National Running Day - Join us tonight [see above] for the scoop.
The legend, German Silva, runs for Shoe4Africa!
Nice email today, "As a regular reader of your blog, I just wanted to send you an email to say hi and thank you for continually providing such fascinating, inspiring content. I learned of your work after reading your stupendous More Fire book, which has helped my running reach new heights this year after 11 years of trying (lowered my half marathon PB in March to 1:17:02 after spinning on my wheels for a while).
"I was inspired to read More Fire after spending 10 days in Kapkitony in December 2009, and after seeing your recently published picture of William Kiplagat, I thought I would drop you a line to tell you my story about the time I spent there. It's summarised here from my blog that I kept while I was in Tanzania for six months:
http://tz-rider.blogspot.com/2009/12/eldoret-and-stuff.html **Thanks Ross, good stuff and read the 'rare indeed' story of how he won prize money in East Africa in a 5km! That is real bragging rights.
NYC moment, so I am cycling down 90th ST in NYC picking up pace, in the bike lane and a traffic cop [no less] cuts 45-degrees to the left in a starsky n hutch move right in front of me, as if I am a Colombian drugs runner. I somehow manage to stop in time, but have to come to a complete stop, so I look at him and say, "Don't say, you didn't see me??" He looks at me and says, "No I didn't because bicycles are supposed to be on the right hand side of the road." So I point down to the paint on the road RIGHT in front of us, "See that little man, painted in the bike lane? That? That is me, not you."
So he stares down as if he is eating space cakes, "Oh, sorry. But, hey be careful out there..." Me be careful?Bikes always get a tough rap, here we are saving the war on carbon poisoning and what do we get?
Later in the afternoon I was listening to the Rev Jesse Jackson, Marcus Garvey's son, Vanessa Williams, a scientist, some amazing gospel singers, and some other people talk... as it was Africa day no less. Did you know that? Jesse Jackson was saying that Harlem is the mecca of the diaspora of Africa.. that is something I did not know; I would have guessed Atlanta myself, or Paris... all this I did whilst eating two packets of cookies.Coaching the Flyers was fun, for me anyway, I had a nice patch of grass to stand on, and as stand rhymes with land on I suddenly remembered - kudos to the Adidas Gran Prix people who continue to make that meet the go-to track event on the East Coast - a fab triple jump line up with Phillip O from England against Christian O from Sweden...

I am off to the UN today, for something that I hope will be fun.. more news later. Later this week too I am on East African radio - talking about what? Well it is live, so it is my choice! Kool beans.
No thanks to Lowes. They keep on sending me mail for a garden. I wish. I live in a studio. I once used to have a garden in my last apartment. It was one foot wide by one foot long. Just grass like Wimbledon and I put East African flags in the grass. Somehow the grass died and I have never had a garden since. I have no idea how I got on Lowes gardening list but they are aggressively sending me mail almost every day.Well I have been playing catch up. I had a road trip. In fact it was an airplane trip to Indiana. I had a great time there, apart from the telling all the hotel staff that I did not want news about weather for the INDY 500, or learn about the Carb loading something, or free tickets to the warm up laps. I am not that interested in Indy car racing to be honest, or Nascar.
I was in Indiana to talk to the people about the kids hospital there, and joining together. I met an amazing chap called Dr. Jim Lemons & an a truly wonderful group of people -- all new to me, yet I had talked to Dr Lemons two years ago, plus I knew about Dr. Olive... I was not disappointed; a wonderful bunch, and the hospital seems like another step closer -- thank you to all who looked after me. It was an action packed stay!
Paula & Mo were back on the roads -- Mo still in great form, and Paula is loosening the legs
Track is back with vengeance and from now up till August World Champs there are great races - I was rooting for Janeth & Nancy in Rome 1500m and both did great... glad to see Edwin Soi winning in Hengelo... Team Kenya will be hard to beat this year at the worlds
Last night, back in NYC (food was great in Indiana) I was at Patsy's on the UWS at 74th, just off Columbus - very good pizza indeed, and had a nice Pieroni too. The salad was nice.. in fact that is the best pizza since 94th & second at the place I used to go a - long - time ago! Three thumbs up.

Welcome back the Legend! [link] Paula Radcliffe on Monday!
Sometimes you start to sing a song when you run, y'know, you get in the groove... I always used to hum a little song when I raced... well it seems this guy was singing 'I believe I can fly'

The good thing about yesterday's hospital meetings were conclusive answers; I know when and where I am moving, I like clarity, although sometimes things don't go exactly the way you plan... but with a dead lead, always comes a new one!And also moving forward I am off to Indiana today, not to watch the Indianapolis 500 or whatever it is called, but to talk to the hospital people out there... as I say, so much going on I can hardly keep my head on straight. Got two job offers today - look at me, employed?
Lunch today with Tony and a nice beer too - we went to the new Lobster place on 81st ST, is it called Lukes? A nice place - we were going for Thai at Land, but it looked pretty closed when we got there -- Luke's was great - fresh lobster sandwiches!

Personally I like this picture, it says volumes (not just because I took it). If you are not a runner you might not look at it the way I do. But if you know the story you can understand. This is a double world 5000m champion, also a junior world XC Champion. His name is Ismael Kirui and he has just completed 25-laps of a rock hard sun dried cinder track in a pair of paper thin track spikes, in just over 29-minutes. Despite, at the time of the photo, being the reigning champion he was show no respect and was badly beaten. He sat down in the in-field to... Summarize...
I got an email from the iconic Bart Yasso - looks like fun, come and join us next week!
Yesterday I went to Bar Italia on Madison at 67th, or was it 66th.. the restaurant that looks like a Marlboro packet. We heard Guiliani came in last week, walked to the back, sat down, got up and walked out. We were lucky the restaurant opened onto the street and we got a big table at the front. I started with the Brushetta which to be honest was not half as good as Girasoles. Everyone was having salads (we were five), so I bowed to table logic and had a salad too... hmm. The coffee was good, the biscotti too. Desserts - Valerie had ice cream which looked pretty ice creamish, I had a dish and to be honest I was not really too sure what I ordered, or what arrived, all I know it was twenty minutes later than the ice cream. No one else had a dessert. However as the conversation was great, and getting to meet new faces, it was certainly a fun lunch. We thought Liberace was still living as it appeared him and his mother had entered... this place has a distinct ring of old Italian fashion. But being no fashion buff myself I could not, would not comment, I just sat back, like everyone else, and gazed in wonder in as wardrobes wandered by...
Glad to read that Grete Waitz is being honored at the Mini this year, in a big way, and at the ADIDAS Gran Prix that same afternoon with the women's 1500m. Grete won the Mini five times, an honor shared with Tegla... in all honesty Lornah Kiplagat should be at the top with six -- one year she was barred from running as the Mini blocked foreign entrants in 2004 (a year Lornah would have undoubtedly won) and then there was the drug cheat Asmae Legzhoui (spck?) who robbed Lornah of a victory before Asmae tested positive for EPO and was banned....
I love it Lance Armstrong's USPS team used fedex & DHL to ship EPO & HGH to each other... what is wrong with USPS shipping boys?
I had a great morning yesterday; I went up to Harlem United - a fantastic team up in Harlem, in fact I should say down; they are actually six blocks away from where I live. I am hoping that they will partner with Shoe4Africa for our upcoming Women's race to Promote AIDS Awareness in Kenya.

Go and see this film while it is still showing at select theaters!I truly hope every single Kenyan, every African, will go and see this for its endearing message. People fought for a United Kenya, gave their lives... have we learned? Simply outstanding performances by Naomie Harris and Oliver Litondo who play the two inspiring role models in this film.
Oddly enough this was the first time ever in my life that I have gone to a movie theater, I went with Tony, and we were the only ones in the entire theater! Obviously Kenyan education is not a highlight in the USA but? Funny, we were at the bar opposite before, Vino, hurrying our beers to get there on time... it was cued for us!
Sad to read in the Kenyan press more of this "Where are the mentors?" concerning the Sammy W. case. Does anyone know what the KAWA is? Did anyone listen to Moses Kiptanui when he set up the well intentioned KAWA? Nope, it is a repeat story that is played over and over again --
05/23
I went to the Achilles Kids Workout on Saturday morning, very inspirational to say the least, run by one of the unsung hero's Karen Lewis. It was Glee day and all the kids were doing a fun work out mixed in with great games too. Another reason why Achilles International is one amazing charity.Remember please bring your kids along to the Hope & Possibility to run with the Achilles Kids -- free, and not only a free T shirt as well but also a free medal -- you get a medal/T shirt in the adults race too
No word as yet on Chubbs Macari's run at the Police 5km on the WSH. I was going to go down and run with him, but y'know, I never got there. Chubbs is indeed training for the Chicago Marathon this October. Apparently in some form of shape too.
Talking local news I missed Nancy Grapefruit Labiner of Urban Athletics and a great S4A supporter gave birth to a child recently - scanty info I know, but when you see a pregnant women then later see a FB pic of Nancy holding a baby you put two and two together.
Thanks to the Tri-Life group for doing a Shoedrive for me last night at a bar on 54th ST, very nice to run into some familiar faces down there. I was limited to the amount of shoes I could carry back as I arrived on my bicycle as I was coming from another meeting before hand - but I did manage to bring home 37-pairs which I'll box up and get over and give to young ladies. My personal record I think, to be carried on a bicycle whilst riding is nearly 80 -- but I was not so ambitious this time... now if only I had a company car...
[Link] to a story about Sammy Wanjiru from his wife's point of view. Poor woman has been dragged through the coals this past week.

The one contains the many, and the many contain the self.
Y'know what, I am super glad that I did not have to walk 5km every morning to a school like this one, no books, no electric, bare shelter... and grumpy teachers
As our marathon team starts to grow yesterday morning, in a small reprise from the rains, Tony & I went for a run with Kelly & her team, then to E.A.T. n Madison Ave afterwards. We're on the run, with a great team!
Also working on AD's coming out in the Wall St journal. The muse of advertising, for me, is Kenneth Cole.
Brooklyn Half Marathon this Saturday. I missed the deadline for this one, race got full before I had time to enter. An interesting race for me; one year I won it, one year I came nearly dead last, one year I got to Brooklyn (setting off from the Upper East Side) on the morning of the race, and somehow (this is true) the delivery truck (taking me to the race) ended up in Tuckahoe, and at the time of the start I was sat in a cafe called Bentley's, just by the train station... probably a good job I am not going!
05/19
[link]A dummy article, Abel Kirui 'given chance for Kenyan team in World Champ's as other big names step down. C'mon, he is the defending champion, he gets a wild card. Anyway, bad reporting aside the truth of the matter is nobody wants to run the World Champs; they want to run the majors and get appearance fees. Kirui for starters is already entered in Berlin! The stranglehold is the Olympics - AK can demand that you must run this race or you won't be on the shortlist, unless you are injured...
Rains in NYC continue to come down, unfortunately aiming for me. A wall of water, a wall, when I was out on my bike with 5 (could have been 50) miles to go, to get home. I had been having a meeting with F.I.T. (my only real day job that occurs for three months later in the year and it is literally a 'day' job as it is practice one night a week)... Anyway, I also met one of my athletes Casey & her Mum, and the Dean of the school; Eric. Then Kerri the AD and I went for lunch at Patsy's on 23rd - I had linguine Spagnoilia something, with cheesecake and not bad coffee... that was before the rains. In the evening I went down town for dinner with my good friend Shmuel, with Wams and Anat, to Kittichai on Thompson that is probably (like Carlsberg used to say) the best Thai food in the district.. Green Papaya salad served in a pineapple, Chilean sea bass with vegetables, tofu and more, and the Sea Bass was the best I have ever tasted in NYC, and we had a table full of desserts with some exquisite ice creams & flourless chocolate cake. Shmuel is moving into the film biz and backing a film with Christopher Walken that will be released next year...
Khalid Khannouchi called, he is town, just passed through, but will be back later this week; it'll be nice to catch up with him, and I got an Email from Douglas Wakiihuri who was running good in Canada-- another absolute legend of the sport!
05/18
The plot thickens with a man called Stephen...Anyway, other news - coaching last night with the Flyers; geez I had some good efforts out there, now people are getting used to the 60-minutes of speed *work* - we are moving.
More pouring rains, it is going to be all week, but not on Sunday I hear - good job because I am going to meet the Police on Sunday at an event.
Brooklyn half this Saturday-- amazing that this is a sell out event... I remember the days when...
PS: the film hint is go and see 'The First Grader' -- getting superb Euro reviews...
A sad fact? 9/10 mother's in Sub Saharan Africa will lose a child during their life. 90%

[update] the latest on the Sammy saga [link]
Amazing how many stories do not reach the media... I can think of some very prominent ones that have somehow escaped publication, talking about East African running here.how do the runners want to be portrayed, and what gain comes from printing stories, or telling the stories if they can seriously hurt, or harm someone.
The stories about Sammy continue to pour in; the sad thing is most people did see it coming, all the signs were there, from the five car crashes, from the trouble with a preacher, to the bar stories in the small agriculture high up town of Nyahururu where the likes of Joseph Kimani are still around to show signs of the road too-well lived.
It goes back earlier, to before the Olympics, before he was thrust into a flame of limelight by literally running the world off its feet... it all began, or so this story back in 2003, but now is not the time for telling.
Yesterday I drew the line between Sammy & Benson; not only for the way they lived (identical) but also for the way they could pull their bodies to immortality when they needed to perform. Sammy's last Marathon, Chicago, was probably the greatest ever run. Not because he refused to give up, faced a torrid attack from the then defending London Marathon Champion, a race he had dropped out of looking a tad over his normal racing weight, but for the fact that less than eight weeks before Chicago Sammy looked like a runner who was struggling to remain within sight of his training group. The stride was not there, the form was anywhere but there, and he breathed like a heavy horse.
I am convinced no runner in the world could have done what he did; his legs, body, flesh and skin were like the runners that raced by his side - but his mind burned with fire that no runner could match, and he did the unbelievable. I have never seen that in any other runner... since Benson Masya; both disappeared too young.
Rains, cold, and wind returned to NYC. I went for a run in CP with Tony before we went for breakfast at Quad. whatsitcalled on 73rd ST, just off Madison. A great little coffee shop, very Italian and along with the great coffee we had panini with egg and tomato. Healthy huh? A super interesting conversation with Jim Hancock about potentially a big hook up.
Also Tony had met Joshua Bell, the violin virtuoso the night before, I had heard him play at the Paul Newman memorial (just before Harry Connick), and we youtubed him, somehow this came up [for guitar players only] unbelievable talent!
In the evening I went for a run in the rain with Diederick, my Dutchie friend, was nice, the park was super empty but we did run by some friends including Alemtsehay, Monsieur Mileage, Jim et al.

Very Sad news - Sammy Wanjiru has died. The Olympic Champion who lead a life on the highest of hi-rollers died from the injuries of a fall. R.I.P. Sammy. Sammy Wanjiru shot to fame by running in a way few dared to, he lived the same way. He really only became a media star after the Olympic win in 2008 but his short career was already flying high before then; funny he reminds me so much of Benson Masya, so many sad similarities.
Leonard Komon proved he is the king of the roads conclusively on Saturday when he broke the Central Park record, and a truly world class field that included the only other man who could lay claim to coming close to Komon, a man from Western Kenyan. Micah Kogo, that challenger was a full twenty seconds behind, and in finishing second pretty much concluded that matter. The race was a virtual mile better than the Manchester 10km, held over in Britain, where Gebrselassie, in a rather Kenyan-less field, racked up his fourth win. Geb's 28:10, on a flat and faster course, would not have gotten him onto the podium on the rolling hills of Central Park. Good to see Helen Clitheroe of Britain, who train at Pieter & Lornah's camp this winter, winning the ladies race in 31:45
You do wonder about the field in Manchester...
Meanwhile, at Shoe4Africa, we are super happy to announce our new school books program, details on the Shoe4Africa web site, but to head this program, we are even more happy to get Sally Kipyego on board with us! Karibu Sally!
IN fact a lot going on with Shoe4Africa right now, all exciting stuff no less!
I think Sally is the fastest in the world at the 10,000 right now and over in China her countrywoman Vivian Cheruiyot ran a superb 14:31 to get the WL time for the 5000, a great new PR for Viola Kibiwott in 14:34!! Linet Masai also ran great 14:32.... the other distance race Brimin Kipruto lead Kenya to a top five sweep in the Steeple with 8:02!

A friend emailed to ask 'what is Joyce Chepchumba doing now?'
Here is Joyce last year, on her land, she was showing me the cows and the crops. Joyce loves to farm & garden. A big change from her old life of living in Germany and winning world class marathons like London, NYC, Chicago, Tokyo etc, Olympic medals blah blah...
I had lunch today at Candle 79 and this time I remembered what I ate. I had the avocado thing, like a salad, with it a Samuel Smith organic beer from England, which was good, and the dessert was the best part; a strawberry, rhubarb thing. I pulled it across close to me so nobody would try and steal a taste. I was there with Tony, did I mention he has got funding for the movie he is going to direct, and also former world supermodel Cameron Alborzian. Cameron is now doing Yoga and has moved away from the modelling world but he was super dooper famous in the 90's.I remember once when we were packing shoes up in the Bronx Cameron came (and pleased the women) and he brought his girlfriend (who was a spitting image of Angeline Jolie)...
Today was a great day for Shoe4Africa too as I got a grant, wooooweee! I was beginning to think charities like mine did not get grants. Funny enough, I might have mentioned this before, our biggest expense for 2009/2010? It was the 2.5% credit card commission taken when people make a donation. How superb is that eh? You look at almost any charity in the world and they will not be able to tell you something like that - PS, waiting for pics from School #2, I hear it is coming up fast!
As the evening was so nice had a run in Central Park with Et. Two loops of the upper bridle.. it was a zoo
05/12
I got an email from Tomster, "that was the wrong Rolls Royce pic you posted, you should have posted the other, referring to this one,

Ah the good old days huh, they don't cut cloth like they used to
What a city NY is. I was invited by my friend Marva to an event last night... sitting at my table Tonya Lewis Lee, author of child books, Melville a film producer from Harlem, Bryan Collier another author and illustrator, Kevin Convey, editor in chief at the Daily News, of course Marva who owns Hue-man, and a gentleman who was an opera singer, used to invite people to dinner, people kept on coming, so he decided to build a restaurant and now he has a few-- what a great table to sit at! Wonderful people, thank you all!
I was reading today about the richest people in Africa, somehow President Moi did not get on the list? Hm... that I can not believe. Most of the money in Africa, not surprisingly is in South Africa, although the richest man I believe was Nigerian.
Narly forwarded me a nice story - about her running success. She came to the Flyers a few years ago. I suggested if she wanted to make a break through in running that she go and stay at Pieter & Lornah's camp in Kenya. I think she was running around a 3:45... then boom, she ran 3:02 this Spring in Paris! [LINK]
I went down to the 6th ST track yesterday for the first time since ages, ages! Good to see it is still there. I love the community feel you get hanging out there - great to see people of all ages getting it down on the track.

Great weather finally in NYC! I ran in the park with Masami before zipping down to have lunch with the 3M - Mary, Max, & Michael at Brassiere on 53rd ST (way down town). AS I pulled up for prime parking by the closest lampost I remembered that I had been here before, I got that lampost deja vu.Prior to that I had popped into the NYRR building and had a natter there - there it was a 'who are you' Anyway back to lunch they have a chop menu where you get Onion Soup and the bowl is completely covered over the top in melted cheese giving one forethought to what your stomach will look like, then I had french fries & salmon (very good salmon), some small salad thing, then they have dainty desserts too, but I also got a proper slice of cheesecake, with a couple of Heinekens - an excellent lunch, most recommended, plus they have these booths that make it 'quiet' for a perfect mid town meet.
Also dining in there I met Ken, who I have known almost as long as I have lived in NYC, and then also when I was leaving Justine.. so it was a good catch up on friends lunch!
Then I went to the Achilles Office as 'race day June 26th' is approaching, hint hint please sign up, before heading up town, before going down again for coaching the NY Flyers. A loverly group as they say in Liverpool, I even did a bit of dog sitting for Olive the oversized poodle. Lloyd, the star of the group, brought me a loaf of bread and everyone ran round in circles for an hour.Just as I was finishing up I got a text message from my friend Dave, "I'm being honored tonight at the Plaza, where are you?" Dr. Dave Feldman is one amazing NYU kids doctor, amazing. So I leapt on my bike, cycled up town, and I live 'up' and jumped into a suit, then peddled all the way down to the Plaza, JUST as the speeches were about to begin! What a day! Now the plaza always has rolls royces outside, so here is a pic (As I did not take any on the night) of me in a Rolls, from a few years ago

Pic by Mike Kobal.

Is is the Healthy Kidney in Central Park this weekend, I believe two of the fastest Kenyans of all time are coming... and there is not a ripple in the press. Funny how a sport that is so popular to do can be so unpopular to place in the USA newspapers.
@ lunch yesterday, to one of the Upper West Side's best Sushi places, called Sushi by Gari. Highly recommended and I can hardly think of a better place for Sushi on the Upper sides of Manhattan. God knows what we ate as Tony did the ordering; he had some great news, funding coming through for his upcoming movie.
A few people forwarded me an article today, here is a quote, it is on Slate; Saundra Schimmelpfennig, whose organization, Good Intents, seeks to educate donors about nonprofits. "Any kind of a building is really easy to raise funding for, because it is something donors can wrap their minds around. They can see it. They can touch it. It is a one-time expense, not an ongoing or operational cost, which is harder to raise money for." I really do wonder what experience Ms Schimmelpfennig has in these matters. Really? Considering I fund raise for both I tend to strongly disagree - Save the Children, UNICEF, GATES, all the big funders, "We don't fund bricks and mortars..." Go to the charity bureau, 90% of foundations don't fund bricks and mortar. If you put a kid on a web site and say $200 will send little Joseph to school the chances are he'll be picked up. Well Ms. Schimmelpfennig please do and come and fund raise for me as it is "really easy" and a little note, how on earth can they "see it. touch it" when you are fund raising for it? A-ha,that kind of really easy!

Okay, I missed the Japan day run, I was running late to leave the door. I mean I live in a studio so I can hardly say it was hard to find the door, more that I have so many exciting things going on, working towards, that as soon as I sit down - bingo an hour has gone. I was updating the Shoe4Africa website at 7:00 am on Sunday morning, by the time I next looked at my watch it was 8:20 a.m. I would have ten minutes to get three miles to the starting line; not going to happen.
In fact a friend I was going to meet asked me, later that night when I was still working on projects "Do you have a life?" -- the answer to that one is no.
On Saturday, after attending a rather strange talk about Malcolm X on 137th ST I went to the Hue-man bookstore and met my friend Marva. Now Marva is truly a power lady of Harlem, and this bookstore is the hive of activity. Whenever I talk to Marva, and she tells me all the things people are doing, I come home & start to turbo work. Since I last saw her she has started a publishing house... how timely! I am working trying to get a friend of mine's works published and the backbone of Marva's PH is to publish works that give a voice to the outside voice. Marva told me to write a book too... "Even the story of your Kilimanjaro trip is a book." So now I have a publisher! In the running news I was so happy to see the continuing good fortune of my friend Lydia Cheromei who won the Prague Marathon - she owns the city having won the half there a month ago. Not only that she ran a PR and got the CR too - 2:22- and Benson Barus won the men's race in 2:07:07 a new PR for him. My fave Benson story happened in NYC, up in Harlem. We are running the Coogan's 5km... in fact why am I writing this story it makes me look bad. (slow). Better concentrate on other things - Talking to Mr. G the weatherman, I told him my ping pong game has improved. He politely lied that I beat him the last time we played.
Anyway, here is a nice picture of Lydia, who (twice) used to be my next door neighbor, once in Iten, once in Eldoret.

05/06
Cinco de Mayo passed in Little Korea. I was down on 32nd ST, invited by my buddy Leong and meeting Gigi & Heidi; Heidi is doing projects down in the Masai Mara with school girls, something of course close to my heart and very worthwhile doing.Funny thing I went down there with the vague intent, a Korean restaurant, so I forgot even to copy down the address. In fact before hand I had to drop something off for a friend at the Gym. She works there as a trainer, so I phoned the gym, "What time does she start her shift tonight?" And would you believe the guy who answers says, "I can't tell you that, it would be an invasion of her privacy..." OMG who has been day dreaming he is a Navy Seal, so I instead walked into the place... busting open that privacy..
Anyway, so the mind was preoccupied, I got down to 32nd ST and lo and behold every single shop is a Korean restaurant!
Anyway, luckily I found it, don't ask me what I ate, then after we went to a dessert place when I had banana ice cream crepes and Honey bubble something green warm soup tea & various other items of Sugar!
Sent out our first email newsletter today -- if you are on th email list, or have made a donation so Shoe4Africa then you are on it; hope that is ok!
05/05
From dawn to dusk working yesterday - I am boz-eyed as I was sitting in front of the computer. I was JUST about to go out for dinner when my friend Stacey sent me a program for making a newsletter... watch out Shoe4Africa's first newsletter is coming! Further more I have been making tons of little edits updates on the web site, cropping pics, scanning, writing, clipping, OMG... I did escape, in the rain, to go to the bank to deposit some checks - I was depositing them all in different accounts which quite baffled the teller, then I had one in sterling that she told me she could not accept, "Only in cash" and I said, nope, you can accept checks too... so that took a 15-minute fight too... kind've like a Dell computer -- you know when the tech is telling you how to mend it and you have been there and know he/she is not even sure what they are talking about? I guess it is called living too long.Well this bad weather might put serious skids on my idea of actually running a race this weekend. Having missed the last, urm, series of events I did think about shaking a leg... but if this weather continues I am not too sure.
The Shoe4Africa Marathon team continues to build up, I am thinking of starting a Thursday night tempo group for all of my charity runners, and of course friends, when we go out and run 7-9 miles at tempo - y'know they say Misery loves company!
Went to my gym with bagels, the lady at security asks, "How come you always bring bagels back when you go out for a run? You are the only one who goes out for a run and comes back with more calories than you left with..." Called multi-tasking.
Doha coming up... Viola Kibiwott & Eunice Sum in the 1500m!
05/04

Tom Cavanagh, from ED, in March, running for the best charity team I can think of - building a Kids Hospital, building Schools.. blah de blah, and filling up our spots!!
Great day yesterday; started with a run in the park with Masami, in beaut. Spring weather, then off to that Italian place just off Fifth Ave on 59th ST with Tony to go and meet Tommy Clark, Robert & Ethan Zohn, founders of Grassrootssoccer for breakfast coffee, then we cycled to MOMA and met Paul for lunch (moan groan small portions, my dessert question was, "Is there anything substantial on this menu?" but anyway the meeting was fantastic and Paul looks like he is going to be a great asset to Shoe4Africa in the future. Then off to the Achilles to do things for the Hope & Possibility event (all the time working myself from Harlem where I live to downtown), and ending up on 18th ST to see Dr Dave en crew -- things are coming together, and this was a plan the stage type meeting! Then I had the fastest cycle back up to Harlem, a change of clothes, back tot he park for coaching the Flyers - they were moaning as I made them do 5.7 miles of actual speed running (ie 5.7 miles of 300-meters at full speed as it was a standing rest). Hm, I thought 'ample' was the word of the night! So much so that I made everyone do a backwards run and push ups, for Irish Good luck. Nice to see Millrose & John's crew (what a nice club that is) up there, and also Zoomalong coaching the Moving Comfort Zippy team.... following which I went out to an Italian place on Columbus Ave, btwn 90-91st Streets to talk about how we are going to plan the marathon training project... that locale made me think of my friend Michele Cam...

A proclamation from the Mayor of New York for the race I direct each June... coming again soon! It is one of the most inspirational events you can imagine. Achilles H&P June 26th
Yesterday I went to the restaurant on 81st btwn 3rd & Lex beginning with A and highly recommended. Starters was a Beet & Pear salad, then ravioli with cheese & whatnots, and the chocolate dessert (second down on the list). Don't go for the top dessert called 'floating' something. Tony took the creme brulee which looked pretty good too... then after we went to the Shake Shack on 86th ST after going to Barnes & Nobles and looking for a book on Weasels - don't ask, my first time there, we had coffee things.
Great news, the Shoe4Africa site is back up again! Woowee... and our marathon team grows, day by day!
05/02

Moses Kiptanui, three times world champion, world record holder 3000m, 3000m ST, 5000m, first man under 8-mins for the steeplechase, John Ngugi, 5x world champion XC, Olympic Gold 5000m, and Matthew Birir, Olympic Gold Steeplechase @ one of my favorite Shoe4Africa events from a couple of years ago - a peace resolution event, "Run for Peace".
One Saturday I met up with the Achilles Track Club and went to lunch with a team of very inspiring individuals - a great Org, based in NYC, doing great things. You can support them simply by signing up and running the Achilles Hope & Possibility run, June 26th - cheap at $18!PS a couple of years ago at this event the Major of NYC made a proclamation making it Hope & Possibility day, I think I will take a pic of that proc. and post it tomorrow, if I remember, as that is rather cool of Mr. Mayor.

Congrats to the British Royal Family
Pouring in NYC yesterday - I was going to met my friend Sam to talk about Kenyan Charities -- she is also doing things over there, and is in the school business. When I was ten blocks away the heavens opened. I got soaked, but luckily just for two minutes. We met at the B&N Cafe on 17th ST, 3rd floor - a good place to meet.
On the way home I decided I really should go to the supermarket as the cupboards were bare. I bought five huge shopping bags full making the ride home interesting... avoiding the Harlem potholes and all!
Today's message - Internal Energy is the Essence of Life.

Thumbs up to the amazing acting of Liya Kebebe who plays Waris Dirie in Desert Flower. Wow, she can act!
A long time ago I used to collect running singlets, in fact I had quite the collection from Olympic champions and the such. One singlet I had was Moses Tanui's when he broke the hour record, the first ever man to do so, for the half marathon. A white Fila if I remember correctly. Now the reason I used to do this was I did not have many pictures to hang on the walls, and the art I liked happened to be Russian and quite expensive, so singlets seemed a good doable substitute and they always made for great conversation, "Oh yeah, the five time world cross country winner.."Anyway, I was training with Moses Tanui when he won the 1996 Boston Marathon. When he came back from winning we were sitting in his living room, taking a cup of tea, and he opened up his suitcase and poured out the possessions onto the floor. He asked me if I would like a souvenir, well his singlet was plain white and I had one from him already, so I picked up the medal, "Can I take this?" I said as a joke as I knew that the unicorn's eye for the winner is a real diamond, and very valuable of course. He said Yes... until I told him, 'Do you know this is a real diamond??"

The medal for the first runner at the Centennial Boston Marathon
Talking of stories I went to see my good friends George & Shay yesterday. First we watched the match Real Vs Barca (George is a big Barca fan), then we had dinner and a long chat, many stories - great stuff!
Marathon day - lottery, charity runners, ING are you in? We are now building the Shoe4Africa team. Already I have a few good people, thanks!
04/27

If you run 2:06 for the marathon you too can have a back garden like this! The man who coached Robert Cheruiyot (the younger) to his Boston Marathon win of 2010, in a time that everyone then thought was amazing... 2:05 on the roads of Boston - geez what a year can do! RC the younger, who used to live in Iten (links) moved out to this area to train and bam boom... but in the picture the man is non other than William Kiplagat.
Back to NYC and a big thank you to Cotton Lloyd of the NY Flyers who brought me a loaf of bread to the workout; most considerate of him! Nice turn out tonight, maybe triple of what we had last week... I myself ran in the day time with Global, then we went for coffee & bagels on the UWS - Lenny's bagels on 98th ST. A place I highly recommended in a book I wrote - the essential guide to running the NYC Marathon. You may well ask what has bagels to do with the NYC Marathon? well truth be told I got bored writing the book and needed a diverse angle, so I slid over to food and started reviewing bagel stores and talking about bagels... great book though!
In the evening I went out to the Fitzpatrick Hotel, an Irish place on Lexington, between 57-56, and ate Fish n Chips and drank something that was not Guinness; very nice and good location too! Apparently the Irish Centrale in NYC so they say...
Today is lottery day in the NYC Marathon; if you did not get in... get in with S4A!

Here is an old picture from the scrap book...

Tegla Loroupe! One of the most famous of all time Kenyan runners, maybe the most famous female. If I walk in NYC with a Kenyan around marathon time people always stop and ask, "Is that Tegla, are you Tegla?" I remember the year that Joyce won, in 2003 I think, it got to the point that as soon as someone stopped us Joyce would say, "No, I am not Tegla," even before they opened their mouths.
Decent weather seems finally to have come to NYC, in the 60's at least, which is the supposed average for this time of the year.
On the 27th it is lottery day -- are you in the ING New York City Marathon? If you are not and you wish for an entry please do consider running for Shoe4Africa. That is why I was using the word scrapbook [link], I am compiling one for our team of runners.
Also coming up this week; the Royal Wedding, I have been invited to two official breakfasts, coincidentally, one on either side of the atlantic. I will try and make the Consul one on this side of the Ocean.

[link] The best story yet about Grete... written by George Hirsch.
I can't get the song out of my head, Too Late for Mama -- Brenda Fassie was the Biz, that is for sure. When Kenyan runners make money, they often build a complex that sells daily basics like a 7-11 in America and name it after their highlight event.
After his success at winning the World Steeplechase Gold in 1999, in Sevilla Spain, Christopher Koskei, brother to Shaheen, to Abraham Cherono, to Jonathan, to June, to the most famous steeplechase family in Kenya, built...

This weekend I was going to run a race, the 4-miler in Central Park. I missed last week's urm 4-miler as this one started an hour later... anyway, just as I was about to get my number (signed up online) I met the most inspirational Richard Bernstein. Full of enthusiasm and zest for life, superbly over qualified, an attorney, fought a lawsuit against a major football team to get handicap access to a major stadium, he has run 14-marathons, and also an Ironman... Plus he is blind. So he asked me to go for a run, so I thought why not. I can race another day...

One of the greatest singers, Brenda Fassie; listen to energy of this song {Link}. This was the song that Alicia Keys sung at the opening at the World Cup {link}. There is only one Brenda...and sadly she is gone too...
Sad news that earlier today the Kenyan runner, Peter Kiprotich Cherus of Volare Sports, died in a road accident close by Iten, on the Tambach road. Cherus was discovered by Starbucks at the High Altitude Training Centre and he developed into a fantastic pace maker -- he could hit kilometer splits to the very second. He was one of the pace makers when Gebrselassie set the world marathon record in 2007. He leaves behind Sheila, his wife, and three children (Brian, Eric and Marieke) ... and a village of sad faces. R.I.P.
"South African George Ntshiliza produced a late surge to break the foreign stranglehold on the 56km Two Oceans ultra-marathon in Cape Town on Saturday. The 31-year-old, who crossed the line in 3:08.31, became the first local athlete to win the race since 2003.
Russia's Olesya Nurgalieva led twin sister Elena to another one-two in the women's race to strengthen their grip on South African ultra-marathons" -- Comrades coming up next month.
04/22
He started running in 1979, by 1988 he was a legend in our time. Ben Johnson had just disgraced the sport of athletics... then a Kenyan runner, who was last in the previous year's world championships 5000 entered the Seoul Olympics and introduced the world to Kenya-fantastic running -- virtually in last place after two loops of a strung out field Ngugi swung wide and in about 100m passed everyone and continued to run the next lap at the speed of a 1500m runner... he made a huge gap, he pushed on, and against all odds, in a fashion that would cause a coach to jump off a building, he won Olympic Gold -- no runner since has ever won in such an emphatic fashion -- John Ngugi is a legend beyond. When I held my third peace race in the raging Rift Valley where all Kikuyus had had their homes burned and their lives threatened, where many had been slaughtered, including women and children, I asked John to come to this valley of hating and to be a peace ambassador, to march in front of a school of Kalenjin kids into a heavily guarded refugee camp where 20,000+ Kikuyus now lived in white canvas kids. Where the Kalenjin kids would meet the Kikuyu kids and run together -- John agreed to come, to march at the front for the Kikuyu people alongside Ben Jipcho, the only man to win three commonwealth games medals in the distance events, an Olympic medalist like John, who would represent the Kalenjin.
Dinner at the Union League Club last night; very nice. First course shrimp cocktail, second course salmon, and third course fruits inside a chocolate shell... Nice club.

The argument continues; the women's marathon world record. Apparently the IAAF are meeting to think about adding two records to the women's event - aided and not aided. The Telegraph in the UK writes about it [link] however the article is unfair to Paula in saying the race had two male pacemakers, which yes Paula had, BUT the race also provided male pacemakers for others in the race too, like Deena who ran an American record if I am not mistaken.A question could be what would Mary Keitany have run in Boston? 2:16?
On the other side of the scale -- I went for a run today, with the gym being closed this is a world record two days outside in the park. I ran 7-miles and it nearly killed me... I am trying to get fit for the Corporate Challenge, in June I believe.
Shoe4Africa Women's 5km (2400-meters altitude, hilly on dirt roads) - Dec 24th 2011. A $1,000 CR bonus to beat Helena Kirop -- here are the top ten times, virtually everyone on the list has ran for Kenya:

Nancy Langat -- An old picture; double gold commonwealth 2010.
The painting continues... now in yellow, I went from the windowsill to the bathroom ceiling, to the bathroom floor even... again kicking away things as I moved around the apartment, can in hand. I now have both blue and yellow paint on my body, clothes, and being. In fact when I was cooking I discovered somehow the yellow paint had gotten into the kitchen...very odd.Anyway the paint standard leaves something to be desired but it is an improvement!
I, again, got caught out as the infidel yesterday when I tried to enter my gym.. the guards looked at me 'Tusk, we are closed, don't you know it is passover!" A-ha, yes I try to pretend that I am not even going to the gym, just merely giving them a wave as I stand there in my gym clothes on Lexington Avenue. You would think I would know!
Did an interview with a South African radio station that was fun, "Talk as much as you want!" Ben told me... ha ha be careful on that one!

Grete Waitz sadly passes away today.
SO sad news, I have known Grete since I was 12-years old, and can only say she was one of God's chosen people. She touched everyone she met and set the bar so high that she'll never be replaced -- I remember at the start of her illness I had asked her to do a taped interview.... we had nowhere to go in a crowded hotel, so she tramped down to the cellars and sat for an hour; that was Grete. She would make sure that all your questions were completely answered, she was always the friendly face whenever you met her, and she always remained her true self.
My thoughts go out to Jack, her devoted husband, and family.
I am not really a sentimental person, I rarely save letters, cards or the like. I suppose mainly because I used to be that kind of person; I saved everything. If I kicked a stone twice I would put it in my pocket and save it. Then I started traveling, from country to country, to different continents... and that really cuts down on what you save. I have very few running memento's but funnily enough I have saved a card that was sent to me in 1989, I have it on my desk in NYC...
Wow - Boston. The predictions of the tailwind came true but still, 2:03:02?? Nearly 2:02? The mind boggler is now... how fast do you have to run to get in the men's Kenyan Olympic team 2012, and who fits the bill? In the last year five Kenyan men have run 2:04 clockings, or faster! Don't even include the name of defending world champion or Olympic champion... with 2:05:07 & 2:05:10 they are outside the pool. Who do you pick? And how much did the tailwind factor in? Was Emmanuel Mutai's time better in London than Geoffrey's in Boston? When you look at the results from tailwind-Boston-1994 then non of those guys ever ran faster, and many would doubt that any of the top few at Boston will ever run as fast again... Anyway it is a selection committee's dream to be in that position... kind of the reverse issue for the British selectors over at the London Marathon...
Finally a day when gloves were not needed in NYC - wowee, well I guess it is nearly May! I had a meeting in Midtown Manhattan, a most interesting one with a dynamic guy by the name of Paul.
PS: Back to Boston -- well done to Wams the Ugandan, and Don Favre of Price Waterhouse -- Don backed up his Sub3 at Berlin with yet another Sub3 at Beantown! Proving it was no fluke! Not bad for a partner at a busy firm, commuting in from NJ & 52yrs young - proud of you Don!
PS- Soon we are opening doors to run for Shoe4Africa in the Marathon -- please all sign up and raise billions!
Saw on 60-mins that the guy from 3-cups of tea is under the spotlight right now; not having a TV I missed the show.
04/18

I went to my friend's gym at the weekend, I was waiting for him to finish off talking to someone so I thought I would stretch, you know fit in. So I am standing there and the cleaning lady walks up to me, "Are you stuck?" -- did I look that bad? Probably.
The cold continues - geez, this is like living in the north pole, and I should know!
CenturyMan sent me an email - Chubbs Macari won in Central Park, in his division... we hear he's slimming down to attack Chicago in the fall... probably heard they serve Deep pan over there. I was planning on running that race in the park myself, but instead I went for a three mile jog with Et instead, who is off da crutches after three months.
At the supermarket -- I went to pick up something green (to match the other stuff in my cupboards?) and ended up buying 2 x 48oz of Edy's Ice cream. I hate those two for one offers.. one gone already as it would not fit in my freezer compartment - forgot I downscaled in freezer space.
Talking kitchens I painted mine yesterday, as it was an impromptu move (and I literally got a tin from under the sink and set about painting I ended up getting a fair bit amount on me & various other possessions that now look a tad blue...
Great article in the Guardian touting Gavin & Lauren's Kenya tours at Starbucks & Simba's camp!
Met SaladGirl at the supermarket, she is still there - so nice, she told me that tomatoes are the in thing for 2011... so there you go.

Martin Lel RETURNS!!
Emmanuel Mutai wins London in a new Course Record of 2:04:40, Martin Lel the Gazelle runs the comeback of the year in 2:05:45 out sprinting Patrick Makau, and Mary Keitany PR's by more than a mile (ten minutes) to run 2:19:19, Edna Kiplagat grabs third in 2:20:46 (huge pr), with "Shobucuvz" of Russia PR-ing in 2:20 for second - the only Non Kenyan to jump on the podium.
I texted Martin to wish him good luck and he replied, "Let's hope there is still More Fire!" Yes there is - 2012 is coming!

See how they do it!
Gebrselassie continues to impress in Vienna as he wins the Half in 60:16, as John Kiprotich wins the men's 2:08:30, from Kenya, with Fate Tola grabbing a 2:26:20 Ethiopian win....
04/15

The best of luck to World Half Marathon & former World XC Champion, Florence Kiplagat, making a debut at Boston on Monday!

Sharon Cherop (2:22), running at Boston on Monday also, and Edna Kiplagat, NYC Champ, running at London on Sunday! Good luck!

World Half Marathon former Champion - Go Mary Keitany in London!

Go Alice Timbilil in Boston! Amsterdam Marathon 2010 Champion, 2x Olympian & World Champs medalist!
The list goes on, and of course The Simba - running in London!!! All good luck!!
To all my friends running Boston & London this weekend, good luck! Even Vienna has a good race this weekend with Paul Kirui as the hot fave. Little known fact; Paul is a member of a dynasty family in Kenya. Not related to Abel Kirui who holds the course record at Vienna though and who will be running in London, Paul is the brother to 2x world champion Ismael Kirui, Olympic Silver medalist (though many consider gold) & former 10,000m world record holder Richard Chelimo, brother also to Willy Kirui commonwealth Games bronze medalist, and also brother to Catherine Kirui who represented Kenya many times internationally...
Gebrselassie will also be running in Vienna, did you know that Gebrselassie used to spell his name with an E as in Gebre, not sure when it got dropped... but that is another story - anyway G. is running the Half. There is a 4-miler in Central Park this Sunday, next Sunday too, another four miler... only difference is that next week starts at 9 instead of 8
@ Girasole today for lunch - tried the wholewheat pasta with broccoli & tomatoes - a kind of "way healthy" meal. The annoying thing was after four cups of coffee I did not even have a little caffeine buzz! Is the coffee getting weaker, or is it that I have just returned from Kenya - coffeeland.
PS: Sentimental wish for the women's Vienna race - Peninah Arusei wins, please! She was a HUGE help at the Shoe4Africa race on Dec 24th last year -- Go Peninah!

RUN FOR JAPAN [link]
Getting back into the groove of being in NYC... started off by going to the bank, looks like I have to go back tomorrow, all S4Africa stuff, in fact i have not even bothered to look at any personal business since I returned, then I went to the S4Africa post box to check on the mail, again I did not even go to my local post office to pick up my mail - story of my life, for the past two years. called running backwards. Had a great however with Dick Traum & my friend Ilan, at Blaggards... (5 W 38th ST -- good Irish in midtown, quiet too) I was coaching in the park in the morning too - Central Park seems rather small after the trails and roads of Iten. Anyway, that was the morning.
Our latest Shoe4Africa Ambassador, Nancy Jebet here with Claudio, a directore.

Olympic Champion Nancy Jebet Langat & her Mum.
Nancy has had a marvelous career, most recently she won the double Commonwealth Games Gold 2010, but her crowning moment was winning that 1500m medal in Beijing and stunning Kenya... she was virtually unbeaten last year, and she is trained by my friend Claudio Berardelli, one of the world's best coaches, and incredibly modest to boot.
Here's Nancy's resume:
1995 1st National Junior Cross Country Champion
1996 3rd World Junior Championships (800m)
1998 38th World Cross Country Championships (Short course)
1998 2nd World Junior Championships (800m)
1999 2nd African Junior Championships (1500m)
2000 1st World Junior Championships (800m)

2004 SF Olympic Games (1500m)
2005 8th World Cross Country Championships (Short course)
2005 heats World Championships (1500m)
2008 4th African Championships (1500m)

2010 1st Commonwealth Games 800m
2010 1st Commonwealth Games 1500m
Back to the USA. I came back with no luggage and boy did I freeze as it was raining and cold when I got back in a t shirt! Yikes - still winter?Freaky Deaky. I was at the airport and happened to email to Tania (Mo's wife) about something, I told her I had been unable to get a photo taken by a friend of ours (who has a talent at winning Monopoly games). I go down to the gate to check in and who is there... !! Stephane !! Wow. So I talk to Stephane for a while then he goes past security as a lady checks my boarding pass. Anyway I had seat 26k so I was nicely surprised when she returned and I had been upgraded!
On the plane, half way through the flight I walk back down the plane, push back the curtain and who is sitting in the first row in seat 26K.... Stephane!
Enough... so in NYC I decided to "do" the Flyers work out last night. Y'know the Barry White, sometimes the coach has to do what the coach says, just my luck the rain was falling like bricks of grit, lightning was flashing and thunder was slamming - 10-minutes hard up, jog down cat hill, immediately into 10-minutes fast up and fast down, and without any break repeat the whole thing for a 40-minutes total. I got beyond wet.
Kudos to Cotton Lloyd who brought me a loaf of bread; good job as I had no food in the cupboards... only coffee.
Talking Coffee Tomster (aka Centuryman) has a fave Starbucks blend of coffee called KENYA... he wonders if there is a NYC over in Kenya... nope, but very popular over there is ETHIOPIA... and Kahawa means coffee.
Of course this week end is London and the best wishes go out to both Michael Chambers, seen to the right running for Shoe4Africa, and Lornah Simba. And not forgetting Martin Lel, Abel Kirui, Edna Kiplagat & Mary Keitany... did you know that Kei tany translates as milk cow...London should be a cracker... more on Boston tomorrow (another great field) and also the Prime Minister of Kenya is coming to check out his steeds!
Moira davenport of the NY Flyers -- running for Shoe4Africa in Boston, thanks Moira!!! All the way - you rock!

Great weekend of dominance for Kenyan runners in the big marathons; Paris & Rotterdam was over run with Kenyan wins. Glad to see Benjamin Kiptoo taking a PR big margin win in Paris... Agnes from Iten was second in the women's 2:24 - I don't know the women's Kenyan winner, but a good second over in Rotterdam was Hilda "Airlines" Kibet also from Iten! Full results elsewhere... Now it is the turn of London & Boston, coming soon.
Yesterday I was talking to Nephat who is going to Harvard next year - congrats to him, and he is also going to be a great boost to the Harvard athletics team - he had just done 10 x 400 in 53" -- in Kericho town!
04/10
Paris & Rotterdam today - according to the Kenyans there will be no world record attempt made at Rotterdam, it is only race organizer speculation... that is the scoop from Kenya anyway.
04/08
Hot weather in Kenya, they are waiting for the rains here; much needed for the farmers.
In Eldoret I spied Helena Kirop today who was just coming back from training dressed in two tracksuits - someone not feeling the heat. The visit to Nancy's home yesterday was great, I met her mum, saw where she was born and photos from when she was first competing back in the early nineties; a good sign that patience pays. I also met her school teachers and the gym teacher who spotted her talent when she was in primary school and would take her running as he cycled along on the bike.
In Eldoret I had lunch at Claudio's and had a great chocolate dessert made by Becky who has been training here for a while with Janeth & Eunice; a good 800m team.
Speaking of which Alfred Yego dropped by; a man who took a medal at the 800m in the 07 & 09 World Champs & the Olympics to boot...More news for Kenya is the trials are now running in the Hague for the crimes of the clashes... it is being broadcast live on the radio.
04/07
All marathon talk in Iten, who is going where, and when. There will be a strong representation in all the majors from this area. Tomorrow I am going to Janeth Jepkosgei's and also to see Nancy Langat... two of Kenya's finest ever middle distance runners.Very busy with a multitude of things right now, but all good and positive.
The Dutch race director from the race where Komon set the world record in the 10k is here now, a nice guy, and small world he used to coach my friend Luc.
Hilda Kibet is running Rotterdam this weekend, hoping to improve on her 2:26 set when running in Frankfurt last year.. and speaking of which I saw Wilson Kipsang, the winner of that race, in his pick up today, a man who I believe may well be the next world marathon record holder.
Unfortunately I don't have a camera picture cable right now, hence no pics of Kenya...One thing about Iten is I really miss a good cup of coffee - I am missing Java in Nairobi & its Ethiopian blend.
,a href="http://www.iaaf.org/news/kind=103/newsid=59690.html">Nice article about the sport's emperor, Haile Gebrselassie, aiming for the Olympic Marathon in London.
04/06
Bows and Flows I was sitting in Nairobi and who did I meet? Lydia Cheromei! I flew up to Eldoret with her... how far she has come. Lydia first came to fame in the late 1980's when she placed third in the track world juniors, a couple of years later she won the world juniors XC. An immensely talented runner she then turned to the track and became the Kenyan junior 5000m record holder. She took some time out for the birth of her daughter, Faith, and of late has returned to running with great success. We hope to see her shine in the World Champs this Summer having recently ran 2:23 for second place at the Dubai Marathon.Lydia had just returned from running a 67-min half in Prague and setting a course record to boot.
Right now up in Iten where a host of International athletes are now still based - great to see old friends and in many ways it always feels like I am coming home. In fact when I landed at Eldoret airport the ground staff greeting the plane came up, "Welcome home Toby," so it must be. Meanwhile Pieter and Lornah continue to expand the camp and its surrounds; they have started building more apartments due to the fact that the camp is selling out now. So if you want to stay here - book early. Great to see it is athletes of ALL abilities who come and live together. I mentioned below the great Derartu Tulu has now made this her training camp after Asafalech's successes (winning Dubai etc). I was mentioning Wilson Kipketer has been here, and it appears that he has been in Kenya now for quite some time. I hear he is staying at Kenmosa (athletes' village almost) in the smaller of his two houses there (the other one is rented out). Funny tie in; Lydia Cheromei is the immediate neighbor & I stayed at Wilson's smaller house one winter about eight years ago....
PS: the weather here is perfect, not too hot, not cold, just perfect... I hope the snow is gone from NYC - what is happening to America??
04/05
Rains last night in Nairobi, lots of mud on the ground, like sticky molasses. All news in Kenya right now is focused on the post election violence. Six people are being tried for the crimes of 2007/8 - they leave for the Hague International Criminal Courts today I believe. There is virtual 24-hr coverage upon this right now.
77% of India worried about the Nuclear spill in Japan, how sad that the pro-nuclear power people won the fight, if only the right people had managed to ban nuclear power we would not be in this mess now...What a world.
Wilson Kipketer, the Danish runner who held the world 800m record for 18-years from the Nandi is at the High Altitude Training Centre right now... Tulu was there recently - the Ethiopian legend, a double Gold winner in the 10,000m, is training for one last championship; the Olympics in London. Unbelievably she debuted in the 1980's, won the Olympics in 1992 and the NYC marathon in 2009! Imagine... what a career even if she makes it to the Games!
04/04
Dejen Gebremeskel may have won Carlsbad in 13:11 but I was happy to see pace maker Haron Lagat hang on and finish 5th in 13:55, Aheza Kiros completed an Ethiopian double running 15:11... quite some way from Meseret Defar & Lornah Kiplagat's best times of 14:47 -- I say joint but in reality it should be Lornah's record -- Meseret ran 14:47.something in Carlsbad and they rounded it DOWN to 14:47, BUT Lornah ran 14:46.something in Holland and they correctly rounded it up to 14:47 -- who is the true holder of the world's best? Lornah of course!
talking Netherlands Micah Kogo set the pace to win the Brunssum fast 10k in 27:15... Kenyan men took all the podium places... no surprises there.
Kenyan running continued - Vivian Cheruiyot runs a comfortable qualifier at the 10,000m distance with a 31:07 in Spain, remember she has a wild card as the defending champion for the 5000. Are we to see a Dibaba-like Double? Vincent Rono, an unknown Kenyan, made a debut for the men's win with 27:52... meanwhile over in Berlin the junior world XC mens champion Geoffrey Kipsang won in 60:33 citing the "pace was slow" and Valentine Kipketer, 70:30 won the women's race - she is a mere 18-yrs old.
And over in Prague more Kenyans ran well - Lydia Cheromei clocked a course record 67:33 and Philemon Limo won by over a minute in 59:30.
The news over in Kenya is all about the trials in the Hague of the six accused men due to the issues from the post election violence. Kenya failed to act so the International criminal courts stepped in - the trials start next week.
Buy the SHOE4AFRICA nike running T-shirts at Urban Athletics - please ring 212.828.1906 to check sizes (mens & womens cuts). Mail order also available.
Hoping for peace - remember, women and children are the biggest casualty of war, a shocking 90% of all deaths will be women and children. PS: A message to President Obama, "One word... have you heard of Congo?" Millions, millions of people killed... and yet no action? So clear, so like President Clinton and Rwanda.
I love it India Vs Pakistan in Cricket world cup semis and One Billion people called in sick! Funny thought - I work for myself, I never have sick days.
Pat the Piper of the NY Flyers will be with 5 or 6 companion pipers on the start line of the Scotland Run - give him a shout out, he is a great guy and up in the Rift Valley they are currently studying using text books he donated!!
In Kenya -- the sun is shining, it is hot and the coffee is Ethiopian. I am sitting in Java Adams trying to get my plan of action around all the meetings I have coming up, stress, stress, stress - I need a secretary, or an assistant. That is for sure. Met with Pieter & Lornah, Lornah is running London Marathon on the 17th of this month.
BA- flights were great, a big thanks to Snapper & Carol who upgraded me so I could lie vertical flying over the Transatlantic - it makes a huge difference I can tell you.I ate like a pig on the plane, and in the airport lounge inbetween - I feel I have gone up 10-lbs. Went for a jog this morning along Ngong road. I am here for a few days only...

Just read ESQUIRE magazine April edition at the airport... hm, an article on Kilimanjaro by the writer Peter Martin... he was harping on how Rodney Cutler ran from Mombasa to the mountain before climbing up it... that should actually say ran some of the way, also Rodney drove some of the way -- quite bizarre, considering it was through Shoe4Africa everything happened for this trip, including Peter Martin, there was not a word of mention to the charity... not that I would expect it actually, all things considered! Anyway, I was glancing through the magazine because a few people had told me -- "Did he do it too?" The answer is no, he quit on day 2... but anyway that did catch my eye.You know when you are "asked" not to tell your side of the story, then someone goes and tells another side? So I guess I should not be writing this, but it annoys me that someone who yelled, screamed and swore at me like I have never heard before in my life then goes and rattles back...
Full story to come out.. that is for sure.
Dick Fosbury, of the Fosbury Flop, currently he is reading the book on Kenyan running... MORE FIRE -- get your copy and support the hospital. I am actually thinking that this year I will begin my next project, writing wise, and do a book I have been planning to do for quite some time. Anyway I want to write it with a certain person, so before I start talking about it I should check whether this certain person is up for the task. For a while I did want to do the Keith Richards' Diet book... y'know how people love the diet books!
Met Bill today, he was saying he wants to run the Scotland run in a kilt and was asking for others to run with him dressed in such attire -- I think Pat the Piper could be up for the task, but I have not seen him around for a while - well that is the latest race in Central Park, first race in April...On that note please go and sign up for the Achilles Hope & Possibility in June, on the 26th, on a Sunday and support a wonderful Org! Thanks

Brother Colm with the cake to congratulate David Rudisha for his world record, 800m -- Kenya's first ever 800m world record holder & his coach. Colm developed Rudisha from a decathlete into the best ever 800m runner.
The winter continues in NYC, again it was below freezing today. Obama was in NYC which meant traffic blocks and police men, some of whom seemed unable to speak and understand English. I saw an incident of a man at a closed off road simply ask the policeman for the quickest alternative route. "You gotta go back, down." to which, "to which avenue or cross street?" to which, "Dunna you understand English, you gotta go down." OMG... to which, to woo (written with poor grammar so my little critic can sigh as he reads this...)
Talking down I had lunch with Mary today at Otto, off fifth @ 8th ST. Nice place, amazing wine list not that I was drinking -- they have really good coffee too. I had a nice salad, then a pizza with mushrooms that was great, and then also a dessert with the word chocolate and guinness in. Nice Italian place apart from the cold air conditioner blowing when we all were frozen in the first place.
Speaking Italian I saw Sleepy Sylvia won in Sardinia a big cross country meet, Merga the new World champ won the men's race - good for sleepy, she outkicked Meseret's little sister.Nice to see Jon Cardenas
running for Shoe4Africa over in San Francisco... and speaking of which we are back on the New York Road Runners drop down list of clubs.. so when you enter a race - boom!
We fell off for a while, but are back on as of this week.
And on that note - last night at the NY Flyers work out my favorite hard working athlete Cotton Lloyd of course was the inspiration for the group - everyone else paled in comparison. We had a good workout except that I got cold.. the sun went down with the speed of hands at a charity auction...
So I am off to Kenya for a week to go and have a ton of good productive meetings etc etc... still around over the e-waves~~

RUN FOR JAPAN [link]-- run a mile, run a race, walk, jog or wheel... for Japan!
So no big surprises that Sammy Wanjiru pulled out of London, and if Martin Lel manages to get to the start line healthy then that will be awesome! I still believe he can capture the world record.
I was impressed too seeing the Boston field - they have done a great job in putting together a superb field. I might even get up to Boston as that is a great weekend... Strong Kenyan team--Alice Timbilil (2:25), Florence Kiplagat (world half marathon champion & marathon debut), Caroline Kilel (2:23), Salina Kosgei (2:23 former winner), & Sharon Cherop (2:22)... Russias Galina Bogomolova has the fastest time with 2:20:46
03/28
Martin Lel for London.... Sammy Wanjiru... out of London.... running scoop.
Tara Smith -- celebrity hairdresser running as our new ambassador in the streets of NYC.
I saw a film on Emile Zola yesterday, made in 1938, he lived fifty years before... and came out with the quote that has often been attributed to running... The artist is nothing without the gift, but the gift is nothing without work
Matthew Kisorio had a great race at the Milan half, just a few ticks over 60, coached by Claudio B., he continues to have an ace year.
I was at the races yesterday and after I went to the Boathouse Cafe with Shay, David, and George Hirsch, also Mike Frankfurt - Mike was having his first race in six months. George won his age group & David had a great race too.
Azalea Trail Run; won by Kenya's Richard Kandie -- 29:15, Janet Cherobon-Bawcom 33:22, from Kenya's Risper Gesabwa and NYC/Ethiopia's Alemtsehay Misganaw.

Save the children --Net Assets, End of Fiscal Year $152,556,000... Hearing that 1 in 6 kids die in Sub Saharan Africa before reaching the age of five... Hearing that 2 out of every three deaths are treatable or preventable... hearing that child mortality has risen 24% since 1990 in S.S. Africa... and the answer from Save the Children? "We don't fund bricks and mortar..."For a fraction of a fraction of their net assets they could do what Nick Kristoff advises... Access to healthcare is the key to improving the mortality rate.
If you don't build a school you can't teach the children... If you don't build a university you can't teach higher education... if you don't build the first public children's hospital where do the kids go?
Child mortality rates in East Africa has risen 24.7% since 1990, instead of being reduced by 2/3rds as was the hope of the Millennium Development Goals.
So Save the Children, what exactly is your game plan for the children of Sub Saharan Africa?
Sad read [link] about squandered millions with the charity Madonna is involved in. I feel sorry for Madonna who has invested a lot of money with the hope of good things happening. She is a victim of a group of opportunists. People often get the wrong idea and I see all this "Madonna- you" hate flying about. Do you really think she has a day to day involvement in the goings on? She is lending her hand and supporting financially; don't blame Madonna. It does really enforce my belief though that you have to have a real hands on approach, and a great financial team watching the spending, every dollar as it happens.
It is always a time of self reflect when you read something like this, when I read about staff buying one or two cars, expenses I am so proud that our biggest expense at Shoe4Africa is paypal fees (fees 2-3% of the payment to accept a credit card donation), not the cost of a flashy office (don't have one), company car (I use a bicycle)... etc...

Janeth Jepkosgei & Mo Farah at the last Shoe4Africa event.
Got cold in NYC, snow, hail etc... Wha? Tony sent a text, "On the beach in St. Barts..." Ah well the good news is it is nearly over for us, soon the long awaited Spring will be here.
Back to Island @ 93rd & Mad (Speaking of weather) with Century--started with a Beet Salad (great), then we had Sashimi, really good, with a side of Portobello mushrooms (super), then Salmon (too much glazing on the top) and thank goodness I stole Tomster's fries as I had no carbs on the plate (despite three servings of bread rolls), the salmon came with oily versions of brussel sprouts... a bit of a dip down, then the pumpkin cheesecake, with raspberries-- with Heinekens; all in all, super good. This place is a little neighborhood nighttime gem - 7.8/10
Ran on the treadmill today, of course who would not, and the lady next to meet was walking backwards on her treadmill. I had to twist my big headphones to block out her image - quite disconcerting, she looked a surety to fall, given that she must have been 102 years old.
Went to see my good friends George & Shay Hirsch who live close by me - always a joy, and I am looking forward to being in Sun Valley with them later this year... and right now I am looking to next week, when I go to K-E-N-Y-A!
Boston, Rotterdam, and London coming up...
A day in the NM life [life] of Paula Radcliffe

In Kenya the other year with Shaheen & Gerard Hartmann -- the brilliant physio.. Paula, Bono, 55-Olympians & counting... a great guy.
Lunch was with Global, bagels n coffee -- the lunch of Champions, he has just filmed a commercial. Check it out. [link]
I heard the scotland run is about to sell out... please sign up for the Achilles event, June 26th.
Updating More Fire... just with stats, it is amazing how much changes in a couple of years...

Out to lunch today at Orso with Tony, Tania, and Mo Farah! Great time but little risotto! OMgoodness - child portions? Thank goodness Cotton Lloyd gave me a loaf of bread! See Mo at the Pre meet, or in London in May~ I had to give Tania a medal for winning the long jump where she, fully clothed, outjumped Mo and I as we leapt into the swimming pool, also fully clothed! Mo was last, "Hey I win the real competitions that pay in cash!"
Then we went to the Clinton Foundation - Prez Bill was there, and we met with the Director of Foreign Policy... I took pictures of George Hirsch's house from the 14th floor... in the conference room there were loads of trinklets like in his office--
03/22
Snow this morning, wet rainy snow - winter is not over yet I think! Thank goodness the Half had great weather.
Great headline in Kenya's best newspaper, The Daily Nation: "Six gold medals three individual and three team titles are on the plane home after Kenya on Sunday dominated the proceedings in the 39th edition of the World Cross Country Championship here." Surely a case of Kenya Vs the rest of the world.
Vivian Cheruiyot; "I have won everything now, save for that elusive Olympic medal. Well that is a year from now and let me now focus on World Championship and that I can start worrying about it next year."-- Let's see, London 2012.
Who wins? Coe or Kipketer, over 4km.
03/21
Please... no more war... no more excuses - Rwanda genocide & what did the Clinton Admin do to help the 800,000 slaughtered? Zimbabwe so recent, Sudan @ Darfur genocide, Congo (continuing, millions) = all equaling zero actions on huge humanitarian issues... OIL Libya - boom. How many times, how many times... President Obama's Nobel Peace Prize is looking a tad awkward right now...

In October 2010 I asked Hugh Jackman, aka Wolverine, if he would run the NYC Half with me for Shoe4Africa. He agreed, thanks so much Hugh for just doing it. He did superb, despite squatting 320-lb leg weights two days before the race, doing virtually zero running - he ran superbly. And so so many shouts out on the way - he made so many people's day.
It was a great weekend for Shoe4Africa - In the LA Marathon Angus Wall ran 4:17 & raised over five grand exceeding his goal by over $1100,("I am running the LA marathon and, after looking for a great cause, landed on shoe 4 africa. please donate what you can!") Celebrity Hairdresser Tara Smith ran for us in NYC and made over $2K (including a nice donation from Rosario Dawson), and thanks so much to all the other Shoe4Africa runners (more pics when I get them), both celebs and stars; thank you all, to Urban Athletics for hosting our party, for our latest ambassador Mo Farah for winning the actual race!! Francis for filming/pics, Lissette for the help at the store, Jim for the T shirts... the list goes on! If I have forgotten you I beg your pardon; you are in my mind!
Great weekend for Kenya who once again remained the nation on top as they had really strong standings at the World Cross -- they may not have scooped all the gold but on points they were easily the strongest nation... speaking of which another great Half in Portugal from Tadese, 58:30... I wonder what Mo would have clocked in Lisbon??
03/19

Hugh Jackman joins Shoe4Africa!! He will run the NYC Half for us tomorrow, With Anthony Edwards (Goose), with Tom Cavanaugh (Ed), with James Legros (Mercy).. and a great bunch of people!!
03/18
Good luck to all the New York Half Marathoners -- we hope to see you at the Store on Sunday (yards from the finish, see below). I have a great team running with some actors out there as great ambassadors for the cause. It is a big weekend of running; the World's, Vivian Vs Linet. It is an Iten village showdown! It is also the super fast Lisbon half with former world XC champ Tadesse, now the world half record holder... And a Big shout out to Angus Wall, Oscar winner 2011, running for Shoe4Africa in the Los Angeles Marathon! "I am running the LA marathon and, after looking for a great cause, landed on shoe 4 africa. please donate what you can!"
And we read that Paula Radcliffe will return to action in May, over the 10k distance in Manchester @ the Bupa run.
03/12

We will have a few surprises for this one, c'mon over!
The store is meters away from the finishing line.
T shirts are available as of now at URBAN ATHLETICS ONLY (not through me).
Call 212-828-1906 as they are at Madison Ave until Saturday when they go down town for the event @ Urban downtown.
Men's & Women's available, dri-fit Nike running T's
03/11
@ lunch today, at the restaurant next to Madonna's new house. I definitely got the best deal when it came to desserts; don't go for the 'floating island' the chocolate mousse thing was much better. We started with the beet salad, was good, then to risotto, good, and the desserts as the food was not that filling... 81st btwn 3rd + Lex.
Missed this... Helen Clitheroe took the womens 3000m title at the Euro's - another Iten success story.

Another picture of Janeth Jepkosgei's school in the making.
03/10
Another day - my friend Lynn is sending me tips, and today when she sent the news that Melinda Gates, USAID, and Hon. H. Clinton were in Washington I spent the morning reading up, writing, etc on that one.. funny as I had just posted a letter yesterday to the Gates Foundation. Then we are wrapping up our half marathon details... it went from 9-am till 3pm before I knew it. If I start missing meals something is wrong!
Here's a nice project: The Start of the Janeth Jepkosgei School!
Talking to German Silva, he is coming to New York for the Half marathon... I want him to meet Chubbs for another project.
Hillary Kimaiyo is the fastest ever on Latin American soil with a 2:08:17 clocking when he won the LALA marathon... I wonder if Simon Biwott is still the fastest in the half?
Terribly sad news that Sally Mayerhoff, known well on the roads of NY, died in a tragic biking accident. {link}
03/09
All the way into March, when I was last looking it was January. The nice part about March was last night coaching the NY Flyers and we had a nice hard working group out there doing 45-minutes straight of 330-meters with 45-seconds rest continual, was the park was desolate; as dead as a doornail as they say in Texas.
They tell me in another month it is going to get warm, I hope so. I was at the Post Office today sending a million things off, shoes, Shoe4Africa singlets, blah blahs... just a note that our T shirts are not yet available, but they are coming soon!

Here's my friend the late Chris Kelong. We were racing in Kenya, he had just come back from winning the British 10k and had finished sixth at the world cross country championships. An up and coming as they called him in Kenya. Sadly he died shortly after in a road accident driving to his farm in Nakuru. He was in the car with Dominic Kirui, another huge talent, who lived. Sad story.
Even sadder, his parents did not have any photographs of him, and I had plenty, so shortly after my brain accident when I had the very odd happening of a former girlfriend stealing all my things I asked her for two things...
I could understand her keeping my laptops, the laptop of a mutual friend, money, clothes, all my books.. as her way of attempting to try to assert some kind of power, yet I asked for two things to be left with the doorman (she changed the keys & according to my friend the super changed a lot more too) - 1. My medical records, so I could take my brain scans for a checkup, and 2. the photos of Chris so I could send to his parents... imagine I got neither.Kind've sad because that all happened in 2000, and as recent as December 2008 I bumped into his relatives in Kenya... who don't have much love for the woman, that is for sure.
How on earth did I get on that story?
As the World's fold Africa stands up - the inaugural African XC Champs had four individual Kenyan wins, and four team titles for Kenya!! That is their B team my friends... what out in Spain...
I have decided to train myself, to run the High Heel race in NYC, it is only 400-meters, I am sure I can do it. I will begin training as soon as I can borrow a pair of high heel shoes.
03/08

SELF PORTRAIT- Mo Farah, who won the Euro's indoor championships this weekend. Congrats. This picture from the village of Iten, Kenya, a month, or two now, ago.
Yesterday I met a most interesting chap from Congo who is starting a small clinic on the island of Kiva - you know for about $500 a year you can pay the whole salary for a nurse... think about that the next time you treat yourself to a Tiger Woods golf club... Shocking the perspectives of this world.
Congrats to Mercy Cherono too from Kericho, Kenya who won the African XC Champs this past weekend, that is a name you will be hearing a lot more from in the future, that is for sure.
Talking of Kenya I have some great meetings lined up for my next visit, coming soon. In another way I can not believe that I am on th road again... funny talking to the Congolese man he was saying sometimes about the overwhelming feeling he has trying to do this clinic, at the moment he needs $20k a year to run it... I know exactly what he feels! Half my presentation and where I am at is balanced in grey space and sometimes I think my head is going to explode - Schools, races, students, hospital, meetings, here, there and in cyber, new entities, legals in three countries, events a new, fund raisers, clothing, half marathon team, marathon team, presentations of events done, collecting footage pictures of new projects and old projects, accounting for this year, and last year for a NJ firm, trying to remember what this expense was for and that, writing letters to charities and Orgs, preparing presentations for visitors a-coming, printing papers for those presentations, answering many emails, phone calls -- yeah; pressure is a privilege! And yup I have to rant sometimes... let's not start talking about web site woes... (please do not look at shoe4africa.org right now)
03/07
Many congrats to Wilson Kipsang who won the Lake Biwa Marathon in Japan on Sunday, in a new course record time where many great names have ran before, 2:06:13 -- Wilson is here helping all day at the SHOE4AFRICA women's event in Kenya where he was a great volunteer and also helped us with his pick-up truck too! Once again showing that karma works!
Lot of rain in NYC, I worked the entire weekend. It is funny, I have the same drive now for my charity as I used to have for running. Over the entire weekend I went out for just 90-minutes to have dinner with a friend downtown, that was it. The rest of the weekend I was replying to emails, writing letters, researching angles, rewriting... my eyes have gone boggly... but the funny thing is I completely recognize the running to work addiction. My social life is a complete zero right now. I skipped back a couple of years on AOL calendar to try and find the name of someone I thought could help me (with a contact at a big company) and I saw my 'old' social calendar, wow -- looking down an entire week I have not even seen a single friend from that week for over a year -- sorry buddies.
How distracted was I? People kept on sending me emails, "you are on CNN, they are showing you right now" -- have not seen a television in an age.
In the weekend's biggest XC race, Portugal (I've ran this one) at the Almond Blossom Cross Josphat Kiprono Menjo was a clear winner; he could not even make the top ten at the Kenya nationals, crazy huh? It is two week's now till I predict Kenya will run rampant in Spain in the very last annual world cross country championships. Sadly the fact that Kenya and Ethiopia have made it more like their area championships have made the 'big bosses' close down the doors... like that is really going to help bring up talent in 'their' countries.
03/06
In 1990 there was a plan to reduce Childhood mortality (Millennium Development Goal #4 reduce by 2/3)... well in Kenya, and pretty much in East Africa, it has soared the other way, 24.7% it has risen by.For the last year I have been trying to get a meeting with UNICEF Kenya, not to ask for money mind you as I know they won't give me a nth of their millions, but to sit and talk about the project I am doing. Nada; every time I try and pin down a date the emails never are returned. Now if I copy UNICEF UK I get a response at least (but never a meeting).
I wonder how many people who donate to charities know what the inside circus is all about -- UNICEF's mission is clearly trying to reduce child mortality and if the figures have got 25% worse should they not be trying something new?

Mo Farah and celebrity hair stylist Tara Smith [check her amazing client list] to front my new charity!
In America Shoe4Africa seems to be slowing down of late. What does one do? Re-invent energy. We are now looking to start U.K. & Irish branch. Mo's the running ambassador and Tara is giving us the style! Let's get it on.
The New T shirts for he half marathon are underbar. My ace photographer is on the West Coast right now, too bad, as I wanted to show you. They are available for a one day sale at Urban Athletics ONLY downtown after the New York Half Marathon. In fact, here's a glimpse preview, well it will be *here* tomorrow.
David Rudisha starts his season... 1:43 is amazing, this man has wheels
03/03

May I add this interview was conducted in minus 10-celsius, in the shade and we were standing their for twenty minutes. My jaw was frozen solid.
I am looking to open Shoe4Africa UK, with a new name actually too - does anyone know any pro bono lawyers [solicitors] in the UK?
I saw the infamous Dr. Dan Hamner for the first time in an age yesterday! Gosh, it was good to see; I have never been to see his office downtown, on Broadway and 9th St - as usual there is the whole production going on there; complete with all the crew, Teddi, Roz, Tom & Terry, plus a new friend. Dr Dan was playing some recordings he had made from his last trip down the deep South, he also told me his multi colored smart car has been garaged all winter long, like Tom's bike. Roz is still doing the races - she did her first NYC in 1984 and has been helping as a volunteer for the NYRR for as long, funnily enough she gets automatic entry as she has completed so many races, yet she still does her 9 +1. Teddi meanwhile had a bad back poor thing, and Terry was not eating his Tuna Sandwich!
For those of you runners who get injured Dr. Dan will manage, somehow to keep you running, he's a good runner himself.
3/02

Janeth Jepkosgei, holding the torch for Kenya. I remember the day after Janeth & Pamela got Silver & Gold in the Olympics, then every single woman in Kapsabet was out running the next morning trying their luck! The town only has about 64,000... it was amazing to see... Hey, if the two women did their town proud, then the guys also did; Kapsabet residents also grabbed the men's gold and the men's bronze with Bungei & Yego... and also we should mention that Claudio Berardelli, in my opinion an amazing coach, had 50% of those medals!
Anyway Janeth gets a mention for being 'Angel of the year' as we found out not only is she paying for three public school teachers, but she also gave a lot of money to the local church to be built as well!
So after one decent day of weather we plummeted back down today, just my luck, but at least these days I check the temps before leaving as I am super suspicious!
Thanks to Cotton Lloyd, the Glue of the NY Flyers for his continued support of my self; kindly bringing loaves of bread to the speed work out last night -- what a gentleman, a class act. I was meaning to do two parts to the speed work, first 45-mins of hills, then I wanted 20-minutes of tempo, but everyone rebelled; next time I have to tell everyone, two parts before they start.
PS: An ask for help-- there is a super smart Kenyan boy in school in Kenya University. His family fund raised like crazy to get him there... now the problem is that he is at a 'good' university all the other kids are working on a computer yet he is working on a note book made of... paper. If, only if, you have an old one in the cupboard that was left as you upgraded, and you would like to donate, then you know where to find me! I will be over there in a month...
03/01
The big race over the weekend was an event I have ran myself - the World's Best 10km. Quite a name, does it live up to it? Not this year -- the top three Kenyan ladies, Vivian C., Linet M., and Sylvia Kibet who were slated to run were asked not to by the Kenyan Federation. Funny in instances like this the Federation gets hammered -- what do they have to gain? Maybe you should hammer them IF you send the runners to run and then take a percentage... but, if you say traveling from Kenya, to Europe, to America, to Puerto Rico, to run a road 10km, then traveling all the way back in reverse is a good idea three weeks away from the prestigious World Cross Country Championships you must be crazy! The federation have the athletes best interests at heart, it is an honor to represent your country and an honor that should not be taken lightly. The same issue arose last year with Linet at the Half Marathon -- does any coach think this is wise for preps? Anyway... in the absence - Sentayehu Ejigu ETH 31:50 won the ladies, and Sammy Kitwara, who lives between Iten and Eldoret got in shape to take the men's title in 27:35... half a minute ahead of last season's top runner Leonard Komon, #4.
Meanwhile in Tokyo and Geb's absence another Ethiopia runner managed to cover for him in 2:07, with Paul Biwott (living five km from Sammy) making a fine comeback after a dry spell to nab third in 2:08 -- yet if Tokyo, with its world record applying entrants, really wants to enter the big-marathons scene one would hope they will expand the fields a bit...
Lunch yesterday with my friend Rich at Island. They would not swap any meal I wanted that had shoe-string fries with another form of potato, so quite out of season I took a salad - Gosh! I got hunger pains later. I have never really been a salad for a main course person; like my friend Joyce Chepchumba always said, "Let's leave that for the rabbits."Finally March brings weather one does not need to wear three pairs of gloves for... I am now down to two...

Another day of chiseling cold. I had dinner with George Hirsch, Senior Editor of Runner's World (Emeritus) and a legend in the running world of course. We went to Settepani up in Harlem, local to us both. It was very nice, well presented food, nice service and a place you can easily talk. I hate places where you feel you are eating in someone's conversation. In fact Shiney has bought an apartment right opposite, there is someone I have been meaning to catch up.
Here's a retro photo; the setting is the back of Brother Colm's house, Iten, Kenya, and yards away from my house. In the white buildings Lydia Cheromei, Rose Cheruiyot, and Florence Barsosio stayed. Often other athletes too. Edna Kiplagat was a part of this group, as was a great number of other great Kenyan runners.
This weekend, Haile Gebrselassie was supposed to be running in Japan. AP "The world-record holder withdrew from Sunday's Tokyo Marathon and it's unclear if he can run the half marathon in Vienna on April 17.
"I am really disappointed as I felt great in training, and I was ready to show something special again," Gebrselassie said Thursday in a statement.

Susan Chepkemei, one of Kenya's top marathoners who started off with great success at cross country... her best races were often in NYC. Runners who run well at XC run well at the NYC marathon... just a hint
Yesterday stress all day long, all day from dawn to dusk, onwards... everything that could go wrong did go wrong. To top it all I have a sore throat and my toothache, that I have had for years but is usually bearable has been terrible. Let me not go into my post office experience today, but I have definitely found a job I could do that involves sitting drinking tea with benefits and no work for the entire day as one computer was down...

Coming tomorrow, I write this so I don't forget as I have a memory like a flour sieve -- the great story how a small runway show selling shoes to benefit Shoe4Africa, how a headscarf made to benefit shoe4africa, how a book with 'proceeds from the profit of this book will go to Shoe4Africa' (and how the publisher of this poetry, or is it philosophy book I can't tell, responded), and now men's underwear has all been on sale.. to benefit Shoe4Africa... and how 'we' at Shoe4africa are waiting to see exactly how we benefit... maybe 'we' will one day get a contribution in Zimbabwean dollars??

Twenty degrees and frigid cold, with snow, in NYC. Wow; how lucky can one get. From running in central park to cycling home my hands virtually froze... then just as I was cursing my luck and hating cycling... in the evening I was going to coach the Flyers. Currently there is no cruelty against coaches clause so last week I did freeze, solid. No mistakes this week - I wore three jackets, three pairs of gloves, two hats, and leather basketball boots. I was cycling there in the bitter cold when boom, a flat tire. Normally I could have called by Assistant Coach, Joe, and asked him, take over, start the work out as I'll be late. BUT Joe has been sick of late. Secondly I could have walked there, but I was making perfect timing so as not to stand in the cold too long, so if I walked... So, I had to run. The next hassle was trying not to sweat in all these clothes, you see when I stop to coach, if you have been sweating, then stand in the cold for an hour - you die, simple, no way out.
Ha, and I thought running in basketball boots was going to be the hard part!
Advertising: as the weather has been terrible I went on the Eliptical the other day and watched the box -- Great Audi A8 commercial -- tells you absolutely nothing about the car, then I saw a Kleenex commercial telling you not to use one towel, why not keep on using disposables instead, doesn't make sense - Nope unless you are environmentally friendly it does not. Then what was that great skin care product being advertised 'Great skin comes at a great price' -- is that really how you want to get people to buy your product? Then Diesel clothes (was it) with the stunning slogan, 'Shop Stupid' -- well there is a challenge for the... stupid. Geez, here was me thinking of applying for a job to work with a proper charity that pays you something, I think I should go into advertising.Funny actually someone asked me 'what do you think of the King's speech?'-- when asked, I think it is supermarket wallpaper. Nice story to watch but does not ignite you, does not draw emotion, or make you question anything... so what really was the point to watching? Whereas a rerun of Casablanca -- seen it before but after watching it to start to think of values, of love, of friendship, of travel, of connections... Yeah King's speech, give it an Oscar for... Good acting? Now there is food for thought.
