Like the tennis commentator, “No other sports asks the competitors to have to change surface to compete like tennis, we have grass, clay, hard courts..”
Well excuse me but runners have short grass, mud, long grass (with the occasional hay bale to hop over), we have concrete, aphsalt, tartan, wooden boards - hey we even have water to jump through!
Anyway back to the Synchro - Put it in the Winter Olympics, let‘s see all those dumb smiles in ice cold water!
“I mainly paced a number of the runners, so I kept to avoiding this ultra distance so close to Chicago. It was quite the daz however, with runners from Singapore, Taiwan (I guess he was the olympic runner up for the marathon - this guy Kevin was so fast up the mountain, and he didn’t even break a sweat, and took his camera with him to take pictures!!), India, Slovenia, Belgium, and of coures the USA. (new york runners like Harry Morales, Admas Belilgne, Roger from Broadway ultras, Albert Laport) Anyway, all was good and no falls off cliffs... On to Vienna tomorrow for another week...cafes beware!”
Thanks, Randy is on holiday after working helping put on a big Ultra race in Switzerland. He is also the undisputed King of the Coffee south of 14th ST.
Later that afternoon I went over to Jonnie’s for one of his famous BBQ’s - the group was half Euro’s & the rest Triathlete - gosh do they have graphic war stories, S_’s stories of her red circles, and A_’s stories of the first time she pee’d in her wetsuit, “Three times, I’d never been able to do it before.” Jonnie added, “It adds to the buoyancy.” I just did not want to think of that mass 2,000 person start, and all those heads under the water - youch! Well the foods were delectable as usual, the range of cheeses (from Manhattan’s best cheese shop) outstanding, and the ice cream superb! I can’t say how good the salad was because anything green I avoided like the bubonic plague.
Women’s 5 x 5-miles - Westchester TC 2:27:35 Central Park TC 2:35:02 Warren Street S&A.C 2:37:18 (#6 New York Flyers 2:56:33) And Michelle Bleakley gets a shot.
Anyway to wrap it up, here‘s the WTC take on the matter: “The Westchester Track Club delivered another winning performance at Saturday's NYRR Club Championships in Central Park, winning the Open Men's and Open Women's team competitions, and taking home team awards in the Masters Men, Masters Women, and Sr. Masters Men categories.”
And another superstar talks; on his Gold, El G,
“Four years ago I cried tears of sadness, now there are tears of joy," he said. "I have experienced something wonderful with the people I love.
"It has been a tough year after working hard for eight years. I had respiratory problems and I didn't even know if I was going to go to the Olympics.
"I went to Rome (on July 2) and finished eighth. That is not good for me but I have come back through my willpower and the help of those around me."
Robin finally getting her warm ups and firing off well, Luiz picking up as the session ran on, Hotrod not using her dynamite gears this week but dueling with AmexLee, Becky Ballerina & Anne G pacing well, and Kwasi burning.. Out on each 2nd lap. Welcome to Alan a newbie. And welcome back to Michelle 1, Michelle 2 made it down too - “Last week I was having to wait at the office for a locksmith till 7:30.. A lock out!”
Lissy back now as a regular and fighting hard. Cara Fashion Plate completing the full five without a frown - that came from Chubby & I doing the math, but he noted, “I must be getting slim because I’m feeling the chills…” Suneet is looking to race again after San Fran, and has his eyes on the 3, Gus powered away and ran the last repeat the fastest - a sure of being in form. Welcome back to Eve, and Alec who ripped into Mad dog Alec (quite rightly) when some guy with a soccer ball aimed right for his legs…. ‘Don’t mess with a man in his intervals!’
Buffalo charging back and telling us he enjoys getting up at 5:30!! AmexChris pushing in before pushing off for a couple of weeks, Camille & Kate looking faster with each week, Stephen settled in, and zoomed off…. And a newsflash from the store, Chubby tells us that Costanza is now becoming chubby!
Speaking of which - does anyone have a tape of the men‘s 10,000? We know someone who is looking, so pls let us know if you can help!
As the Olympics progress so does life. I was walking along the street and a guy reverses in front of the flow of the street - he is blocking the road with an obnoxiously colored bright fluro jeep, “It’s a rental!” He shouts as if anyone was bothered about the color, most people were annoyed that he had parked right across the sidewalk. (Too bad his shirt wasn’t rental though). Well his doorman soon hurried out with the burberry luggage, and that was that. If it is not women with baby carriages, leashed dogs, talking on cellphones, and stepping sideways.. Then it is guys in sport coats and jeeps that are lucky to see an expressway with pink shirts and plaided shoes.
“What's already clear: Being overweight can make it harder to spot tumors early, catch recurrences, determine the best chemotherapy dose, even fit into radiation machines.
That in turn hurts chances of survival. One major study last year estimated that excess weight may account for 14 percent to 20 percent of all cancer deaths — 90,000 a year. Nearly two-thirds of U.S. adults now overweight!
Speaking of which - insane? Dog food is now offered in a low carb version! Adults no longer go hoopla over the concept, but hey, there’s Fido to consider!
“A spokesman for the British Olympic Association described her as "emotionally and physically drained". Without names you know it was Paula.. The woman who for the last couple of years has been cemented in for the Gold Medal performance. Paula, who the entire field knew about, and honed in on, and Paula who carried the weight of a sinking athletic nation on her 117-lb frame.
As sure as the Sun rises Paula Radcliffe will race and win again. She will come back and tread her footsteps where few others can even dare to imagine. She is no less of a glorious athlete on this day than she was last week. In fact her ability to show to the world that her humanity exists makes us truly believe that she above all others will rise again.
Anyway, Not to blow my own trumpet but 'Let’s run' Bazza had a marathon contest (check site) to guess the women’s marathon winner time - I was AGAIN ONE SECOND OUT guessing 2:26:21!! He he.
ON that competition - thanks again to NBC for the great coverage for once! It was a terrific race, a brutal one as the championships usually are, and we take our hats off to the runners for an amazing Olympic performance!
And does Tergat feel the pressure?
"This is a tricky question, As usual you find challenges and lots of pressure."
"I think about the next Olympics in Beijing. I don't want to rule it out but I see this as the best moment for me. I hope it works out well."
Well Tergat‘s Toyota was in the news today - World marathon record holder Paul Tergat survived a carjacking ordeal barely days before representing Kenya the ongoing Olympics in Athens, Greece.
Tergat’s Toyota Land Cruiser, was carjacked at his gate in Ngong on Wednesday night by a group of four armed gangsters.
The thugs held Tergat’s driver, Samuel Aleperi and another athlete James Kwambai hostage for about three hours before dumping them at Ngong Forest.
A last minute change of mind not to go to the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), where he was supposed to pick athletes saved the day for the athletics legend.
Tergat, who had earlier planned to pick marathon ace Sammy Korir and Joshua Chelang’a changed his plans at the last minute opting to have the driver pick them instead.
Tergat, said he was treating the matter as normal carjacking but admitted that he was scared stiff. "I’ve had sleepless nights trying to ponder about what their motive would have been," said Tergat. The car had just dropped off Korir at the Shade Hotel.
Korir, who pulled out from the Olympics had arrived from Italy, where he was undergoing treatment for a muscle injury.
In an interview, Tergat said the thugs mistook his driver for him because they look alike - Not the pre-Olympic breakfast needed! The Shade Hotel coincidentally is a nice little place on N’gong Road, near the house of Thomas Osano. Tergat’s house is on the top of a steep hill, the watchmen are armed with bows and arrows…. A sign of the times.
Let’s hope GailForce scoops up something special! And whilst all this is going on over the weekend in NYC we will be at the Club Teams on Saturday to shake a leg, and on Sunday (After an early long run) glued to the goggle box to check on the fortunes of the Athenian City’s runners in the most spectacular, and long awaited Women’s Olympic Marathon. The last three Olympics have seen Russia, Japan, and Ethiopia take the Golden prize… who will win on Sunday?
And Merl the pearl’s take? “Devers is the athlete I admire the most. I have been asked whether this will be my last Olympics ever since Barcelona,” she says. “I used to keep saying ‘yes’, or ‘maybe’. This time I have no idea.” Watch out Beijing ‘08
Local - Club Teams predictions - Westchester Track Club will sweep the awards - Open men, women, & Both team awards. The fight for Silver men will be a tough one with Warren St & West Side Runners taking the podium places. AS for the women, Central Park, and Warren St are my predictions for the tinware. Things to consider - How many Russians are in town, this greatly affects the WS women’s team as witnessed when the Euro Silver 10,000m lined up for them in March, How many of the West Side Runners (men) show up… and there is absolutely no contention for Westchester, if they turn up, they’ll win. Here’s a few of their athletes at the 5th Ave (borrowed & snipped from the club’s site).

Left to right: Elarbi Khattabi (overall winner in 4:10), Million Wolde (Olympic champion at 5000M), Girma Segni (1st 15-19 year old male in 4:35), Mike Mamo (4:29) and Eliud Njubi (1st 20-29 male in 4:11)
Sunday - TV Time. The women’s marathon. The hard hitters: Paula Radcliffe ~ Margaret Okayo ~ Catherine Ndereba ~ Deena Kastor ~ Lidia Simon ~ The Entire Japanese Team. Watch it on NBC, coverage begins 10 AM EST, though the race kicks off at 11 AM (when the Greek clock strikes 6 PM).
Talking Olympics a shocker that Andy Roddick lost to No. 16 Fernando Gonzalez of Chile 6-4, 6-4, and Mary Pierce of France beat Venus Williams 6-4, 6-4 yesterday.
"I'm gutted right now. It's not every day we get to play this," Roddick said. "You can't say, 'Next year."'I guess the Gods are not smiling on the planets.
Track night - Charlotte & Ross were the last to arrive, yet both earned bonus points as Charlotte agrees to do two long runs in four days, and Ross took a measly one second rest between upgrading from group 2 to 1. Welcome back to a tanned Anne G. And the Dutchman too, well not tanned. RobinM running sans warm up, Carole & Juan soon to be tuned in to NBC, Luiz - a blinder on the bonus 800 running away from everyone. Camille jumping back in to the hard training... Gary pushing well. Hotrod back in blonde, and running A-tomic! Beth fresh from buying a new apartment. Welcome back Becky Ballerina, looking in shape. And to Suneet - flying after his PR in the San Fran marathon. Kurt Le Vert found Green shorts! Tom 100 handing out, and hauling in. Shawn on the road to Amsterdam. Chucky China quietly slipping through the pack, playing it safe this week. Conor the Irish IronHorse who looks like he is really getting into shape. Tom from Kiwi land - welcome. Emily back again - and good to see! Michael and his friend - both did workouts in the AM, “Won’t be doing that next week!” & “Is it usual to ache for two days after your workouts?”
DavidP who just gets faster and faster, Brian B on the road to getting back into his form of lasst November. Welcome back Lissy! Cristina of the demon kick. Kevin with more gears than a Mitsuibishi, and great to see Cindy down there too. Gus - wins the award as being the good guy after revealing that he bought & loved ‘Train Hard, Win Easy’ a few years ago. Amelia back from the immigration offices of Calgary, Cara the fashion plate flying round the bends.
Cece reveals, “I was a sprinter at school..” aha ha that explains a lot, and makes many people feel better when she blows by. Kate, putting in the work, and getting the results. Jonnie back again and off to do another ½-iron man on the weekend, “I’m a traveling man…” And traveling? Kwasi back from the Poconoes, “You’ve just got to go…” Yeah, me and my cellphone.
Heidi looking on the road to a Boston qualifier every single week getting stronger & stronger. Queen of the Harriers who, as everyone else does the strides, lay back on the stands and said, “Where’s the flipping Sun?” AmexLee who did a long run on the weekend, then ran the 5th Ave as a qualifier and was not tempted to roar down the ave - earns bonus points for that one, and Sean F who hopped in and ran very well. Oh yes, and Chubby jumped in, that was a first! Way to go, and he ran very well too - should be sharp on Saturday!
Also seen down on the track was Olena Plastinina of the Warren Street Club, and Coach extraordinaire Mr. RLX overseeing the session. What a night, as Doctor John would say, and he incidentally was not playing his signature piano but up on the Upper East twiddling his thumbs.

World 100m champion Torri Edwards is out of Athens, after her appeal against a two-year drug ban was rejected Tuesday.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) chose to uphold the punishment imposed by the US Anti-Doping Agency.
Good article on the Greek doping scandal.
Watch out for Jose on TV - Sahara Marathon On PBS Thursday: The marathon is organized to dramatize the plight of the Sahrawi people, who were relocated by Morocco in 1976. Scheduled for 9 p.m.

From the NYRR we read, "Olympic 10,000-Meter Star Abdi Abdirahman to Run ING New York City Marathon 2004
New York, August 17, 2004 – Abdi Abdirahman, America’s leading contender at 10,000 meters in the 2004 Olympic Games, has announced plans to make his marathon debut at the ING New York City Marathon 2004.
“We are delighted to welcome Abdi to this year’s race,” said Allan Steinfeld, the president and CEO of New York Road Runners and the race director of the ING New York City Marathon.
Abdirahman, 25, of Tucson, Arizona, will represent the United States in the Olympic 10,000 meters this Friday, August 20, in Athens. He finished 10th in the Olympic 10,000 meters in Sydney in 2000, the highest placing by an American in that race, and was the 2001 USA 10,000-meter champion. Abdirahman secured his 2004 Olympic berth by finishing second at the U.S. Olympic Trials 10,000 meters in Sacramento last month.
The American field for the ING New York City Marathon 2004 is shaping up to become one of the strongest in years. Joining Abdirahman on the start line on Sunday, November 7, for the 35th running of the five-borough spectacle, will be Bob Kennedy, also making his marathon debut, and 2004 Olympians Dan Browne and Deena Kastor.
“We are thrilled to see this field continue to grow, and to bring the best of American distance running to New York,” said Steinfeld, noting that both Alberto Salazar and Kastor made memorable marathon debuts in New York. “We have high expectations for Abdi. He brings great strength, speed, and tenacity to the marathon distance.”
“The marathon is not the kind of thing you do just to do it,” said Abdirahman. “It’s going to take a lot of work. It’s going to be my focus after the 10K on Friday.”
Abdirahman was born in Mogadishu, Somalia. He moved to the United States with his family in 1990 and became a U.S. citizen in 2000. Abdirahman starred on the track and cross country teams at the University of Arizona, from which he graduated in 1999, and has been a strong and consistent presence on the distance running circuit ever since.
What is wrong with NBC - do they really believe we tune in to sports Not to watch sports, but to see their little waste-of-money supermarket-music reportages about athletes? We want to see the action - if I want the little boring, never in-depth info, stories I’ll read People magazine.
Travis tells,
“New Coffee shop in the town of Greenlawn, "Urban
Coffee". Could the new hang out for Urban Athletics runners on Long Island.
Good coffee, not as good as Starbucks, but good non the less. Also, a
couple of dollars less too. I recommend the banana latte.
Kenyan Sammy Korir, the second fastest marathon runner ever, is undergoing treatment for a leg injury in Italy but is expected to be fit for the Athens Olympic race on August 29.
On the Simba an article that stated,
“Kiplagat made the Kenya team for the 1996 world cross country championships at Stellenbosch in Cape Town, South Africa. She finished in 79 place but that did not discourage her.” Love that, loads of runners would be enthralled with a debut 79th in the world… in Kenyan athletics that result is shameful. Maybe Lornah was not too dis-happy either… I remember Sally Barsosio apologizing for finishing 11th, she was nearly in tears thinking she’d failed(!)
Sad for the Games, good for politics -
QATAR's world 3000m steeplechase champion, Saif Saaeed, Shaheen, formerly Kenya's Stephen Cherono, will not be allowed to compete at the Olympics.
"He is definitely out. He is ineligible to compete according to International Olympic Committee (IOC) rules," said Nick Davies, International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF).
Shaheen controversially switched countries just a few days before last year's World Championships and was said to have got a bonus of $1 million when he won his new country's first gold medal at that level.
The Gulf oil state had included Shaheen in their Olympic team, and he featured in the Qatari team guide, but Kenya did not finally agree to his participation in Athens as IOC eligibility rules differ from those of the IAAF.
Shaheen's former nation needed to agree to let him compete in the Olympics, and in similar fashion to the way they blocked Denmark's Wilson Kipketer in 1996, they refused to do so. And why not - which country would let the man, who would take a medal chance from a Kenyan athlete, run?
Also excluded from Athens is Shaheen's team-mate, Abdullah Ahmed Hassan, formerly the Kenyan runner Albert Chepkurui who was 4th in the World Champs last year.
Qatar still have several other Kenyan-born runners in their team, including world junior 800m champion Majed Saeed Sultan, who Kenyan newspapers have named as formerly being known as Elijah Kosgei. Sultan is currently under investigation for being too old when winning that title.
Marty sends news of this competition over in San Diego.

Yesterday, back in 1777 - France declares bankruptcy and 200-yrs later Elvis Presley died at Graceland Mansion in Memphis, Tennessee… and looking more into present day of the yesterdays’ @ the 5th Ave local scene results we saw Mike G had a good solid run, off licketyzip work, Kevin H easily busted The Chubby Boss by 4-secs, a tick ahead of Isaya O, now of WTC, Monsieur Mileage, WS, easily saw off an attack by the Russian Rocket, WS, - who told us the last time we saw him he is running 120-miles per week, with his clients. All will be back in action no doubt next Saturday for the Club Teams. CJ spun down the ave in fine style, no doubt in her usual fashion plate garb, of course, but of course, Steph Hodge had to be at the race - and ran well too, yet surprisingly there was not a huge entourage of Ethiopian WTC women…..
W10,000 update -
All-Africa and Afro-Asian Games 10,000m champion Ejigayehu Dibaba, (Team MIZUNO) the older sister of World 5000m gold medallist Tirunesh has taken the place of World 10,000m champion Berhane Adere in the women's 10,000m. Adere is out of top conditiona ccording to Dr. Woldemeskel Kostre
and not responding well to her training load the federation confirmed. Who are we to speculate? Adere is not pleased, but she is not the one who decides. Ejigayehu does not want to compete in two events in Athens, she is replaced in the women's 5000m by Meserat Defar, (MIZUNO) the World Indoor 3000m champion.
At the supermarket - is mine the only one where elderly women insist on reversing up the aisles blind-sighted dragging their trolleys into everyone, and why is the specials shelf super-empty, only to be 100% restocked the day after the sale ends?
Gezhagne Abera will now miss defending at the Olympic Marathon, due to an Achilles heel problem that he has been having for a few months (Ed’s note - Doesn’t he run in Mizuno too? Ha ha)Well along with Adere, it now seems King Geb is also having training difficulties - knee injuries and treatment, and remember that Bekele also withdrew from some comps. This summer due to injury pains too(!!)…..
Phew, well we are pleased to report that Starbucks & The Simba are doing great training in Italy (where Starbucks says he is for once not missing the S-bucks coffee), and they will leave next week for the Olympics, on the 23rd, for the 10,000m final where the Simba is a RED HOT fav!
Well tattoed Terry’s take? “Haile Gebrselassie might pull out of the 10,000 metres due to an injured Achilles tendon. Great Britain sweep all aside to reach last rounds of sexy sports Dressage, Finn-class sailing and badminton. Is there no stopping us?” When I first read it I thought that the pulling of Haile might have something to do with Great Britain advancing? Defo’ not.
Meanwhile in NYC on Saturday we have the city’s biggest locals race.
Perfect Timing - Last night I ran with my good friend Mgee. Huh, after seeing he ran a 4:24 for the mile on Saturday I should have known better - our easy pace is about two minutes apart. We started along with Jean Pitcher Pare, and of course heard the latest on one of this websites fav characters, Vinyl-Jim. Well the pace picked up, and my legs did not - Mgee, smiling as he breezed past every thing on wheels, ran 6:17/12’s for the last couple of miles, the last being up cat hill… and yes, we forgot to mention he was with the baby stroller and three-foot high Katie sitting in there. The sky turned black, and as we were jogging home I decided to make a beeline instead of detouring a little up Park Ave (where he lives), it turned out to be good timing because the moment I got home, the storm clouds opened… leaving me to muse, ‘Poor Lloyd (he of the flyers who believes in cotton T shirts for running)’ who we saw in the park as we left.

Big Olympic news - World Champion 0f the Paris World 10,000m championships Berhane Adere withdraws after struggling in training.
We hear from RandySax, “Man, Toby, the mileage is taking it's toll. I've been
on track with the program, but like you quoted in one
of your posts, "I go to bed tired, I wake up tired". No fun.’ he he, that’s the lure of the marathon.
R2 was quoting some guy who said, “if the result is unbelievable, it usually is..” or something on those lines… well the Greeks 200m winner missed a drugs test… I wonder why….‘Greek duo Kostas Kenteris and Katerina Thanou will be expelled from the Olympics for missing a drugs test. This is not the first time there have been escapee movements involving athletes, and the ‘road accident’ later was ‘maybe-maybe’ a set up too (their excuse for not attending the hearing)… Skeptic? Kenteris' failure to attend a drugs test in Mexico last year.. Remember that?? Greek officials have withdrawn sprinters Kostas Kenteris and Katerina Thanou from the Olympics after they missed a drugs test, team bosses met on Saturday and voted 5-1 to ban the pair, along with the coach Christos Tsekos (I wonder if he was the ‘1‘?).
And furthermore, The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) have revealed that Kenteris and Thanou were also under investigation for missing a doping test in Chicago, Illinois, earlier this week as they prepared for the Games. Meanwhile Australian Uber-man, Herb Elliott, says drug cheats should be jailed for their heinous crimes when speaking to the Beeb in a recent interview. Anyway the Olympic site further reported, “Hours after hinting the team could boycott the Games if the Greek pair were not expelled, the Swedish team said they would compete as planned.
"Yes, we will compete," spokesman Johan Storakers told Reuters by telephone from Sweden's Cyprus training camp. Asked whether they would compete even if the sprinters were cleared of any wrongdoing, Storakers said: "Yes, yes."
The Swedes wanted to see Olympic 200 metres champion Costas Kenteris and Katerina Thanou, the Sydney 100 metres silver medallist, expelled from the Athens Games after they missed a second doping test in less than a week.
They had even said they had talked about walking out of the Games.
"We have discussed leaving the Games and not taking part and we are waiting for the decision with interested ears," Storakers had said earlier on Saturday.” Johna from Sparvagen - what is he doing there as a spokesman??
The IAAF Marathon preview, men’s Predicts virtually nothing yet hints that many runners are in with a shout… and that Kenya have a solid team. Guess you knew that one already, well in all fairness it is a preview, but a dull one.

Torri Edwards: The Court of Arbitration for Sport said a final has to be made by 18 August if Edwards is to compete in Athens.
Edwards' defence rests on a product she took - coramine glucose that a physical therapist bought her which did not list nikethamide as an ingredient.
Cathy FREEMAN (AUS) in Athens. “The truth is I don’t know how I will feel a few minutes before and after the 400m final. I’m sure I will be sad for a moment, wishing to be at the track and compete. But it was my decision to hang up my spikes. All my life I wanted an Olympic gold medal. Once I had it, it was time for me to retire,” And, “Tonique WILLIAMS (BAH) is spectacular this year and the fastest in the world. But I think, in my heart, I want Ana GUEVARA (MEX) to win,” she admitted.
Seko the great, “Had I won the Olympic gold medal, I probably would not be coaching now,” says Toshihiko Seko, the legendary marathon runner of the 1980’s. Undefeated in all the major city marathons - Boston, Chicago, London, Fukuoka and Tokyo - from 1980 to 1987. With a boycott forcing Seko to miss the 1980 Olympic Games, he was a fav in the 1984 Olympics, he finished ’just’ though 14th in Los Angeles. Then in the last marathon of his illustrious career, he was 9th at the 1988 Olympic Games.
Since his retirement Seko has been coaching the S&B track team, which consists of only distance runners. Same career move like Tani-G’ head to the side guy. Watch the Japanese team in Athens, they will be favs for at least one marathon medal amongst the six athletes.
5th Ave Mile - what did we predict about the times last week??
1 Elarbi Khattabi 36 WTC NY 04:10, & 1st master
Conor O'Driscoll 43 WTC NY 04:30 - #1
Andrea Haver 24 CPTC NY 04:51 & 1st Master
Catherine Stone 42 CPTC NJ 05:09
And to all Urbanoso’s - congrats too:
CURTIS PAUL MACARI JERRY R ZLOTCHEW ETHAN ALDERSON BOB ZLOTCHEW DAVID COLLINS CHRISTIAN JORDAN CARA PULTZ DAVID CHESLIK THOMAS SHUFRO LEE COLLETT CAMILLE.So I missed the 5th ave mile.. And here is my excuse: Due to an appendicitis movement of out-of-body proportions - not my own I hasten to add… The story begins on the shore of New Jersey, actually within eyeshot of the Urban Store(!) It was Friday night, and a few Heinekens were being swallowed to swim amongst the giant 7th Star pizza from Hoboken (plug for a great pizza recommended by the Captain on our Thursday morning run in Central Park) and the Olympics ceremony was playing on the TV. Karen was deciding whether to crack open another beer and dish the PR she was due to run in the 5th Ave, or stay with one be a girl guide. She went Green, as any one who has tasted a Heineken with pizza surely would - we‘re not talking politics here. (Ophs I forgot to mention the tray of Brownies that were all but devoured too).
I was nattering how annoying it was that the commentators were talking over the top of the Bjork’s singing (not that I am a bjork fan, but I wanted to hear, or try to, what she was singing about) and the phone rang… Karen’s brother, Steve, had been rushed to hospital to get his appendices removed. So we went in to the Jersey Medical Center…. Steve was haggling with the Doctor (who looked like an extreme candidate for the next reality show - I‘m bored on the job and want to go home - what can I do to amuse myself), a young man from the west regions of Canada about wanting to hang onto the giblets post op. I added, (as Steve has a clear shiney head, and is half Chinese) that due to his Buddhism beliefs he must be allowed to have the entrails… anything parting the body in an unnatural fashion was a no, no unless blessed by the mighty Blue Buddha…
Perhaps the morphine was tinting the tongue of Steve (Did I mention his Grandfather was a great Chinese General?), but he was now offering the Doctor (who is looking for a wife, he’s aged 29-yrs for any of you matchstick.com’s) free meals at his restaurant (The Iron Monkey in Jersey City) should the spagastringbeans be given to him. The Doctor, worried that the appendices might end up in the soup, was telling Steve that all removed innards had to go to the pathologist to be inspected, collected, and finally rejected… to the trash. Portioned and parceled, and packaged in plastic.
At this point the nurse, who was asking the patient for financial advise, due to the fact no-one apparently pays in this new hospital apart from Gold Member Steve, was also asking for a signature on the dotted line - whilst the patient was under sedation?
Stand back - they did not even have a record that someone had even given him medication. No wonder no-one ever pays in this hospital! The Doctor meanwhile was exercising his humor, or truths, by telling the grandson of some China-legend that this operation was going to be his first, "Hell nobody wants to work in New Jersey, and so they fill this place with beginners."
Anyway to cut (ophs) a long story, saga, short.. A bit later, now 1:30 AM Karen, Steve’s girlfriend Elizabeth, and I were in the waiting room seeing if we could slide under the carefully designed row of chair arms specifically made to make sure nobody could rest in the resting room - I made it, slim hips, and did I mention I was wearing my slim lemon trousers designed for such positions? I started feeling guilty when the head nurse came in at two and said, "Because he is a Buddhist monk he’ll probably need some time to reflect after the Op…" but at that moment Elizabeth confirmed that he had spent some time in a monastery…
Anyway driving back from the hospital at 3 AM things were looking bleak though we had thought about making the Flyers Tarrytown long run instead…. However as the clock ticked to Four AM and the eyeballs were still wide open it seemed that Saturday events would be shelved to coffee shops, trivial pursuits, and visiting hours. Well I never did want to go to the races anyway! Anyway did I mention the major reason that Steve probably got the stomach rumbles was his hijack combat action the previous week of devouring single handedly (or mouthed) a sweet potato pie, and half a blueberry pie, and ½ a cartoon of Turkey Hill ice cream that was destined to be swallowed by me…. Oh, and yes we had good fun reading the cholesterol literature in the hospital that richly advised people to eat nothing except a drug pill called X-something and eat certain foods pertaining to the taste of nought, nil, & nothing. All to do with the belly button - I‘ll be at the 5th next year, or not.
Too bad someone has taken Heaven.com, I wanted to get it, then create an email address god@heaven.com… suppose StPeter@Heavensdoor will have to do.

World 100m champion Torri Edwards is suspended for two years for failing a drugs test.
Thus Gail Devers accepts Team USA's invitation to compete in the 100m at the Athens Games. (Kurt Le Vert’s take: “According to this If Edwards ban holds up it looks like Devers will run the 100 and the Hurdles - I hope she reconsiders - Not because I want Jones to run but I think it would really be great for Devers to finally win that Olympic Gold in the Hurdles, and I would like to see her just do that to prevent any distractions. Now I know she is a professional and has done this how many times but its got to take a bit out of you to run all those races. If she makes the final she would run Four races one Friday and Saturday before running Round 1 and 2 of th Hurdles on Sunday - Semis on Monday and Finals on Tuesday…”)
And Britain's Kelly Holmes confirms she will run the 1500m at the Olympic Games. Meanwhile three Russian athletes failed drug tests days before they left for the Olympic Games. The A samples of two weightlifters and a track and field athlete showed the presence of banned substances.
Officials refused to disclose the athletes' names before their B samples are tested.
Well we promised a picture of The new Kinchella (1:43.11)
- Billy (1:43.06)
as the most famous winning the World Champs twice, Patrick (1:42.98)
won the Kenyan nationals, and was indeed faster than brother Billy, then came the little ‘un: Youssef Saad Kamel of BRN
.
However this photo was taken a few years ago when he was an unknown and living in Kenya, left behind by his father - who is in Europe. Watch out for him in the Olympics - he is the new Asian record holder. Interesting - Europe, Africa, and Asia all have Kenyan born athletes holding the continent records. (Savvy readers will recognize his bracelet, that we now have, and may raffle off should he win an Olympic medal).
The BBC's Panorama broadcast, which implied corruption among games officials, could possibly hurt London's chances of winning the Olympic bid. Yep, that could do it(!) Also London’s failure to produce a stadium for the World Champs 2005 might also let the IOC know that London may not be the best place for the Games.
Like Father, like daughter - Steve’s chiseler runz fast! -
Neely Spence outran some of the toughest competition in the United States and Canada to take second in the 1600-meter run at the Hershey's National Track & Field Championships at Milton Hershey School last Saturday.
Her personal best time of 5:09 was eight seconds behind Stephanie Smith of Ontario, whose 5:01 time broke the meet record for the 13-14 age division.
Spence, of Shippensburg, said she had to run a smart race to be competitive with her opponents. "If it wasn't so windy and I'd been wearing spikes and had a less-thick T-shirt on, I could've ran 5:06," Spence said.
Thx to Shawn for this story about the Olympics from 1904! The infamous Fred L.

We read, “While acknowledging that Jones has never been charged with a doping offense, WADA chief Dick Pound pointed out it might be possible to strip an athlete of Olympic medals up to eight years later. That means Jones' five medals from the 2000 Sydney Games could be at risk if she is found guilty of using performance-enhancing substances.
Jones is under investigation by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency but has not been charged.
''Mr. Pound is well known for his colorful remarks. I would hope that as head of the World Anti-Doping Agency he would not prejudge any athlete,'' USA Track & Field spokeswoman Jill Geer said.
Jones' ex-husband, C.J. Hunter, reportedly has told federal authorities in the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative probe that Jones used banned drugs before, during and after the 2000 Games.”
Talking to SnapperDon who is still in hospital recovering from his leg accident, and he was asking about the local running scene, let him know, give him a call as he’d love to hear from you - 718-534-3508, sitting in a ward all day can be quite boring as many of us can attest to!
Last night was the Flyers 15th do - fun to see so many of the runners in dress clothes, and also to learn more about the life’s of everyone, like who has a twin sister that models for trump, who coached & taught mathamatics in Botswana,
who’s movin’ in and who’s movin’ out, the price of shots on 59th St, y’know all the usuals that escape a Tuesday night workout. Great hosting job by Urs Yodel & party set up by Maria & Paulo.

Two-time Olympic champion Gail Devers will run in the 100m if Torri Edwards is suspended for drug use, according to newspaper reports.
Devers' agent Greg Foster told the New York Times that the athlete had been approached by an official to take the spot in the country's Olympic team.
If Devers were to turn down the spot, Marion Jones, the defending Olympic 100m champion, would be next in line.
Meanwhile Paula-talk: Lost out on gold in the 10,000m at Sydney in 2000 and is determined to avoid a repeat in the longer event.
"I definitely hold more cards in the marathon in terms of how I run the race," she said. "I am probably the fastest finisher in the field." BUT Mike Whittingham, performance director of UK Sport, the body responsible for funding many British competitors, warned the dust could be Radcliffe's biggest opponent.
"The quality of the air itself is not such a problem, but the real concern is cement dust," he said. "The athletes have prepared for the heat, but with the authorities building up until the last minute there will be a lot of dust in the air.
"If the wind blows on the day of the marathon there will be a lot of people very upset." Check it out - a week on Sunday!
Catherine Ndereba is still here in PA, she was training hard on the track and remains a sentimental fav to loads of Americans who love the fact that she lives and trains on the East Coast with Manager Lisa Buster who also looks after John Kagwe, John Itati, and a slue of other zoomy runners.
Irish 10,000m runner Cathal Lombard faces a two-year ban after admitting taking the banned blood-boosting substance EPO.
''Out of my respect for Mark Carroll and in the interest of the sport, I want the Irish 10,000m record set by me in April annulled and returned to Mark as soon as possible.'' Lombard again reiterated that his coach Joe Doonan had no inkling of his actions. ''Joe Doonan, my coach, had absolutely no involvement in, or knowledge, of my actions,'' he said.
''He is a wonderful man and a wonderful coach. I am sorry for the hurt I have caused to him.
Sally Barsosio, one of Kenya’s toughest females has been included to the Olympic 10,000 team.
Barsosio, who occasionally turned up for classes, went to Sing'ore High School, that is one of the top school in producing women runners for the country over the years, will combine with Alice T. and Lucy K. who is based in Japan. How good was her school? The school team once comprised the entire Kenyan Junior women’s team for the world XC Championships, and they won the World Champs, and took 1 & 2 overall in the race!!
And over to Mr. Tergat: "Nobody will deny me this time," said Tergat who is gunning for the only medal missing from his closet, an Olympic gold medal.
One warning to opponents. "If I remain with you after the 35th kilometres, it will be difficult to deny me and I will stick with anybody all the way to the stadium," he said.
Nice article on Kenya - Ethiopia.
More on Bernard Williams case: Kenyan boxer David Munyasia has become the first Olympic competitor to fail a drugs test in Athens and will subsequently miss the Olympic Games.
"David Munyasia has been excluded from the Games after testing positive for cathine, a prohibited stimulant" said Olympics spokeswoman Giselle Davies. What? This is the same as Williams - it is hemp! "Catha edulis Forsk", known as khat or Miraa or Qat, is a plant used in parts of Africa and the Arab Peninsula, and chewed for 'enjoyment'.
Fifth Avenue Mile - Coming on Saturday. See to see that there is NO elite race at all this year, for the first time since its conception we believe!
This event was once one of the best in the world for road miles, and now it has turned into another weekend race whose results will in no way match those of towns that host similar miles - don’t believe? Well wait for the results and see. Last week were two mile races with hoards of Sub 4:10 men in both…. We are betting you will not see one person go sub 4:10.

We read, “NYRR will award a total of $600 in prize money in the 2004 Fifth Avenue Mile races, in honor of the 50th anniversary this year of the running of the first sub-four minute mile (Roger Bannister, 3:59.4, May 6, 1954). The male and female winner of age groups 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and 70+ will each receive $50.” To think you used to run for a new Mercedes and $$, now you run to pay to fill your own tank.Well as someone wrote in, “All I can say is that there's just one mile between me and my 2005 NYCM guaranteed entry.” ha ha, liked that one!
The queen of the Harriers reports, “Congratulations to Christine and Kieran!!!
Their 7lb, 3oz son was born this morning.
All are happy and healthy!” Talking about Kiernan O’Connor from the NY Harriers - Up the Oirish!
Anyway speaking of the Queen where was she when we were washed ashore on the 6th ST track? Kudos to the hearty souls who made it out there

Camille settling on Grete’s, good move, David P out on his own. Kwasi back from his Euro vacation looking one sandwich over the scale. Steve hanging tough, with AmexChris hanging in. AmexLee not far behind and looking better week 4 week. A hard night, given the storms, lightning, and black skies…. Here’s hoping for sun next week.

USA Today’s Olympic men’s marathon picks -

Gold: Evans Rutto, Kenya
Silver: Tadayuki Ojima, Japan
Bronze: Tereje Wodajo, Ethiopia. Kool, Rutto is not even in the Kenyan team, god only knows how he is going to win gold!
Latest on the doping world -
“American sprinter Bernard Williams tested positive for a metabolite of cannabis at a meeting in Seville in June, but can still compete in Athens.” And so he should! Cannabis is not going to make you run 100m faster at all! So he had a puff at a party… big deal.
Yucel Kop, the coach and husband of Turkey's European 1500m champion Sureyya Ayhan, has admitted acting "aggressively" towards sampling officers from the World Anti-Doping Agency in the wake of allegations that Ayhan manipulated a drugs test by providing a urine sample from another woman.
Kop said he pulled a male sampling officer out of the toilet in Turkey where his wife was providing a recent sample and locked a female official inside the testing room.
The officials had allegedly seen Ayhan holding two samples during one test and asked her to hand them both over. She reportedly refused and poured one of the samples down a toilet.
Culpeppers On the "Today Show": Alan and Shayne Culpepper will appear on the "Today Show" today… and a few yesterdays ago, like yesterday and 171-years more, Chicago was incorporated as a village - how times have changed - Alan Culpepper ran his marathon pr of 2:09:41 in that village…..
A bike crash in Central Park - two bikes…. Begging the question, what happens when you dial 911. There were three ambulances, one police car, a large fire engine truck, one small fire truck to watch the two cyclists walk into the back of one ambulance. As the big fire truck drove off out of the park another small one arrived. I thought (before seeing the two bikers) that an earthquake had erupted…. And on that timely note - Today’s tips: To increase your chances of staying accident-free in a group
ride, try to stay at the front of the pack. Crashes typically
happen in the back half of the group.
Kenyan team captain talks,
“Kibowen, who won the 5,000m in Zurich Grand Prix said he expects very fast times in Athens. In the 5,000m, he said, the race would have to be very fast otherwise opportunists take off with the title.” And, “He said although the 10,000m runners had tried in Zurich, they would have to pull up their socks in Athens. All the three Kenyan Olympic representatives in the 10,000m failed to impress in the Zurich event.”The Kenyans are worried that other nations might ‘steal’ medals if the pace falls in the distance races - and the K-boys get out kicked.
In nine days we have the Olympic men’s 10,000 final, and it is the Ethiopians who are fielding the dream team, Men's 10,000m Kenenisa Bekele, Haile Gebrselassie, and Sileshi Sihine. Even their reserve runner, Gebregziabher Gebremariam, is probably the fourth best in the world right now! The race is at 22:35 Greek time, that is 3:30 pm local time here in NYC, on NBC (We hope!)
Locally the 5th Ave mile this weekend - Urban Athletics Paul (who won last Saturday) will be toeing the line in the men’s 30-39 division hoping to take a win. The Chubby Boss is hoping to take the Master’s title. Sad to report that John Itati, as yet undefeated at the 5th Ave mile in his two races will not be in the city, he‘s racing in Puerto Rico.
Former Empire Games gold-medal winning runner Jim Alford has passed away at the age of 91.
Alford won the 880 yards in Sydney in 1938, becoming the first athlete in a Welsh vest to strike gold in the Empire Games.
In the NY Times today, “Researchers say elite distance runners share several inborn
physiological traits, including large hearts, an efficient
way of moving and an ability to keep running when they are
exerting so much effort that they are panting for breath,
that make them faster than most recreational runners.”
“They also naturally avoid the sort of errors in technique
that Dr. Robert Fitts, an exercise physiologist and
competitive runner at Marquette University, sees in
recreational athletes who run in 5- and 10-kilometer road
races.”
“For example, Dr. Fitts says, many recreational runners turn
their feet out to the side rather than keeping them in a
straight line. That wastes energy and slows runners down.”
Well well, what do we have to say to that? Hard one - I never considered myself elite as my training partners were often the people I thought about as elite, yet having won National Championship medals I think I can reply to Dr. Fitts on this one with the photo below -

Don’t be discouraged if you have an odd style, feet sticking out, knees bending in - it takes all sorts to complete the field, and anyone who tells you differently has not heard the name of Duck-foot N’gugi, Olympic Champ!
The article continues, “The inefficient runners were not necessarily those who
looked more awkward as they ran.
"Some runners in our lab don't look good when they run, but
they are very economical," Dr. Morgan said. "Others are
aesthetically beautiful but are not economical."
Well on that one I failed too - I was terribly inefficient as measured on Bengt Saltin’s Stockholm laboratories - one of the world’s leading sports physiologists. I used more oxygen than a fleet of deep sea divers. Sorry, but I hate to read of people putting the dampers on runners, Yes - you can do it... if You believe you can do it, don't listen to excuses, or anyone who tells you you can't reach levels higher than the norm. Read too much into this Times article, and yes you'll put the brakes on your own improvement thinking perhaps you have not the physical necessities.... Just do it.

Jones Show rolls on - Marion Jones won both the long jump and the 4x100m relay in Munich in her first competitive action for three weeks.
Jones, who is under investigation by the US Anti-Doping Agency despite never having failed a drugs test, helped the USA beat France and Germany.
She jumped 6.82m to win the long jump and was part of the 4x100m US relay team that won in 41.37 seconds, the fastest time in the world this year.
Mailbag - Michiel Run A’Dam,
“The Golden League competition is not broadcasted live in Holland only in a compact 45' version late at night. That’s better than it has been before since the whole 6 event thing has been behind the decoder for years! And so I saw a very determined Bernard Lagat beat Hicham El G . last night. And this is the same runner who has not been defeated for years until this Olympic season started. “He has been having some health problems and became a father I read so his path to a well deserved gold medal in Athens is not without bumps. If he breaks the tape coming in 1st place on the 24th of august at 23.40 in the night he could dye on tartan figurally spoken and finish his career.
“Watching the Norwich Union British Grand Prix on BBC on the 30th of July I saw a 24 year old Australian guy as tall as the Paris Eiffel tower ( he is huge for as distance runner) almost beat mar. Gebre himself. The 31 year old runner is not the same anymore as the one who just defeated anybody in 5 and 10K on any given day. Craig Mottram is unchallenged the new white revelation in distance clocking 12.55.76 in London. Which is just ultra-phenomenal distance running. He must be 1.90 in cm at least he just looked like an NBA player running behind Gebre. But he has the thin legs like any African runner. And who said African runners are undefeatable when it really comes to it, I never said this!
“Games are coming up I will not go there since the great city of Athens will be like a fortress from now on. Costs of securing the whole thing are over 1 billion in dollars. It will not be really fun for the participants I guess as they will be checked also every time they move themselves. I will just visit Brussels van Damme Memorial in September again as I do every year. I expect some athletes to fly around the 400 meter track this year since it is just one week after the Olympics. You can fill in the names of the ones who will fly yourself I guess. Brussels is a nice place, its close to Amsterdam(still the one and only place to be in western Europe) the food and the beer tastes great and their is hardly any security necessary. More later this week.” Thanks to Michiel.
From an anonymous poster in the mailbag, “I went to Falmouth this past weekend, and could only smile when running flat out huffing and puffing Tatyana P. cruised by at the age of 49! This just when I was musing that I can no longer keep up with the women in the race. To rub in the salt Valentina Yegorova (also now a master), looking 20-lbs overweight with the midriff to prove it, also sailed by!

Spreading like wild fire, water - “TWO US swimmers used banned performance enhancing drugs just weeks before the Sydney Olympics.
The two female athletes used a human growth hormone for several months and one of them was a high-profile swimmer.
A senior medical adviser to 2000 US swim team told The Advertiser the women used the drug MediTropin to assist with their training recovery.
The International Olympic Committee has confirmed MediTropin was banned at the time of its use and the reports are expected to lead to an investigation by the IOC.

The race directors of the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon and the ING New York City Marathon yesterday announced the $1 million Athens Marathon Challenge. This initiative will award $500,000 to an American man or woman who wins the 2004 Olympic marathon gold medal in Athens later this month, for a total possible payout of $1 million.
"This collaboration is the first of what we expect will be many more combined initiatives between our two great marathons as we join forces to encourage and support our American athletes and raise the level of public awareness for our sport," said ‘the Pope’ Steinfeld, also the president and CEO of New York Road Runners.

Where next to see Gilbert the Killer? At the Bobby Crim festival of running in two weeks time. We bet Okari will destroy the CR there too! This guy is on fire on the US Roads.
We hear from Shawn & Eddy down in Albuquerque. Doing well and hoping that things will clear up soon. We wish them all the best, and hope the arbitration will run smoothly - as we mentioned earlier we can not release any details but the evidence they have is Very conclusive that Eddy is the athlete that we have always known and admired - totally Drug Free. However I know his alcohol levels on certain party nights can not be reported as such. It stinks that people have mistakes on scores, receipts, statements all the time - but if there is something involved in drugs people presume that immediately the athlete must be at fault. Strange, imagine it could happen to you.
We hear today from Jax Kipn’gok on the phone, he too will run at Crim and will race in Mexico on Sunday - he was happy with his time at Falmouth, though not with the position - “I was hoping for top five…” That guy has high standards!

Torri Edwards, the world 100m champion, is set to miss the Olympics after being found guilty of taking drugs. Her last hope of being allowed to run in Athens lies in an appeal to the international Court of Arbitration for Sport, which has established an office in the Greek capital to deal with such cases.
Good feedback continues to flow in from the web cast… it was really fun to do it, but like theater, you really want to go back on some things you say, and re-say them!
Out and about today at a place in Manhattan, “Back in P.J. Clarke's heyday, Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole were regulars. The classic taproom with it's tin ceiling and oak bar made the perfect backdrop for the Ray Milland film 'The Lost Weekend.' Today it's a hangout for unreconstructed cholesterol aficionados who thrill to the famous bacon-cheeseburger, the extra-large shell steaks and corned beef and eggs. Though closed for most of 2002 for extensive renovations, the bar is essentially the same place it was when it opened for business in 1885, from the unfinished bar to the original mosaic tile floor. P.J.'s is a favorite habitat of that increasingly rare bird -- the lunchtime drinker.”And recently we went to “Il Monello, on Second Ave: “After a quarter-century, the trailblazing Tuscan restaurant of the Giovannetti family has not lost a step. Lucca native Adi and his wife Rosanna set sky-high standards for "northern Italian" when the term had little resonance. They gave it plenty, in the process setting the bar for thousands who would follow. Their Midtown restaurant Il Nido is a paradigm of the form. These are proud professionals and it's fun to be focus of their attention to every nuance of fine dining. The only change over time is a softening of Il Monello's setting. As patrons shed ties, the restaurant sheds starchiness. Just when you think its clientele is aging, in walks Patrick Ewing of the Knicks, as determined to dig into pristine seafood and perfect pasta as anyone. Giovannetti's kitchens are masters of risotto, often delivering a quartet on a single plate.” I have been slipping with the food reviews these days, due to the lack of focus I seem to have theses days on that delectable part of dining La Desert! At Monello‘s I had fresh linguine in a saffron sauce and fresh sea food - twas rather damn natty. Don‘t bother ordering a starter or a desert in this place as they bring a bread plate with a veritable salad included, and close the night with a plate of biscotti shortbread. The place is on the higher end of the price rung, but not as bad as Nino‘s on first ave where we also forgot to jot a review. My gripe for that place was the waiter stands by your table and every time you take a sip of pellegrino feels obliged to top up the glass… like, move on Buster - any privacy round here?
Little fun story sent in from Michele T,
“Gotta Love This Professor
“At Duke University, there were four sophomores taking Organic Chemistry.
They were doing so well on all the quizzes, midterms and labs, etc.,
that each had an A so far for the semester. These four friends were so
confident that the weekend before finals, they decided to go up to the University
of Virginia and party with some friends there. They had a
great time, but after all the hearty partying, they slept all day Sunday
and didn't make it back to Duke until early Monday morning. Rather than
taking the final then, they decided to find their professor after the final and
explain to him why they missed it. They explained that they had gone to
UVA for the weekend with the plan to come back in time to study, but,
unfortunately, they had a flat tire on the way back, didn't have a
spare, and couldn't get help for a long time. As a result, they missed the
final.
“The professor thought it over and then agreed they could make up the
final the following day. The guys were elated and relieved. They studied that
night and went in the next day at the time the professor had told them.
He placed them in separate rooms and handed each of them a test booklet,
and told them to begin.
“They looked at the first problem, worth five points. It was something
simple about free radical formation. Cool, they thought! All at the same time,
each one in his separate room, thought, this is going to be easy.
“Each finished the lengthy problem and then turned the page.
On the second page was written:

Deena Kastor, on RW, on the mara preps: “This is still a pretty hard week of training. Right now the thing I'm focusing on is getting a constant stream of food in me and be sleeping a lot. Ice baths, eating a lot and sleeping a lot. This will be a 100 mile week, which is one of the lowest I've had in a while. My highest week was 140 miles with a 24-mile long run.”

Turkish world 1500m silver medallist Sureyya Ayhan tried to submit a sample of someone else's urine in a doping test last month (as remembered by the famous Australian incident of a male discus thrower being found pregnant), the country's top sports official announced.
The admission from Turkey's director of sport Mehmet Atalay came after newspapers and TV stations reported that Ayhan had pulled out of the Athens Olympics because she had tried to 'fix' the doping test and not due to a ‘hamstring’ injury as she herself had reported.
Shocking news about the Irish runner Cathal Lombard testing positive for EPO this past weekend. And here in the US Jerome Young also tests positive, though not for a steroid, but EPO as well.
Falmouth Gilbert Okari continues to dazzle - 31:08 (4:23 pace) for 7.1 miles. Alevtina Ivanova, second last year, won in 36:13. Jax, 33:11, was the first master and the undefeatable Tatyana Pozdnyakova of the Ukraine (38:35) took the women‘s title at 49-yrs of age! Unbelievable weather, not a drop of humidity, helped the outstanding men’s CR. The top American male was Khalid ’The Khannouch’ Khannouchi (32:26-9th overall) of Ossining, NY - Great result showing that his marathon training is going well . Kate O'Neill of New Haven CT (36:26) was the top American woman, in #2 - great result, and the runners-up overall, Robert Cheruiyot Kenya 31:37, also reports that his training for Chicago is going absolutely great… and he has now taken to wearing Blue Fila Racing shoes - which will be the new color, fall 2004. Good to see our Reston Shoe4Africa friend out there Keith Dowling running well. On that note thx to Chris Bilsky of MCNY for her continued support of the program.. Back to Falmouth, Andrew Masai is back on the master scene, but not running as well as he has been - looking slim though, and John Itati will be here for the next three months chiseling himself into form… and Susan Chepkemei never started the race, and our men‘s tip was third overall, oh well - at least I did not put money on it! Bernie The Chairman was out there, and it was heard that some people were asking Bernie if the post race food could be as good as Falmouth‘s is… the event is a fabulous convergence of running talent, organization, ambiance, quality - I could go on, just RUN it 2005! PS: There is a cool Starbucks very near to the race headquaters.

Coming up this weekend: The trifactor - The best race: Falmouth road race. The best local race: Shea Stadium 5k (Flat & fast), an excellent PR course that does not start at the crack of dawn, and for those running NYC who want to get a head start on the Longies - the NYRR long training run in Central Park.Totally recommended, we read, “Log your marathon training miles this weekend at the ING New York City Marathon Long Training Run #1 on Saturday, August 7, at 7:00 a.m. in Central Park. You choose the pace (pacesetters provided) and distance from 6 to 20 miles, and we’ll provide water, lemon-lime Gatorade, PowerGel, bagels, bananas, and plenty of company. Though this event is noncompetitive, registration is required.”

The Essential Guide to running the New York City Marathon.- The book for all NYC Marathoners!
Called the Bible of the New York City Marathon by Runner's World European Edition, May 2003
"An essential book for the Marathoner, a fun and entertaining read with loads of information. A good tool for anyone running the NYCM."

Kerry McCann, who came to the NYC marathon a year or so ago is currently training in St Moritz Switzerland, like a host of other stars for the upcoming Olympics - Lee Troop of Oz also, and Wilson Kipketer the undisputed king of the 800 (remember that Joey was King of the Streets) - and the best Danish, urm, runner in history. Kerry, I remember always had her kids dancing round her legs in the hospitality suite, thus it is no surprise she has taken the nippers with her to Suisse. The mani benefit of going to a high altitude training camp she thinks? "I usually get my mum to come over at 6am so I can run and then come back and get Benny off to school," McCann said. "Here, I can sleep in till 10am. "It's not the altitude," she said of St Moritz, "it's being away and able to rest."
And Tergat’s Olympic thoughts -
“My only worry is the Marathon being the last event, run on the last day of the Games. The other athletes may create (party) disturbance and a lot of noise (in the village the night before) because they will already have completed their competition programme,” mused Tergat.
"Ndereba and Okayo are capable of winning the race and I can't dismiss Chelagat either," said Tergat.Hm always the diplomat, and rightly so. We will dismiss Chelagat… and also point out that a marital connection Mrs Chelagat has with a certain official may very well have a part to play with her team selection ousting athletes such as Joyce Chepchumba, and Susan Chepkemei whose credentials in any given year, over the past decade, outshine those of Alice’s.
The Big race today is the “One day world champs” event - Zurich. Always a host of great races, and a place Mutola has made her own winning for over a decade herself in the 800m. Also watch out for Kamathi to run faster than 13:19 in the 5000m to let dying crows decompose and prove that he was the right man for the Olympic squad. Suzy Favor is also in the 1500m, with Toomey & Rudolph trying to get in as we write. The big event maybe the steeplechase where ‘Stephen‘ looks for Olympic redemption. “I have no regrets about my change of nationality to Qatar. I found out at the beginning of June that there was no hope under IOC rules that I would be able to compete in Athens. But I must accept that. They are just applying the same rules as they do for everyone else. I want to run fast here in Zurich, to send a signal to the world that even though I am not at the Olympics I can still produce a good performance. Yes, a World record! This (Zurich) is now my Olympics,”
POST Olympics - Haile Gebrselassie - half-marathon in the BUPA Great North Run on 26 September, in Newcastle, England. Paul Kosgei currently has the CR at 59:58Quote of the day, Race chief Brendan Foster said: "It is a bit of a coup getting him to come and run here." A bit of an understatement!
Poster Girl - congrats to Anne K, who is on the cover shot of the Flyer for the Mind, Body, Fitness 4-miler…. Wearing the Pirate Black. And who else is seen here wearing the pirates new uniform?
Looks like Evans Il Rutto, who is currently training to hunt for the $300,000 gold on offer for a new world’s best at Chicago. Laughable that this man is not on an Olmpic team after running 2:05 & 2:06 with wins at Chicago & London in the last calendar year.. To me it makes a complete mockery of the Olympic movement - Let’s go back to the days of 776 BC when the best were invited to run regardless of nationality or politic. Till that day the winning medals at London, NYC, Boston, & Chicago must rank as high as an Olympic medal.
It always seems I get caught shopping at the wrong moment - I was in the queue for the supermarket check out yesterday when the postmaster from the Yorkville Station called out to me from behind, he was standing with his son, “Look that is Toby, he’s a good runner, and see what he eats!” I had ten packets of linguine, and two cases of Coors, oh and some salt for good measure. Now why can’t anyone catch me when I am buying my ruby red grapefruits?

Did ya catch the first NYRR Marathon clinic web cast? We had a ball. Zoomalong being totally professional with the intros etc, I was waiting for her to slip up but no she did not, then Lauren ably adding all the Nutro touches, and me sitting there thinking ‘wow‘ what If I say something wrong, there‘s no delete!’ Sam the webman in his snappy retro Asics was in charge of the airwaves bit, and we were high up in the Steinfeld Towers part of the club. The Voice of the NYRR was up there too, with a natty neck chain that we were rather jealous of… then it was down to 6th ST for the coaching ‘in-da-flesh‘.
Back on track again! Twas only a week off, but it felt like a month.
Many new faces, and old alike: Seth dropped by, Conor the Ironhorse and ran a zippy 800 looking like the athlete we knew him to be, Kurt Le Vert has that green singlet ordered, Gary in his new H garb, Beth hitting the splits, Kevin didn’t feel too well - but ran well anyways (aren’t those the runners we hate??) - Joking aside he finished with the day’s fastest split meaning he’s running fab right now. Amex Lee going topless and scaring the girls. Michelle looking like she's blown away her breathing problems, Peter with his new GPS-gizmo that marks out and maps each step and turn. Welcome Cece, “Sore quads from yesterday’s hills” yikes, there’s enthusiasm! And Chucky China, again coming alive as the session rolled on. Camille welcome back, and ran as if had never been away. Luiz T from Venez running superb, but not taking chances this week. Randy about soon to depart to be the king of an ultra race in La Suisse. Alec the lobster belly, burnt bright red by his beachfront frolicking. Evelyn HotRod, firing when the distance hovered to the 400 on all cylinders.
Hey, even The Chubby Boss jumped in for a whizzy 800, “I’m getting in shape for the 5th Ave mile, gotta be the top master there, else I’m giving shoes away at the store.” Cara, again the fashion plate, but tonight the speed demon - tearing! Tom hurting from his overstretching? Right! Cristina pipping tom each time at the line with that Spanish Kick. Tom S back again after we thought he’d disappeared, and welcome back James. Heidi flying with a smooth roll, Amelia from England Welcome, and Robin M welcome too! Juan & Carole back from an ice cream break, “We took seven days of it too…” Good for them!
David P who is wondering why he’s left his duelin’ friends behind on the track with his new gear five. Good to see Brian B slogging away, “was that only a 4, I was ready for an 8?” Hm should have kept running then… Queen of the Harriers who alarmingly disappeared in the middle of one interval only to reappear in the middle of the next “ladies room”, Our Social director Kate, hopefully starting a consistent set but battling work commitments, Shawn back again and focused, and glad also to have Anil back on track and kicking at the front. Everyone ran really well, especially given the hot muggy conditions on the track… Our relations with the soccer crew continue to hover around the non-relations side of bad relations, but hey, can’t win them all right?

I have never ran the Utica Boilermaker, but reading this note from Marty S (One of the best race directors on the east coast, hitekracing.com if you need his assistance)
Here it goes:
“ 1)The expo is a nice one. Not overwhelming. Lots of free stuff given away including Root Beer and stuff by the Saranac Brewery. They can’t give away the beer at the expo- but the DO give out 50% off coupons to be used at the brewery on Sat. Just go there with your bib # and buy up to a case of the great Saranac flavors of brews, hard lemonades, or sodas. The free brewery tour with free brew afterwards makes a lovely ‘start up’ point for priming the palate in anticipation of the post race celebratory fluids the next day. Also at the expo is a running shoe sale, glasses, Ironman stuff, and other incidentals.
2) The Goody Bag puts a limp in your walk. At minimum is a 20oz race glass, a pound of pasta, bags of candy, lotions, shampoos, and other fun stuff. OK- you don’t get a shirt, so sue me. But they have a circus-sized tent of stuff for sale. Every imaginable color T-shirt, singlet, dry-release, sweat shirt, hat, shorts, socks, jackets, mugs, cups, jock straps, thongs, posters, commemorative paintings and women named “Desire” with Boilermaker tattoos…
3) There are two restaurants in town that serve FREE pasta starting at 5pm Saturday to anyone with a bib number. Though we didn’t partake this year we have in the past and I can tell you it is quite OK and not some garbage pasta with Ragu from the jar. Hey cheapskate- pay for a drink at least and tip heavily!
4) A lot of busses to the start are provided from the finish- where most of the parking is. Though it is a 15K race the way the course is designed keeps the distance between the start and finish only 3 Nautical miles downrange. As for myself- since the hotel is only 2 miles to the start, I jog to the start and that provides a great warm up.
5) The start is a little narrow for 10,000 runners, and the corrals can be a bit tight. Since my bib# gets me in the first one it’s not so bad. But the people in the back tell me it could be a 1-2 min delay. But it is chip timed so you can get your exact crossing of the start.
6) The course- challenging in spots. Mostly rolly/flat the first 3 miles. Then up the biggest and longest hill through the golf course. Hey- I hate hills, but on the way down the other side I took 1 ½ mins. OFF the uphill (7:24 to a 5:55) so you can recover those lost minutes. One more climb from 6-6.8, then a nice downhill 8th mile, pretty flat 9th, and downhill the last 3/10.
***7) WHAT BRINGS US BACK- THE SPIRIT & SUPPORT OF THE SPECTATORS.
I know most of you have either seen, heard of, or been thru the huge crowds of the NYC marathon or similar. Well documented and always talked about and photographed. Well LIVE the same feeling in Utica. I am telling you nearly every foot of this course is loaded with spirited spectators screaming something supportive or silly simply the entire way. No ‘S’! Except for the golf course area it is amazingly packed sometimes 3-4 deep! Where do these people come from? From what I can tell 90% of them are Uticans. Now I know that sounds like something Ms. Uta Pippig had trouble with in the Boston Marathon back in the 90’s~ but I do believe it is the word for the residents of Utica. They are boistrous, fun, and from what I can tell, fairly inebriated. But what the hell else is there to do up there?
***8) OK, WELL MAYBE THIS IS REALLY WHAT BRINGS US BACK- THE BEST DAMN POST RACE CELEBRATION IN THE HISTORY OF THE SPORT!!!
Let me outline it for you:
+Turkey sandwiches, bananas, Hoods popsicles, oranges, McDonalds parfaits, Friehoffer’s cookies, Pepsi, Mountain Dew, & the Polish Church selling perogies…
+Beer, Saranac Beer, as far as the eye can see. The race ends in front of the brewery. The party is in their lot. They went thru 194 kegs this year from 9-11:30am
So here is the deal. If you are even contemplating this highlight to your life- you have to book your rooms NOW. hey- you can always cancel. There’s a Radisson, Red Roof, Best Western. Motel 6, Super 8, the Hotel Utica (really spiffy- honest) and a few more. But they are getting filled as I type.” Thanks Marty, sounds like a fab race - so book on now.
We read from Kenya, “Kenya's rowing coach Senior Sergeant Juvenalis Gitau has been killed in a car crash, just a day before his team was scheduled to depart for Athens.
Father-of-two Gitau had been coaching single sculler Ibrahim Githaiga, who will be the first Kenyan rower to compete in an Olympics.” Poor guy.More on merlene - Sprint legend Merlene Ottey is ready to compete in her seventh Olympics.

So I had a photo shoot today - I love these things, it was for the NYRR magazine, as the picture they have has short hair (or so I presumed). In fact in the gym the other day someone recognized me from that photo - One of the instructors was reading the magazine and put two & two together, she did a better job than I would have done(!) So I was drying my hair after my run this morning thinking, ‘I should brush it’ then I was thinking, well if I do the photo won’t look like me…. Should I shave? Same thing.. Better to look my usual scruffy self…. But I had some moments to spare so I shaved. When I got down there, 26th ST, to the Studio - 1600 Sq ft rent $2500 with 11-foot ceilings just incase you were wondering, I discovered it did not matter as they wanted to take the photo with my hair ’up’. Well after discovering that the chair I was sitting in vibrated, with variables, I had a nice time looking at all the digital images that pop up when one clicks on a computer at a photographers studio, spinning round, standing up and getting clicked….

Latest on the dope -
US sprinter Calvin Harrison has been suspended for two years after being found guilty of a doping violation.
As a result he becomes ineligible for the Athens Olympics.
Harrison, who also tested positive for a banned stimulant in 1993, will now have all his results from the time of the second positive drug test nullified.
As a result, he is set to lose his relay gold medal from last year's world championships in Paris.
Harrison's twin brother, Alvin, also faces a lifetime ban after being charged by USADA with steroid use, despite never having tested positive.
We read, “NYRR is always looking for volunteers to help at events with tasks such as calling times to participants, marshaling the course or baggage area, clipping ChampionChips, and more. Volunteering is a wonderful way to enjoy the outdoors and give back to the sport of running. We welcome any commitment of time, and in return we promise thanks from the participants as well as a free race souvenir. We hear from my friend Martin A over in Blighty, and soon expecting a nipper with Natalie his Belgian girlfriend, “In respect to one of your comments on the Crystal Palace meeting last Friday night, I watched it on TV. The women's 400m race was coming on and they showed the start list which consisted of all British athletes. After the race had been ran they put the results on the screen and the commentator said "Nice to see British athletes filling the first 3 places"!!! Is this the same as saying that it's nice to see an American baseball team win the World Series?” Yep, every country has bicycle pumps.
And from the neighborhood of Costanza, “Apollo, the 450-pound white Bengal tiger who escaped the circus to take a mile-long romp in Queens Saturday, saw his act canceled yesterday as officials tried to figure out how the heck he got loose.”
I updated my AOL the other day, ’Your upload is complete’ it nicely tells you.. Then why is it every single time ( a few days now) I try to sign off now it asks for my patience as I have to wait for exciting features (All unwanted) to added? I mean what was I waiting for in the first place?

Down at the store yesterday. There is a new guy working there, from Melbourne Australia. Paul, as he is called, asked me (from up a ladder), "Were you in an Australian documentary about Kenya Eight or so years ago?" To which I answered yes - what a memory the guy has, "I remembered a guy like you, skinny with long hair!"
Well Boon was harping lyrical about the new nike shoes, the ones that make you feel as though you are running barefoot - they have them in blue and funky green… meanwhile Costanza was selling a body skin suit to a woman who was asking about cold weather wear… Chubby was out ("All dressed up, well in jeans" Said Costanza) picking up something for the wedding. Then Costanza tells me that my running career is over "You‘re burnt out" and my coaching career is over, "You’ve been bumped by Patrick C" and to think Costanza was my mentor for so, so many years.. At that point another Patrick, Walsh, came in to pick up some Harrier work out clothes, but they were not quite ready, or at least that is what Boon said whilst stuffing a powder blue backpack…
And later that night, we saw Monsieur Mileage on the bridle path doing what could only be described as synchronized stepping with a peg-legged muppet - calisthenics? Could be, whatever it is it looked odd - but if he pops a good one at the Club Teams….. Speaking of which there are rumors Mgee is going to come out of retirement soon - despite making appearances at a few local races, and running rather well Mike is yet to train more than one day a week for the past month… In fact the last time he was seen in Central Park was too long ago for us to remember.

"Webcast to Offer Marathon Training Advice
In an exclusive webcast, competitors and coaches Gordon Bakoulis, Toby Tanser, and Lauren Wallack Antonucci, MS, RD, CDE, CDN, will answer marathon-related questions about building a mileage base, handling long training runs, improving your finish time, fueling and hydration, and more. Olympic Month! Geb’s future -
"(He) will run his last 10,000 meters championship race at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games," Gebrselassie's manager Jos Hermens said.
"After the 2004 Olympics he will focus on the marathon and half-marathon distances."
Hermens added that the 31-year-old Ethiopian -- he finished third in his marathon debut in the 2002 London event -- planned to run the Amsterdam marathon on October 17.Meanwhile we read that ‘Tergat has put in hundreds of kilometres in training for the last four months since skipping the London Marathon last April, more than the effort he put in last year before breaking the world record, he‘s training in the Ngong Hills area together with Joshua Chelang'a, George ’Titus’ Munji, Ben Mbithi, Festus Kioko and John Ndung'u, logging in 60km daily in training.
And more meanwhiles…
"My allergy problems are solved and things are going unexpectedly well in training", said 1500m world champion and world record holder Hicham El Guerrouj for his Olympic build-up.
I was reading The Essential Guide to Running the New York City Marathon the other day, I could not put it down! So many interesting little tidbits and pieces of advice. I know this sounds like unabashed self-promo but seriously where else can you get a book (endorsed by Grete Waitz, and called ‘The Bible of the NYC Marathon by Runner‘s World‘) that offers elite tips aplenty, a bagel/food guide, training plans, course break downs and more…. Check it out!

An unnamed Jamaican athlete tests positive for a banned substance ahead of the Olympics. Wow, not an American we gasp? Well it appears that the athlete in question has a name, and is indeed coached by a prominent US Sprint coach. Furthermore US sprinter Mickey Grimes faces a two-year ban after testing positive for an anabolic steroid.
International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) spokesman Nick Davies said today that both urine samples from Grimes, who is a member of the HSI group coached by John Smith, confirmed the presence of a steroid.
"We can confirm that the B test was positive," he said. This AFTER Grimes, 27, lost his Pan-American 100 metres gold medal last year after a positive test for the stimulant ephedrine. He should get a lifetime ban.

At the races - A race that is close to my heart, as an honorary member of the Achilles TC I always support this race. Again The Achilles Race was run under rain - 100% humidity and 78% made the going tough indeed. Huge puddles though did not dampen the spirits of all the many, many people who turned out to support this worthy cause. A large group from the war came to run their first race, a good turnout from TNT, and we saw quite a few Flyers out there too. There was more media coverage than I have ever seen at any nyrr local race - well done to the Achilles for orchestrating that. Kudos to all the helpers who weathered the pounding rain to put on this race. Overall race winners - O'Neill, Shane M28 26:33 DUBLIN & Misganau, Alemtsemary F22 29:51 NEW YORK NY And of course the Chubby Boss was the speediest master to the line - well done to Paul Kavanaugh who won his age group division!Later in the afternoon we had an Achilles Brainstorm meeting at the huge retired navy ship, the Intrepid. Yesterday Evel Knievel‘s son Robbie jumped over the ship in a stunt, we took the easier route of walking on board, picking up a burger, and having a chinwag. On the table was Laura, Crista Earl and Ivonne who took the one-two in the visually impaired division at the race… I had got lost with them earlier trying to find the meeting place, “It’s at the end of the boat…” Let me tell you this ship is no tugboat.. And then we were using our sense of smell to try and find the meeting place, ass there was a BBQ… too bad it was indoor… All in a NY afternoon.

The end of July, and we wish TGV the best of luck as he flies out West to start anew in San Diego. A city that is one of the best in America for running, racing, and the outdoor lifestyle.
We also want to remember that back in 1588 - The Spanish Armada was defeated by an English naval force under the command of Lord Charles Howard and Sir Francis Drake.Enough of Drake, and we hear that Paula‘s preps for Athens are going well, “I'm a stronger person now and have more confidence - and that is the big factor the marathon has brought me."
"I always believed I could run a good marathon but just to be able to think at times that I am the best in the world is great. "I always believed I could run a good marathon but just to be able to think at times that I am the best in the world is great.
"That, without being big-headed about it, gives me confidence and I hope to translate that to the track."
"It is tough and there are some days when I would like to go shopping or meet a friend for coffee, but I don't do that when I'm in a hard stage of preparation," Radcliffe said. Uh-oh, no starbucks time? I suppose when you are putting in 160 miles every week, and having 3 ½-hr massages time does fly.
Here are some snaps from the talk last night - we have Zoomalong the expert, Myself the muddler, Lauren the nutritional wizz, and Heidi the guest speaker from Gatorade. Charles Kamathi was in high spirits yesterday after Athletics Kenya chairman Isaiah Kiplagat told him he had been included in the 10,000 metres Olympics team at last.
Charles Kamathi
Date of Birth: May 18 1978
Home: Mathari, Nyeri
Employer: Kenya Police (Corporal)
Weight: 51kg
Height: 1.65m Work out that body mass!! 18.7!
Urban sends us this brain link on running, Click. Thanks Urban.
And today’s Hero is Richard Hulnick of the Flyers, who successfully completed the Ironman this past weekend!! Super impressed, as I would be drowned at the first hurdle like a dead frog with its hind legs bitten off by a hungry goat.
So anyway, talking about hungry goats, I went to see my good friend Mgee last night… he is talking competitions, “I went to do a mile race, Old School versus new, I ran a 4:34 and got second place (against Ivy School athletes), and then in the afternoon I ran a 5k in 15:03... So when shall we start training?” Urm, time for me to do some secret training and take the google search to diet.com. It was very nice to see Mgee, eat some pizza, drink some red wine, and reminisce about the old days… one of my truest oldest friends in the city no less. Beth came home later, great to see her too - looking fabulous as is their stunningly pretty toddler Katie. Mgee’s predictions for the Club Champs, “Will Westchester bring in the team? If they do they’ll win.” that’s my money too. Remember that NYC‘s premier club race is a scant three weeks away. THX also to Mgee and Beth for their continual support of Shoe4Africa.
Some sad news about the hassles on Tuesday night for a Flyer athlete in the park - when running at 7 pm on the northern hills a runner was grabbed by a man. Central Park is a safe place, in general, yet incidents frequently happen. Three weeks ago in the populated area of E72nd a woman was grabbed by a guy at 11-am when hundreds of people were around - we urge you all NOT to wear headphones, and to carry a personal mini-alarm. This athlete was merely running a workout, and not wearing headphones, yet she was harassed - please also watch out for your fellow runners. A sad fact was that the emergency phone in the park was not working!

Back from Rhode Island, we were 8-miles away from Newport in a place called Portsmouth. The food there was awesome! A huge buffet cafeteria - I ate everything, twice. The camp is run by Drew & Wendy, and partnered by Peter Rono, the former Olympic Champion. The running out there is amazing, and next year we’ll be taking a group up - details in 2005... Not as far away as you think! So nice to run on soft grass again.
Predictions for Falmouth RR - John Korir & Susan Chepkemei. Place yer bets now. I say it is a lock, so I‘m giving even money on these guys.
Marion Jones will not take part in the Norwich Union London Grand Prix this Friday.
Stockholm’s 5000 - The final selector race for the men’s third spot in the 10,000 Kenyan team:
Songok Boniface Kiprotich KEN 13:01.47 2 Abdullah Ahmed KEN 13:02.03 3 Jawher Mushir Salim BRN 13:03.46 & in #14 Kemboi Nicholas KEN 13:19.65 - surely now Kamathi must be given the final slot for the 10,000m. Jackson Kipn’gok tells us that it is due to the fact that the two selection coaches come from rival tribes - Dan, who is a Kikuyu wants Kamathi on the team, and Mike K. wants Kemboi who is a Kalenjin.
The women’s 3k was pretty snappy there too - Masai Edith KEN 8:40.02 2 Timbilili Alice KEN 8:43.15 3 Chenonge Ines KEN 8:43.79
“Paula Radcliffe Gets 3.5 Hours Of Massage Per Day” - wow that in itself is like a partime job, give an hour for her showering time per day (two runs), add in some stretching, and clothes changing.. And bobs your uncle the day is done.
Great fun at the NYRR lecture last night - although talking I do always learn a lot of stuff too. Hopefully Vuitton too ass we spotted him in the ‘pack’. And a timely reminder that it is only 14-weeks away from NYC’s big day.

Marion Jones and her lawyer says her ex-husband CJ Hunter is lying when he says she took drugs at the 2000 Olympics. Former world 10,000m champion, Charles Kamathi has demanded a slot in the Athens Olympic Games squad as the national team arrived from the African Championships in Brazzaville, Congo. Damn right too!
Kamathi said he is convinced that he has accomplished the conditions set by Athletics Kenya (AK) before he is included in the team.
"I was told I will be included in the team if I do well in the African Championships and I did exactly that," he added.
He said AK should make their decision now so that "if I am not in the team I can concentrate on other things," he added.
He said if AK won’t allow him in the team, he plans to travel to Italy to prepare for Grand Prix races.
"I actually want to know my fate immediately so that I can do other things for myself," said Kamathi.
He said there was no need for him to wait for Nicholas Kemboi to run in Stockholm Grand Prix as this will be a waste of time on his part.
He said by pulling out of the African event, Kemboi left him as the sole campaigner for an Olympic place and the only thing he needed to do was to justify the position. This, Kamathi said, he did well.
He said the race would have been even more faster were it not for the tactical approach.
"You know I was racing against Ethiopians and they really tried to engage me in a cat and mouse game," he added. Quite right too!
Nike choose a role model for the Run Hit Wonder and invite the fattest guy from the Sopranos? What an example of Health & wellness, in design? So I was boasting how, the other day, when down in Spring Lake where there is no Starbucks, we made a detour to the Red Bank branch (George Sheehan’s old town), just to get a good cup of coffee. Well of course Starbucks himself tops me, currently in Davos at the training center with the Simba who is in real zippy shape for the Olympics we hear,

Rich Nichols, Marion Jones's longtime lawyer, said yesterday. "Track and field athletes have no voice.” Quote of the flippin week, because believe it or not I am getting fed up of listening to Tim Montgomery‘s voice, and am wishing that he did not have one! Ms Jones holds a press conference, yes she has a voice, and perhaps what is really meant is that they do not have a stance. We have already seen the antics fail to try and get a public to side with you, and Montgomery‘s whole case was blow because of his voice! Joking aside a Union may be a good move (that is the topic in question, an Athletes Union.)

Disgraced and dirty cycling time trial world champion David Millar, who was fired this week by the Cofidis team after admitting taking the banned drug EPO, could be given a chance to ride for the Italian Amore & Vita team.
"I'm willing to help Millar -- and the Amore e Vita-Beretta team is ready to take him on -- just as I did with Spanish rider Jesus Manzano earlier this year when he confessed to a Spanish newspaper," said team manager Ivano Fanini.
"By confessing how he cheated he's shown that he's a real man," said Fanini. What?? Pathetique! Talk about I want a cheap bargain and I have no morals for my team. A real man for admitting? Was he a real man for taking the stuff?

“World 3000m steeplechase silver medallist, Ezekiel Kemboi yesterday said the absence of Kenyan-born Qatari Seif Saeed Shaheen, formerly Stephen Cherono, in the Olympic Games was “a blessing“.
He said the absence of Cherono leaves the field open for Kenyan runners. Spoken like a true silver medallist man!!
"There is no doubt that we are going to carry the day. The only thing we do not know is who will take which medal," he said. He said all the three Kenyan representatives were in good shape and only a miracle will stop them from a 1-2-3 finish.
And in a typical Kenyan fashion - “The newly-crowned Africa 10,000m champion, Charles Kamathi's chances of joining the Athen bound Olympic team was yesterday met with mixed feelings.
The former world 10,000m champion was promised by AK that he would be included in the Olympics team if he proves himself in the African Championships, which ended in Brazzaville, Congo yesterday.
“He is fighting for a slot in the 10,000m team with the second fastest runner last year, Nicholas Kemboi. Kemboi also has a condition to prove himself in one of the Grand Prix meetings before he is considered for the slot.
“On Saturday, the two coaches handing the Olympic team -- Mike Kosgei and Dan Muchoki -- seemed to contradict each other about Kamathi's chances.
While Muchoki felt that Kamathi had met the qualifications to represent Kenya in Athens, Kosgei said the decision (to include Kamathi) be put on hold first. Kosgei said Kemboi needs to be given time to prove himself before a verdict is passed. He said it would be unfair for a verdict to be passed now before Kemboi shows what he can do.
"Kemboi will be running in 5000m in Stockholm Grand Prix meeting on July 27. It is only fair that we wait before we can move," he said. Kemboi has been given a condition to post 13.05 minutes in 5000m to prove that he is ready for Athens.
We could pose the question - which Kenyan Athlete has not faced this situation - run for us in the obscure games, and we’ll give you a ticket to the big games…. Now surely Kamathi must be forced to run a 5000m too as it is a near no-brainer Kemboi can dip under 13:05 in Stockholm(!) Kamathi can empathize with Tegla, Joyce, Catherine, and all the other teams members of past & present.
Moving on we love this quote from the horses mouth on something entirely different in Kenyan Athletics - “He said Qatar was represented by Kenyan defectors in both the 800m and the 3000m steeplechase. He said the winner in the 800m, Saeed Moussa is a former Kenyan citizen by the name Elijah Kosgei from Nandi.
He said the runner, despite having finished school in Chemuswa Secondary in Nandi in 1999, still purports to be 17 years. Age stands still, in Kenya.
Kool post work out report from Haidee - “All is well post 800's and boot camp tonight. I ran my first 15 last weekend and also an easy 7 incorporating the Harlem Hill workout of 1.4 x 2. It was tough but I was thinking on the incline that it wasn't as bad as some of the runs I've done alone in January and February. Maybe I'm actually acclimistising myself to the heat. At work in the kitchen, the ovens are cranked to 550 F and all the burners are up. After service, I hide beneath the case of artichokes in the walk- in (fridge is a cool 37 degrees).

Meanwhile in Blighty every one is second guessing now - “
UK Athletics have decided not to ban an unnamed female athlete who tested positive for an anabolic steroid after accepting her explanation for the finding.
The athlete is understood to have claimed that there was a medical reason for the finding of 19-norandrosterone, a metabolite of nandrolone, and that was accepted by both UK Athletics and the IAAF. UK Sport, Britain's anti-doping body, have investigated the decision and are happy that the correct action has been taken.
The athlete tested positive for the steroid between April and the end of last month.
A UK Athletics spokeswoman said 19-norandrosterone could occur naturally under certain circumstances.” Hot runners are Kelly Holmes or Denise Lewis, and the stupid cover-up casts suspicion on anyone doing well… could be a Nobody!
‘Cut and Run’ will give details. Thanks to Jeff for the link.

Happy Birthday to Catherine Ndereba, and (103 today), Al Gordon. Central Park itself is 151 today.
I watched the Last Comic Standing last night, after hearing it was good from some overheard converse at some point… The comics had to devise a new TV comedy sitcom, and to be honest I thought their ideas were awful. On the spot I came up with, “Beyond Reality” the show that takes ordinary people and turns them into something exciting. I mean it is the logical step, we are getting 100 new reality shows each week, and most of the people are as plain as planks, why not ‘give’ them a Beyond-career. This week John the Plumber is going to become a Cat Burglar, he is fed up with his job so he is going to give the art of breaking in a go, let’s join John as he scales the walls of this Fifth Avenue Mansion! Now that would be a story.

and David P sends us this snippet from the Times,
“Dear Diary:
Late on the afternoon of the Fourth of July,
I set out for my usual jog from East 48th Street toward the
Manhattan Bridge. As I reached the end of my run and
started my return trip along the East River, I noticed that
the Franklin D. Roosevelt Drive was closed to auto traffic.
It was, however, occupied by the hundreds of New York's
finest who would be providing security for the evening's
fireworks display.
Because the F.D.R. was closed to cars, I thought this might
be a once-in-a-lifetime chance to run on it. At each
possible entry point, I pleaded my case with the officers.
The responses were firm and consistent. No one other than
police officers would be allowed on the F.D.R. until
clearance was given from the higher-ups.
“At my last entry opportunity, I vigorously pleaded my case
with one very stern officer. His response was the same: a
very firm no. Disappointed, I continued my return jog. As I
approached the fireworks reviewing stand, I noticed several
officers sitting in a police car talking to a group of
people. Once again I pleaded my case. I explained that I
was old and might never get another chance to run on the
F.D.R. without risking life, limb and/or probable arrest.
“Soon a chorus of good-natured support for me arose from the
small crowd: "You've got to let him go." "Come on, give the
guy a break.'' The senior officer suddenly relented and
said, "O.K., but you'll be cited if you're not off at 42nd
Street by the U.N.''
“Delighted, I returned to the very stern officer who had
denied my entreaties with my official permission, pointing
back to the car of officers, who waved their approval. The
small crowd near the reviewing stand, watching my F.D.R.
entry, was now waving and cheering me on. In typical New
York fashion, with a voice dripping in sarcasm, but with a
big smile on his face, the previously stern officer waved
me onto the F.D.R. with a simple, "Knock yourself out.''

And the Low Carb diet trend is fading out - sales are dropping, King Carb & common sense is back on top.
Runner’s World has the full scoop online but - Here’s my own little statement - I have been lucky enough to know Shawn and Eddy since 1997. They are both honorable people, and decent beings. The typical traits of an athlete who uses methods to cheat in athletics do not match up with The Hellebuycks - period. Eddy would eat any junk food (washed down with beer), barely even had a scant interest in any supplements such as vitamins, and was scared of needles. He has an immense ability to push harder than hard, and to drive his small lightweight frame to great speeds. IF Eddy had ‘done’ drugs he’d be boasting a 2:07 PR in the marathon, not 2:11. Look around at the people running 2:11 and you’ll see some genetic freaks, and a lot of hard workers - Eddy’s gift extended beyond his drive, he was born with an East African body.Recently Eddy has become less and less interested in running, recent talks had him thinking about giving up and coaching. His garden is a huge passion, then golf, and competitive running is a game he has played for so many years his interest was bound to wane. If there is a flaw in the system, and we can not disclose info but they have some pretty amazing back-up evidence(!), then the likelihood of a man getting tested 100-times is going to give a 1% chance of a screw up….
You, like me, will believe more in Eddy if you knew him - AND after the arbitration is over when you hear of his evidence. We send our best and sincere wishes to Shawn & Eddy through this difficult time, and hope the truth will prevail.
Furthermore, a few years back I was with Eddy when he received a parcel from the National Marathon Federation coach. the parcel contained liquids and tablets of vitamins/minerals to be taken for an improved performance at the World Champs. Eddy threw the whole packet away, "I'm not taking anything like that, looks suspicious to me." Hardly the actions of an eager drugs cheat.

Athletics Australia confirmed it had been contacted by customs officers about an alleged attempt to import a banned substance in 1998.

Kenya’s William Yiampoy yesterday shook off strong opposition from South Africa’s Werner Botha to win the 800m as the African Championships closed in Brazzaville, Congo Yesterday.
South African Botha assumed the lead at the bell (52.4) but midway through the back straight, Yiampoy surged to the lead and went on to win the race in 1:45.36.
South Africa’s Hezekiel Sepeng (1:45.55) and Sudan’s Ahmed Ismail (1:45.87) followed.
In the women’s 10,000m Kenya’s Irene Kwambai and Catherine Kirui won silver and bronze respectively.
Ethiopia’s Eyerusalem Kuma outpaced Kenya’s Irene Kwambai with 300m to go to the finish line and won the women’s 10,000m.
Kuma, who had tacked herself just behind Kwambai for most of the race, clocked 31:56.77 while Kwambai was credited with 31:57.54.
Kirui was timed at 32:35.71.
On the subject of that land -
Tulu back in Ethiopia's Olympic team for Athens!!Reversing an earlier announcement, the Ethiopian Athletics Federation yesterday included twice Olympic 10,000m champion Derartu Tulu in Ethiopia’s women’s 10,000m team at the expense of her younger cousin Ejigayehu Dibaba. Ejigayehu will now run in the women’s 5,000m alongside her younger sister Tirunesh and Sentayehu Ijigu.
More from the land of Green, Gold, and red - The Great Ethiopian Run today announced that Toyota will be the new title sponsor for the 4th edition of the race. And we hear from Leola, “I am taking the kickingboxing class.” Youch!
Meb Keflezighi steps aside to allow Dathan Ritzenhein on the 10,000m team. Meb will focus exclusively on the marathon. Perhaps wise, however we doubt that Dathan’s 31-minute performance in the trials will be upgraded to anything Sub 29 in Athens - Hope to proven wrong.
Regina Jacobs Accepts 4-Year Ban For THG from USADA. I remember dragging Hakan (A blind runner from ATC whom I was guiding) past Jacobs in a 5k road race telling him, ‘we‘ve just passed a legend.’ Hakan at the time did not seem bothered, did he have foresight?
And lastly belated birthday wishes (yesterday) to Mary W of the NYRR, glad to see that Mary is back on the racing circuit placing in the AG at the Dash & Splash.

Torri Edwards is not a typical drug user, it now appears that she has done something many, many runners have done - buy a simple glucose tablet in a foreign country that had an illegal substance added, like the many cases of Ephedrine-products "I didn't take the glucose to help myself run faster. I took the glucose to make me feel better," said Edwards. The sprinter said she was given over-the-counter glucose tablets bought by her therapist and chiropractor, Dr Christopher Vincent, at a local sundry store in the tourist gift shop near her hotel. "I've worked so hard to get to this point and I don't know what I would do if I had to sit out the Olympics." I hope this matter is not taken out of context, and she is unfairly banned. The hurdler Larry Wade, a training partner of Torri Edwards, tested positive for a prohibited substance earlier this season and could be barred from the Athens Olympics next month, a person with knowledge of the test result said Thursday.
But Torri’s tablet came from a race in Martinique French territory, and surprise surprise yes they do add the stimulant to simple coramine glucose tablets.
In the mailbag, Jeff W’s take, “Toby, Hmmm. Pharmaceuticals in glucose, that's interesting. Not the same as andro in your aminos, same company, same vats, etc. nikethamide (ni·keth·a·mide) (n[ibreve]-keth¢[schwa]-m[imacr]d) a central and respiratory stimulant used to counteract respiratory and central nervous system depression and circulatory failure, administered intramuscularly and intravenously. Administered intramuscularly and intravenously almost certainly because digestive metabolism would render the drug useless. Love the name, by the way. Needs more info on the test. But this is really getting crazy. Like the epidemic of narcolepsy among elite athletes. Tomorrow is another day, time for another scandal.”
And, “ Well, further research says it's possible. There is a product mixing glucose and nikethamide. However, the same excuse was used by french fencer Laura Flessel, who claimed in AUG 2002, she erred and took coramine glucose. Tori Edwards claims she took the drug on 4/24/2004. A perfect prefabricated story. It could even be true. The fencer also claimed she was the victim of a blunder by her medical staff.” thanks Jeff.

The shocker - National 2004 Champion Tulu out! Derartu Tulu the reigning women’s Olympic champion at 10,000m, who also won the title in 1992, is the major omission from the women’s track squad.
News from the Slovac Champs - “Ottey!!
The cold didn't keep ageless Merlene Ottey from competing in the first round of the 100 on Friday, in which the now 44-year-old sprint legend dashed to a 11.13 virtually solo effort, albeit pushed by a hefty +5.3 wind.

And Mrs. Sippy’s word on tips -
Rubs made of dry spices and herbs are a quick, easy way to add
robust flavor to foods you are going to grill – without adding
fat and calories. Where as marinating foods often requires hours,
rubs will add flavor even if applied shortly before grilling.
Additionally, marinades (especially store-bought) often contain
oils and sugars that add fat and calories to a dish.
Regina Jacobs announced her retirement from athletics, four days before a doping hearing.
The 1500m indoor world record holder was due to compete in the US Olympic trials on Sunday - the same day as a hearing into her positive test for THG. “It has been an honor to represent my country as an Olympian and world champion."
And more retirements - The NYRR Run to Liberty 10k.
Anyway I was at the Gym and lying on the mats listening, as I am prone to doing, to one of the trainers talking. He brought up one of my age old queries - “You see by exercising hard you’ll lower your heart beat rate, the heart will then beat slower and you’ll live longer.” really? Well what about all the elevated heart beats when exercising?? Don’t they kind’ve average out the slow beats? If I run a tempo run for an hour at 180 BPM that is a helluva lot of extra bumps than if I’d just laid on the sofa for an hour right?
Hope and Possibility 5 Mile Run/Walk: www.achillestrackclub.org

We hear from our Runner of the year (so far), George - slighty injured right now… hopefully he’ll be back in action soon.
Sad to hear, “Kenya's 1979 African 800 metres champion James Maina Boi, 50, died on Thursday (15 July) after a long illness.
Boi won the All-Africa Games 800m titles in 1978 in Algiers, and added the continental championship crown in Dakar the following year.
He also took the silver medal in the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane.
He came back from semi-retirement to win a silver medal at the 1987 Kenyan veterans' championships.
American record holder Deena Kastor won her fourth U.S. title and second Olympic Trials crown in the 10,000 meters Friday in yet another solo, record-setting performance at the 2004 Olympic Trials.

At the races, well back up Saturday’s dash & Splash was preceded by TGV’s Leaving Party - At Bliss Bar. So we scooped up Anders & Annica after they’d been on an eight hour flight, and headed over - slight probs as non of us had ID (I mean…!)… but we finally got in and had a great night with the Heinekens. The food did not show up at the party(!) So, It was Goat Curry at 1 AM in the morning, so we were looking and feeling our best on the starting line the next day (probably smelling too). Running on 9 ½ Heinekens was ample hydration and we had a nice view of seeing Arsenio Ortez is back to his winning ways. Well we could only see for the first stretch. Anders did slightly better considering the flight, jet-lag, and no sleep. Still that was not a Mr. Szalkai at anywhere near his best.
The Ethiopians from Westchester were in full force, Annica was fourth “Now I am just a hobby runner“, CJ (cara macara) was up there too, and Jerry Jordan led the Masters gallop (formerly known as Macari). The heat slowed times considerably, or at least that is what Pierre The Massage Man would have us believe “I’ll be fast by October…” yeah, me too! PeterDude had a flyer and came steaming over the line, Ursula scorched too, Karen PR’d again “Must be the hangover I woke up with this morning” and Shawn we saw eating the Skinny Cows. Adam Mr Kick from Urban, and Leo warming up for his Nike run on Thursday… AmexLee in his signature yellow, Plenty of NY Flyers, including Tom & Monica (who was hogging the beach towel. Collecting awards and refusing commissions), Rich sunbathing in the beaut. Weather…. We saw Bernie the Chairman out there, Mary W too… Following that it was to Bagel Express on Second Ave (And can we recommend the Sun dried tomato spread), and then after a quick shower off to watch the Softball Game - Tgv doing sprints faster than a Balco rocket, and hitting one into the near stands, whilst we watched from afar (by the food tent of course)… It was the Salomon Smith & Barney Allstars match… then it was over to Hoboken to catch up on the Captain’s BBQ for the evening - the best burgers West of NYC, and even better than my own…. A stuffed ride home had a surprise stopp off at AP to buy a couple of gallons of Turkey Hill - a bewilderment that running was possible the next day!

Have you seen the Petsmart Ad’s, “Shop online, then you don’t have to go out…” great for the dogs huh?
Nearly as good as the walmart Ad - Mother telling the daughter, College days are the best days of your life, daughter says, “I hope so!” Well there’s someone who should obviously top themselves the day they graduate!
Well yesterday was the Feast day of St Swithin, St Athanasius of Naples, St Bonaventure, St Donald, St Edith of Polesworth, St Barhadbesaba, St David of Munktorp, St Vladimir of Kiev, and St Pompilio Pirrotti. So we decided that it could be the Feast of St Urban, so we popped down to the store singing The 'Marseillaise', that was also on the day of feasts adopted as the French National Anthem some 209-years ago… anyway it was the last nike Thursday night run, oophs got distracted - here’s something to do with Pets - It is Cristina and Jose’s new pup - “I attached some pictures of Argi ('light' in Basque), our Tibetan Terrier”
Anyway I did in fact get down to the nike run, had a great time as usual - Stumpy was leading the tretches, oh-my-god, mind you am I am to speak? Anyway he swore at on wednesday he is going Sub-17 in Prospect Park, hm, is this the same guy that swore he'd beat Chubby? Was given every advantage, over every distance, brobed with meals at Nobu yet failed to deliver in close on to two years??
World 100m champion Torri Edwards may miss the Olympics after testing positive for the banned stimulant nikethamide in April. Can’t believe it… well this way Marion Jones could make the Olympic 100m team(!!), now Gail Devers moves to spot #3, and will she take it or concentrate on the hurdles? Or will Torri just get a warning, as Kelli White originally did? Next up is Marion - surely on line now for a relay berth at the worst. Edwards was awarded the world 100m gold medal from last year after Kelli White, another US sprinter, was stripped of the title in June.
Reality Bites - Edwards' positive test means that the every athlete on the podium in that World 200m has now failed a dope test.
Olympic legend Michael Johnson will learn on Sunday if he is likely to lose his Sydney relay gold medal as a result of the Jerome Young doping case.
The International Association of Athletics Federations will meet to decide whether to recommend disqualifying the US 4x400m team. We vote NO. The US team would have won that year whoever it used, and it did have a lot of others running in the semi’s & heats… Mind you were they not Calvin & Alvin?? Silver medallists Jamaica would be promoted to gold.
Defending Olympic 100m champion Maurice Greene will compete in Britain for the first time in two years at the Norwich Union London Grand Prix on 30 July.
"It's great to be coming back to Britain again having not been here for two years now," he added. "And even then I did not show the best of my abilities."
Anne, missing the track workout, “Hi again - I was thinking of you all down on the track tonight.... and
honestly wishing I was there, not smugly snickering in my dry house!” Yeah, right!
We hear that Bruce Hyde was/is running for Central Park TC??
Webb-mania,
"Everybody's like, 'Do you think you can medal?' " Webb says. "Maybe. I'm not going to worry about it. I'm in the ballpark. That's what I wanted." Ball parks are good, but running stadiums are better.

Last month Snapper Don (Don Preven, the guy who has probably given half of NYC a photo of them running) was hit whilst running, he was hit badly, and remains in hospital. If you’d like to cheer him up please give him a call and say Hi @ 718-534-3508 He would love to hear from you, he says he is mending well, and is doing plenty of therapy exercises, and misses you all.
Cooking tips from Mrs. Sippy, “Conventional cooking wisdom holds that cooking vegetables can
cause the loss of important vitamins and minerals. While this
holds true in many cases, there are some vegetables whose
nutritional value actually increases when cooked:
- TOMATOES are an excellent source of lycopene, a substance
associated with lowered risk of heart disease and certain
cancers. Because tomatoes’ lycopene is stored primarily within
cell walls, the heating process actually releases more of the
lycopene.
- CARROTS offer a good deal of beta carotene in their raw form.
But when steamed briefly, carrots provide almost double the
amount of beta carotene that can be absorbed by the body.
It remains true that boiling most vegetables can cause nutrients
to leach into the water. To minimize nutrient loss, steam or
stir-fry veggies, or cook them in only a small amount of water
(rather than a large pot of water).
1867 - Alfred Nobel demonstrated dynamite for the first time at a quarry in England. And elsewhere over there Denise Lewis admits she may not be fit in time to defend her Olympic heptathlon title. A blowout!
15:21:53 - Meselech Melkamu on Tuesday became the third Ethiopian to win the World Junior Championships 5000 event.
Melkamu, this year's World Junior Cross Country champion, is looking like a name for the future.
Ditto from us, “The Central Park Track Club would like to encourage it's members to make donations to B.A.D.D. (Bikers Against Drunken Drivers) in memory of Jason Stern who was killed by a drunk driver while riding his motorcycle on May 7th, 2004. Jason Stern was the 36-year-old son of Doug Stern, whose swimming and deep water running classes have served many of our members over the years. Doug has always been a great supporter of the New York running community and those of you who have run the New York City Marathon will probably remember his encouragement as you re-enter the park just after Columbus Circle.
The Chicago Athlete of the Month(last month) dies out running -
As National Park Service officials released more details about the dangerous Grand Canyon run attempted by a University of Chicago medical student who was a lauded marathoner, an autopsy showed she died from dehydration.
Margaret L. Bradley, 24, a native of the Boston area, died from "dehydration due to environmental heat exposure," according to a Coconino County, Ariz., medical examiner's autopsy report. The death was determined to be accidental. "It could have been 120 or higher" in the sun, when she was out there, way too hot for sport.
Spartan times in Camp Kenya - “There are only four women athletes in camp. Sally Barsosio, who is yet to be officially confirmed in the 10,000 metres team, says the number is too small.
Out of eight women who qualified for the Olympics, five will not train at the camp.
In a bid to raise their level of competition, they must all pretend to belong to different countries to create rivalry and attain the form that will match the opposition in Athens.
The women in camp are Barsosio, Alice Timbilil, Isabella Ochichi and three-time world cross country champion, Edith Masai.
World marathon champion Catherine Ndereba, Margaret Okayo, Alice Chelangat, Grace Gakunyi and Jane Wanjiku have traveled abroad for training and will not join their colleagues in Nairobi soon.
Barsosio and Timbilil started their new training format yesterday.”We then read, “ In Athens, Timbilil and Barsosio rate Ajegayehu Dibaba of Ethiopia, the second fastest in the world at 10,000m, as the biggest threat.
Usual campaigners including Werknesh Kidani and Derartu Tulu are over the hill.” Urm, would that be Ms Tulu who has recently just won the Ethiopian National Championships at 10,000m they are referring to???
Steeple in Athens -
Shaheen, the world champion, world record holder, Brahim Boulami from Morocco and the Olympic champion, Reuben Kosgei will all not be Athens. Same titlists were absent in 1992. When Kenya went on to have a clean sweep.
Athens Olympic organizers called on Greeks Tuesday to snap up unsold tickets to avoid greeting the world with empty stadiums when the world's biggest sporting event comes home in a month's time. With foreigners staying away and millions of seats unsold, Athens chief Games organizers Gianna Angelopoulos appealed to locals to pick up the slack and put on a good show in front of the world's cameras. By the end of June officials said only 1.95 million of a total of 5.3 million seats had been sold.
Big $$ - Olympique Marseille have left the door open for Chelsea to buy striker Didier Drogba despite rejecting a bid of 28 million euros from the London club. "Chelsea made their offer yesterday (Tuesday) and we declined it not because we are greedy but because it's a very complex case," Marseille chairman Christophe Bouchet told sports daily L'Equipe on Wednesday. With my budget, I could afford, urm.. A shoelace?
Haile Gebrselassie's World Junior Championships 10,000 metres record was narrowly beaten with an eyeballs out run from Boniface Kiprop in Grosetto tonight.
The Ugandan bettered the Ethiopian's 12-year-old mark by 0.22sec with a time of 28 minutes 03.77 second when beating off the challenge of Fabiano Joseph who clocked a season's best 28min 04.45sec. - Those of you who missed it, there was brief Chat in Runner’s World two weeks ago featuring Fabiano Joseph - did ya read it?
Rain, lightning and thunderstorms hit the track last night. I was shouting out the splits and I could not even hear my own voice - the rain was coming down in buckets, the thunder was as loud as a tin can alley, and lightning lit the sky with a scary regularity. The track was flooded out till lane #5! Huge Kudos to the athletes who made it out there!! We had Adam the human Torpedo, Alec who had just been to a hairdresser “I got soaked going there, so they put all my clothes in the dryer for me!” Jose “Cristina picked a nice night to stay and look after our new puppy, A Tibetan one - he’s lazy, not her!” Conor - Thank god for Conor and his big green umbrella, ran damn good too. Kurt LE Vert who entertained all with his body surfing through a gigantic pool of water at least twice!Chucky China who now can speak Chinese phrases much better than I can. Kevin who ran like a trooper through the rain and ankle deep puddles like a warrior. Emily “Adam made me come down” earning her stripes. Heidi flying well. David P recovering from The Bronx. Juan stepping up tonight, and Carole of the Vineyards hanging in with smiles “I never realized we started at 7:10 each week, I thought we were sloppy 7 pm starters” ah, no! Larry “Getting vision problems in this storm, can hardly see a thing” well it worked as he was running faster than usual! HotRod zipping through the 400’s as we’d expect! AmexLee who looks well and has defo chiseled down. Ross, our Ringer, and Charlotte who as the rain came down harder, dug deeper. Gary in the puddles, and Century hopping in and putting in the miles… all of which on the wave of the storm…..

Shame on Canada - No females in the marathon squad? Why? National titles have been won, qual times have been met… but wait, let’s see ‘18 Team staff for 26 athletes.’ Can it be from a Western Country?? It is all about the buck, and Canadian officials ‘appear’ to be delegating the expenses to their extensive list of “I want to go please” officials, instead of the athletes who deserve to be there. Last month we wrote a letter to the Canadian Olympic Committee asking why a certain Canadian woman had been left off the marathoning team, they never bothered to reply.Okay, okay - if you send a small team due to a budget problem that is one thing, but really when you send so many officials and so few athletes it is a smack in the face for the future Canadian youth wishing to become Olympians.
They have a Head Coach, six team coaches, and an apprentice coach all traveling!! How much flippin‘ coaching do you need once you are there at the Olympics?? The answer to that is obviously more than the athletes who are there to perform!

We read,
“Apparently there is a brand of expensive coffee from Indonesia called Luwak, which is harvested from half-digested coffee beans picked from the turds of a small weasel-like animal. Is this really true?” Read on here!
Umbrellas? Yep, I used to hate the things.. And life has just got worse since the invention of Cellphones! Now people walk about the UES stuck under their little hoods, connected like a satellite, walking into everything! Could hardly make it to the park for these obstacles the other day!

We hear from Starbucks who is training the Simba,
“It´s freezing cold in Davos, we had snow this week ! Things are going well but we hope it will be warmer soon.” Well good job they are not back in Holland, as Wilma Van Onna tells us, “Lots of rain, wind and cloudy weather and it is supposed to be Summer!!!” Remember to visit her store if over in Rotterdam!
From Jeff W, “I don't know if you ever saw this Charlie Francis interview that I mentioned in my e-mail, so here's the link. Click Here.

“Finally, Some Guys Worth Rooting For” We read on the Runner’s World online about the men’s 1, 2, & 3 in the Olympic trials… well guess what
American sprinter Justin Gatlin (the number two) was reinstated by the governing body ofworld athletics a while back after serving one year of a two-year doping ban. ... Yeah, I will be of course rooting for that guy!Furthermore two of the above three are coached by Trevor Graham, “Graham, who has had six athletes hit with positive drug tests and who published reports have placed up to his eyeballs in the BALCO scandal…”
Congrats to Anne K of UATH who went Sub 17 at the Vytra 5k this past weekend, 16:55.

UTICA -- John Korir won the Utica Boilermaker Road Race.
Susan Chepkemei took the women’s crown.
Korir won the 27th version of America's largest 15-kilometer road race for the second straight time and fourth time in six years and Chepkemei claimed her second consecutive title on Sunday. Second was Pieter ‘Starbucks’ Langerhorst’s athlete Wilson Kigen-Kipkemboi. The “Russian’ Ladies swpt the masters, with the double Olympic marathon dmedalist making her mark with the silver lining - “Firaya Sultanova-Zhdanov 52:18 to win the women's masters title and $1,000, and also earned $400 for her eighth-place finish in the open division.
Valentina Egorova was second in 53:19 -- also ninth in the open -- and last year's winner, Elena Paramonova, was third in 54:45“.
The women’s 10,000 is shaping up to be the not2miss event at the Olympics - Ethiopia’s Ejegayehu Dibaba set the second fastest time of the season for the women’s 10,000m when clocking 30:43.39 in the “Meeting Internacional Ciudad de Baracaldo” held yesterday (10 July). Only Britain’s Paula Radcliffe has been able to run faster this year with a 30:17.15 performance in Gateshead (27 June). Dibaba also holds a 14:32.74 PB at 5000 for third in Bergen last 11 June. Werknesh Kidame of TEAM MIZUNO was second.
TGV at the Bronx 1/2 - “I missed it because I was too stupid and didn't remember to put the Mizunos in the minivan. Turned up at the Bronx wearing his Birkenstock sandals! I have a horrible feeling that it will happen to me soon too!
Anyway we were to show you a picture of the new FILA gear for 2005. But we never got round to it.. However in the email this comes from Randy… “Taken from my sneaky PDA camera when you were not looking….”
That was a fun subway ride, though poor Randy had to keep on switching his mountain bike, that was traveling with us, from right to left as the Harlem Gospel Choir alighted the carriage along with Bubba and his flyin circus… as Randy said, “I hope nobody is wearing a white skirt to church today, because I’ve got my oily chain!” The mind boggles that everyone seems to crowd around the most crowded place in the subway, instead of making the bold and venturous step to take two of them.Mind you, don’t get me started on the tourists this down near Ground Zero who walk hexagonally across every side walk with the clairt of a kazoo note.

Michael East will not, as hoped, double at Athens. His hopes of an Olympic double ended when he could finish only fifth in the UK men’s 800m qualifier in 1:49.79. The Commonwealth 1500m champion will still compete in the longer race in Athens but had hoped to be the first Briton since Steve Cram and Peter Elliott in 1988 to enter both.

Former world and current European 400m hurdles champion, Stephane Diagana, has retired from athletics because of a calf injury.
"Following a calf injury suffered on 5 July, I shall not be able to train for the Olympic Games," he said.
"As I had already decided this would be my last season, I have decided to end my career as an athlete." Before we burst into a rendition of Edith Piaf‘s “No regrets…”
From the Kenyan press, talking about one of their athletes, “This year he hopes to exorcise his bad dream of four years ago in Sydney where he was eliminated in the heats in yet another poor outing for Kenyans in this event they have dominated for the last 40 years.” Okay(!) So here is the quiz - what event are they talking about? What event has Kenya dominated for the last 40-years??? You may be shocked to learn it is the 800m - an event they won Olympic Gold in 1992 & 1988... During the past forty years, have never had a world record in either the men’s or the women’s event, and had scant Olympic success outside the above mentioned.
Non Olympic success continued… Lance Armstrong is skipping the Athens Olympics, saying he needs to spend more time with his children.

From Michiel in Amsterdam - “There have not been updates for some time from my side, however I am doing fine but just busy working and do not have a connection to the www at the casa at this moment. At first I felt like a addict not to be able to make email from the big chair but hé there was no email 10 years ago and we did fine then !
“Biggest shocker of course sports wise for this summer in Europe is the European title in soccer the Greece won last Sunday. Great Athens is still celebrating at this very moment! The last big thing the Greeks won had been the Euro title in basketball in 1987. In soccer they have never ever won anything as far as I can remember. Biggest change? A German coach who makes them play with their head not only with their heart. Holland, for some years ago a threat for every soccer nation including Brazil! did not make it past the semi-final. They lost 1-0 against Portugal. This country playing at home could not keep the BIG cup in Lisboa. However, I have seen some great matches live at home and in bars in the center of Amsterdam!
“On the 1st of June I attended the one and only big track meeting in Hengelo, Holland, a town some 100 miles from Amsterdam. This was the Fanny Blankers Koen games upgraded this year from grand prix 2 to 1. And so I saw mister Bekele break the world record in 5000 which was a thrill to experience. After all his wins for over the last couple of years including his wins over Mr. Gebre himself time had come to set his 1st WR. 12.37.35 is just amazing and he won the race with a 24 second lead. Conditions in the 10.000 filled stadium were just ideal no wind, 15 Celsius I guess. I have been fortunate enough to see Bekele run live a couple of times over the last couple of years.
“For people interested in bio-mechanics he is very exciting to study. It has been for a long time in which was said the Kenyans had the perfect statues for distance running, including the long thin legs. Bekele's built is different, he is short in size and his legs look rather firm but they just keep moving back and forth like they are an unwinding toy and there is just no stop to it! He loses no energy making movements a runner shouldn’t make keeping his upper body like in perfect harmony only let the arms move. Gebre himself is still an amazing runner shaking out 26.41.58 in 10.000 on the very same day with is just super-fast, however he can not beat Bekele anymore who just enters a new time-zone and will set a new standard in distance running for the next 10 years.
“Hicham el Guerrouj was announced at the meeting but did not race, guess you read about his problems starting the season. I hope he can grab the title he deserves in Athens and retire afterwards but he will not get it cheap. He is not getting better anymore and he drags 2 losses in Olympic finals in Atlanta and Sydney with him. Of course there was much more but you must have read all results at IAAF of at fbk-games.nl. Until next time which will be faster in delivery!
And in the mailbag from Urban in London, “... supplying you with the latest information in UK athletics again. After reading your article with Maggie Okayo, I thought a copy of the following book might help her to understand the course. Radcliff's Paula, with her no-stone-unturned policy, said in an interview she has studied the course and been there earlier this year. “Got yesterday a copy of the new book "Road to Athens" by Bill Adcocks. As you know Bill is famous for holding the course record of 2:11 over the Athens marathon course. The record sill stands today, and many claim the record will not be broken during the Olympics. Obviously a hell of an achievement during the time. However, you get the impression that he took it a bit too far and sees himself almost among the running gods :) Get a decent field, put up the prize money and the record will be broken, no?
Clicks See, Clicks2 Greetings, Urban.” Thanks!
Saturday was own to Sara & Gary Heard's for the Sorbet fest of Duane St. Nice to see all the Flyers there, and the sorbet was tops of it all! Well then because we were on Duane, we had to go to Reade Street (Duane Reade) and finally hook up with Jen & Randy for coffee. Now RandySax is world famous for his coffee - he'll tell you what speed the water has to pass through the beans, what beans must be used, an everything & all things about the devil's Cup. Apparently the hot bean soon coming is called the grumpy Monkey and is bought from a dealer in New Jersey - delivered by fedex. The coffee did hit the high marks, and was excellento - Randy also has a sound proofed studio room, a steinway piano, a dog doorbell, (dog included), all inclusive in the snappy apartment. Then we hit the Store and spent the afternoon pretending to be a shoe salesman with Fashion-Plate CJ, and Chubby at the store - after about ten minutes of critical advice people would ask, "do you work here?" And look kind've disappointed when they heard the truth. Well the carrot was that Cara (aka Fashion Plate) had brought in a pear, blueberry, and apple pie - super good, and that pie is now history - lasted not even into the evening hours.
The Bronx - this half can be brutal, if the weather is its usual self - it was not. The gods smiled kindly on Northern Manhattan! Urban members were plentiful - including Leo - his first half, Kurt “Suffering” Randy “Some good parts, some interesting bicycle retrieval stories,” and Peter2 “12-lbs heavier than my last run, and feeling it.” Also out there was RLX helping with traffic directions, Fidel who kindly pointed out which runners were going to pass me, and good to see Trevor Murray again. I ran some of the way with Laurent - good to see him again, and with my view from afar it was nice to see Kabiso run away with things. We met Peter Heim. On the start line who predicted, “I’m going to run with the HR monitor today, I think I’ll do 1:15” and that is what he did(!)
Congrats to Claudia Camargo who won the race, to Alan Rube who was the day’s master blaster with his usual dominance, and great to see one of our favs Greater NY’s Michelle Bleakley back again on the racing scene after having a baby! TGV was having knots in the belly, Peter1 was suffering from an impromptu Friday workout on the Bridle Path when he thought he was going for an easy run - NOT the best pre-half work out idea! We saw Chucky China who was taking it easy and smiling as he ran, a whole host of Flyers, and thanks to all the fine NY City Runners who shouted out en route - diamonds!
In the afternoon we went up to the Palisades to check out a star bucks and look at an old fort, buy beer, ice cream, brie, ham, baguettes, the day’s second Apple Fritter, and whatever was later constructed into the nights nutrition - twas a luverly day, as they say.

The leading 1500 male runner of the year…. Rashid of Bahrain, via Maroc.
“Yet while athletically life was improving, Ramzi was having to face up to the uncomfortable reality that he was living on the breadline.” Then came a friend’s phonecall,
“come to Bahrain. Here there are a lot of possibilities for work and if you join the military service, as well as the regular pay you can train in the best conditions provided by the military’s own sports team.”
Ramzi jumped at the chance, and by the end of the year he was in Bahrain earning approximately 750US dollars a month. Also, as is automatic for all foreigners who join the armed forces of Bahrain he was given a Bahraini passport and immediate citizenship.
His stops before Athens - 1500m in Stockholm (27 July), a Mile in London (30 July) and a 1500m in Zurich (6 August). He is now the hot fav for a gold in Athens, and to beat his idol en route, El G.
More Drug-news - The IAAF says it will not suspend athletes from competition unless there is evidence they failed drug tests. And over in Britain, itself hit by the drugs scandal of Chambers. “Olympic 200m silver medallist Darren Campbell has hit back at Colin Jackson's remarks that no male British sprinter will get an Olympic medal.
Jackson hit out at the standards of British sprinting earlier this week.
But Campbell said Jackson's remarks were "unprofessional" and could hit the confidence of younger team members.
"He can criticize me, that's fine, But he should know athletics is about confidence.” Good point. Plus as Jackson himself did not better than Campbell, he’d best just shut up!
Two-time Olympic long jump champion Heike Drechsler confirms she will not compete in Athens. A legend in the passing, from an East German, to a German, to one of the all time bests.
In the mail, from Le Vert, “I saw this with regards to the trials next week and thought you may want to post it Click.
“Also I am gonna go out on a limb and say even if Meb runs the 10K that Kennedy wins it. I also think that Bob will break the US record this year in the 10K at the Olympics... Yeah I know but I have always been a fan of the determination that guy shows on the track.” Thanks Kurt. I‘ll bet against that, on both counts. Meb the winner, and record holder by the summer‘s end.

A change in procedures James, we hear that ‘RACE CHECK-IN HOURS -
Starting with the NYRR Bronx Half-Marathon this coming weekend, check-in and registration hours at NYRR will begin at 1:00 p.m. (rather than noon) on Thursdays and Fridays. Saturday hours will remain 11:30-4:30 for Sunday races. Chubby will be defending his unbeaten Masters 5000m record, he has never, ever lost to another master over this distance on the track… can he keep it up, “All depends on that Saturday night…” he was heard to have said.
From the lawyers, “We hope that Tim (Montgomery) will have the best opportunity to clear his name in a fair and impartial proceeding.”
Begging the question - what is there to clear? He has already, from his own mouth, admitted to taking illegal drugs.
From the Kenyan press we learn about…
“Rarely are athletes from Kenya as flamboyant and visible as (Wilfred) Bungei. If not sporting his trademark designer dark glasses on the track, off it Bungei likes the cowboy attire – original Texas boots, hat and the finest quality Levis jeans.”
And the speculation has ended as
Nicholas Kemboi, who posted the second fastest time in the 10,000m last year, yesterday said he rejected a deal to become a Qatar citizen due to his love for Kenya.
Kemboi, who reported to the Olympic camp yesterday, said he had to make hard last minute decisions due to his patriotism.
Kemboi was one of the two runners to defect to the gulf state last year. The other one is James Kwalia, who is still pursuing the deal.
He said he could not imagine changing his name and religion just because of money.
"As far as I am concerned, money is something but it is not everything," he said.
He said he had built his name for some time and changing it to something else was in bad taste.
Besides, he said he was a strong Christian and did not imagine turning into Islam or any other faith at the moment.
Kemboi said he was approached by a strong delegation from Qatar and promised all the good earthly things.
"I still want to compete for my country now and in future and the decision to change citizenship did not sound as good idea to me," he noted.
He said unlike Kenya, the Qatar government was ready to offer material wealth any time he won medals for them.
He said in Kenya, nobody cares whether you win medals or not.
"All we do after winning medals for this country is to shake hands with the Minister for Sports at the airport on arrival and that is it," he added.
Kemboi, who has been nursing an injury, said he had recovered and would like to concentrate on training for the next one month.
Kemboi said he will train at Kasarani for two weeks before shifting to Switzerland where he will train for the same period.
Kemboi said he will run the 5000m at the Zurich Grand Prix to gauge himself before the Olympic Games.
Over in Sweden the club from Stockholm, Hässelby SK, won both the men’s and women’s team national track champs.

A letter from the NY Flyers running club newsletter - “Last Saturday I was running in Central Park, carrying (as per usual) my drivers license, debit card and a $20 bill rubber banded together in the zippered pocket of my water belt. Apparently, however, a zippered pocket is only secure if one remembers to actually zip it, and, lo and behold, somewhere my ID, card and cash fell out. Now, of course losing these items was upsetting. However, my own carelessness was what really angered me. I went back to the park that afternoon to try and find everything, but it was to no avail; I assumed everything was gone. Then this past Friday I got a letter. “Hi,” the hand-scrawled note read, “Found your ID & credit card in Central Park on E92nd Street on Saturday. Hope this is the right address. Best of luck.” The anonymous note was simply signed “A Jogger in CP”. In the envelope was not only my license and credit card, but the $20 dollar bill.”Very nice to read, and a real shocker. Cycling time-trial world champion David Millar has pulled out of the Olympic team, his representatives say. During police questioning last week Millar admitted taking the banned drug erythropoietin (EPO) in 2001 and 2003. He is already barred from the Tour de France starting on Saturday as his Cofidis team is under investigation in the doping probe.

The week after the Olympics he absolutely demolished the field at Zurich, that included all three medallists. Won the world champs a couple more times, picking up the WR along the way. Finally made the Olympics in 2000, though out of form, and ran one of his worst ever races. And now he is back! “Mike East, Commonwealth champ for 1500m revealed the bizarre antics of American middle distance sensation Alan Webb in the call room before their clash in Hengelo. East mentions he was perplexed to see Webb with headphones on screaming out rock songs and playing air guitar just minutes before the race.
“He had obviously no idea about European track etiquette, says East. There were Eliud Kipchoge and Bernard Lagat and I don't know what they made of it, says East. Webb was listening to Good Charlotte "Lifestyle of the Rich and Famous" And Urban addds, “So I may try this in Chicago to get into the mood, when you see there someone striding up and down the start line like Angus Young (ACDC) then you know it's me :) Plus some interesting story about Ethiopian running mentality. Happy Fourth of July Weekend! Have a ball! We hear Chubby & Stumpy are racing on Saturday in CT, and coincidences we’ll be out there on Sunday - testing the new Fila racing uniforms 2005 - very beautiful, sky blue. Anyway
Fireworks will be at the Store on Saturday when Urban has its Summer knockout sale. If you can’t be there you lose out, simple - no holding products or whatever. Who is there buys. At the last sale that was smaller than this one Kurt Le Vert got three pairs of running shoes for under $50, and Anatoly bought the new nike T, overall, and singlet/shorts in a wrap package of $25! We all know Chubby likes to clear his shelves, and this will be one of the days!!What not to buy -
Refridgerators with TV screens as a selling point? Whatever next.. The same with car advertisers, they seem more concerned with telling you that the model has an in-car DVD screen that what the car has for an engine!
Sympathy goes out to
Abraham Cherono who yesterday alleged foul play in his exclusion from the Olympics Games team.
Cherono, brother to both Christopher Kosgei & Stephen Shaheen said he was not told why he was left out by Athletics Kenya (AK) and yet he had been training very hard to represent the country in the games. Cherono finished third in the 3000 metres steeplechase at the trials but selectors picked latest steeplechase sensation Paul Kipsiele Koech, who finished 11th because he has the season’s best time.We feel it is unfair because Abraham has always been a loyal performer for Kenya, always toed the line, and did not swop countries like his younger brother for dollars. To drop him also from the All-Africa team (Although he later stated he did not wish to runthe race), is a snub beyond words.
Meanwhile running in Rome tonight El G is hoping to elevate himself up the ranks, “Everyone, including myself, knows that I have never won an Olympic title yet I feel extremely confident. It is true that I am currently very “down” in the World performance lists but since the birth of my daughter Hiba I have been feeling very “high”.
Glad to see that Serena beat Mauresmo in the semis at Wimbledon - why? Because half way through the second set Mauresmo disappears off court to get treated for back cramps - Can you imagine?? Hold the marathon, Paul Tergat wants a time out… yes a three minute is allowed, but let’s take seven instead - you other guys hang around.
What a stupid rule - if Mauresmo has no the condition to play, then get out the game. What is insulting is that she returns and for the next five games has the acrobatic moves of a cat!
Wendy announces the start of her camp, THE KENYAN WAY, marathon Academy 2004 - a training camp with Kenyan Olympians in NJ on campus for a week camp - pick up a brochure at the NYRR, or email us for details! Promises to be double the success it was last year!
And Michelle L has got her new poodle, and its name is Lucy….
She was at the Nike run, that Cara ran last night - we ran up the WSH and back, and I got to see Peter2 (Smoulucski, or however you spell that complicated name!) again, which was nice. Chubby was in the Uhaul and missed the run, but we had a good time, and found out that Herb-the-Verb (who brought down his scrap book) has joined UATH now!

Monte-Carlo – The MGK-Vis Golden Gala, the second of this summer’s six TDK Golden League meetings takes place in Rome’s Olympic stadium tomorrow. We can see it, here in the USA, on telly in a delayed weekend showing. Big names are there including the new World Record holder in the W5000! Elvan Abeylegesse. Yuriy Borzakovskiy of Russia, the 2003 World silver medallist, will be in the M800, and Bernard Lagat is in the 1500m - an event that is finally warming up this year.

Allegra Beck, Gianni Versace's favorite niece, turned 18 Wednesday and took possession of the inheritance from her late uncle — 50 percent of the fashion house.
The inheritance had been held in trust since Gianni Versace was gunned down on the front steps of his Miami Beach mansion on July 15, 1997, when she was 11.
While the company has remained under family control, it is laden with debt. Before his death, Gianni had planned to put the company on the stock market, but then everything had been placed on hold until Allegra's 18th birthday.

Anyway back to our own track night! Firstly congrats to Chubby who is now at the Euro weight of 154, and looking extremely zippy, he did some flying 100’s and took off - next time to be seen on Saturday when we have the SUPER SALE at Urban Athletics, everything Cheap, and cheaper. For example some odd bods like a pair of 2004 shox for $30 - just go down and see what there is, no previews just great deals…anyway yes so Chubby was showing off his tan, and slimness, and the soon to be Mrs. Chubby (not in weight) CJ came down as the week’s fashion plate, again… and before I get in to the report let me say the workout was damn hard, damn hard! Peter sporting the new singlets of Farago Racing, did great on the 8’s, Zack, Gary, Heidi of the Harriers doing well - Zack running like a demon and Heidi showing speed is naturelle. Sir Alec with a stitch, well that was his excuse, glad to see Queen of the Harriers, Adam getting ready for a fast 5k but missed Fairfield.
Kevin, we take our hats off to this guy who killed himself in the last mile and came within four seconds of the free shoes. Anne back in her stride and with eye of the tiger again. Welcome back to a fav of mine, Conor the Irish Ironman - coming back to reap up some speed. Kurt Le Vert getting ready for his next steeple, and planning his NYC marathon. AmexLee off traveling and onto the track, as per Jonnie too “that was the hardest session I’ve done,” Jose running back again like he was before and outta the sand of the Sahara.
Tom Shaw charging in the sprints. Charlotte and husband Ross, a ringer in the makings. Charlotte reeled him in as the pain set it lactic lock on his legs. AmexChris a late charge onto the track, and some good miles. Shawn as a spectator, “I plan to have a team party soon.” Yeehar… And Sean Fortune coming down too for part of the workout, with a view to becoming a triathlete we hear. Hotrod, late down, but fast to catch up! Juan & Carole the newly weds, and Juan shot off on a 400 after not hearing that only Carole got the excuse note.
Luiz from Venezuela coming to say hi, nice of him - he has visitors in town and has to do the obligations. David P finding new found sprinting gears beyond the speeds of Balco! Liverpool Lucas who has more gears that he cares to admit, and ran at some stunning speeds last night. David Goldwin, down after a long time. Michelle2 showing that she’ll square off with anyone in the 200’s! Buffalo looking better and better every single week! Every one ran so so well we even cancelled the Boot Camp for once… as it was a in-field of attrition as the final run was finished.
Hey, remember the sale this Saturday 10 till 5 be there!

Anyway, with the current crop of fast finishing Ethiopians in the 10k (remember Tulu’s ability to close with a 60” last lap when running 30:18 in Sydney?) we would say Paula should go for the Marathon, and run it in the fashion Benoit did in 1984. Not as a tactical Olympic event, but to go for the knife.. Straight from the gun. Anyway, any one runnin’ and traveling to Athens, or elsewhere should read this!
