of a fairy sitting on a cactus?
The Store's Corp Challenge team is looking good this year, "Ever since I kicked Costanza off the team...." Said the diplomatic Boss, Hm, we thought Costanza was a Rock on the team - not as solid as his diamond tooth, but anyway on Thursday he is having his knee injected with drugs so he'll be out of action for a while regardless - we heard him asking a woman whether she thought Childbirth or Knee Injections were more painful with an authority that makes one wonder if he'd experienced both...
On that note Costanza (beret-less again), as he sidestepped the issue of Anil's latest Blind Date with the 94th St Brunette (who is so blind she has no name to date), wants it know that he has been married for over thirty years! Imagine the Chubby Boss is not even One yet on the marrying score card! Anil and I have not even been born!
One of the original Fat Tuesday’s, and running 1:19 for the Half in Central Park aged 45! We give you Carmen!

We hear from Urban in London, who will be here in NYC to run for Urban in the fall, “Congrats on the new site, looks cool and better to read too!” Way to go!
Coachingthe Flyers last night in Central Park - bumped into Mike Keohane, nice guy and a great coach, hope to see him racing soon… loadsa people all over as the weather was just right for running - Saw the Boston bound Donna & Urs, and Nick who is doing Jersey Shore. Moguls Nance wanted to know - “Is the Run Urban marathon program open to any one regardless of club affiliation?” Yes! Any runner who wishes to train! She also says she loves thesite, so smiles to you Nancy!
Going back to the Gentlemans’ gabbery at the Store this morning, we were yapping about Body weight - Mr. Macari is currently cutting the alcohol to shed a few pounds, I have noticed the weight drop recently a couple of pounds and actually I have not been drinking very much as of late - so there may be something in it… in fact if I have a couple of beers per week that’d be a lot. My latest tipple has been Silver Tea - hot water with a spoon of sugar, believe it or not I love it, used to drink it in Iceland.
News coming up at the store of an impending store party - we hope to have four world class athletes there to share the pizza with. Knowing Chubby he won‘t be serving Silver Tea.
I heard from Mike Mykytok the other day, a legend in his own right, have to go and see him one of these days as it has been an age since I was last at his place.

Victory in Rotterdam Marathon for Lornah Kiplagat
Starbucks reports,
“Much was expected from Lornah at the Rotterdam Marathon last Sunday. The training went very well and all the tests told us she was able to run a personal best. She started in the right way and ran the first 5 K in 16:45. 10 K in 33:25 and half way in 1:11:11. She was planning to run with a negative split because the course is perfect for that. However, already after 5 K she got cramps in the quads because of the rain and cold wind. She tried to run faster, she tried to run slower but she didn't get warm and the cramps stayed. At 30 K she had to slow down and the last 4 kilometers she ran 4 min. per kilometer. She couldn't push because she was afraid she couldn't finish otherwise. Anyway, she won the race overall and became Dutch Marathon Champion. She finished in 2:27:36. So, she was happy with the victory but very disappointed with the time. She will now take a vacation in Kenya and her next races are the Glasgow Women's 10 K on May 15 and the Manchester 10 K one week later. She will make in May also a decision if she will run the 10,000 meter in Helsinki or that she will focus on a Fall marathon.”
Questions about this page changing yesterday - The answer is; The official Urban Athletics site is to be launched shortly. This page has served for five years as the un-official page, but the time has come when Chubby & Cara are going for a professional version (Can you blame them? Ed‘s note). Give me a break, in the mailbag from Leo, “Hey I got to give it to you, I like ur new web page, it’s cool man.…” Thanks Leo….
This made me laugh -
From the site of Joe LeMay, “In just the last six months, I seem to have slowed down a bit. I retired summer 2002, and then, I was slower because I stopped training so much. Now, it seems I'm slower regardless of how I train so I guess muscles start to atrophy at 38. If you ever see me run 2:15 again, just turn me in to the drug testing people, because that's the only way I could do it at this point.” I must go to Danbury one of these days to check out his and Ellen‘s pig, Mingus the applechomper…. And go to Stu Leonard‘s, my fav place for pigging out in the aisles.
Mary, Queen of the NYRR - Certainly proving she is in touch with the roads!
More Marathon results: 1 Susan Loken 41 AZ 2:45:35* 2 Janet Robertz 45 GRTE MN 2:48:59 3 Corinna Cortes 44 MCNY NY 3:07:44 (New CR! Kim Merrit in 1975 had the old one!) #4 one of our favs - Christina Bilsky 41 MCNY NY 3:12:21 Tough to run a marathon inside Central Park, I take my hat off to these women.
And winning the Half was our Fat Tuesday friend -

Yesterday in history - 1961 Apr 11, Folk singer Bob Dylan performed in New York City for the first time, opening for John Lee Hooker. He was 19 years old.....that makes him 63 now.... How many concerts later? Still a top performer and money maker.
The IAAF decided to institute a 3-year post-citizenship hold on the kinds of instant nationality changes (to Qatar, Bahrain, etc) that have plagued the sport in recent years. The 36 months can be reduced to 12 if all parties agree - sounds like a chequebook clause to me that won’t help anyone!
Starbucks tells us, “Limo got cramps.” at Rotterdam.

Chubby tells us he was at Shore Restaurant over the weekend, “I was the only table in there, and then I was drinking, coupled with feeling sorry for the place I probably tipped too much…. Chubby said the food was not bad… though the shrimps were pretty Spartan, “We’ve only got three left…” was heard.
At the More Marathon - it should be called the Magical More Marathon, there was amazing energy. Incredible out there, so many smiles from all the runners. I was standing watching first with the Chubby Boss, then with Bernie the Chairman, George Hirsch of RW fame, Mike Frankfurt from the NYRR Board and the Armory fame, Kathrine Switzer - a cornerstone of the event, Grete Waitz - The First lady of the marathon. We saw wonderful races - The Half was won by Larisa of WS, Mary Queen of the NYRR was up there, Colleen DeReuck out there, Carmen Troncosco cruising, Kyomi - her first race back, Eileen of the Flyers zipping along, Stace the Ace… the atmosphere was electric largely in part to the NYC’s undisputed Running MC, The Voice of the NYRR’s Mr. Ian Brooks - it makes the difference! (More More Pictures all week - tomorrow the Queen of the NYRR).
Nike town 4-miler this weekend, the prize is usually gift certificates from 500 down. I remember back in the day running this race, 200-meters to the line I am in the lead with a small group.. Somebody goes by ‘Oh well, 300’, then Smokin J went by too, ‘Okay 200’ then Trevor Murray also(!), I was damn, when is my kick going to arrive?? It never did, but I did get a pair of socks in the raffle.Hm, I suppose I can talk more about it now; I hate it when you go to a race and the raffle prize is better than the overall running prize, but this is now so often the case.
You would think that these days I would be lobbying for the prize that I stand a chance of winning (the raffle), but nothing puts on a ’print’ of a non-runner’s event when you go to a race and the first prize is a trophy, and the raffle prize is a flight to Ireland for two.
Yes, yes, I can understand clearly why race directors do it, but for me running is about doing your best, and competing - even if you are not winning and a huge raffle prize against a trophy spells ‘community games’ to me instead of Race. One of the first races I ever ran was in Iceland and I was lucky enough to win the race - I won a plastic trophy. Then came the raffle, and it was for a pair of Nike Running shoes. Well low and behold I won the shoes too. In a good natured fashion a few people called out, ‘he shouldn’t be allowed to win’ and ‘re-raffle’…. I mean if they had won the raffle would they have swapped a plastic trophy for the shoes? Nope. Why? Of course it was a better prize.
Milan, Italy - Kenyan Wilson Kebenei Kiprotich won the 34th edition of the Stramilano Half Marathon in a new world seasonal best of 1:00:11**. The women s race saw a victory by Hungary's Aniko Kalovics who took a gun to tape win in 1:11:57.(Not counting Lisbon** as it has a 80+meter net drop). #2 John Yuda (Tanzania) 1:00:25
3 Lawrence Kiprotich (Kenya) 1:00:30

Denmark’s Wilson Kipketer, the World record holder both indoors and out for the men’s 800m has decided to retire after he has attempted to defend his European title in Gothenburg, Sweden in 2006.
“It was in Gothenburg that I won my first World Championships in 1995,'' PA International reported that Kipketer had told TV2. “So I want to finish my career there where it all began in earnest.”Funnily enough when Iwas running track in Sweden in 93/94 Kipketer was one of the runners on the circuit. He was mainly a 1500m runner in the early days, and showed nothing of the explosion that would happen. Living in Copenhagen he was forever in the South of Sweden (Less than an hour away). He was a lousy darts player, but a true gentleman of the track. He now has a fantastic house in Kenya in the ‘runner’s estate’ and the Berko and I were staying in his second house, an ancillary building off the main thing, the last time I was over in Kenya. Personally I hope he has a sublime season, and ends on a high note - a very classy runner.

Contaminated Roma tomatoes were the likely cause of a string of salmonella outbreaks that made 561 people sick in the United States and Canada last summer, U.S. health officials said on Thursday.
Saying good bye to Marty at Trump he was on the treadmill with Bob Costas, whilst Ms Aretha Franklin was pulling in… Christine Applegate too, and John Stamos & Tory Amos - like the who’s who hotel.

Rotterdam rain & wind
- ‘Lornah Kiplagat 1:11:13 at the half’ that was the news I first heard…
1. Lorah Kiplagat (Ned) 2:27:36 (national champion)
2. Ana Dias (Por) 2:31:27
3. Isabel Eizmendi (Spa) 2:33:14Men’s race - Jimmy Muindi won after breaking away after 23 miles to finish in 2 hours, 7 minutes, 49 seconds and lead a Kenyan sweep.
Jackson Koech was second in 2:08:01 and defending champion Felix Limo was third in 2:09:01. Long time readers of this site will recall the Muindi stories, needless to say he has been on the scene for an age and a half.
25-yrs since the Ruiz stories - "I last saw her in Miami, about a year after [1980] at the Orange Bowl 10-kilometre race," Gareau said. "I finished the race and she came up and introduced herself. I didn't know what to say. I asked her why she did that [the Boston ruse]. She insisted she ran the race and would do it again. I just shook my head. I hope, in her life, she got some wisdom. By the way, people are mistaken when they say she took the subway in Boston. There was no Metro along the course. She took the subway in the New York Marathon, the race in which she said she qualified for Boston."
Online registration has just opened officially opened at www.lvmarathon.com. “For the first running event in history to shut down the world famous Las Vegas Strip so you can run this awe-inspiring neon corridor marking the start of the New Las Vegas Marathon on December 4, 2005“. To be honest that is not much of a draw for someone like me, I mean running down the strip in the morning is rather different than driving down at night right?

The latest from Rotterdam, “The men said they will go out fast on Sunday. They predict times of 2:05 and if the weather is good even better. In the first group: Felix Limo, William Kiplagat, Jackson Koech, James Rotich, Jimmy Muindi, Titus Munji, Jose manuel Chema Martinez and Tadeyuki Ojima. They all said they will go for 63 half and they want to win. Others probably in the first group: Cheboiboch, Mohammed Mourhit and some debutants. I guess it will be a bloodbath because the pace will be very high and I am sure not all are capable of running these times. Will be fun!” Y’see only the best gossip on this site, that was from Starbucks - thanks.
We hear from Britain, and George who’ll be here next weekend for the Nike 4-miler, “For your information, I believe the reigning English Cross-Country champion, Glyn Tromans, has retired at the age of 36 due to injury. He tore his achilles tendon during the World Cross-Country race in France last month, and was advised to rest for a considerable length of time. Another retirement was announced by Martyn Rees, who in 2003 ran under 51 minutes for 10 mile as a 50 year old, and I believe in the same year set an Over 50' record for 5000 metres of 14'51.” Thanks George, and have a great time in NYC.
A busy day for me in NYC - Caught up with Chubby at the Store and Cara. Anil was there too planning his socials for the evening.. Then it was over to Kimka Mansions to see The Russian Rocket, and Kimka. The Rocket and I went to Starbucks for four caramel mariachis (the second round with whipped cream) and gossiped for a long while on the middle median of Broadway - long time, we used to spend a lot of time together but of late I have not seen him for an age… then it was a whizz downtown to interview Kathrine Switzer who has a beautiful view over Central Park, and of course wonderful to see her as always… a chat, tea, and a natter later it was back up town, and a zip in the park - seeing Monsieur Mileage and a heavily pregnant Madame Mileage too on the Bridle Path! Coincidence; when at Kathrine’s the doorbell went and a bouquet of flowers arrived, from Madame’s mother! Small world. Then it was back up town to call Catherine Ndereba. The day didn’t finish there, then… well that story is not finished so more of that later.
We heard from Suneet, glad to say, “I'm still on this side of the pond though travelling a lot (you know its bad when the BA check-in staff recognise you and know your name!)….” And hoping he’ll be back on track soon.

“The reigning Olympic Marathon champion Stefano Baldini of Italy has risen to first place in the Men’s Road Running – Marathon Event category - in the latest IAAF World Rankings.
Baldini has not competed since the Rankings were last published but the previous leader, Felix Limo of Kenya dropped to 12th place due to the 365-day-rule, as his victory from last year’s Rotterdam Marathon is now too old to be included in the calculation.” We never understand these rankings - Limo won a HIGH quality race last month, also won a marathon in a spiffy time of 2:06 AFTER the Olympics, and drops?
Here’s a question - Is there any country in the world where a man who has ran three marathons in the usual time frame -spring-fall-spring, with no seasonal rest all in 2:06 would not make the Olympic Team bar Kenya??
Seen on Jesse’s Orange site - “April 11 through 20 is Dine In Brooklyn, where some of the borough's top restaurants offer three-course meals for $19.55 (in honor of the Brooklyn Dodgers' 1955 World Series victory). Which is awsome, since didn't feel like cooking for the next few weeks.” Kool, I wonder if I could go to Juniors and have three slices of their cheesecake for a 3-courser?
I got a card from RW today, what groovy envelopes they have - they’re bronze!
‘Kenyan bantamweight boxer David Munyasia, who was expelled from last year s Olympics after a positive dope test, has admitted chewing the leaf of the qat plant before the team arrived in Athens.’ Poor guy, obviously a case of a social addiction making its punch. I don’t think Gat can help someone be alert in the boxing ring! Or train harder - quite the opposite.
Suzy Favor Hamilton pregnant? I remember her from the days when I used to run track - Imet her in Scandinavia, a nice enough person and one with tremendous spirirt on the track. She had loads of critics, and undeservedly in my eyes when she sometimes quit in races - she was always red lining, and sometimes you just inch over the mark. Here would be the cue to reel off my SVH story, but I won‘t (thank goodness).
Heidi Klum is marrying a Seal - I wonder what Brigette Bardot will have to say to that!
More on Robin Williams, he used to run for Bob Glover’s West Side Y team!
Down on the 6th ST track,in glorious weather conditions we might add - cycling home sans gloves in a T Shirt I remembered two weeks ago I was in three jackets, two gloves, and freezing! Bad news was that apparently Soccer is a sunshine sport - the track had hundreds of maradona’s with bladders to kick around! Randy Sax - Boston bound, Mea- welcome, Ali The Juiceman started like a torpedo, Kwasi -100, ChuckyChina looking like the runner he is again, Kurt Le Vert smiling from his PR, Peter II - welcome back, Anil - We had to edit his comment, something to do with a stick…, David P- in his snappy ING wear, David G in rouge, Michelle - welcome back! Greg - welocme, and Susan. Alicia - a friend of Evelyn‘s, AmexLee, worked well, Hotrod Evelyn in Blonde and going to be drumming up the women in the team, Alec - looking forward to visiting his house4 in the hills this summer, Jose - ready for London, Cristina smiles on the track and a kick of a tiger, Vanessa from Brasil loking smooth, Diane Queen of the H alwys prepared to do the work, Herb the Verb - nice of him to cheer on the troops, Robie the Englishman IX, AmexChris - running steady, Jonathan- welcome, Luiz like a lion last night, and Tomster in his new togs and a cool singlet…. Excuses? Charlotte sends - Ross is on tv tonight, that’s a good one!

Felix Limo interview today on Runner's World.
Happy Birthday Sir Roland Soong - over in the Far East.
More Marathon this weekend - go out and support, because it is not easy running a 26.2-miler inside CP!ON Marathons, no surprises (haile-expected) to read that Haile Gebrselassie and Gezahegne Abera have both pulled out of the Flora London Marathon.
The man of Providence -sad to read that
Mark Carroll, the Grete’s Gallop CR holder, Lost His Funding From Ireland. No is’land hopping; he says he'll remain faithful to his homeland. "The plan is to represent Ireland in the 10,000m at this year's World Championships. Running for Ireland means a lot more to me than 11,000 Euro."
Kurt Le Vert visually explains his nickname here.
What a name - the winner of the Dakar Gran Prix 400m - #1 Talkmore Nyongani (ZIM) 45.72Boo‘s to the competition though, its longest event was a men‘s 800m, nothing over 400 for the women -
1 Werner Botha (RSA) 1:47.35
2 Abdoulaye Wagne (SEN) 1:48.27
3 Yassine Bensghir (MAR) 1:48.56 I can hear the race director now, “The crowds don’t want to see long races….” Tell that to Bislett fans.
The Kilted Demons of Central Park here at the Trump Tower before jumping across the road for the race. Tattoed Terry wearing his Aussie Rules shirt, I was looking for a Mizuno tartan singlet, but thankfully could not find one - what do they say? Tartan once a year is OTT. Well I have one more Tartan event, though being in Scotland I think I‘ll leave the face paint off else risk getting stoned as an imposter.
Quote of the Day, “I am not a vegetarian because I love animals; I am a vegetarian because I hate plants. -- A. Whitney Brown”
Great Article forwarded by Kurt Le Vert on one of my all-time favs. The majority probably don’t remember this guy but he was very similar in talent to Steve Ovett - would have been a legend by now, had he lived.
Pam Reed, the Uber runner, is planning to run the London Marathon (Sunday morning), fly to Boston (Sunday afternoon), run to the start of the Boston Marathon (Monday morning), and run the Boston Marathon (noon, Monday). They're raising funds for a charity that supports Mexican children - I hope to see her out there.
Central Park was like Picadilly Circus yesterday due to some well directed rays of zippy sunshine… about time, but I could do with less traffic.
The Flyers workout last night was a good one, plenty of cheery faces zipping up and down the hill on 91st - some great efforts too in there. I took my camera as I wanted to take some snaps of the runners coming up the hill for form checks, but they turned out a bit blurry as I was shouting words of encouragement at the same time…. … Afterwards I hooked up with TGV who is fitting in with life at the Trump quite well, “I can get used to coming back from a run having my omelet and coffee ready…” On Sunday night his son was in the elevator at the same time as Robin Williams, and in fact recognized him as they were waiting for the elevator - “That’s Robin Williams!” The kid said, and when they were in the elevator he started reeling off all the appearances of Williams’ with voice overs etc…. Marty's wife made a brief apology saying 'I hope you don't mind type of thing' and Williams quipped something back, not really that funny - that everyone knew now... It was the same night when the TV documentary was aired and apparently it was not quite a complimentary show! Poor Robin was probably trying to sneak up alone to his suite to hide for the evening.
Well we went to Totonno’s which still has fine pizzas, not bad beer and cheesecake either, however we did not risk trying the coffee there as there was a starbucks right across the road…. TGV is thinking already about his next car, "I want the six speed, and to be a good citizen I could just drive it on the weekends..." We bet he will get the massarati before the porsche six speed.... one thing is for sure, we won't have to wait long till we find out....
Over in Kenya, “Thugs broke into the rural homeof Olympic Gold medalist Ezekiel Kemboi and stole some of his medals and a vehicle, among other things… sad story!

Wednesday The Spring Track is Back, and with it a ‘promised 64-degree’ weather day!A reminder that Ali’s party is on Saturday night….
Kurt Le Vert’s 5k, “Well not as fast as I would have liked but still about a 40 second PR.” Man, I’d take that! Well done.
I was on the treadmill yesterday, doing another recording, whilst trying to not pick up the burps of the guy on the next treadmill who was watching golf whilst running into the side hand rail every other minute, also trying to land with the heaviest foot steps so the microphone picked up the beat when I happened to run into my friend who is trying to become a fashion designer - he has already had a center layout in Elle magazine, and now has a show downtown that I will make all efforts to see; anyway the crux of this is what types of music do people like to run to? A quick forum search revealed that Bruce Springsteen is the #1 choice for tread millers around the globe. On that note after the Flyers workout tomorrow I am going out with TGV who is in town for the week for NYC pizza. Going to my fav place on the UES for sit in…. but not my fav take out place….
Running USA reports, “At the 20th Carlsbad 5000, Ethiopia/Mizuno's Tirunesh Dibaba ran 14:51 to tie Paula Radcliffe's world road record….” I suppose Lornah’s 14:47 does not count right because it was only certified by the Dutch Athletics Federation - the mind boggles…. Well after seeing The Simba go through a 5k split in a 10k race barely past the 15-minute mark I would say that this record is easily breakable by both athletes.Watch out for Rotterdam this weekend! Predictions - If the weather is good a super, super fast time by the Limo Munster! And a win by the Simba. Waiting to hear an update from Starbucks on her form.
Letherman’s Loop - if anyone wants to borrow the course DVD let me know.
On a dirt track in Eldoret, high altitude, and lane #1 will twist your ankle if you run in a straight line there was a track meet on Fri/Sat - There were 300-entrants in the men‘s 5k! Thus heats were necessary!

This was a race set up originally to develop Euro-talent, and give Euro runners a chance to get in to a fast 10,000 as races like Oslo‘s Bislett these days say… “27:19 is the slowest we‘d like you to be…” and there was nowhere for 28:00 men to run. A good notion, and one that is now developing into a strong team comp - guess one can figure Spain had things wrapped up for the men.
Baseball, not my field of expertise, but it seems with the helping hands of Randy Johnson the missing link has formed a chain of power that’ll lead to a fab season for the Yanks who have the first $200 million payroll in baseball history.
Islamic Fundamentalists Attack Women's Race In Pakistan, Injure 18. They attacked with sticks and stones for the most part. Yeah, be a hero - attack some one out for a run, there’s substance behind a belief.
We read on RW, “New York City is pushing its ethnic diversity, saying every athlete will have a hometown crowd.” For the Olympics, and it is very true - this is the melting pot of the world - every creed is here...

Ann & Cara at the awards night where Ann won the Best Female 30-39 runner of the year.
Congrats to all the others that won. Our scant report on Friday did not pay respects to all the winners as to be honest I did not know who won on the night as I was distracted by so many events and conversations.

I liked this picture TGV forwarded, and speaking of which he was in town this weekend.
TGV had the trip from Hell - in San Diego 7:30 Am on Saturday, expecting to check in to the Trump at 3:30... I dropped by at 6, and no check in… Anyway he calls and says he is stuck in Syracuse(?)…. He actually checked in to the Trump at 2-AM on Sunday morning!
The plane was diverted, then they were stuck on the runway, to top it all the baggage was delayed 1 ½-hours! Then he ‘lost’ an hour with the clocks zipping forward, so it was no surprise that he was not going to do the race the same morning! The Scotland Run. Instead Tattoed Terry and I donned the Kilts and the face paint (yep we got some stares at the Trump, where Robin Williams is staying this weekend amongst others)….
Congrats to race winners

Two urban Age grouper winners,
Kathleen Horton & Jerry Macari, and congrats to the other Pirates- GREENE KAVAN COLLINS CHRISTIAN MCINTYRE KAREN PULTZ DAVID CHIN DENNY…. We saw a host of people out there including Michelle Bleakley who PR‘d, and The Steph-racer, Peter Gambo‘ the RW-man was out there, Queen of the NYRR, Mary was out and running… The Chairman Bernie of course, and he was headed for coffee at the boathouse as I later crossed the park (in a dream with the ipod too loud). My legs were aching from the get-go, I would like to say from over training but in actual fact it was a day in a recording studio down on Broadway.. Strangely enough, whilst reading a script, I had to run on the spot - the recording took off and on six hours, and that is a lot of running on the spot I can tell you, my calves were like shredded wheat with barbed wire veins…
Rejuvenating in Starbucks later with TGV and listening to a great Shoe4Africa initiative he has coming Sylvia came in from ATC (always a pleasure, and she was relating stories of German air trips not to be taken), and then Scott from the Flyers came in - a driving force for NYC 2012.….
Anyway I was wandering across the Southern end of the park (as I decided to walk home as the little drizzle was quite pleasant) I met some nice people from Scotland who wondered why I was wearing a T Shirt that said Real Men Wear Kilts yet was not wearing a kilt - not bothered to explain the morning’s activities we started talking about apartments, and the wonderful buildings that surround the periphery of the park. When I first came to NYC I found a fav building on Fifth, now I have to find the finance! Yeah right. I was actually quite happy with my tree house in Amsterdam..but that’s another story for another day.

Remember that daylight savings time begins at 2am Sunday. An hour less in the bed.
The Marathon season really kicks off in a week from now - at the Rotterdam event, one of the world’s most prestigious races and for a long time a WR course. The week after we have London and Boston, I hope to be at the latter as has become the habit since a few years back. For me it is the classic marathon, and if anyone thinks it is second tier they should watch the actual footracing that goes on year after year at this race - awesome. Catherine Vs Alemu (?) last year was nothing short of dramatic….
I was listening (yes) to Seinfeld the other day and I noticed that the studio inserted laughter is tailored like a well cut bookshelf - I mean every time you go to a room where people are laughing there is always someone who laughs longer than others, louder, or with a raucous cackle…. Not with Seinfeld!Better to watch -

Great to see everyone, and it was a fab night as expected. I went down with The Chubby Boss, himself a nominee, and we had a natter about the various faces that make NY the scene it was. Nice to see Meb there, The Senator, supporting NY Running… Marty from CT coming in, as were some people from the Essex Running Club NJ, Kathrine Switzer and Roger Robinson - two of my favs, the legendary Gary Murhcke, all the NYRR people… and I actually never found my table to sit with and ended up sitting with the Harriers who were nice - great club, and accommodating (thank you Douglas), heard a few snippets from the Queen of the H's Iceland trip... then as the desserts ended I moved over to the Urban Table - who had not really dug into their desserts (lucky me), Costanza was the fashion item of the night with his Beret, and Cara looked super cool in her black outfit, Stumpy was there, “Let it be known that Anil challenged me, not the other way round…” (a la basketball), then the Dudes came over (Camille and Heather) and we popped over to say hello to the Peters’ - Bonne Chance a la Paris Marathon next week!
Missed Ursula who had sick kids, Saw Rita, and the Russian Rocket, Fidel Staab was in stunning Orange - and speaking which Sidney Howard won again, as did Alston who ran 52.7 for the 400 in his mid fifties and has the smoothest stride in the city… unfortunately the Etjiopian Girls from WTC did not seem to have made it…. Heard Spaghetti’s name being called out for the men’s 30-39 but did not see him. Herb the Verb was there in his club singlet. Good to see Michael & Denise back again “I’m at 40mpw” she said after stepping out of the wheelchair a month ago… Saw The Rope again “I’m floating” and of course RLX picking the hardware. The Rube won again, as he must do with such results, and it was good to see Zoomalong and the little nipper there…
Tony the coach from CPTC had some words of wisdom.. Yep quite a night - and every one was leaving with the Red Mugs…. Bernie, the Chairman, and Sue were seen full of smiles, and I was glad to see (though disappointed not to hear more of) The Voice of the NYRR, Ian Brooks. Warren King was out there too… ah, who was not there - this is the night when the runners come out to dance…. Even our Queen of the Age Group Rez runners, Ginette was there is style - got to meet her nice family….
03/31
Club night tonight featuring Deena Kastor, Meb Kef., Alan Webb amongst others….
Sally Barsosio, Wilberforce Talel, Paul Koech, Gilbert Okari, John Kipsang Korir, John Cheruiyot Korir, and Andrew Letherby - what a stellar field at Cherry Blossom this year!
Glad to read that Westchester Track Club is one of thirty clubs that have been designated as
Elite Development Clubs for the 2008 Olympiad. Lindsey Scherf‘s recent 18th in the world juniors is only a single result of many fine ones they keep on churning out.
Fantastic weather here in New York, and as TGV arrives from San Diego he should feel right at home - finally we have some spring weather. We hear that Scotland is sending over some elite runners for the Scotland Run - national pride, or something…. Could be some fast running in the park.
Talking about the park I was cycling round the six mile loop yesterday with Zoe Cassavettes, the daughter of the famous John - Dirty Dozen, and film directing fame. We bet that Zoe will be a huge hit herself in her ventures.
Down on the track - The Commander with the last repeat being the fastest, The Juiceman looking back on line, Chucky China in the groove again, Jose - ready for London, Anil - with his mind on other things, AmexChris - welcome back!, Alec - solid and quiet tonight(!), Queen of the Harriers back from Rackajack, Kurt Le Vert - a defo PR this Sunday in his 5k, Kwasi shooting rockets, Ross who actually owns a kilt, and we hope he will be there on Sunday - albeit sans the kilt as it is a nice 10-lb one, Randy sax - great to have him back, doing the Boston miles, Rob from England missing the beers, Cristina smiling through the big kicks, Lissy out in her zone - super sess, David - finding someone to chase down, Tom getting back into paying the dues of pain, Vanessa from Brasil - Bom Dia, Colleen - we were waiting for the fighting last 400..., Shawn - little ham twinge, but looked great prior to, and Charlotte - getting ready for The More Half next week - great group, great personalities. Lucky coach!
KENYAN Isabella Ochichi is being backed to break Paula Radcliffe's UK all-comers' record in May's BUPA Great Manchester Run. North O’ England. The Organisers believe Ochichi is capable of dipping under Radcliffe's 10-kilometre road-racing record at the event on May 22. However we think they have the acorns on the wrong runner - Lornah The Simba Kiplagat is our top ace for the race… and all the best for the defending Champ Sonia O'Sullivan who is running a little over distance, but always performs great.
Tatooed Terry reports, “England thrashed Northern Ireland 4-0 in the first of this week's two World Cup qualification games, and we're hoping for a similar result against Azerbaijan tonight. This all means — thankfully — that regular club sides had off last weekend, as well as the irregular ones like West Ham United.”

Urban Environmental Challenge 10k this weekend up at Van Cortlandt Park - last year 35 or 36-minutes won it. Read more in Metrosports!
City-Pier-City - a great race, flat as an ironed pancake, and one I have done a few times, it is in Holland:
1 Moses Kigen KEN 61:45 2 Sammy Chumba KEN 61:46 3 Jason Mbote KEN 61:49 4 Christopher Cheboiboch KEN 61:51
1 Mary Ptikany KEN 70:18 2 Kutre Dulecha ETH 70:54 3 Aniko Kalovics HUN 71:08
Berkane, Morocco - Kenyan Benjamin Limo won the third edition of the "Foulées Internationales de Berkane" 10km in a time of 28:29, ahead of compatriot Chamba Luniac Kipro (28:44), with Morocco’s Mohamed Amyne 28:55. El G was the honoraray guest, back from NM.
The only gel with a guarantee.
Another celeb on hand at Dongio, Switzerland - Where Cosmas N’deti was the official race starter, how times flies, it is ten years since his last Boston victory-

Greek sprinter Katerina Thanou is eager to compete again after being cleared of missing a drugs test. She will most likely be banned from Europe and will have to limit her racing to home country events, where she’ll probably become a national hero and a martyr of all sorts.
Yesterday was the anniversary of… “6,700 participants turned out in drizzle to complete the gruelling run” the first ever London Marathon, in 1981. A mark of the success of that first London Marathon could be seen the following year when more than 90,000 people from across the world applied to take part.
The Commander was in LV for a wedding, “Our friends got married at the Graceland Chapel in a 10 minute ceremony, but Cindy and I missed it because of horrendous traffic on the strip. It took 55 minutes to go 3 miles, and we got there 10 minutes after the ceremony was over. We could have run there in half the time, heels and all.” That’s what happens when you have a 10-min ceremony.
A longer ceremony is Club Night - at the Urban Table Anil and Costanza will be having their ’Spot an Ex of Anil’s competition’ with the odds going even money for the ten plus… something not ten plus - Stumpy has challenged Anil to a one-on-one at Basketball on the West Side Courts, “Ah the shame” said Chubby, “they better not be wearing Urban Shirts” - these are the courts where the nearly NBA kids hang out… Stumps has a vertical leap of a grounded crocodile we hear, and Anil was on his school team, too bad we’re talking the peewees “I was a late bloomer…” No news of whether Costanza will be decked out in the beret on Thursday night though.…
Recruiting - Can you work weekends (A must) Urban Athletics needs you, and will pay you too! Call Cara at 212-828-1906 for jobs.
Johnnie L. Cochran Jr., who became a TV superstar lawyer after helping clear O.J. Simpson during a sensational murder trial in which he uttered the famous quote ''If it doesn't fit, you must acquit,'' died Tuesday. He was 67.
Cochran died of a brain tumor at his home in Los Angeles, his family said.
And Young American Dathan Ritz adds his name to the list of impressive entrants at Carlsbad - if he makes the top five it will be an awesome result as the field is stacked!

The idea of a Marathon Gran Prix is an interesting one, and in fact before RW online ran an article about it a couple of years I was sitting with a group of athletes in mid town who had won most of the big ones, and we were discussing what would make up a Gran Prix. Around the table there was one woman who was close to the criteria - Joyce Cheppy Chepchumba. Everyone agreed who simply can not leave Japan out of a Gran Prix - impossible! Fukuoaka was the ‘unofficial’ marathon world champs back in the day, the Japanese have countless world class marathons, and always get the results.. Besides to ignore Asia is simply not thinking on a global level. The new proposal of London, New York, Boston, Chicago and Berlin Marathons are nice, but c’mon! Three American marathons and not one Asian race?So back to the round table; Joyce had won New York, London, Chicago, and Tokyo - which, in our opinion, was the Grand Slam of marathons. I mean leaving out Rotterdam and Amsterdam hardly seems far either - for a marathon without a big budget, and in a small city, Rotterdam has more than contributed to the world of marathoning.
We read on the NYRR, “Scotland in New York City
Celebrate Scotland by taking part in the Scotland Run 10K on Sunday, April 3, one of the many Tartan Week festivities in New York City. The Gutty Slippers, a pipe and drum band, will provide the entertainment, and all participants will be entered into a raffle drawing for a trip to Scotland.”
Shelter Island new race date, 21st of May- “help
increase our entries by avoiding a conflict with the womens' mini-marathon
in Central Park.” There’s a wise move - might actually get out there this year. And to the Queen of the Harriers party afterwards at her country mansion.
Huge rain in New York. Umbrella days - I was walking down 1st Avenue, back from Starbucks, and it was raining so hard that the traffic lights had conked out when I ’felt’ somebody following me, y’know that feeling that someone is ’right’ there. I look around and this lady is walking behind me using my umbrella to stay dry! April shower early? Let’s hope they pass asap.
We read, “Tucsonan Pam Reed took more than three days, but she ran 300 miles nonstop. She finished this afternoon at 1:57 - three minutes short of 80 hours. It was the failure of Karnazes to negotiate a sleepless 300-mile run that was a main catalyst for Reed's weekend run. Karnazes, who quit his run after 262 miles, told the Citizen he might have been able to do it if he ran a flat course like Reed. His course was partly in the hills of northern California.” Way to go Ms Pam Reed…. A win for the wimmin!

That Paula Radcliffe finished second behind Kenya's Isabella Ochichi in the New Orleans City Crescent Classic 10km was no big surprise considering the winning time!
The Kenyan's time was the fastest 10km time run by a woman in America and was just six seconds outside Radcliffe's world record. For Paula to be second, whilst in the last stage of her marathon training (Over four times the length of this race) is ‘so what’ normal! Congrats to both of them for firing like rockets! 30:27 & 30:45! Sammy Kipketer won the men’s in a super fast 27:47, holding off John Korir by two ticks. Local interest, of WTC - 13th Female Atalelech Ketema 34:53
Meanwhile over on an awesome isle off Manhattan, a big wow! What a facility - an IAAF standard (the only one with the current IAAF approval in N.A.) is the Icahn Stadium. Loads of faces out there including Gary M of SRS, Norbert (both NYC marathon winners) & Mike Frankfurt of the Armory fame, Bernie the Chairman, Winning the peoples’ race congrats to
James Thie 26 NYAC NY 15:07 & 1 Kate Irvin 26 CPTC NY 17:49... An outstanding performance -
Kathryn Martin 53 NY 18:15!!
Central Park TC won both team races.
The main race USA Champs: A parade of solo excellence! Deena Kastor 25:05 just missed the record by a scant 3-seconds! #2 Jen Rhines 25:54, and Amy Rudolph 26:02 ran superbly too.
The men’s race,
Jorge Torres 22:47 (passed 5k in the lead at 14:13) running with hardly a frown on the brow, before Abdi Abdirahman 22:56 & Anthony Famiglietti, the local in23:02
And congrats to the Urbanites out there too-
MACARI JERRY R KUGLER ANNE ZLOTCHEW DAVID MACARI CARA GOODWIN DAVIE MROMAN HENRY MCINTYRE KAREN KONRAD EVELYN PULTZ DAVID CHESLIK THOMAS.
I saw Shiney who had some exciting career news (remember him from the Fatties?) In fact it was day of Fatties with Sylvia in the USA 8k, and Carmen too! Still running fab at 45-yrs old - that's what the Fatties do to you!
Then as I was walking looking for bagels I bumped into Kathrine Switzer & Roger Robinson, thanks to Kathrine for getting me a coffee… speaking of Kathy‘s I met the ubergirl on the starting like, Martin of Northport… Anyway - we went down to watch track side and saw The Run Doc zipping about, and the Russian Rocket who is doing well, but not competing these days.
Then my friend Stephan from Soundwalk came and we went on the hunt, to Balthazars, to grab food for our road trip - I had two bread rolls, could not spy a starbucks, and then we set off to new Jersey in search of Tom Fleming - the legend, the only man to run a sub 2:20 marathon inside Central Park, and set a 20-mile, and a 30-km American record inside of the park….. “I attacked the hills“ He must of! Boy, what a job we had getting there! Too Europeans in a foreign state… five hundred U-turns later we found Tom… Did I tell you about the first time I met Tom? He heh, well needless to say he is one of my all-time fav runners for his tenacity and amazing running spirit - they broke the cast with tom - who else attacked every single race like it was his last….
meanwhile down in Dallas severe thunderstorms thwarted Paul Koech’s WR attempt at the 8k, as he was slowed to a 22:55 - as the guy has ran 26:46, and a 2:07:07 the other year, it would be interesting to see what he could have run on Randall’s Island! Olga Romanova, won the women's invitational in 26:30
I must say that since Easter Eggs have become a thing of the past I do not really celebrate Easter. Having no religion to fix up I drift as a good egg would from holiday to holiday, skipping the fasting parts of some religions, and enjoying the feasting parts of others.A mean can we blend? I could take a bit of Passover, perhaps called it leftover, and extend the holiday to Monday right? Leftover Monday, only celebrated three years in four.
The Challenge is on! What’s this claims to be? Yikes, hunted! And what is this hells bells? “With Tanser having signed up for this year's race at the royal estate, Reid is relishing a kilted showdown with his American counterpart…” I hope they are not expecting too much…. Here’s the audio. Well not only that but I have been invited to Scottish Party here in NY City too as an intro.
A more serious race: Xiamen Marathon
Men
1. Raymond Kipkoech (KEN) 2:09:49
2. Shimelis Mola (ETH) 2:10:51
3. Tekeste Kebede (ETH) 2:12:03
Women (all Chinese)
1. Zhou Chunxiu, 2:29:58
2. Sun Weiwei, 2:31:11
3. Zhang Shujing, 2:31:57
CNN reports, “New Icelandic citizen Bobby Fischer is volatile, uncompromising and defiantly eccentric. He should fit right in.” he he. The guy is a crackerjack in Rackerjack City.
And more oddities, or saddities: £196,000 WINDFALL FOR YORKSHIRE RIPPER! Peter Sutcliffe, a brutal rapist, has won almost £200,000 for losing an eye during an attack in Broadmoor - more than 20 TIMES the compensation paid to a women who survived the serial killer's assaults. This guy was caught about a mile and a whisper away from where I was living at the time.
Paul Kirui 60:40, beats the Bush man (Solomon Busendich) 60:42 in the Berlin 1/2m, And Chris Cheboiboch was third in 61:23 - Starbucks trained two of the top three - noty bad coaching methods huh? Joyce, the consistent trooper won the women’s in 69:49 in front of three Kenyan girls.
03/25

Deena & Carrie yesterday in their NY State of mind.Adam Goucher a late scratch from the 8km…. Jorge Torres, “My first road race of my career, not counting a race in the 7th grade… Wetmore is not a big believer in racing on the roads” Deena, “The first race of the year, and the training has been phenomenal.” Anthony Fam., “I’ve been doing all my training this winter in Central Park, I love the place.” Carrie Tollefson, “I’ve been used to racing for just four minutes… I’ve done a couple of 10k’s”. One thing is for sure - the road running scene in NYC is looking very bright, as is the XC, and track too. The Queen of the NYRR, Mary, spoke about great plans ahead for this city that are mind blowing, and will make it the Running Center of the World. So get out there tomorrow, and see what it is all about! Deena‘s goals for the summer - under 14:45, and 30:00 for the 10,000.
At the Store - “We’re bringing in bling bling articles to the store!” Said Chubby - buy some nike spikes and see what you can get! Glad to report both Chubby & Cara will be racing on Saturday. Not Anil though, “Too early… I probably won’t be back from my late date…” He said with eyes drifting.
Look ahead for another race:
“Mental Health Initiative raising money to fund research for mental health. We are hosting a timed 5K run/walk and kid's fun run at the New York Botanical Gardens, Bronx, NY on Sunday, April 24, 2005 between 9am and 11am.
“We would like to advertise on your website. I was wondering if we could be listed on your event calendar with the with the other races and include a link to our website Click.
Britain talkes more positive steps for the Olympic Bid: Plans for a state-of-art athletics complex in London have been unveiled.
The £16m Lee Valley Athletics Centre in Enfield will provide both indoor and outdoor facilities for elite athletes, schools and clubs in the region.
Sports Minister Richard Caborn added: "London has the chance to underline its position as one of the world's leading cities for sport if we win the 2012 bid.
"The construction of the Lee Valley Athletics Centre is another example of how seriously we want that."
Hey if anyone wants a pair of K2 skis with look bindings, for a 6-foot plus skier I am throwing mine out - free.
03/24
Free breakfast bags will be given out in the baggage area after the Randall's Island 5K. Another great reason to attend this marque event.
Today, get yourself up to 168th St and The Armory to partake, view, and revel in the Thursday Night Relays - the grand closing to the indoor season. Check the www.nyrr.org for details.
Lynn Jennings' 25:02 AR on the line for a $25k bonus, and we think Deena is on course to collect weather pending. The men’s race we give the odds to Jorge Torres. See it live out on randall’s island soon!
Give the public something to talk about: “Camilla Parker Bowles does not want the title of queen after Prince Charles becomes king, his office said Tuesday. “Charles and his bride-to-be, sensitive to strong public opinion against her ever being queen, had said she would take the title of Princess Consort if he becomes king. They are being married in a civil ceremony April 8.”
Begging the question what does Prince Phillip (husband of the current ruling monarch) do of importance? Britain, ah, Kings and Queens, and lost in the lost ages. “Immediately after their April 8 wedding, Parker Bowles will be called Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cornwall, and will not be called Princess of Wales — the title used by the late Princess Diana.” The saga, if only William Shakespeare was alive to record in on a mini disc… reality royals.
We read that Sir Roland’s Blog has outgrown itself - The blogger, Roland, was receiving so many hits per day, and the blog was turning into a “full-time job” - we hear that the webblog will continue in some form. Too bad, I was looking to use a photo of his from Central Park.
Tadesse - an individual first for Eritrea: “Many children have started running back home in Asmara inspired by his Olympic bronze,” says a coach with the Eritrean team. “He means so much to Eritrea.”
The April 3 event includes defending champions Brian Sell and Tatyana Chulakh, as well as Deena Kastor, Khalid Khannouchi, Abraham Chebii, Colette Liss, and Elva Dryer. The total field size is 22,500.
Reebok wisely snap up Weknesh Kidane, Egziabher Gebremariam, Abebe Dinkesse, and Workitu Ayanu. Great move, as Dinkassa (as we spell it, more of that refer to the archives) is the Biz.
On April 8 Haile geb will annouce if he is fit enough to run London, don’t keep your fingers crossed - Meb K has already withdrawn from London citing that he would not be in the desired form.
The track Night - Put it this way garbage cans, road signs, and street vendors were being blown across the Avenue on the way down! It was the worst weather - Freezing rain, sludge on the ground, sleet in the face, and a literal hurricane wind in the smacker. Hats off to the guys that made it down, real commitment, and very commendable - The Commander Kevin, Kwasi, David G, David P, Tom, Kurt Le Vert, Anil, Ali, Luiz, Chuckychina, and a visit by Reza Baluchi. I could hardly even look up to see the group coming to call out the splits. The five mile cycle back home was atrocious - it reminded of the days when I was doing dispatch rides on motorcycles, and with weather like this we have to ride two up to stop the motorcycles being blown from lane to lane on the highway… and then there was Iceland, yep - bad weather.
Urban from London’s scoop, “You possibly know this. Training partner of Augustine Choge is
Moses Masai. How comes he can have run already two marathons
of age 16/17? He ran 2:14/2:12 and a low 27 10k. Is there something
dodgy with the birth certificate? Hard to understand, why push
someone so young already up the marathon who has hardly
yet exploited shorter distances? Gebre ran 2:47 aged 17, those
guys are already at world class level at that age.” We do think so yes, after seeing some things operate in Kenya first hand.

Flashback - The Wedding of 2004

Cara & The Chubby Boss.
Red box, hit the First link in the box "Compilaties TV beelden" - WK to see Bekele in the 12k (his second race), storm away. Great footage.
Kenya's bid to host the 2007 IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Mombasa is on course.
IAAF President Lamine Diack told a news conference on Friday that Kenya's only competitor is the USA, who has not designated any city. It is only fair that the country that has so dominated the world scene for so long is given the championships. In the old days the team who won would be invited to host the champs, but that faded out as Africa started to dominate in the 80’s, first with Ethiopia, then Kenya for so long. One thing is for sure, if they have an ancillary XC peoples’ race it will be just as fast as the premier event! The good news for foreigners is that it will be held in Mombassa, at sea level.
Can the Simba’s 5k WR be challenged?? Ethiopia's double winner Tirunesh Dibaba is scheduled to race in Carlsbad on April 3, along with both of last year's winners, Isabella Ochichi of Kenya and Dejene Berhanu of Ethiopia.
Glad to see something is being done about this lunatic - LONDON (Reuters) - A former priest who jumped out of the crowd and knocked over the leader during last year's Olympic marathon has been ordered by a court to keep away from next month's London Marathon.
During the Athens race, Cornelius Horan, an Irish ex-priest dressed in a kilt and beret, grabbed Brazil's Vanderlei de Lima and pushed him into the crowd. De Lima, who had been in first place, ended up with a bronze medal.
We also read, “ Injury-prone Australian marathon runner Lee Troop will consider retirement if he fails to compete at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games.
Troop, 32, is sidelined again after a stress fracture in his lower back flared at the Lake Biwa Marathon a fortnight ago in Japan.
Speaking at the launch of the Great Ocean Road International Marathon, Troop said his latest injury and a torn leg muscle after the Athens Games had made him consider his future in the sport.
"Post-Athens hasn't been terribly kind to me," Troop said. (who has been running for 22 years and logging 160km training weeks since he was a teenager).
I ran back from Spring & Broadway yesterday, up to 90th St. Although it was at 5-pm I did not have to stop for lights/traffic at all - in fact the only hazards were the East Side women who stand on the street with pushchairs, cellphones, and yapping rats disguised as dogs, talking to clones of their selves blocking the entire sidewalk. At least the dogs are easy to hurdle.

Two Great Local Races this week -
First The Voice of the NYRR, Ian Brooks’ hosts the State famous Thursday Night at the Races Classic Relay’s Night. If you want to go and race and don’t have a team I strongly advise that you go up there and hang out as runners are always recruited! The standard goes from super fast to the local scene @ the outdoor races in the park - a wide range. Moreover this is a really fun event to watch. Highly recommended.Race II - Randall’s Island, the US Champs 8km, and the people 5km! Can’t wait, promises to be fab.
We hear that Anders 2:12 Szalkai ran a long run recently as preps for the Stockholm Marathon (largest ever edition coming up in June with 17,000-people). Anders ran 37-km! 23-miles, on a treadmill! We are hoping that Anders gets back into the form where he belongs and retains his King of Sweden title… still the last Swedish man to win that Marathon.
TGV up to his tricks again, “I ordered a Toyota Prius today to replace the Porsche. With the Range Rover doing about 11 MPG I had no choice if I wanted to be a good citizen. Since the Prius averages about 55-60 MPG - it will put the household average at a respectable 30-35 MPG. That's the breaks but I got to do my part. The salesman saw me pull up in the 911 and told me to get my head examined. However he did take the deposit without a moment's hesitation.” the mind boggles.
Ali & Gina are having another party! April 09th and you are all invited to celebrate both their birthdays (10th & 12th). After the hospitality we received on Saturday one would be a fool to turn this down. Open to all Urban runners & friends.
Captain Kurt Le Vert’s Brooklyn Half Team Report for Urban
“Well, after an uneventful drive down and a quick search for parking I
found my way down to the check in at the base of Ocean Parkway -
picking up a nice shirt this time (I always like the simple ones)
Anyway Lots of Wed night track Harriers around we wind our way up to
the boardwalk and stand around for the gun - or horn... well no one
outside of basically hears it at all and we were standing right next to a speaker! All of a sudden people looked around and everyone was
moving along the board walk ... “Lots of grumblings around that but
once things get going they move along nicely. Nicely as it can be I
guess along the board walk - the multiple dead spots and loose board
that would bounce or catch someone’s toe notwithstanding - saw at least
two or three folks go down hard from these...
I start to work my way
up through the pack only to see Tough as Nails, Queen of the Harriers
in the race with her three broken ribs! The turnaround comes up an
there goes Toby with the Chubby boss in the pack directly behind
him... many cheers from the crowd...
“A pack of Harriers including
Chucky China is next then me looping back cause the group to go
through part of the boardwalk that has sand on it but its not too bad.
into a second mile that most people I spoke to thought was long (had
a discrepancy of about 20 sec on my watch) Anyway we cruise on down
the boardwalk back to Ocean Parkway and are wind up going right into
the teeth of a stiff breeze for the next 6 or 7 miles - I held to my
pace for most of this winding my way up through the pack past an older
gentleman that moaned and groant - uh uh uh uh with ever step but did
not slow and was still able to talk to the ladies - so I did not fear
for him.
“Finally a break from the wind and what do we get Hills in
Prospect Park - the early ones although long were not too bad - at
this point running into the wind for so long and missing some water
took it out of me but I gamely tried to push on looking for any team
shirts to pass - oh there’s a Flyer - Got him! - The last little bit
was a sort of tease looking around well look we should be done with
the hill then that little left and a nasty little rise right before the finish - but the sun shone and it felt good - all considering a
good race...
Did run into David at the end of the race and I believe
that her ran a PR or at least better than he says he usually runs the
Half... so it meant that we had all top 5 runners in the top 10% of
the field... Way to go UA! with an unofficial count it looks like the
team is still in the hunt.” Thanks Kurt!
Brescia Marathon:
Men
1 Richard Mayo (Kenya) 2:11:47
2 Hosea Kimutai Kiptanui (Kenya) 2:12:36
3 Clement Kipbor (Kenya) 2:14:21
Women
1 Nigatu Etaferahu (Ethiopia) 2:47:04
2 Katalin Farkas (Hungary) 2:55:17
3 Simonetta Magnani (Italy) 2:57:20 - The city where Doc Rosa is based. In fact Okayo ran 25k of this race as preps for London, she would have gone longer but the winds were too strong.
Another great Interview on RW yesterday with Peter Gambo’ asking the Q’s to The Pope, and this is one quote I liked, “You get imbued with this culture, and it's infectious. I became part of it. My love was devoted here (to the NYRR). It was my family. It still is, of course.”
Glad to read that Wada says it will appeal against the acquittal of Greek sprinters Kenteris and Thanou if the IAAF do not. And we are sure the IAAF will. (world anti doping).
WTC’s Kassahun Kabiso ran alone from the first mile in winning the 28th running of the New Bedford Half-Marathon Sunday with a time of 1:06:45. “If I had some competition, I think I could have run a 1:04," said Kabiso. "But there was no one. I was all alone. The higher the competition is, the lower the time is. But I am happy." Our cover girl and WTC’s Alemtsehay Misganaw made it an Ethiopian sweep as she won the women's race in 1:18:48, a day after her victory in the St. Patrick's Day 10k in Holyoke.

“My being here will give a lot of spirit to my team, and by working together we can achieve a good result as a team.” (the day before)After the first race - Bekele of Ethiopia had won again, and yes he did help the team take Gold, Kenya second, Qatar bronze - Spain, in 9th, were the first non Africans to complete a team score. Abraham Chebii, Isaac Songok took second and third overall for Kenya. A tremendous 12th place by the USA’s Jorge Torres of Colorado.
Our man on the spot - Urban Satellite, “KENENISA WOW! A very fast course in my view, sprint start, Kenenisa in
top group, very strong Quatarians including Shaheen, After 6 mins
Shaheen sprinted for about 200 meters to raise a gap, Kenenisa kept
cool, cruising on, looking very strong, passed Shaheen again who
seemed finish, Abraham Chebi came towards the end, but Kenenisa could
hold the gap and won easily. What a champ! All this talk etc, his
running is on another level!” Thanks.
Women’s Long - Dibaba did indeed win (2 for 2 on the predictions so far), with Wernesh Kidane also of Ethiopia in second. Alice Timbili in third for Kenya. (After a Kenyan protest Alice moved up to second, then back to third, and today back to Second….), Benita Johnson, the defending champ was shut out of the top five, and slotted in seventh just behind Catherine Kirui, sister to Ismael and the late Richard Chelimo.
Ethiopia, Kenya, Portugal was the team order… and a fine run, 13th, but Colleeen DeReuck of the USA.
Although Ethiopian Bati Gelete Burika won the Junior Women’s it was not enough to hold off Team Kenya, who took their first team gold. No other nation had anyone in the top ten making Lindsey Scherf of WTC, 18th place absolutely fabulous!
Junior men’s race - Kenya swept the top five with 1st Augustine Kiprono Choge. Tariku Bekele, in 6th, as the first non Kenyan - the brother of Kenenista. Kenya, Ethiopia, and Qatar for team medals. Galen Rupp of the USA in 20th was the first non-African (not counting Quataris).
The main 12k men’s race - Bekele again, completing his quadruple double(!) I thought he’d falter in this one to Dinkasa, but the Ethiopian who has been supreme on his home turf could only finish 4th, Funnily enough the Team went as this - Ethiopia, Kenya, and Qatar - but if the two Qatar scorers in the top eight had NOT switched citizenship a couple of years ago then Kenya would have won the Team Gold.. Posing the question, Did Kenya really win? Both Hassan, 3rd, and Shaheen 8th, are full-blooded Kenyans who continue to train in Iten, Kenya - yet score for Qatar.
Regardless Ethiopia took the coveted medal, and the Amazing Dibaba also doubled to win the Women’s short, with Werknesh also doubling her silver from Saturday’s long! Ethiopian’s won Team gold in front of Kenya by one single point as Kenya’s LAST scorer was in 7th place, 18-points to 19-points. Way back in third with 67 (accumulation of 4 finishing positions) came a surprise bronze and a fine result by the USA women.
So Ethiopia again ousted the Kenyans convincingly for Team & Individual medals. The only bright part for the Kenyan team was the team whitewash in the Junior race of positions one through five.
Our man’s report - “Just seen the race. Very hot day, first 10 minutes big group maybe 26
runners, including Motti and Ritz, Bekele and Kipchoge driving the
pace. Jogging for them. After 15 minutes Ritz drops back and soon
Motti, too. Heat takes it's toll I guess. Bunch of 15 cruising around,
after 20 minutes group gets smaller and smaller. Then, the Bekele show
starts! Kipchoge driving the pace and it's now him and Kipchoge, 30
seconds later Bekele gets serious and surged away, raising a huge gap,
nobody can go with him, exhibition race by Bekele, waving to the
crowds on last lap, blowing kisses to the crowd. Even more impressive
win than in the short race, senational! Lebed was moving good towards
the end. Mo Farrah strong finish after 100th in the first lap he
worked through the field. Ritz ended up in the sixties. What would
have happened if Bekele would have seriously trained for this event?
“Women short a bit of a carbon copy of yesterday's race. Possibly most
impressive win by Augustine Choge, one of brother Colm O'Colm's
runner.” Thanks Urban!
Balmoral Road race web site - looks very beautiful there. Last year Craig Mottram won the race there - he ran 12:55 for the 5000m later on in the summer!
Races closer to home - Coming this Thursday at the Armory - A night of Relay’s. Expect some very fast teams from Columbia, to local teams, to fun teams formed on the night. This event is a Hoot, so get up there and find out yourself - details on the NYRR.org
Greek sprinters Costas Kenteris and Katerina Thanou have been cleared of key charges connected with their missing three doping tests including one on the eve of last year's Athens Olympics, the Greek Athletics Federation announced on Friday. And a classy response from the IAAF, "We note the decision of the Greek authorities with interest," said International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) spokesman Nick Davies. "Our doping review board will now consider the English version of the decision." Rather like the Turks ‘clearing‘ their own last week…

Congrats to all.
I went to hear Dick Traum, founder of the Achilles Track Club, give a talk on Saturday - very interesting and entertaining. Some amazing stories, and rumors he has another book coming out in a couple of years.
Ali & Gina’s party on Saturday night was a blast. What a feast; a whole Yemen Lamb, 20-lbs of Salmon, Pumpkin Pie, ice cream…. A banquet - Nice to chat up with every one away from the park.

A letter from Flyin’ Fiona, “I support any entity that combats steroid abuse in sports, and I also support all the non-cheating athletes themselves -- recreational, amateur and professional -- who DO raise the quality and expectations of international competition and basic human health. Of the reports regarding the investigations of steroid-juiced pros, what I find confounding lacking is a vigorous inquiry into the issue of NON-professional athletes using steroids or “legal supplements” to improve their performances.
“ I might sound naive, but isn’t the purpose of competition to excel via one’s own training, one's own effort? How can steroid users feel anything but shame, when all is said and done, that their “accomplishments” were by way of cheating? I’m dismayed to see athletes of any kind turn to supplements and drugs touted by nutritional companies, to get an edge on their competitors. One popular magazine, Runner’s World, a highly respected sports journal for runners of all levels, has been publishing ads, such as the one in the March issue, p. 125, that push a new and fortifying supplement. The stuff is “...scientifically formulated to reduce fatigue... legal in every nation ... (allows you to) hone yourself into incredible shape, with-out [sic] having to juice up... gives your body the vitamins and minerals it needs to run faster on less oxygen. Add it to your regiment and you will see a huge difference in a few weeks.”
“The ad also quotes a user: “...Using it raised oxygen levels naturally, producing abnormally high levels of energy, virtually eliminating any signs of burnout.” What’s with the “abnormally high levels,” and why isn’t anyone onto this crap? (And what’s with the mention of juicing up, as if THAT were an acceptable practice?) Doctoring one’s body so that is can operate faster on less oxygen absolutely mimics the illegal practice of blood-doping, or artificially enhancing the blood’s ability to carry that oxygen.
“Blood-doping has rightly caused massive uproars – and, sadly and stupidly, deaths – in the professional cycling world, with runners, swimmers, and other endurance-sport pro athletes having been caught as well. Why do athletes tolerate this? That’s my question. Who among "the elite" are truly elite, and who are the sorry-assed, doping dopes? I see runners and triathletes all across the nation ingesting all sorts of crazy stuff ... and all I can manage, ethically, financially and I guess gastronomically is that which comes in the form of whole foods. And in the name of folk worldwide who defend clean athletic competition and who strenuously and publicly object to illegal assistance, I’d like to ask those who do cheat what in hell’s name is their point? Certainly it can’t be that they’re fine athletes or that they aspire to represent the inspiration and dignity of human striving.
“Resorting to over-sexed nutritional supplements ought to be much more of a stigma. It should be such a stigma that the athlete’s shame alone would ensure avoidance. But how does a wise society check the pervasive commercialization and frequent corruption of healthful recreation and competitive athletics? The question remains bizarrely difficult for the athletic and sports-law communities to answer.

Check out the Lornah *Simba* Interview today on Runner's world.
Big race this weekend - The World XC Champs, and Dinkesa & Dibaba are my two picks. Team Gold’s? Ethiopia will easily beat the Kenyans, and Qatar should be in the mix. Although Kenya have one strong 'golden' squad in the men's 4k. Tanzania will not be a force this year as two top runners have problems. Expect the Spanish, French, and Portugese teams to run well.
“From the cover of Runner's World magazine to a spread in Time and a scheduled appearance Wednesday night on "Late Show With David Letterman," ultramarathoning has probably never had such exposure.” Great times article forwarded by David P, thanks, on the Ultraman Karnazes. I am yet to get the Ultra bug. In every single one of the many marathons I have run over the last ten years I have been eternally thankful the race was not a mile longer!
I felt bad for all the people who had their cars towed from Madison Ave and down to Park Ave for the St. Pat’s parade yesterday - I mean the parade is on Fifth, so what is the need for no cars so far away?
Speaking of not far from 5th Ave I dropped by the store the other day to say hello to Chubby who had returned from his West Coast trip “And I got beaten in a road race by Leah Pells” and hear the latest scoop. Chubby & Cara were the only ones on the entire upper east side (and myself I might add) who were not dressed in green. Funny thing, earlier in the day as I was going along Lex there was a guy in a suit drunk who was definitely Irish, and he was yelling at all the greenies4-1day in a thick cork brogue, “F__k the Oirish!” to which the greenies did not have much of a reply to.
Condolences to Tanzania’s John Yuda and Janeth, for a sudden death in the family. John, a member of Team Timmax has had a tough last year.
Brighter news (Empire State looked cool all in green lights!) the track nite was actually super weather for once! Well for distance running… and low and behold welcome back all the ball players who mysteriously disappeared over the winter season.. Before we get to ‘who made’ it let’s have the excuses, Good - Broken ribs of the Queen of the Harriers, Commendable - Swimming classes for Jose, And…. “I’m being a daddy for the corgi’s” from Centuryman?? Cough cough… First off well done to The Cappuccino Club whop found Eric’s wallet on the track (and who is Erik? We don’t know but that is what the license said, and when I saw a likeness running back to the track with a frown, and yelled “Eric?” there was one very happy guy - how often do you lose a wallet in NYC and get it returned with the cash??) - Cristina who ran great, Welcome back Shawn after covering a trial that caused her to miss quite a few sessions (she ran like she’d never been away), Lissy who is defo back recovered from her fine race in Austin, DavidP who developed turbo legs on the last repeat, and the Dutchman (with his new ipod that weighs about 1-oz and looks like a cigarette lighter) who after moaning, “Hey, you told the first group to slow down,” joined the second group as a protest - go figure! The Commander was running a fine session, controlled until he got carried away and flew off, Kwasi, who knew all the rugby songs somehow, was zipping the straights and cruising the turns, David G & The Commander’s pal that grouped well, the Juiceman who pulled on the brakes and ran smooth the ‘whole’ session. Welcome back Anne who ‘also’ looked like she had never been away. Luiz who pulled through the session with sage speed… yep there was good form throughout tonight… must be that there is a spring in the air.

Happy Birthday to StuGlu - one of NYC’s best master runners.Seen on the Bridle Path, back from France, was Monsieur Mileage - talking about how fast they start races in France over the XC. S’true, I remember one of my first races at XC in Europe - the gun went off and in a nano-second I was 300-places behind everyone!
Also John Henwood, our reservoir Champ and the fastest 10,000m runner in NYC.
Tonight is track night down on 6th ST, and the club relays up at the Armory hosted by The Voice of the NYRR - Ian Brooks.
Sad to report - NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) -- Assailants armed with guns and swords shot and hacked to death 22 people, mainly women and children, from a rival clan in northeastern Kenya Tuesday, officials said. Youch, hope peace comes soon to that area.
After losing 5 years off my life expectancy I finally fall asleep at midnight only to be woken up by a phone call from London at 1:00 AM…. What is TGV up to now??
The Japanese set a Championship record in the marathon ANY country would love to emulate - and one reason is the early naming of the team - Here’s the WC 2005 Squad, and the SLOWEST of these five women has run 2:24!
Harumi Hiroyama Ryoko Eda Megumi Oshima Yumiko Hara Mari OzakiThe men are led by one of my favs - Toshinari Takaoka Tsuyoshi Ogata Michitaka Hosokawa Wataru Okutani Satotshi Irifune - all Sub 2:10 men.
After a long hiatus we hear from the Mr. Z, “Well, it's all over. I graduated from Mercy College's Paralegal certificate program yesterday. I took my final exam in Criminal Law and feel confident that I did really well.” Whatever next? We of course wish him all the best in his new vocation.
Over in Blighty - Australia's Olympic heroine Cathy Freeman has given her support to London's bid to host the 2012 Games.
Freeman, who won gold in the 400m at the Sydney Olympics, was in London for the start of The Queen's Baton tour for the next year's Commonwealth Games.
And Freeman expressed her views to London bid leader Lord Sebastian Coe when they met at Buckingham Palace.
"I want London to win the 2012 Olympics. I've already voiced my support to Lord Seb Coe," she said. And The BUPA Great North Run, the world’s biggest half-marathon, will be celebrating its 25th staging this year with the biggest field in its history.
A record total of 50,000 runners have received confirmation in recent days that they have a place in the race on September 18 following completion of the entry ballot. Shocking - 50,000!!
On an Olympic note - The International Olympic Committee's evaluation commission arrived in Moscow this past Sunday to begin its last inspection of a hosting city…
So you place potatoes in a large saucepan. Cover with water; bring to a boil. Cook 5 minutes. Add leek; cook an additional 2 minutes. Drain well. Combine potato mixture in a bowl with ½ a jug of guinness; toss well. Set aside. Yup, St. Patrick’s Day again.
Talking of which I was giving a NYRR lecture last night and we were talking about ‘mistakes’ made in the marathon, and I remembered my Banana diet - I ate nothing but bananas for three days before the race.. Well things went well for the first half of the race, but mistakes- hm, at least I agve myself room for improvement. I do actually still love bananas, they are a power food, lots of today‘s food gives you absolutely nothing nutrition wise as the runner needs- talking of nothing - what is this with ABC? Okay, shelf Desperate Housewife’s for the oscars but nothing is cheaper than this dumb advertising of ‘other’ shows by slotting in an Oprah flick, & putting in a Jake the fake show in the same time slot to try and entice me as a viewer - I am making it a priority to never watch any of those shows. And to boycott ABC as soon as Desperate.. He he, well it is losing its draw anyway.. I like to watch one show on a Sunday night at meal time, but I may be thumbing through the DVD’s pretty damn soon.

Lecture Tonight - At 76th St School - All you need to know on beginning to get ready to Run the ING-NYC Marathon! News on the www.nyrr.org, and it all gets going at 6:30-pm.... Before that I'll be out interviewing Nina Kuscsik, a running legend - a winner of both NYC & Boston.
Turkish athlete Sureyya Ayhan has had her two-year drugs ban imposed before the Athens Olympics cut to one year, her coach Yucel Kop reported on Monday.
The headline reads,
“Qatar ready to mix it with Ethiopia and Kenya – World Cross Country.” What it should read is ‘A team of Ex-pat Kenyans.’ How can this country take any credit when it has literally just opened a cheque book and offered blank passports?
We read from the NYRR, “NYRR HALF-MARATHON GRAND PRIX: BROOKLYN
Saturday, March 19, 2005, Coney Island, 8:00 a.m.
The NYRR Half-Marathon Grand Prix, a series of 13.1-mile races throughout the five boroughs, kicks off in Brooklyn on Saturday, March 19. Whether you're a New York City native or just visiting, training for the ING New York City Marathon or looking for a new challenge, the series can help you reach your goals and enjoy the journey. Complete four of the races and you’ll earn a commemorative patch; complete all five, you’ll receive a certificate, special gift, and public recognition of your achievement.”
Brooklyn may be difficult to get to, as far as the start, but the Half is a classic - a nice route, and flat for the most part too. The last time I ran it, 2001, we had to do two loops of Prospect Park, but I hear this year is just one loop!

Someone else who is preparing for London in the news today (see below) for the latest on PaulaMania. The pressure she must carry going into a race is absolutely amazing, it is a wonderment she copes so well. London’s calling, but first stop the USA.
Tipton's Matt Smith and Belgrave's Birhan Dagne 1:16:23.
retained their titles in Sunday's Adidas/Flora London Half Marathon at Silverstone.
Smith smashed the course record by 20 seconds at the warm-up event for next month's big race in the capital.
He clocked one hour, five minutes and 20 seconds at the grand prix motor-racing circuit.
Anyway - why are we mentioning this? It is because Silverstone is the site of my other world record. In my younger days I, along with 11-others, pushed an 8-ton truck 300-miles (or was it 500?) to this track ( a world record for a distance hand pushed according to the Guinness Book of Records), and then we set a ‘lap‘ record also at the track with the truck. As traditions go they opened the bar up with free drinks whenever a record is set there.. Glad to say I was not one of the people mixing half a pint of Guinness with ½-pint of Champagne, with brandy and cognac shots thrown in.
On the run; Wesley Ochoro asked police officers for directions. The police sent him further off-course…. Still Ochoro (1:01.35, PR)
, a 26-year-old Kenyan, managed tro navigate himself back en route and win the Valley of the Sun half-marathon Sunday in Mesa. Ochoro ran a 1:04.54 (“despite venturing off course for a half-mile“). Tamra Lave, 36, of San Diego, won the women's half-marathon in 1:18.37.
Javier Espejel, 33, of Pachuca, Mexico, won the marathon in 2:49.00. Lisa Javernick, 31 of Loveland, Colo., won the women's marathon in 3:06.16.
Seen in CP yesterday strolling with the new nipper was Zoomalong Gordon Bakoulis.
Gordon will be at the
New York Road Runners Party along with Deena Kastor, Larry Rawson, Kate and Laura O'Neill, Anthony Famiglietti, and Marcus O'Sullivan, to enjoy the wine n’ cheese reception, silent auction to benefit the New York Road Runners Foundation, sit-down dinner, awards ceremony, and dancing until midnight.
A few days before that _ a huge boon for the Crescent City Classic in New Orleans - Paula will race the 10k on the 26th, the day before everyone eats Easter Eggs right? We predicted something to be cracked - Isabella Ochichi of Kenya, course record of 31min 23sec.

Deena in NYC - our tip for the winner of the first ever US Championship race on Randall’s Island. What an athlete, Olympic medal, world XC Championships hardware, and The American Record.
Spring Track Training is back April 06th - email for details.
The remainder of the NYRR Scoring races. Word on the street is that CPTC ‘crushed Orange’ (literally in the last points’ race although the guys ran really well - including a stunner from the Rube) is going after Bob Glover’s Screamin’ Yellows on Sunday…. Here’s a full list of the teams. Of course we know that if WTC make a concerted effort they will sweep the boards, but at the moment it looks like the usual WS Vs WSX with The Running Company mixed in.

As far as the women’s team race MCNY made an excellent start followed by the ever strong WS women (last year’s champs), GNY Screamin’ had a solid start to the year, and if the Crushed Orange get their women into place this could be a season royale!
An Urban goal is to get a scoring team in each race! The Flyers are doing quite well actually too, especially the women - I am hoping they will get stronger & stronger as the season progresses.
Saw on RW, “Ethiopian Kenenisa Bekele who in the past four years has won $195,000 from World Cross”
Rumor has it that Costanza will appear at the Store in his Pajamas on Monday, “those Jackson togs were not fashion,” the best dressed Urbanite was heard to say… We bumped into OzPaul who explains his departure will begin a trip onto Wall St to get back into the financial market… Anil meanwhile is off to charm the Scandinavians in Stockholm and Stavanger next week, and Tri-Kathy is still riding her bike. We saw Adam too who is back on track April 06th when Spring Track starts up! The Commander came in on his way to Morristown 5km..(see more below) Checking out the Brooks n’ mizuno rockets. MIA - “he‘s being wined & dined by the Brooks reps in Seattle, doing some one-on-one basketball…” No doubt putting on the pounds too! He he.
We read on E-news, “Former Brazilian international and World Cup winner Romario is to join English non-league team Garforth Town, the club said on Friday. The 39-year-old forward, who plays for Vasco de Gama in Brazil, will join the side for the 2005-06 Northern Counties Eastern League (NCEL) competition.“The 1994 World Cup winner is the second high-profile Brazilian international coaxed to the club by owner Simon Clifford.
Last year the Teesside businessman also persuaded former Brazil captain Socrates to join the club, which is based in a former pit village near Leeds in Yorkshire.
Clifford, who names a number of Brazilian players among his friends, owns a string of soccer schools in the South American country.
Romario, who was sacked by Fluminense before joining Vasco in January, last played for Brazil in a World Cup qualifier away to Uruguay in 2001.
Garforth are top of the NCEL Division One table, having won 16 of their 24 matches this season.” What a shocker - this guy was the world’s best in the mid nineties! What a boon for the club!
Forwarded from Jose, so we don’t know who to credit -
“Sahara Runners Face Desert Heat, Sandstorms, Snakes (Update2) 2005-03-11 10:10 (New York) (Adds first finishers in today's stage in fourth paragraph.) By Ravi Ubha March 11 (Bloomberg) -- More than 130 runners today braced for sandstorms, desert heat and the risk of snake bites as they started a four-day race covering 120 kilometers (74.6 miles) in Tunisia's seventh annual Sahara Run. ``People tell me I'm crazy to be doing this, and I agree with them,'' Hans van Ee, a 44-year-old Dutch entrant, said in an interview before the start of the off-road race that's run over pebbles and sand. Van Ee, a data manager with Stichting Pensioenfonds PGGM, the retirement plan for Dutch social and health-care workers, persuaded his friend Martijn van Rijn to pay the 2,500-euro ($3,300) entry fee and join him in the endurance event. The two hope to raise 10,000 euros for charity. Italy's Alessandro Lambruschini and Germany's Jorge Balle were the first to complete today's 24-kilometer haul from Chenini to Garat Eddouiri, in 1 hour, 22 minutes and 54 seconds. Patrizia Guarneri, in a time of 1:55.55, was the first woman to cross the finish line.”Sounds tough! Lambruschini was the Euro Champion in the steeple, he has a sub 8:10 we think! Good for sprinting away from snakes!

Tirunesh Dibaba has already more than lived up to her name. "Tirunesh" means "I am good" in Amharic, and in her teenage years the diminutive Ethiopian has firmly established herself as one of the world's truly exceptional distance runners…. “ great article.

we read, “Trinidad-born teenager Kerron Clement has broken Michael Johnson's decade-old indoor world record for the 400m.
The 19-year-old was competing for the University of Florida at the National Collegiate Athletic Association indoor championships in Arkansas.
Clement, who is the world junior 400m hurdles champion, clocked a time of 44.57 seconds, as opposed to Johnson's time of 44.63 seconds.”
At the races - this weekend was the Colon Cancer Races in CP. Seen in action (supporting vocals & running), were the SC’s. Mary, Queen of the NYRR was running well in the 4-miler, and husband Derek was fine tuning his training for his Marathon in the half. Nice French Toast bagels at the finishing line, when we finally got there - 100m from the finish line a marshal with a red flag was directing me into the middle lane, I tried protesting but she was shouting so knowing it was wrong I moved into the center lane (reserved for the half that was to start in 30-minutes time) and later had to stop and climb - as I can’t jump a fence to save my life. Something new every race!Inthat latter race, Congrats to winner Rob Zand 35 NY 1:12:05, and the team champs West Side Runners
Congrats to Urbanites - MULIA ADAM DARCY DAVID MO GIAMPIETRO ALDERSON BOB.
And in the 4-miler congrats to race winners Alvaro Cruz & Catherine Stone. And to Urbanites - WILLIAMS SHAWN ZLOTCHEW DAVID MCINTYRE KAREN PULTZ DAVID CHESLIK THOMAS
Congrats to Kevin The Commander running well in the 5k in Morristown placing 7th in a top notch field.
And of course to Costanza - they had a test at the store - to see whom the customers gravitate towards - The Players were Costanza, OzPaul, and Anil, - “I even gave them my regulars as I chance to even the game….” Apparently, according to the Chubby Boss, it was a walk-over, or a run over.

Congrats to Peter Gambaccini, who was given an award by the Armory Track & Center in New York last week "In Recognition Of And Appreciation For Your Contribution To The Sport of Track & Field And Running." An outstanding writer who writes from the perspective of having run like the wind, and having the talent of placing words to make memorable reads - I always seek out his Brief Chats on RW.
"Running is important to me in many ways. It has enabled me to meet and get along with people from all walks of life. It has given me confidence, opportunities and challenges that have helped me grow as a person." Ashley Stephenson, age 11 “Ashley is one of five NYRR Foundation children selected to travel to Norway as a part of the NYRR Foundation/Norway Exchange Program. AND meet the King & Queen of Norway!
“Thanks to your support, NYRR Foundation kids enjoy meaningful experiences that transform their lives.
Join us at our next big event, the Youth Track & Field & Wellness Jamboree, on Saturday, March 19th, 2005 from 9 am to 3 pm at the Armory Track & Field Center. For information about this event and all NYRRF programs, please visit: http://www.nyrrf.org/ Congrats to the wonderful work the NYRR Foundation is doing bringing running to the kids of NYC who else wise would not have a running program in their school.
Can anyone guess what The heck Lornah is doing right here? And for a bonus predict her time for Rotterdam next month. Part three what is her world record for the 5k, and when she set the WR for the 20k what time was that? Hm, have to think of a worthy prize for all this.
Sad to hear Cristina and Jose misread the email last night and turned up for training in Central Park alone.
The women getting a 5-minute head start - great for viewing:
Top US names for the 15km Gate River Nat Champs - 2004 Olympians and former Gate River Run champions Colleen De Reuck (2004 Champion) and Jen Rhines (1998 Champion) headline the field. They will be joined by Elva Dryer (2004 Olympic Trials 10 km runner-up and 2002 USA 15 km runner-up), two-time Olympians Alan Culpepper (2004 Olympic Team Trials - Men's Marathon Champion) and Abdi Abdirahman (2004, 2003 and 2002 USA 15 km Championships runner-up) and Anthony Famiglietti (2001 World University Games Steeple Chase Cahmpion). The course is flat and fast too, like most races in Jax, a great city for running - home to Mr. Jerry the Flash Lawson for many years.
Reebok must be so happy they snapped up Kelly prior to the Olympics - Dame Kelly Holmes has announced plans to compete at all four televised meetings in the UK this summer.
Holmes will return to the outdoor track at the Norwich Union International in Glasgow on 5 June, and will also race in Manchester, London and Sheffield.
Her every move is a golden one, and rightly so, an 800/1500 double was undreamed of by any sporting outlet prior to the games - even British TV were touting Maria M to win the 800m.
Good news - Leppin sports drinks are to make a mark on the US market, starting with Soccer. The company that promote 100% drug free products (no caffeine either) are used by many of the top athletes in Europe - even those who are ‘sponsored’ by other companies. The products actually taste good and provide excellent nutritional fuel. I have been using the stuff since 1993 - the chocolate mambo recovery drink being my fav.
United Airlines are having a massive sale right now - check their website for deals of $35 and up.
Great China pictures from Sir Roland’s award winning site.

Running in Liberty State Park - it is a lot more windy over there than in Manhattan. Then down to Chinatown to meet the Soundwalk.com people - an interesting project in the pipeline that had me cycling round Central Park with a microphone the other day… uptown on 1st Ave dodging all the stupid vans pulling turns without a thought to looking in their wing mirror, and narrowly avoiding the people running across the avenue to try and catch a taxi…. Got home and the door key would not open the door….
Bent key as the lock is stiff… luckily the Super was home - I blame everything on the cold!
Kenya’s Felix Limo rose to the top of the Men’s Road Running – Marathon Event Ranking, watch this name in Rotterdam April 10th! Chasing Tergat’s record.

This Sunday, March 13th, The Nagoya Int’l Women’s Marathon with speedsters Yoko Shibui, and the 66-minute 1/2m star Masako Chiba.
Seconds get the second chance - John Hancock Financial Services today announced that 2004 runners-up Elfenesh Alemu of Ethiopia and Robert Cheboror of Kenya will return to the Boston Marathon on Monday, April 18, in an effort to dethrone defending champions Catherine Ndereba and Timothy Cherigat.
Paula Ponders - “ Running both the 10,000m and marathon at the World Championships in Helsinki in August.
The 31-year-old wants a first world track title but is cautious after crashing out of both events at the Olympics.
"I have not yet decided which event - the 10,000m or the marathon," she said.
"I don't know if I'll keep my options open as I did in Athens but I want to be able to make sure I qualify for both events so I can make that decision."
We thought TGV was happy with his wheels, but, “The 2005 Carrera S is the way to go. Custom exterior color, cocoa interior, heated seats, auto dim mirrors, carbon wheel, S rims. All the things I am missing on my plus a zippier engine. If I order it next month I can have it by July/August and then trade the 911 in. Sounds like a plan….” The mind boggles, we’ll see him for a sanity check next month at the Scotland Run.

Personally I do not think any of the above teams will be top five contenders for the team prizes, but good for the USA for sending full teams.
Lance Armstrong, record six-times winner of the Tour de France, believes Paris deserves to host the 2012 Olympics. "It's a complicated question. To be honest, I believe Paris deserves the Games," daily Le Parisien quoted Armstrong as saying on Wednesday. "Paris is a legend city on this planet. It's a little delicate for me to express an opinion.” Thanks Lance, we hear from New York… the Legendary City.
Other legends down on the track - The Commander was back leading the troops with a fine set of intervals in a tough session, and following in his footstep the Juice man Ali - tough as a rock. Welcome back also from a longer hiatus, to Luiz! Great sess too. David G stepping up the mileage ran well, and Anil too - Gossip from the Store - OzPaul has left for the Corp. world, and Tri-Kathy too. ChuckyChina looking more like himself, and Kwasi hopping in for the 400’s and not happy with the ice on the track. David P was Commander II and Colleen ran faster on each heat leaving a scant 1.5” on the last interval. Welcome back The Centuryman, back from an age it seems, and congrat to the Snowflake PR-ing Cindy who somehow managed to run each 800m with negative splits - tough to do on a receding rest - what a crew!
